    During a Holy Land Tour
Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church, also known as the Hanging Church, is one of the oldest churches in Egypt, dating to the 200s AD. St. Mark brought Christianity to the region and the 'Coptic Christianity' and the 'Pope of Alexandria' (descended from Mark)' was a stronghold here until the Islamic era in the 7th century. Several Coptic Popes used this church as their base.
Long back it was built on stilts and appeared to be 'hanging' above the Roman Tower's gatehouse, that's how it got its name. Because the land has risen since then, it doesn't look 'hanging' anymore! The Fortress of Babylon is from the Roman times, originally built in the 1st Century AD. Original pillars of the Roman fortress can be seen in the floor of the church.
This church has many 'relics' of saints, including: bones of Saint Simon the Tanner; "a part of the Holy Cross"; "a part of the holy Tomb stone”; and "a part of Saint Virgin Mary's girdle". The church is also associated with several miracles, including apparitions of the Virgin Mary inside the church.
