You have some kids out there with good trained vocals who can really good cover a song, but there´s Angelina who makes every song her own. She becomes the song, the words and their meanings. This is not only a very rare thing, it´s for her age nearly impossible (surely not, because she is showing us the opposite) to sing that way. If we speak about prodigies in music, she is certainly THE prodigy of our life. Angelina is way beyond her age with her meaningful interpretations and soulful voice.
Angelina speaks 3 languages, plays 4 instruments, writes & composes her own music, she recomposed this song as well.
The look on her face when she finishes is probably about how she could do it better, as she is known for critiquing her own performances, but ALSO could be her thinking "Where did I leave my dolls?" LOL
lol, yes, the end of this one is among my all time favourite Angelina expressions (right after the look of disgust when the conductor couldn't get the tempo right in practice for At Last).

Yep! She'll do that to you. What to say. How to say it. She is amazing! You were kind to put her voice in her teens. Most crank it up to 40 or 50. This is her arrangement. At 9. At 9!! Watch Screamin' Jay Hawkins to see how her brain took that all in and made extremely mature musical decisions to turn it into this masterpiece. You won't get to see this kind of vocal hijinks in other videos. But you will see Angelina making amazing decisions about how to best present the song. Her fans will stay with you for Angelina. The most supremely gifted young singer in existence. Once you learn more about Angelina, the person, the more you will realize that she is a bona fide musical genius.
You will always get big response from Angelina's fans. Her fans are passionate about supporting her, because of how much passion she pours into her art. You will also find that Angelina fans are some of the kindest people around. I used to always think that it was just because that was the kind of people she attracted. ....but having been around for a while, I have witnessed a few people that started out as crotchety old bastards, and then after listening to Angelina for a while they just become more kind, more tolerant, more loving. That is the effect she has with her voice. That is the power of music done right. Angelina has always said that her dream is to "spread love with music", and that is exactly what she is doing... one fan at a time.

In this age of corona virus quarantine, I can't tell you how many enjoyable moments I have found watching first-time reactions to this iconic performance. They always produce happy feelings, which are very much needed these days.

6th the old soul in her voice.

I know how she came across this song probably when she was three or four, but to come back to it at eight and arranging the lyrics and music then putting it all together after just turning nine. Watching her interact with the musicians during rehearsals and making last minute changes to the piano seeing her make the changes and handing them to the director and then recording. This is truly epic for someone essentially eight. In fact it would be epic at any age.

It's not that I want to detract from Angelina, but I wouldn't say 'completely'. Listen to this version by the composer and you'll see she drew many aspects of her performance from this. Fair is fair. @@nyima04011 I think you misunderstood his semantics. I myself can't verify this, but every report suggest that she wasn't coached into the choices that was made. In that sense the arrangement was hers. We don't always know who inspired an artist, but if they were inspired by noone, we call them uninspired.
Deborah, if she didn’t draw some aspects of her performance from Screaming Jay it wouldn’t be much of a cover. I will say I think this cover by Angelina is one of the best that has been done and the closest to his original that I have heard, there have been a couple hundred covers of this...and a 9 year old is among the best.
Angelina is, here, barely nine years old.
She is not out of tune; she even screams in key (Alan Papier), squeels and growls in tune, without losing her breath and her rhythm.
She is equipped with powerful lungs and very sensitive ears. I would add that she must hear sounds that we cannot distinguish or perceive.
She recreates the original song in such a fashion that her cover becomes a semi original when we compare both.
Her demeanor, gestures and body language correspond perfectly to he ones that are used by some bluesy jazz vocalists.
This is her first classic.
She performed her second classic with the military band of Norway when she was twelve. She covered then James Brown's iconic It'a A Man'World.
When you will react to her interpretation of the song, make sure to have the lyrics on hand or on the screen. You will appreciate fully the kind of phonetic transformation that she does with some words and expressions in order to give to the lyrics its proper
color and sonority.

We always read that reactors are stunned by voice related to her age, (and of course it is true) but the argument should be done is to judge her voice, interpretation and performance also independent of her age. And if she would be 25, then most would agree that she is top class in her performances......

One of the most versatile female voices on the planet, from age 10-13 she sounds as good or better than many of the songs she covers...”I put a spell on you” she did a couple of months after she turned 9, it was released when she was 10. She is special...

Nice reaction! She was 9 years old in this video. She's 14 years old now and she still putting out great music. If you want to see her more current stuff, she performed on America's Got Talent: The Champions this year in January. She blew away the audience and judges when she sang Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. This was the first time I've seen or heard of her and I've been hooked since. Now, I come to UA-cam all the time now, pull up a music video of hers, and listen and enjoy her greatness! Keep up the good work and enjoy this ride!
You mentioned about her learning the rhythm. She doesn’t just learn it. She learns it and then she manipulates it so that what she’s singing approximates that standard downbeats in the song, but dances around them, creating shadows, depth and interest, but all without deviating from the song’s path.
For example, this song is in 6/8 time. You can count out 6 quick beats (8th notes) in each bar with two triplets (1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6) and with emphasis on the 1st and 4th beats. When she does that little squeal (roar) at 3:15, it doesn’t start on the downbeat where you expect it (which would be the 1st beat in the bar here). She hesitates, and hits the squeal one beat late, on the 2nd of the 6 eighth notes in the bar. It has a powerful subconscious effect on the listener and an even more powerful one if you are aware of it. The fancy term is “syncopation”. It's rebellious, it creates unexpected negative space, it can be jarring -- but without it music would be shit. And it's REALLY hard to master which is one reason why there aren't many people who can sing like Angelina. What’s really cool is the way this 9-year old pushes through that roar with her left hand, in perfect syncopated synchrony with her voice.
This is, of course, what the fancy people mean by the term “phrasing”. She sprinkles subtle little details like that throughout the performance, giving it a much richer, more sophisticated sound and feel. She has the musical maturity of a seasoned professional many times her age.

@@mrpeppery There are so many little details to be found in this one. One really small thing that I haven't heard/read anyone else mention: after the sax solo, listen to how she sings the word "do". It's like she's echoing the little "ornaments" the sax player just did at the very end of his solo. I wonder if that was planned or whether did she did it on the spur of the moment, as an "ad lib".

Another thing that I can’t wrap my head around is how, about the long “”wOOOooOOOoooo...” at 7:22 I could swear I hear her voice resonating two different octaves at the same time. I’m sure it’s not the instruments because the two notes follow each other too perfectly. I’m probably just imagining it 🤪
@@mrpeppery Hmm. I hear a lot of higher harmonics (I assume) in her voice - as if she's intentionally turning up the "raspiness" of it. (Although I can't figure out how, exactly. I can't emulate it, myself.) Maybe she just needed to clear her throat (which I am doing right now, as I type this). [grin]

Absolutely the best performance by any child ever on any song! - Period. Actually, I seriously doubt if any adult can match it. Angelina tried it when she was older, but it wasn't as good as this one. If She can't do it, no one can
@ It ABSOLUTELY is can't!!!!! Regardless of the screaming damage to her vocal cords, her innocence is gone. The screaming is not what makes the performance great. She will never be nine years old again. She was never able to recreate the same raw emotion of the entire song. Many of her "Younger" songs will never be the same as maturity has taken away the innocence that influenced her performances. While she has gotten better as a singer, the little child in her is gone forever. Humans get a first time emotion ONCE! (e.g. "What A Difference A Day Makes")

I am certain she will become a superstar but fear that she may not continue to sing so many genres but settle on one or two, as so many other singers do. If she does limit herself in this way it will be a massive loss to the musical world and I for one will be very disappointed.

Glad to see another one of us blown away. She's fearless. She's all in. She's doing stuff many adults only dream of. And she wasn't just a one trick pony. She's gone on to pile masterpiece on masterpiece. How about her covers of Rhianna's Stay or Sam Smith's I Know I'm Not the Only One? Or her covers of Adele or Lana del Rey? Everyone of them is at least as good as the original.

Sorry I am almost a year late to the party. I do hope that you get my comment. First off, She studies music since age 4 at the music academies of Oslo and now LA. Yes MUSIC as all genres, even classic.
Second, the story to this video as told in interviews by members of the band. At this time Angelina was already a superstar in Norway. That day, her parents had rented that studio and the band for her angel. AJ went in introduced herself, shook hands with every member of the band and gave the studio boss her arrangements, you saw in the beginning, as her wishes. The band hadn't recognized her in the beginning. As soon as they went into the song, it clicked and an immense respect began to grow for that tiny little girl. This day they nicked her adoringly THE BOSS. Today a lot of pro musicians around the world do the same. There is a video in one of her fan channels about teaching a professional keyboarder how to play exactly how she wanted it done.
Always friendly, always well mannered. You cant be angry with her. All of you out there please stay save and healthy. German greetings
Angelina is special and a few reactions back today I called her a "monster", she is gobbling up music with her voice like no other. The "monster" that she is is neither fearsome nor scary, but she takes over music and leaves some of us in a puddle of emotions. I love this monster sent to us from the heavens. I have been a rock solid fan of Angelina since I first heard her AGT performance of Bohemian Rhapsody. I have watched like others most of her songs multiple times. I have watched so many that I just realized that when I see her singing at age 10 I'm actually thinking 'oh this was when she was older' when she's actually a child! And now I think that at 14 she is old! Mind boggling! LOL. What am I going to think when she's in her 20's? Am I the only one that has started thinking like this?

I've arranged these to maximize (or at least magnify) the differences from one song to the next. These are not even my six favorite AJ performances (although the last one actually _is_ my favorite overall), but they show off her vocal versatility a little better than a list of my actual favorites would. I also specifically avoided any of her performances on _Norway's Got Talent_ [Norske Talenter] because all 4 of them need to be reacted to in order. (See my long comment on your "Bohemian Rhapsody" reaction for details.)
I believe that someone must have gotten to Angelina's family and told them that the things that she did with her voice here had the potential to damage her vocal chords. She has sung this song after this without the vocal gymnastics. And she has never, since this, used those techniques in any subsequent performances.

Angelina is a child prodigy she actually wrote this version in sheet music her director looks at the corrections Angelina made. Look closely she has a prayer candle with a picture of the original artist she looks upward as if showing honor to that artist. I think she also listen Nina Samone’s version. You can tell she’s following the sheet music and she knows every musicians part. Angelina is super super smart she knows that this song Has to be sung in a very low-key with a lot of grit otherwise it would not be believable. She has An incredible Range. This song could not be sung higher because then it would sound like a child.
