He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to the microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of her young self (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this! "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the style of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his manner is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a way that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). She starts low, rising in intensity throughout and finishes in an unexpected and practically operatic style. You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). Nine years and two months old. Consider that though following the original Jay Hawkins lyrics she arranged the lyrics and the music the way she wanted. You see her in the beginning writing notes which she gave to the director and you see him smiling. These are reported to be changes for the piano. He stated in an interview that she was very polite as she called them her wishes. There is video of her rehearsal for this song telling the musicians how she wants it played. They affectionately refer to her as the boss. Consider also these musicians talking to their friends and family about the set they just finished. I am sure at this point they realized they were part of music history.

When she auditioned for Norways Got Talent at age 7 the judges commented afterwards that she sounded like she has been drinking whiskey all her life!

I am not a jazz fan but this is a different story. An old soul into a young girl. Love it.

What a difference a day makes would be next an outside concert in Norway and then feeling good another outside Norway concert. Her journey is an emotional roller coaster ride for anyone that follows it! She has changed my perspective of artistry in the music industry. Truely humbled by a child!! Enjoy the ride👍
