Had something similar in salt and sacrifice. I would join a session as a dawn light(pve co op faction) and me and a couple of my fellow dawn bros helped this one new player get the hang of the game when all of a sudden a chaos hunter "invaded"(I say this cause these kinds of players are unpredictable and can either help the player, kill the player or kill invading players and it's best to be careful when you see them.) coming in with a chainsaw sword and I thought "welp. We're screwed. He's gonna kill us" but he didn't. I guess he didn't he didn't find it fun to invade new players cause he waved at us, wanted to shake hands with us and help us. It's when a shroud alliance(pvp faction) player decided to invade the poor new player but was eviscerated by the chaos hunter's chainsaw sword. The rest of the session was us helping the new guy deal with the fire mage and he barely survived.
My first time back to DS in the remaster, I'd forgotten a lot of the game, and a phantom showed up in Anor Londo who guided me all the way to O&S. He kept putting his sign down until we got there. It was so satisfying to get the chance to do the same for other new/returning players as I was farming souls at O&S after beating them.
Dude...for real ... when you started your monologue right as you talked about Solair...genuinely brought me to tears. That was very moving, as someone who has only play demon souls remake to completion. (My first one ever) hearing your passion for dark aouls was really inspiring
Congrats on the Demon Souls victory my friend. I've also gone through my first Souls game (Dark Souls 1) and am currently on my second playthrough with plans for the rest of the series. I wish you the best of times and jolly cooperation for your next gaming endeavor.
Cheers. I gravitate towards long-form videos because those are the ones where I know there's something of substance I might actually walk away from keeping with me, as opposed to short many-parters that get eaten up and dropped repeatedly. That last one was very enjoyable and memorable.
Bro, I know how hard self doubt and impostor syndrome can be and how worthless seems when someone say to us "It's all on your head, don't doubt yourself so much", but I gotta tell you: Just believe in yourself. I only watched this video and the Dark Souls one, but the were probably the best ones i've seen so far (and i'm watching a lot of those lately cause i'm revisiting the game). Your storytelling, humor, pacing, production, editing... It's all really GUD!
The ragdoll segment is easily my favorite. And after playing with the Flip Ring on my latest playthrough, I'm upset you didn't mention how that makes the ragdolls even more enjoyable. You just yeet them to the stratosphere when you do a ninja flip.
I've rewatched the main video a few times already and I really love it. The love you have for this game really shines through, even in the sadly frustrating parts, and the ragdolls never get old. Can't wait for more!
Tyriel put the “box” (Symbol of Avarice) on his head to increase the number of souls awarded after the fight. If you’re quick enough, after a boss dies but before souls are awarded, you can put on the Silver Serpent Ring and Symbol of Avarice to boost the souls by +44%. I did it all the time when I was going for all the achievements in Dark Souls.
The DS1 Sun-bro covenant is still my fav covenant in any souls game, just fun jolly co-operation. I chose to help players fight Quelaag and even ended up being summoned to a fight club in the sewers.
Your original video was absolutely fantastic, it is probably among the top 10 best youtube videos I've ever watched. I hope you manage to capture a similar spark when you work on the next project, and that you manage to handle a similar scale to this one if you go for it. Your next few videos may very well breach into the best few videos on youtube. Be safe, friend.
I feel you big time bossman, with the entire section on why it took so long to make the video. I've been trying to make my first video for about a year and a half now and I keep on either restarting the whole thing back to square one half way through production because I started doubting my own abilities and thinking that "This is actual garbage, nobody is going to bother sitting through this" or because I got hit with a massive creative block for weeks on end and come back to go "I guess I have to start over now because the entire vibe of the video will be thrown off now that its been so long". I want to make something that will inspire other people to create something after watching from the passion and love I put into the final product, but I always end up feeling that it isn't enough. I haven't touched the project in about 2 months because of these feelings and cause other things taking up my free time, but the amount of love, effort, and passion for making something worth watching that radiates through the whole video has inspired me to give it another shot, I still have my doubts of course but seeing somebody make something of this level that's gone through similar struggles makes me feel that MAYBE I can do it. Tldr: You did good lol

I've been lurking around this channel since your first XCOM 2 playthrough, and I mean it when I say that I am so stupidly proud of you for how far you've come and how hard you've worked to get here. The care you put into the things you create is obvious. There's a lot of love and effort there and not a second of it is wasted as far as I'm concerned. Just doing my part for the algorythm, me copying my comment from the last video: I fell in love with the Souls franchise after finishing Elden Ring (having played DS3 and Bloodborne before). Elden Ring was the moment it clicked, I fell into the good old rabit hole of going back to Dark Souls, replay evey single game, watch every 10 hours retrospectives/reviews, watch vaad lore videos. And you might be wondering what I'm cooking: Well, friend, your review is the greatest review of Dark Souls I have seen so far, and belive me - I have seen a whole lot. Your review would be the greatest way to explain to a newcomer to the series why this series is so special. Thank you very much and good job! Cheers bud!
@@luiseduardoperezvilchis3698 I have come across Nioh/Nioh 2 name from comments in Dark Souls videos - I really should look into it. From a first look, it seems like a fast paced game, how does it hold compared to Dark Souls 1 - Meaning, my main liking to that/these game(s) is their hability to tell a story, the ambiance, the level design. Where would you say Nioh fits into these?
Watching this was a good time. I enjoyed watching the funny clips and where ever you are Dae I hope you find happiness you magnificent bastard! But in all seriousness Seth, I completely understand that you went through maybe not on the same level as a two and a half hour video documentary but that constant need to improve and be perfect really hit home to me. So I'm gonna say nothing other than that your videos ever since I discovered you have always been fun to watch and your voice is downright therapeutic and easy to listen to. I love your videos and the new video essays are super interesting to watch. So thank you Seth!
My favorite tradition to do with From Software games is to take the very first enemy I kill, stand on top of the ragdoll and just spin. I call it "putting them through the blender" as their bodies just spin and flail. Never ceases to make me smile. I'll do it through the game, too, to help bring some levity after some hard/tense moments.
dude... you literally made the best Dark Souls video I have ever seen and one of the best videos I have seen in general, you are incredibly skilled and talented in this video making stuff.
Funny you should bring up the reputation the games have for being hard. For years I would casually watch lore videos because the world of Dark Souls just seemed so interesting! However, I felt due to their reputation that I would just become frustrated and that they wouldn't be for me to play. But when Elden Ring came out I figured I would jump in and I was dragged in. For the majority of my 1st playthrough in ER it felt tense, like I was afraid of every shadow and thought I was going to die at any moment, and I did die a lot. But then the deaths stop being something you are afraid of and really ER gives you so much that its like you can tailor how hard of a time you have just by your in game choices. I thought eh maybe that isn't how they were in Dark Souls but no, I am now working my way through the last DLC of DS3 (The Ringed City) to finish up the trilogy since I pretty much bought all 3 DS games after I finished ER. The tools are still there for sure and as I played more I used them less and less.
I don't think we could all be more proud of you. You're doing such a good job. we all love your genuine personality, and how much effort and care you put into your videos. Please take your time and work through everything at your own pace. As long as the videos come out at some point I don't care how long I have to wait. Catch you in the next one sun bro.
You have a knack for video editing and presentation, never let the dark little Kaarth in the back of your head sway you. Your music choices, storytelling, and genuine passion shine through. Also, good choice ending the vid with Home, always the tearjerker and bittersweet ending
That segment with Dae just makes me think of Remnant II. I've enjoyed guiding new players through areas SOOOO much. Souls quality combat with that kind of Co Op play is something special everytime.
Your journey is so relatable it’s scary. You’ve got an infectiously positive presence and swoon-worthy radio voice. I’d listen to you read a refrigerator user manual. Keep up the amazing work and try not to forget to be kind to yourself 🙂
I did find you with your Subnautica retrospective, Seth, but I also loved the souls video - you've got a great voice, a great writing style, and honestly, I love the things you've done. I know things can be challenging, and you should absolutely be proud of what you've made. Don't feel bad about being MIA or taking the time you need for you - and I'm looking forward to what you bring us next~!
im going to be honest the two dark souls videos are just beautiful. every part of them i loved it. it was just incredible and it didnt feel like 2 hours man it was perfect
Just wanna say that out of the 3 Dark Souls retrospective videos i've watched yours was the one I most enjoyed. I enjoyed it heavily, and it got me to play Dark Souls again which always is good. Keep up the good work!
UA-cam placed this video when I ended my wait list, at first, I was like " nah, I never asked for a dark souls retrospective" now I ended the video and I was so freaking involved I had a tear for the losses on the way. Thanks for that video ( with the great ost and humor used) I'm definitely adding it to my favorite videos playlist
Bro. your DS1 Retrospective is one of my most rewatched videos on youtube. I love the way you conveyed the isolating atmosphere of this game with the random shivers of light that make this game so memorable. Your tonal shifts and comedic timing is damn near legendary. Please do not fear releasing stuff like this again. I'll definitely check it out!
This is 2 months old so this may not be see, but as someone that played Dark Souls before DS2 came out, your retrospective put my love of this game and its series into words I couldn't come up with, parts made me genuinely emotional, and now I want to go and play the game again!
i have been waiting for this, thank you. i love your Dark Souls video it actually made me get the game and i just beat ornstein and smough. can wait for more videos and the continuation of the dark souls vids as well
good ol' Dae, i remember a time i put my summon sign down and found a real new player, i ended up just keep putting my sign down for the whole progression of early game to anor londo for that lad.
Also the clunkiness can be attributed to missing a swing, stumbling and giving your enemies an opening. Adding to the risk of fighting as it would if you were really fighting those enemies.
Thank youu!! ive been playing a bunch of everything in the last 15 years but i have never been into souls like games, you made see it through an entirely different perspective and i think thw experience is amazing and priceless! and i just wanted to say your production and storytelling skills are amazing!! KEEP DOING YOU!! PEACE!
Can confirm the avoiding it because of difficulty thing, I had the opportunity to get it around when the prepare to die edition and had already heard about it and honestly, I wish I got it but I was under the impression it was just hard for the sake of being hard. I’m just glad ive played it since along with the rest of them
just finished the original video, it is very finely crafted. I love when creators can put the feeling a player gets from a game into a video so well. Great job!
I re-watched the main video at least 4 times now, I genuinely think it is a masterpiece and I love everything about it. I cannot explain how excited I got when you said you are going to do more of this, and I can assure you that video is phenomenal please keep it up!
Even tho I've played this game for years and seen many videos about it, the comedy you put in the video while playing still makes me want to go back and play it again 😂
20:35 Having watched the original video several times, I DID notice the lack of finger discussion. I, however, didn't want to be the "UMM AcTuAlLy!!" individual in the comments as I figured others were going to anyway. Glad that wasn't the case. 😄
I've watched both videos and they made me feel things I haven't in a long time. Between seeing all of Dark souls and all the music just poking parts of my brain
"why do you have a box on your head" right after killing a boss, equip the silver serpent ring and the mimic chest helmet and you'll get 44% extra souls from the boss.
I personally appreciate your elaboration on what you meant by the "get gud" part of your video. I for one have played Dark Souls from the start and have taken this mentality but it's not out of malice. I simply do not wish for the game I love to change thanks to the subjective whining of its game journalists that demand an easy mod stapled to every game. If anything I want more people to enjoy the games I love but I am unwilling to listen to people who demand the game change to suit them because "I can't enjoy it if x or y is like this". This a sentiment I have seen quite a few times, but I believe your analysis of the game I Iove to be one of the better ones, and I hope it inspires more people to look past just the simple challenge of Dark Souls.
So sorry to hear these vids caused so much stress. I loved both of these videos and have them on loop as I play through DS3 a second time and fear playing DS1.
Since no one answered your question, the box tyriel was wearing gives increased soul gain(and item find, but thats not relevant to this instance), and theres enough time between boss kill and the soul reward that you can pop it on in time to get increased souls
I found the sunlight maggot before going into the tomb because when i first entered tomb of the giants i thought to myself that there must be an answer to the darkness somewhere else. Its the first thing the game teaches you with the tutorial boss. If something looks unbeatable then you probably should leave and come back later.
I found your channel recently while I was on a Subnautica kick, due to another youtube duo doing a blind playthrough (one of which has thalassaphobia), and Im genuinely glad that I found you. Your commentary and humor really gel with me and has gotten quite a few chuckles outta me. I can't wait to see what else you do in the future and perhaps I'll pop into your twitch stream to lurk and have a few laughs.
I saw one of those player phantoms that show people are still there, he fell off the scaffolding in Londo and got fucking skewered and punted by an archer. Funniest shit
My own gripes with the 'get good' mentality that these games spawned, was that it affected attitudes towards other games. If a game wasn't "challenging" or "hard" or "lacked a boss fight" it go flack. Flack that was frustrating to hear because it was always framed as a fundamental flaw with the game instead of that person's choice. I prefer playing games where i get to be the most powerful character in a room, or where i don't have to strategize too hard to play. I find challenge to be a frustrating experience (due to fundamental differences between how i learn things vs how others learn) that takes the fun out of a game, which i play to have fun above all else. I hate the emphasis on difficulty as this marker of quality because its an actively hostile attempt to push out those who dont enjoy or even cant play those harder games. Its why Elden Ring (which has a much wider variety of accesibility options in its summon spirits) is my first FromSoft game. The other games just never sounded accessible to me, and likely would keave me unable to have fun playing them. Games must exist on a spectrum and there must be accessible games to those whose needs conflict with the assumed norm, lest unintentional, artificial difficulty lead to a large swath of people who'd otherwise enjoy video games to not play them. So I am glad to heard someone who enjoys Dark Souls disagrees with the idea that a game's tools should go unused just because it makes the game easier or more accessible. Because whether those with the 'get good' mentality like it or not, some people cannot simply 'get good' and they deserve to have video games that cater to them as much as those who like pushing their skill deserve challenging games.
It's a shame this video won't get as many views as the original. I just love this man. His sense of humor, his love for the game, his passion, his eloquence. I'm bromancing over here dawg!
Thanks for video!.. And you don't know 'bout Symbol of Avarice? Rare drop from Mimics, can be grinded by using Lloyd's Talismans on a single Mimic. That hat increase your gain of souls, but decreases health over time, so equipping it right before you get boss reward is common practice.
SETH SETH That end bit, approaching a project that grew and grew in scope, the imposter syndrome, I absolutely get it dude. I finished a video project, went through the same motions as you did, and I swear I couldn't have described what I've been through better than you did. I hear you dude. And the effort is worth it :), but do take care of yourself dude. I'm starting my own UA-cam journey soon and I'd be lying if I didn't say you are my biggest inspiration :D
I'm not joking when I say that I've easily put 100 or so views on your DS1 video all by myself. 😂 It's one of my favourite Dark Souls videos to watch right now, whether I need background noise or I'm just cooped up on a rainy day. And you honestly came the closest to explaining just... what it is about Dark Souls 1 that's so oddly alluring... I love your vids, I've been watching some of your streams, and can't wait to see what you make next, Seth. Especially that little idea of making more Dark Souls vids like this! 😁
I've been around since the XCOM 2 days, stumbling into your channel when someone linked to a video on TV Tropes' XCOM 2 page, and I haven't looked back yet since you're one of the most entertaining UA-camrs I've come across in a long while, and the wait between videos have always been worth it.
Here I am, watching this 6 months later, and I've honestly been trying to really play the hell out of darksouls 1 and 3 (i own them for some reason but never played them) and it's so fun but that shit just whoops my ass so bad that I literally rage quit every time
oh! the reason he had the box on his head, it's the symbol of avarice, it's a helmet that's shaped like a mimic, it gives you extra souls and raises your item discovery, but it slowly depletes your health while you wear it. you know how it takes a second to get all the souls from beating a boss? if you put it on right when you beat the boss, you still get the bonus to the souls without having to deal with losing health during the fight, I'm not sure if the item discovery works, like getting the taurus demon to drop the demon greataxe, but it can multiply your souls and it stacks with the silver covetous serpent ring it does not stack with the gold covetous serpent ring, but it does the same thing as the gold ring, and, like the gold ring, it stacks with 10 soft humanity to give you 410 item discovery
Hey dude! Thanks for making this video. I enjoyed every moment of it! Don’t let your doubt hold you back, you have a good eye for making these types of video’s! I really likes seeing your coop stories, that was GOLD 🎉

I thought eh maybe that isn't how they were in Dark Souls but no, I am now working my way through the last DLC of DS3 (The Ringed City) to finish up the trilogy since I pretty much bought all 3 DS games after I finished ER. The tools are still there for sure and as I played more I used them less and less.
the dae part made me smile, that is truly the comradeship of the soulsborne series
I don't think we could all be more proud of you. You're doing such a good job. we all love your genuine personality, and how much effort and care you put into your videos. Please take your time and work through everything at your own pace. As long as the videos come out at some point I don't care how long I have to wait. Catch you in the next one sun bro.
here is my comment for support, keep up the good stuff
You have a knack for video editing and presentation, never let the dark little Kaarth in the back of your head sway you. Your music choices, storytelling, and genuine passion shine through. Also, good choice ending the vid with Home, always the tearjerker and bittersweet ending
The 2 hour long video was so amazingly perfect to just listen to while working. It was the perfect amount of love for a game as well as info dump
Super happy that you uploaded another video, I miss your editing lol.
Just wanna say that out of the 3 Dark Souls retrospective videos i've watched yours was the one I most enjoyed. I enjoyed it heavily, and it got me to play Dark Souls again which always is good. Keep up the good work!
" 1 bolt to the face and a back full of mace" is my favorite quote from you Seth
Love the writing. Sometimes it can be "dad" hokey but I like the dork sprinkles.
THANK YOU THANK YOU!
After just going through both the main and this video, i CANNOT wait for the rest of the series.
Thank youu!!
ive been playing a bunch of everything in the last 15 years
but i have never been into souls like games, you made see it through an entirely different perspective and i think thw experience is amazing and priceless!
and i just wanted to say your production and storytelling skills are amazing!!
Great job!
15:02 "its inhabitants kind." Jumpcut or slow fade to the skeleton wheels
I re-watched the main video at least 4 times now, I genuinely think it is a masterpiece and I love everything about it. I cannot explain how excited I got when you said you are going to do more of this, and I can assure you that video is phenomenal please keep it up!
Even tho I've played this game for years and seen many videos about it, the comedy you put in the video while playing still makes me want to go back and play it again 😂
20:35
Having watched the original video several times, I DID notice the lack of finger discussion.
I, however, didn't want to be the "UMM AcTuAlLy!!" individual in the comments as I figured others were going to anyway. Glad that wasn't the case. 😄
Tyreal was wearing the Mimic head helmet, it has a chance to drop from mimics after chucking a Lloyd's Talisman at it
I'll be looking forward for whatever you make next, man. You're the man, man!
Isn't Dae one of InfernoPlus's friends who helps him playtest stuff?
I've watched both videos and they made me feel things I haven't in a long time. Between seeing all of Dark souls and all the music just poking parts of my brain
This and the main retrospective are some of the best videos I've seen on Dark Souls, It really just shows how massive the world and game is!
I really hope Dae went on to beat Gwyn god bless them
Damn. You did a good job homie, am sorry you were being hit in the head with depresso and doubt. It was a really good video. So was this one.
I hollowed, I gave up on my journey in dark souls one. But after watching both of these videos, I'm coming back and I'm beating that damn game.
"why do you have a box on your head"
right after killing a boss, equip the silver serpent ring and the mimic chest helmet and you'll get 44% extra souls from the boss.
Man UA-cam needs more content creators like you. if you ever get around to the rest of the souls series would gladly join you on the journey.
And thank you for the extra glimpse into your retrospective experience.
So sorry to hear these vids caused so much stress. I loved both of these videos and have them on loop as I play through DS3 a second time and fear playing DS1.
cant wait for his Elden Ring retrospective, the Soulsborne 180 heelturn from grim to bright
I actually did stumble into the sunlight maggot on my first playthrough
Thank you for making such a beautiful video essay. You obviously put a lot of effort into it and it shows. Take it easy
You do excellent work. My eyes lit up when I saw this upload, and I eagerly await the next. ♥ Stay amazing.
SETH

That end bit, approaching a project that grew and grew in scope, the imposter syndrome, I absolutely get it dude.
I finished a video project, went through the same motions as you did, and I swear I couldn't have described what I've been through better than you did.
I hear you dude.
And the effort is worth it :), but do take care of yourself dude.
I'm starting my own UA-cam journey soon and I'd be lying if I didn't say you are my biggest inspiration :D
...we gotta find Dae.
I have found your channel very recent;y and I think that you are so underrated and deserve way more subscribers
This is one of my favorite souls retrospectives. I await your ds2 and 3 ones in anticipation.
Love the extras. Also Tyriel may have put on the symbol of Avarice for bonus souls as it only has to be equipped at the moment you gain them
I'm not joking when I say that I've easily put 100 or so views on your DS1 video all by myself.
Here I am, watching this 6 months later, and I've honestly been trying to really play the hell out of darksouls 1 and 3 (i own them for some reason but never played them) and it's so fun but that shit just whoops my ass so bad that I literally rage quit every time
Sorry but that bit with the t posing ghost utterly slayed me
I haven't done tomb of the giants yet and am on bed of chaos rn on my first playthrough and I got that helmet that lights up
oh! the reason he had the box on his head, it's the symbol of avarice, it's a helmet that's shaped like a mimic, it gives you extra souls and raises your item discovery, but it slowly depletes your health while you wear it.
you know how it takes a second to get all the souls from beating a boss? if you put it on right when you beat the boss, you still get the bonus to the souls without having to deal with losing health during the fight, I'm not sure if the item discovery works, like getting the taurus demon to drop the demon greataxe, but it can multiply your souls and it stacks with the silver covetous serpent ring
it does not stack with the gold covetous serpent ring, but it does the same thing as the gold ring, and, like the gold ring, it stacks with 10 soft humanity to give you 410 item discovery
Hey dude! Thanks for making this video. I enjoyed every moment of it! Don’t let your doubt hold you back, you have a good eye for making these types of video’s! I really likes seeing your coop stories, that was GOLD 🎉
jesus the attack from smough scared the hell out of me sethorven and also wanna say awesome video
Omg it’s a lazy purple style extras. Absolutely solid and amazing.
