Absolutely NOT the greatest vocalist. She over exaggerated her songs and while truly excellent with phenomenal range, she’s no Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday or even Karen Carpenter. Those ladies moved people to tears. Mariah simply doesn’t do that for the discerning aficionado. I bet, 100% that Mariah would accept that fact.

She is in top form here: rounded, open sound throughout with the adding of difficult, high belts, complex melisma and, of course, seamless transitions… From her VOL perf here and at SNL, we can tell that her voice was already refined and hard to match in the debut. What a gift! 👏

Wow. I remember that for this performance, I was 19 years old, overseas in the Persian Gulf in the Iraqi War...or just before. We were on a 6 month Med Cruise and were rerouted to the Persian Gulf through the Suez Canal...and I remember seeing Mariah Carey’s debut album in the ship’s store...and I bought it, having no idea who she was. I just loved the cover. I was an instant fan. It seems unbelievable that that much time has passed. We are the same age. I do remember thinking that she was going to be another Whitney Houston...but I didn’t foresee just how much of a legend she would become. Time is a strange thing.

I agree, everyone has preference for the tone (which for me is the most beautiful ever) but also had an amazing technique especially after the debut era and at her peak, but in terms of range and mastery over her range, versatility, musicality and vocal skills Is unbeatable, there is none that has all the characteristics of Mariah's voice especially in her prime, so it is clearly the best voice, She can sounds pleasant in all her inhuman range.

kso 40 they are both talented but mariah isn’t just a singer but a song writer and producer as well. all of her songs are completely self written or with just one other person. whitney took other people’s songs written for her and her specialty was making them her own and giving them the life they needed.
Wow. I remember that for this performance, I was 19 years old, overseas in the Persian Gulf in the Iraqi War...or just before. We were on a 6 month Med Cruise and were rerouted to the Persian Gulf through the Suez Canal...and I remember seeing Mariah Carey’s debut album in the ship’s store...and I bought it, having no idea who she was. I just loved the cover. I was an instant fan. It seems unbelievable that that much time has passed. We are the same age. I do remember thinking that she was going to be another Whitney Houston...but I didn’t foresee just how much of a legend she would become. Time is a strange thing.

For me I always knew I was a Mariah Carey fan but like u it was very organic because I happened to just like her music it was not for anything superficial. and I didn’t even know that those songs hit number one. I remember in the year 2001 WKTU was celebrating her 31st birthday and they were playing MANY Mariah singles! but I remember being glued to the radio at the age of 10 trying to hear fantasy. Because by that time all they played was the remix as a recurrent on the radio. but my neighbor kept playing the original and I remember not being too familiar with that one but being in awe of it

It's an electricity that ebbs and flows in your body and your voice feels elastic relaxed warmed up and flexible .But in spiritual terms, that is called using your body as part of your craft and art. and in some cases....letting God do the work and you're a vessel to create something beautiful and divine.🙏
Omg i was just watching her LIVE performance of WBT/Fly like a bird at the Grammys and majority of the comments were saying she was lip synching because of her hand gestures and i was like WTF?!! Real fans KNOW she has ALWAYS moved her hands like that. Thats how she gets it out, it helps her sing better. You can tell she does it subconsciously.

I agree, everyone has preference for the tone (which for me is the most beautiful ever) but also had an amazing technique especially after the debut era and at her peak, but in terms of range and mastery over her range, versatility, musicality and vocal skills Is unbeatable, there is none that has all the characteristics of Mariah's voice especially in her prime, so it is clearly the best voice, She can sounds pleasant in all her inhuman range.
