Interior Lights Not Working? GET RID of This!

  • Like many vehicles from the late '70s and early '80s, C3 Corvettes featured a Courtesy Light Delay Module (CLDM) or Courtesy Light Timer which kept the courtesy and dome lights on for several seconds after you entered the car. Its purpose was to add convenience along with a touch of luxury.
Unfortunately, after a few decades, these gadgets have a tendency to burn themselves out and you end up with courtesy lights that no longer work which is inconvenient and not very courteous.
When it comes to solving the problem, you have two options:
    1. Buy a new board with fresh electronics and replace the defunct board. Reinstall it and your car is then back to normal.
    2. Bypass the board altogether and have "traditional" courtesy lights that turn on when you open a door and off when you close it.
Either approach will fix the issue. The first alternative will set you back approximately $80 whereas the bypass option will be pretty much free (provided you have a short piece of wire to bypass the module.
If you don't want to use a jumper wire (they can become disconnected), you can also splice the two white wires and be done with it. That's what I chose to do.
So now you know how to get your interior courtesy lights working again.
In this video, we will be addressing a common issue with late C3 Corvette models: the courtesy lights not working when the door is opened. This problem can be quite frustrating, so I will show you how to fix it with a step-by-step guide.
I will start by explaining what causes this issue before moving on to the repair process, which is relatively simple and can be done at home with basic tools.
By the end of the video, you will have the knowledge and confidence to fix the courtesy light problem in your C3 Corvette.
Make sure to watch till the end so you don't miss any tips or tricks!
    Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

I cannot thank you enough for your channel. I currently have my entire dash apart to install a Vintage Air air conditioning/ heating system on my ‘78. My courtesy lights have not worked since my memory can remember. I followed your video and sure enough, bada bing bada boom they work!!! I switched out the incandescent bulbs for led and couldn’t be happier. Thank you again for your videos.

Hi Jesse. Glad to hear you were able to get the courtesy lights working again. It’s so frustrating when they don’t. I also plan to use LEDs since they look great and are safer than incandescent bulbs. Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

Nice fix! Just wanted to mention that at 5:20 there appears to be scorching on the board by the grey component which I believe is a transistor. If you know someone who’s experienced with electronics, maybe the board can be repaired. Also I looked at my ‘82 service manual and the light blue wire on the door switch does go to the alarm system. Looking forward to your next video.

Thank you, Steve. You’re right about the board showing signs of overheating. I’ll save the module in case I want to have it repaired at some point, but for the time being I am fine with the courtesy lights operating the “traditional” way. And thanks for explaining the function of the light blue wire and for watching! 😊👍🏻

Hello there is the car your working on a 79? Mine is a 79 no dome light or courtesy lights.I don't know if I have a delay module but I will check. Tomorrow I am going to start with the fuse and go from there. Your videos are the best. Thanks Brian

Hi Brian, and thank you for the kind words. This one is an 81, but I believe the delay module was available on 79 Corvettes.
You will also want to eliminate the door jamb switches as the cause for not having working interior lights. I have a video on how I fixed mine. ua-cam.com/video/yPAFkf5BfSk/v-deo.html
As you probably know by now, these projects usually are an elimination process.
I hope you get yours working and I would also suggest replacing the incandescent bulbs with LEDs. Good luck! 😊👍🏻

I noticed the courtesy light fuse was broken. I replaced a 30 Amp that was what was in there. The lights and dome light came on then it blew the fuse bummer! I replaced with a 20 which is what it calls for and so far they all work Halilulla!! Nice to have working lights. Thanks again Brian

My courtesy lights also do not work. I have been told that the fuse that it is hooked up to on the fuse panel is the cigarette lighter fuse. Everytime I go to switch that fuse for a new one. It gets hot and blows up. I do not think my car has the delay harness and I am pretty sure it is bypassed just like yours. Is there anything else that I can do so that fuse does not keep blowing up.

From what you describe, there’s a short somewhere in that wiring harness. A hot wire is getting grounded somehow resulting in a blown fuse, which is a good thing. Otherwise, the wire would get hot to the point of starting a fire.
You will have to trace it and repair as needed.
If someone bypassed the courtesy lights delay module, chances are the problem can be found right there. Or at least it’s a good place to start troubleshooting.
Good luck, and thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻
