I thought the same! I'm American so I didn't grow up with this so I've been watching Cats Countdown for a few months now. This one just seems eerie, especially how Rachel tries to bring a personality to the show but can't. But I'd probably be less opposed to this if I were used to it.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who appreciates this but I'm a big fan of the various camera shots they do of the clock as it counts down, but particularly the one that starts 22:37 where the camera just slowly zooms in from a studio wide angle. Artistic stuff!
And it's one, continuous, 30 second long take. Eminently superior to 1917 - that film gave the impression of being a continuous take, but actually it was many takes edited to look like just one.
Having the hostess stare into the camera dates back to the early days, when Carol was nowhere near everyone else and couldn't see them, so staring into the camera was her way of 'connecting'. It's more interesting and engaging for the viewers, a lot "sexier", and even these days it's better than Rachel twisting her neck round and looking out of shot to some contestant who isn't even facing her.

I wasn’t a fan of countdown before but with the lockdown it was affecting me so I needed to do something to distract myself from it, so I started watching countdown and it’s helped me during the 3 lockdowns. I’m addicted to countdown now 😂
Prior to this, the only episodes of Countdown I'd ever seen were 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. I'm hoping Fabio is still in this version~ edit: OH MY GOD I GOT NAUTILUS!!! I like this game!
When I play countdown at home I freeze the TV and give myself about 4 minutes to work out a word and then I see can I match them but usually I do not 😠 sometimes however I beat them , when it comes to origin of words etc , I just fast forward through all the talk

Hi there, bit of an odd question. Would you happen to have recorded the Countdown episode from 20/01/2015? One of my work colleagues was on this episode and we're at our wits end trying to find a copy of it. Many thanks.
Maybe, I recorded a run of them at the time, then I cut back on the following years...my method was to save TV & Watch it in freetime, but, we never catch up....I put a few things on You-Tube, as sometimes it is good to share things, as many times, things are not repeated or we miss it....but, as you are probably aware..any new uploads now are often blocked automatically, so you are unlikely to find it as a new upload......I do need to sort out my TV Collection, as nothing is filed properly...so if I do have it, it won't be easy to find it at the moment...until I find time to tidy up...& many things I have uploaded are still being blocked or removed...as You-Tube or the Production Company file a claim on it...so I have more or less left Uploading for the moment, as any new content now seems to get a Strike...& a few Srikes now, leads to the channel being deleted..even thou, in the past I got numerous strikes over the Months...which makes it annoying sharing episodes...as I used to record numerous shows....Keep an eye on the other freeview channels, as they will probably start repeating some of them....If I find it in future, I will let you know, but, I won't be tidyng up for many months...as I am running a backlog on things at moment & never have enough time to catch up...

As an American watching this show for the first time, I prefer the 8 Out of 10 Cats crossover version. Leave aside the fact that I'm a Jimmy Carr fan, this original version has a fairly serious overtone that makes it dry compared to other game shows I've seen.
I've recently been introduced to this show (and the raunchier version) and -- while I can see the appeal -- I just don't understand why they don't just say "four consonants and three vowels, please" at the start of the every word round, since that's a requirement; after looking, they could decide how many of the last two should be vowels and how many consonants. But all this one-at-a-time "consonant, please" "vowel, please" has no meaningful effect, no?
Some letter combinations you might have after the first seven might really need some more consonants or vowels, whatever you picked. Throw an X in there and you might want an extra consonant for example. Picking them one by one makes it a little easier, and, as was said, gives them a little more time.
In fairness, "heroine" - with the "e" - is a female hero. It's "heroin" for the drug. But it's still amusing how he declares it like that, nonetheless.
