I honestly have spent half my afternoon today strolling thru Pinterest looking for the perfect blooming onion recipe. I used to have the blooming onion contraption that cut and core. With my 2 house moves I can't find it or Im not looking in the spot that it's at. I decided to look on UA-cam and see what is out there in the name of Bloomin' recipes. I am one of Steve Halls biggest longtime fans and I almost cried seeing he did this video. Why oh why did I waste my afternoon and not just go to Shotgun Red in the 1st place. Lesson learned !!!! Thank you Steve for making this recipe and sharing it with us showing how easy it can be with wonderful results !!! Thank u Sheila and JenJen for keeping Steve's recipe videos going for us to learn and enjoy the art of cooking !! RIP Mr.Hall. U are missed !

RIP Mr. Steve Thank You for sharing your knowledge!!! 🙏❤️ Sheila and JenJen Thank You for stepping in and continuing the journey as I really needed to keep going/learning . ❤🌼
I actually was a prep cook at a pub that made these and I had to make the bloomin onions. I didn't make the batter but I can say that the wet batter was more of a thick beer batter than just milk and eggs. It was like a thick pancake batter and it was bright orange. Then you had your dry batter of seasoned flour. It went wet, dry, wet and then when we put them in the fryer you put it in there petal side down and you had to give it a good spin. Then you flipped it over after it cooked for a few minutes. It was kind of like your beer batter batter but much thicker more like a cake batter consistency. Of coarse we had the fancy onion press cutter but I like the way you show how to cut it. Just figured I'd put it out there in case you wanna make another recipe with an actual batter like they did at the pub and grill. I don't think it was actually a beer batter though but it was LIKE a beer batter.
Well, i made the blooming onions. .. well... ok. I made the petals!!😂🤣 hubby LOVED them, and the SAUCE... let me tell you!! He was in hubby heaven! Thank you so much!! I can't wait to try more of your recipes! Gb~💖💝😇

Dear Miss Sheila.....I have so enjoyed Steve's cooking show with you at the camera....I hope you are doing better....time really does heal...I love the magnetic onion joke
I just discovered Shotgun Red this week. Already watched many videos. Shocked he passed away 3 years ago. Thanks for keeping his legacy alive. Where did he learn to cook all the delicious foods? Sorry for your loss
Welcome Elizabeth!!! Glad your here!! Your so welcome! He has always loved to cook and feed people. When he passed away he had made 307 recipes for this channel! You can also on this channel type in The History of Shotgun Red shotgunred.com
my local grocery store used to have a small bar that sold potato wedges and onion fingers and they did it just like you've done it. I used to LOVE THEM
Hello, just learning to cook (66 yrs old) I'm doing a lot of deep frying. I absolutely love your beer battered rings and so does my family. Questions: 1) why not just use the beer batter recipe and technique on this blooming onion? 2) what does putting the beer battered onion rings in ice / salt water accomplish? 3) why put blooming onion in freezer? Thanks ahead !!
Steve passed away Dec 2018. This was one of his recipes. You can Google all these questions. We are so glad you are watching this channel. We have right at 400 recipes on here now, We would have to research this again...😊
Wow! I thought I was the original inventor of the double dunking, sometimes when you screw up it has advantages. I can already tell this ☺️ blooming onion video is much more informative than floppy flowering root vegetable octopus gone astray air fryer crowd that avoids boiling oil , cuz like who does that?
Good question Darwin!! 🙂 I went back and watched it. He did that one back in 2017. Looks like it was Yum Yum Sauce. You can buy that in a bottle at Krogers or most food stores. You can almost drink it cause its that good. shotgunred.com
@@CookingwithShotgunRed I am sorry to hear that. May he rest in peace. I just discovered this channel a couple days ago. This guy seems like a really cool dude. He has the personality of someone you just want to be around all the time.
Hi, Great video! I found your channel from the onion rings recipe, that works just wonderful! A question about this one, if you don't mind: how do you get from a heap of disjointed "petals" to a seemingly single piece of blooming onion in the second method? that's totally not clear to me Thanks Cheers!
I've found it's easier to put the cut onion on a plate then put the flour on it from the top. Dip it in the egg batter then put it back on the plate and dump the flour on from the top and work it in. Lift it up and dump excess off. Then in the oil. It opens on the plate better and you can get the flour mix in easier no matter what sequence you choose to batter it.
Oh My! french fries, onion rings blooming onions my mouth is watering now I just need a big ole hamburger lol oh how funny you had me going magnetic onions lol Cotton seed oil I will have to remember that.
I thought exactly the same thing.....I ended up in the ER from a glass breaking just like Steve was doing....of course I was not making a blooming onion it was biscuits

Outback serves the petals in the bar area. I like them better because they are crispy all the way around, not soggy like the blooming onion bottoms.
Thanks for the tips!
Hey dude, you’re a regular guy & I like that! I looked at a few videos, but yours is the best, thank you !

Well I like the blooming onion that are blooming and the way you safely bloom out the onion!!
So glad someone did this a little easier way, thank you so much
You're welcome!
Use a tomato paste can or soup can, and sharpen the open end as a coring die. That's what I use.
Love this recipe !!! Best video for the blooming onion !
Thank you!
That looks absolutely delicious I definitely will try that
Please do!
I'd use a sifter to get the flour mix spread over more evenly.. and Air Fryers are great for this. Spray both sides with high heat oil. Yummy
Great idea to use the sifter!!!
Love these things but never tried to make them. Looks like it takes some time but worth it. Love watching him wish I had found this earlier then I did
