    You've had the chance to use this tool, but it's not worth the price at all. For the cost of this tool, you can buy three other GPS devices from different brands that don't lose the signal near buildings or trees. Its compensator was very uncertain and inaccurate. It lost calibration many times and took minutes to recalibrate. The tablet is very heavy and not user-friendly with unnecessarily large icons, taking up a lot of screen space and preventing multiple information icons from being displayed. The camera-based measurement is inaccurate, unworthy of a surveyor, and very slow as well. Leica's iCon products are much better.

    You would have got better results if you followed Leica's instructions for image capturing, manually going through and reviewing the photos per each point, walking at in a regular paced arc plus a few other manual specified timing/distance guidelines, and using the tilt function with best practices (not exceeding 30 degrees when possible (30 isn't Leica's max, I think it's between 45 and 60 degrees) and making sure the tilt is towards the open sky if possible.) I get that you're making a demo video though so it's hard to focus on surroundings when you have to make sure you're in camera frame. It's amazing the imagery functioned as well as it did when it was collecting like that. Are you going to show the point cloud feature that the GS18i offers? It's pretty cool.

    One more thing, in my T version this GS18 has an antenna for 4G, this one doesn't have one? Thanks for everything you do! Good Luck!

    They sell the new Trimble tilt sensor stuff with the phrase watch the rod not the bubble. They say you can shoot power outlets on vertical walls with it if you are getting enough satellites. Try and shoot a power outlet with it. I am curious. I don't know why a surveyor would really need to though. Sidewalk example was a good example.

      I was unlucky enough to have to lift up an R12i onto vertical walls and fences at a professional tennis court used in a large tournament. I had to collect all electric, fiber optic, coax, and telephone lines and associated features (ie various boxes). They were EVERYWHERE because the courts had to broadcast to TV and all of that. Scanning wasn't an option because 1) we are an all trimble outfit. 2) Trimble scanners are a joke compared to Leica, the one we had couldn't even capture the points with the associated image. 3) Even if they could... the office guys wouldn't feel like tracing out which line is which in the comfort of their chairs so they were having us do it in the elements. I know I'm not being fair here, but truthfully, I'm just a surveyor. I have no extra tools. When a bunch of lines enter a box then leave out through 50' of conduit and only 3 of the 7 lines come out exposed... I don't know what is what anymore. Especially after 6 days of doing nothing but this (for the most part).

      @@PeeHooo Hi with my channel @globalsurveyor - please subscribe, I show a few videos of getting fixed in tough places and plan to do more. As the Captivate firmware was updated this has made a real improvement. Before there was a feature called Xrtk which gave a false fix +/- 0.1m and then go better in tough situations...now Xrtk is gone with new update and survey areas in Australia where I am, are better than before.....but more testing is planned.. Thanks for the comment... I really enjoy Rami's videos too.

      @@globalsurveyor Already did! I will check out your videos. I'm not familiar with Xrtk or even certain what it means. It is some kind of correction service feature by Leica? I'm still quite new to this field. I'm currently studying it. I have done some training jobs but they had all the corrections services/features already setup for the GNNS receiver. I know it was using SmartNet but what services it included I'm not certain. I was also using GS18I and was quite impressed by it performance. I know that it was running the older FW version so I'm interested to hear how they made it even better! And I 100 % agree, Rami makes awesome easy to understand videos!

    • @RamiTamimi
      @RamiTamimi  Рік тому

      No, the internet connection allows you to access a virtual reference system to correct the positions that you observe through satellites. The satellites still need to be visible, and right now, you must be outside to see enough satellites to get a singe solution.

      Let us know. I had the pleasure of testing the gs18I and was impressed. I made the measurement with the pole tilted practically to the ground and the difference between this measurement and the measurement made with the pole vertically was only 4 cm. However, in the forest area I had a problem with catching the fix, but when he succeeded, the measurement was reliable. I would like to test the trimble r12i because I heard it is better in the woods.

      I have to choose between GS18i & R12i in near future. I have used R12i in wood and under big canopy trees for a big topo survey recently. It fixed all the places where I shot. When picked up big canopy pine trees it took little more time to give a fix. But everywhere I go I heard "OBSERVATION STORED" voice message. We used a local R10 base for RTK. But please share with us what was your selection and comments. Thank you Rami for the content.

      The R12i is leaps and bounds ahead of the GS18. You get a stupid-accurate IMU and the ability to work under tree canopy reliably. Much more bang-for-your-buck.
      Plus when it comes to GNSS, Trimble reigns supreme. The company was founded on GNSS positioning and are the experts in the field.

    Your rod tilt is not good practice at all. The single observation you stored is not going to show the loss of precision induced by tilting the receiver so far that a large part of the constellation is no longer visible for the receiver.
    Horrible field practice that is a marketing gimmick. No survey professional tilts their rod beyond 45 degrees and expects reliable results. The fact you demonstrate this bad practice illustrates that your review is marketing fluff and not to be trusted. When you go under the porch you are doing the exact same thing as tilting your rod to an extreme angle. Removing satellites from the solution.
    You want to give useful reviews? Stop regurgitating manufacturer marketing talking points and demonstrating marketing gimmicks. You don't say if this is a paid promotion, but my smell test says it is.

    • @RamiTamimi
      @RamiTamimi  Рік тому +5

      Hey Chris, this is not a high-level research project that requires multiple iterations to prove a concept, it was a demonstration of a feature found on this product. When I'm tilting the rod in extreme ways, I am not promoting this as a professional practice, but rather a demonstration of the capabilities of the technology. My UA-cam channel is an educational resource but also an entertaining platform for surveyors and geospatial enthusiasts. I do market products, and yes, they pay me, that's why the "Includes Paid Promotion" banner appears at the top of all my videos that I was paid to feature products.

      @@RamiTamimi thanks for the content Rami. I can't believe you responded to such a moronic comment in such a classy way. I found the same thing when testing the tilt sensor on a control point while leaning the staff in a fairly unreasonable way (sub ~40mm differences in E/N - RL was still within 15mm or so). As someone who has conducted many feature surveys in rural areas where sub 10mm accuracy is not required for many topographic features, but tree canopies and uncomfortable terrain are plenty, the tilt sensor would have been a dream during those surveys.
