I agree I see absolutely no reason to upgrade other than if battery life is really important to you. I hate the screen on the Pixel 9 the super rounder corners and lower res display just ripping off the iPhones inferior design cuz its the cool thing to do.

Until they add some decent fast charging speeds, I will have to live with the pixel 6 pro. Honestly the updates are so minor for 3 years of progress and the AI features seem like a gimmick at best. I am still looking for a phone with the pixel's software and a Chinese phones hardware (xiaomi, vivo, oppo etc.)

The 6 Pro has aged like fine wine. Its the longest I've kept a phone and every software update makes the phone have less and less issues for me. Right now it runs without a hitch and I dont plan to upgrade until they end security updates. Definitely recommend people to pick up a refurbished one if they want to save money on a phone.

I bought my renewed 6 Pro (black) from Amazon for $226.42 (tax/ship included), and it came practically brand new. I inspected this thing like I had OCD, but couldn't find one single blemish anywhere. The only thing is when you slightly shake it, there is a rattle of a component behind the camera module, but that doesn't do anything to the performance of the camera, nor anywhere else internally in the phone. However, buying an Amazon renewed phone is a gamble. I've seen reviews that were based anywhere from unlocking issues to phones arriving damaged in some way or form... Now for me, I've never had any issues with the phones I have purchased off Amazon, and all have only been renewed (used). Everything has worked great for me, just pop my own SIM card in and I'm good.

Holding onto my 6 pro for now. I love that every little thing has been upgraded, and every "issue" with the 6 pro has been addressed.
Except, I don't have any major issues with my 6 pro (aside from a dying screen). I look forward to upgrading to the 10 pro next year, even if the tmsc chip is way overhyped.

Same for me, I am surprised with all I've heard about the fingerprint reader, that it works so well... I'm not one to be hung up on how fast a fingerprint reader unlocks a phone after you press your finger down, because why is that even a thing for people?? 😂 🤦🏽‍♂️ But anyway, I was surprised... I thought at least with all the bashing the fingerprint reader got, I would at least be thinking "..so This is why people have had such an issue with this fingerprint reader...." , but not even that. It must be a testament to how well they've improved it on this phone... Since I clearly don't know how the experience was when the 6 Pro came out...

I like the new design but I cannot see a good reason to update from my Pixel 6 non-pro to a 9. The AI stuff looks barely useful, Gemini is sectioned up with paywalls with lots of different versions which has no interoperability between them. The cameras are good on the 9 but the 6 is also just fine for me still. My phone's battery is also okay for now. There's no updates here that's worth £900. I'll hold out for at least the Pixel 10 when they've got a non-exynos SOC. I'd consider a Fold but I know it could be difficult to step away from a folding phone later on.

I still have my Pixel 4a, 6 Pro and now the 9 Pro XL and do agree with everything here. I tried the samsung s23+ for awhile and overall it was good but I hated having to deal with Samsung's extra stuff on top of Google's. I couldn't wait to get back to core functions like call screening and the like. Over time I started noticing some more frequent stuttering from my 6 pro and the battery is starting to show it's age a bit. I will still pull it out from time to time and let it do updates, but I'm keeping it. I tried dabbling in some custom ROMs on it which was nice to try but it's nice to go back to stock.

you see I still have P6P and I have it again. If you go back to his release, you will find that he also took very good pictures. The zoom camera after the launch of P7P, the following updates completely ruined it. It took very clear zoom pictures both day and night and you could use it as a macro, you could zoom at a small distance from the object and the picture would come out clear. Now he tells you to go back.
I'm not getting my P9P, I'm waiting for 10 or 11, but if the other phones after P6P (P7P. P8P) have the same problem with the update that ruins the camera, it's possible to get another brand. I say it with great regret.

Why do you set 6 Pro zoom on 5x digital setting and vs 9 pro x5 optical zoom? It’s not fair. I can guarantee you that if you set 9 Pro at 4x zoom vs 6 Pro 4 x zoom, you will get better photos from 6 pro. But that wouldn’t be fair. Could you please do a similar side-by-side of the Pixel 6 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold? It'd be a great way to showcase how the newer processing and sensor tech compares to the older Pixel's much larger sensors! It'd also be hugely helpful for those of us on the P6P who are seriously tempted by the new Fold but suffering anxiety about a potential camera downgrade. I'd feel a lot better about the Fold if I knew it was at least the equal of my old P6P even though it pales compared to the 9 Pro XL's cameras!

Fortunately i managed to work out a deal with AT&T where I'll get the pixel 9 pro for free and get to keep my pixel 6 pro (which i plan to use as a home server mounted to the wall) for me it was two things that sold me. Having a smaller flagship phone because the clunkiness of the pixel 6 pro actually made my life inconvenient, and that 3000nit screen. If i didn't remember to turn up the brightness on my 6 pro my phone was basically unuseable outside in sunlight. I'd have to actually work on muscle memory in order to turn up the brightness and make the phone semi useable in the sun light. It was a bad experience. but those two things aside the pixel 6 pro was easily the best phone I've ever had, and i believe the 9 pro will be the new best phone i ever had.

I'm really pleased to see Google is finally dialling back their heavy handed "crunchy" image processing. I'd like to see them take it even further but with the Pixel 9's new image processing pipeline it's a step in the right direction. Images are looking flatter and more true to life than previous Pixel models. I'd love to see some more examples of people's faces with the Pixel 9's regular camera - that's where I feel, on the Pixel 6, image processing is really lacking compared to dedicated cameras. One other thing Google really needs to work on is portrait mode - their cut outs are by far the worst of the bunch out of Apple, Samsung and Google. Given how long this area has been untouched I have a suspicion Google is going to completely overhaul portrait mode using AI, perhaps with a software update or with the Pixel 10.

Great comparison. I loved my 6 Pro and had no intention of upgrading to the 9. I looked at this as the "first gen" AI phone and thought I would wait a year. But the phone company me offered a free Pixel 9 Pro XL if I traded in my 6. There's no way I would get that deal next year. So I got the new phone. I'm still settling in with the 9. My first impression is that I miss my 6 but I love the way better battery strength on the 9. Also the 9 is super smooth and the display is magnificent. Speaking of the display, I loved the squared corners of the 6 as well as the rounded edges of the display. I'm adapting to this new format. The 9 feels heavier to me and the speakers are not as good to my ears as the 6. I am tentatively using the AI, as I am on my Chromebook. Overall the 6 Pro will always hold a place in my heart, next to my Nexus Shamu, Moto RAZAR, and Moto X. Good times in the past and hopefully in the future....

But when you compare zoom photos with the Pixel 7 Pro, one needs to compare them at 15x because that's the setting where you get the best results from distant objects with the 7 Pro (the 30x algorithm of the 7 Pro is terrible and destroys detail).

8:47 Nearly 3 years ago I bought the Pixel 6 Pro and I sent it back because the camera issues were totally unacceptable. Horrible noise reduction (especially at high zoom factors) and it was also a joke that it had two 50 megapixel sensors that were always used as 12 megapixel Bayer sensors due to analog binning(not to be confused with downsampling). Even when you zoomed, it used analog binning and there was no 50 megapixel mode either. I couldn't accept this marketing lie and waited one year for the Pixel 7 Pro, where they advertised that they finally don't use binning for zoom photos. My impression of the 7 Pro was much, much better and the 15x zoom setting impressed me, so I kept it.
Sadly, the Pixel 9 Pro XL (which I tested in a store) makes the same mistake as the Pixel 6 Pro. In contrast to Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro, it again always uses analog binning at 10x-30x, unless you choose the 50 megapixel mode. At 10x in the default 12 megapixel mode, the Pixel 9 Pro XL only gives you 2.48 megapixel dng files, which have far less detail than the 11.4 megapixel 10x dng files of my Pixel 7 Pro. 10x-30x live photo video frames have significantly less detail, too due to analog binning. Again I can't accept this marketing lie (just like the 42 megapixel selfie camera, which only outputs dng files with 10.0 megapixel) and will wait for a phone that doesn't have this issue.

I still use my Pixel 6 Pro and always have a small powerbank with me cause' the battery for sure doesn't last me until afternoon and the phone is always in power-saving mode, but I still don't think it's worth it spending $1000 on a new phone if that's that close to mine, the power bank was $20.
If there's any bigger changes in the Pixel 10 next year, I'll deff consider it, but as of right now, my P6P works just fine.

The upgrade is in the phones design/software/new battery/modem/performance, for the camera the upgrade is barely there in my opinion and the only reason I would buy another pixel is for the camera. If you like a newer better version of the pixel with almost the same camera, this is it. I always thought that an iPhone with android software would be fantastic, I was mistaken... But in general it's a good phone and still a good camera.👍 Nice review, thanks😘.

  • @doctorsora

Realistically, the main reasons to upgrade from the Pixel 6 Pro to the Pixel 9 Pro XL are: 1) poor battery life on mobile data and 2) poor signal reception, leading to frequent call drops with mobile carrier. I constantly experience call drops-almost every other call disconnects after just 2 seconds. While the battery life has improved slightly after Android 15, it’s still not good enough on mobile data, giving me a maximum of 3 hours of screen-on time.
If you don’t have these two issues, I’d recommend waiting for the Pixel 10. Personally, I’m holding off on upgrading this year. I plan to upgrade next year when the Pixel 6 Pro stops receiving Android updates, as it won’t get Android 16. At that point, I’ll upgrade because I won’t have a choice.

I have the six Pro for maybe a few months before 7 came out . I just got an email from Verizon telling me I could get a nine on them. Was just curious and I don't see too much of a crazy difference. This six Pro is still doing well for me. And I should be going into the final few weeks of my contract so my bill should be getting a little lower. They didn't want to add a new phone and keep paying on the contract lol if the phones weren't that big of a difference.

Yup! Funny cos I'm on a pixel 6 pro right now, and my 9p is supposed to arrive in a bit over 2 weeks, but I totally agree that the curved/contoured screen of the 6 looks n feels waaay more 'futuristic' or whatever. I'm upgrading mainly for the camera improvements (yeah I know it's basically same as the 8 ) and the newest ai implementation, plus i stumbled into the last day of a great discount. Seems mad that the curved screen gets so much slagging! I wish the 9 series had it!

My 6 pro is having usb c plug issues. I have the insurance and qas going to use it but I saw Verizon offering $1k for the 6 to upgrade to the 9. I ended up going for the 9xl with larger storage for $6 a month. I had no problems with the 6 and it does fine for me other than trying to find a decent wireless charger for the 6. WL charging for the 6 is horrible. Hopefully the 9 does better.

I was really contemplating for weeks going from the p6 to the p9 because i can get the 256gb version for 60% of the normal price with the storage price match and trading my phone in.
But after watching this I've realized I still like my p6 and I'm not really sure its worth the upgrade. I can get it for about £550 but I dont know now.

The pixel 9/pro/xl undoubtedly offers improved features and performance - but is my pixel 6 pro so pants in comparison that I'm going splash £1000? Um, let me think... that's a no. When my pixel 6 eventually dies I will no doubt get another pixel because the 6 has been a very good/excellent phone - so I'll probably upgrade to the pixel 12 pro.....
