Oh man so this took me a really long time to realize ... That weird looking watch thing in the bottom left shows you day/night cycle but it took me a while to realize it's also a compass. The little dots that float around are the objectives. I ran around a lot with my scanner out the first little while, didn't notice it...
You can travel from anywhere, not just by taking off in your ship. The star map and the missions menu are your friends. Simply highlight the mission you want, or the planet on the starmap, and hit "R' fro set course. You can travel directly from them unless you are overencumbered. You also mostly cannot direct travel from space stations, caves, and buildings.

Super helpful tip. I'm a pack rat so fast travel was rarely an option for me. (You never know when you might need a random baseball trophy lol
