From an outsiders perspective, the initial refit had to be one the biggest challenges. I would have lost my mind during that 1st year, especially when the keel was wobbling back and forth. You guys did an amazing job overcoming an overwhelming amount of challenges, and did it with little money or experience. My hats off to you both.
Boat and truck videos are my favorite videos you do 😉. I am on your page because I love how you both have provided me with an escape away. Also whether boat or car it’s all so inspirational. So if you were asking me … I’d say the truck videos HAVE TO BE ADDED! It’s a part of who you all are.
I am kindda shocked your videos on the Seafarers Certs in Gibraltar tanked. The idea and ability to become a commercial seafarer was a golden. Anyone planning to go around the world should seriously do whatever it takes to do that also. I thought about it myself but, we are pushing our 60's and really just plan to stay in the Caribbean.
Me ➡️😳 when Dan quickly referred to Kika as “wife” a few videos ago. Me ➡️😏 hearing you confirming in this video that my middle aged brain still computes and my hearing is still good.
You guys did an amazing job of keeping this entertaining and engaging, the time just flew by. Great mix of Q&A and a "day in the life". I was a bit daunted when I saw how long it was but my wife and I it up on the big screen while we were working and... well, it made working pretty challenging. This is for sure one of your best videos.
Same😂 A bit intimidated at the length but I put the video on and folded laundry and tried to do kitchen work. Had to stop and rewind a few times. 😂🤗 Finishing it up over the course of a few days. It felt like I had a new video, several days in a row! Wahoo!❤
We're loving this Q&A! What a treat, to have almost three hours of Uma! Our family has been enjoying 30 minutes at a time, spreading the joy over several nights. It's been a delightful new window into your life. We love how your two different minds work together.
I'm very surprised the fire and sail safety training videos were less popular. They did feel quite different in style from your usual life-aboard adventures, but I thought they made an interesting diversion for a couple of weeks. The ones I personally enjoyed less were the rock-climbing breaks; but then, I suppose, we're all different. Don't get too concerned about maximising meeting the market needs! That forces you into competition with everyone else, and will ultimately drive you into their mould. Just be you; we'll happily tag along.
ADHD conversation was so interesting. I was diagnosed ADD in my 30's. I fought it because I knew I didn't have the H and I couldn't separate it into just ADD. The Dr told me I had just learned to make it work for me keeping all the balls in the air and being highly productive. He told me most Type A personality people are ADD and their brain just learned to work around it. Very general statement but just a starting hypothesis. Learning why I was me, was so enlightening. I only take medication when I have a life event that adds another layer and makes things hard!
2:08:58 sad and very true ! Designer (90%) don’t own a sailing boat or have very little experience and “flawless” home interior design is driving the new ones: so many sharp corners/countertops/steps lack of handrails just to mention a few… true is the old scheme was perfect and nothing major needed to be done . I hope you guys will highlight it further . Ciao
13:35 In Homebuilt Aviation they have a saying 90% complete / 90% to go. For a plane it's when the exterior is complete, and maybe even painted, making the plane look almost done, but all the systems still need to be installed. It's hard for most people to grasp how much time it takes to run all the piping, wiring, etc, not to mention those final finishes.
This was a fantastically _different_ video! The time flew maybe because I had nothing else to do on this fine Saturday. I feel like a know both of you way better than before. The usual videos don't have nearly the same closeness and insight especially into both of you. Would I choose to watch a nearly three hour video again? Probably not. But if somehow I knew it was like this one, maybe so!
You guys are so real and relatable! Not only to I aspire to have your go-getter attitude, I feel like you are the type of people we all want as friends. I love the Q&A format.
A once a year Q&A would be awesome 👍👍👍anything more than 30 minutes for a Q&A is great, I didn't realise until 2 hrs 20 that this was nearly a 3 hr video I was just having so much fun watching it, was a bit surprised there were no questions for Dan about what it's like living with both Kika and V. Mini versions of Dan and Kika would be an awesome gift to the world when/if your ready to give the world that gift 👍
Love the thorough boat rebuild. Between Uma, Delos 2.0, Arabella, and Tally Ho, it's awesome to see the details of pretty much every construction method. Take all the time in the world.
This was lovely to watch, you guys doing your thing. It gives us a glimpse into your everyday lives. You should definitely fit in more stuff like this into your episodes. Like Dan getting a haircut, life does not get more real. It makes us part of your real existence. Cheers!
Your comments on interiors of sailboats is very accurate. I tossed the fixed dining table and designed a new one and a custom bracket to allow storage against the main bulkhead so it is not an obstacle or obstruction when not in use. The main cabin became spacious and perfect. The galley revisions added functionality and storage. It works better than the kitchen in our house. It’s amazing how little thought and consideration goes into boat interiors.
I really enjoyed this - it was long and I wouldn't want to have videos like this all the time but it was great to "catch up" with you hear your answers to some great questions.
100% agreed with the don't ask if someone is going to have kids. We couldn't have kids, but wanted them so badly. Through egg donor IVF, and a surgery to fix a problem with my uterus, we were able to have 2 kids. But it was expensive and so much emotional termoil. IF that is something you ever think about, I am very open to talking about the whole process.
This was a cool way to do Q&A, thank you! About the truck adventures, I'll watch all the videos you post and really hope to see the land adventures too.
The reason I'm not watching videos about truck adventures is - they're not sailing! Sailing, especially when the motor you have is electric, is traveling in nature, as much in harmony with nature as possible, harvesting the energy you need to travel from the wind without degrading what you're enjoying. That's a big part why I've kept following you guys of all the sailing channels I used to watch - the big-picture sustainability of it all. Including the fact that you decided to repair & renovate an existing boat, instead of wasting natural resources in building a new catamaran or something. It's inspirational. Driving around on land in a truck, on the other hand...
Definitely would love more regular Q&A’s. Here’s my question for next time: I discovered your channel in the pandemic during lockdown in the UK and binged from step 1. However when I got up to date my wife and I noticed your videos could have been filmed entirely before Covid and we wouldn’t be able to tell - I think it was years until we saw a fleeting shot of someone in a mask and in this Q&A you mentioned it briefly which I feel like is the first time you’ve acknowledged it? Was this approach conscious? I’ve always wondered if it was a creative choice you made to help your viewers (or you?) have an escape from the realities of those years? It’s difficult for your older videos to know when they were filmed. Where were you in 2020? Were you locked down in the UK?
Having ADHD myself and renovating a house by myself. I love to see a video about how you plan the refit. I can probably learn a few things from you both. Love your videos and the things your doing!
I enjoyed you answering all these questions. I am surprised your truck video's tanked. I would love to see a tour of your truck and to explain how you modified it and how it has become your home these days.
Great Q&A❤ What a wonderful way to spend one's youth. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 for Haiti. I'm deep in the midwest of the U.S. and we have recently welcomed our first wave of new Haitian Immigrants. It's a deep red area but still good people so the children, as usual, are leading the way. FYI: I am nearly 100% UA-cam since retiring but listen to "radio" podcast when driving. My ADHD+Menopause has been a big challenge. Travel has helped. Watching travel/adventure channels ❤. As you age it will be important to watch your estrogen production because as that starts to decrease your dopamine levels decrease.
I have always liked to explore new places and things, never thought of going a different way back as anything other than being curious about what's around the next corner. Thanks for your explanation!
We have a dear friend who's husband had sleep apnea and didn't do anything about it. Sleep apnea can cause strokes, heart attacks and other health issues. The husband had a stroke and spent 10+ years in a rest home before passing away. Sleep apnea is not something to ignore. I hate hauling my CPAP around, but both my wife and I sleep much better! I know you two know this, but I mention it for all those listeners out there who may have sleep apnea and are avoiding doing anything about it.
As a interstate truckie, I have never watched a podcast video. Podcasts are great to listen to while eating away at the miles. I have a converted bus / land yacht and your defender seems like it would be perfect behind it for those hard to reach places that the bus wont fit over here in Australia. I would definitely be interested in more content regarding the defenders setup. Yes it would be a heavy towed vehicle but I would not consider it a trade-off for the versatility.
Loved this video. So honest and comprehensive. Particularly liked your shoutout for Beau and Brandy. They are so under appreciated and such wonderful humans that always seem to be plagued by adversity. Well done.
I usually skip Q&A videos because their commonly ramshackle character. This is my all-time fave of those, however. I don't care a whit about visas and career choices, but I really really really love seeing you two doing well.
One more. The best of life occurs when what isn't enough 'alone' becomes more than we can imagine 'together'. Weakness becomes strength. The unsure footstep takes us onward. Humanity is our prospect. Love is all that really matters.
Absollutley loved this. We would love to see a session on your truck too. Interested to see how you've decked it out now. Seriously preferred sponsor promo this way, found the info easier to take in, and ordered LMNT straight away. All the best to you guys.
I've been a customer of LMNTs for a little over a year now. The just sent me some gift packs with their chocolate salt packs and they are SOOOO good in coffee!
Kika, as someone with a fear of the dentist, I told the dentist that I needed laughing gas to calm me down during my last couple of visits to the dentist because of a cracked tooth. She even gave it to me for my cleaning. It costs a bit more, but it helped me get through the process. She was even able to put a crown on my tooth that way. It doesn't knock you out, it just chills you out to the point that you don't feel nervous.
Question: if i may ask, is it realistic to wait for a used yacht to come into my budget zone? I have a two year plan out for the purchase of a yacht because of budget. I like the solar ideas at this time in technology. Would you ever go full solar no sail. Solar seems its right for a guy in his 70’s. I am learning all about yachting for personal use. Freedom is the goal. I like B and B as well and subscribe! Amongst others. Parley, lavagabond, etc.
The content is insanely awesome you guys make it when I saw you tearing out the guts I was like oh my God and it's just been flawless. You're such a good team
56:44 the other issue for a lot of people is the issue of sailing on a schedule. When you're a weekend sailor and you have to be at work on Monday, you can't wait for good wind and have to turn on the diesel.
A bit intimidated at the length but I put the video on and folded laundry and tried to do kitchen work. Had to stop and rewind a few times. 😂🤗 Finishing it up over the course of a few days. It felt like I had a new Dan, Kika, Uma video, several days in a row! Wahoo!🙌🏻❤
I arrived t your web site thru a circuitous route starting with Tony Fleming, the boat builder. Prior to his starting to build beautiful yachts he and his engineering school buddies drove 25,000 mile from England to South Africa and back in a military surplus truck in 1959 & 1960. Worth the watch. VERY cool. Best wishes for the rebuild and the journey.
,K, you are right about your challenges in feeling clueless about certain tasks. Don't feel bad about it, you are the reason and part of this wonderful journey. I like you guys and been following you
Need less to say , you’re extremely dynamic couple , and witnessing any thing you do is been a great journey, been e yacht Captain for 27 years , I can defiantly put in perspective, your accomplishments, as a couple, as film making editing and navigating on a 28 ft boat , “sailboat “ Probably a good info for people that is not familiar with the coast of labor and materials , putting in perspective why for you is cost effective to do this project is the fact that the project it self you translated in a great adventure, marketable and fun to do. But and this is a big BUT , if anyone wants to follow your project, is just not cost effective, again ,congrats, blessings for you guys
@@SailingUma depends were you hire the pros , in Florida it will cost you doble than a new one , especially on the dry , marinas don’t let you work or hire out side contractors, only if the are on there list and the over price you to pay the owner of the yard , average hr . Labor rate $150 , and sorry I know your boat is 38 ‘
And on the other hand you dismantle the boat 100% you’re reconfiguring, your boat is going to be one of a Caine , again my respect for you guys 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
FYI - when on passage my wife and I tried all the regular watch schedules (2,4 and 6 hrs). We finally settled on a 8 hr schedule. Since most people operate on a 16 hr day with 8 hrs sleep, we just staggered our schedules. During the "normal" day hours we are both awake. Come around 8 pm one of us would go to bed. By 4 am. One is rested, the other is ready to fall asleep quickly. Worked for us.😃
I work on seagoing tugs . We keep 6 on 6 off. Unless we go over 600 miles in a single passage and have mandated extra crew for three watches. Then we do 4 on 8off (for the same money too). It is expected that all emergencies are responded to by everyone. I have found 8 on & 8 off, very fatiguing, because I end up waking up at the time I went to bed the day before. I function better at sea if I wake up at the same two times each day. 6&6 , we get one long sleep of 5 1/2 +/- hours and the next watch off 3+hr nap. If you miss one sleep cycle the next one is not too far away. 4&4 is brutal for lack of rest. 12&12 is too long on both sides. The longest I have gone on 6&6 was two days short of 4 months straight,in 25years at sea. Just MY 2¢.
Such an informative and personal glimpse of your life. Glad to know you are married and that you have regular contact with Haiti. Miss the old beautifully appointed and well lit Uma; can’t wait to see 2.0. I suffered when you were freezing. If I ever lived the dream it would only be tropical ports. Eating the yogurt melon reminded me of how good a papaya with a scoop of ice cream is.
OMG i try to watch every video you 2 put out and I didn't even know you guys are married, as for children it would be great to see a little kika or dan. we got a baby boy in march and I have to say having a child is the best thing you could EVER do in your life. Trust me!
Loved the answer on ADHD.. I am planning the move into a van, for multiple reasons, and can’t get moved off the bubble to get started. It’s encouraging to see the example of your successes over the same challenges..
I have a piece of land and I built a little compound. I made it constantly better throughout my life. But then my family actually harassed me and scared the living heck out of me with some crazy idea that I would leave my pandemic sanctuary and start coming to these gigantic family cookouts. "Can you pass the virus please?" And that is when I decided you can't ever be safe on land. They know where you are. I have two sailboats now.
Really enjoyed spending time with both you two ‘chatty Kathie’s’: enjoyed the swim, the trim and the cutting two tomato bowls. Very educational as well, loved hearing yalls perspective on all the topics discussed. Of course I was sad that there was ‘no wood’ presented during the video, although Dans backwards swizzle into the lake was A HOT MESS. I totally get you two celebrating the ‘children within’ plus no good reason to mistreat a dog although you’d love to co-exist with one. There’s nothing wrong with choosing to be childless either: there’s so much to learn about oneself and the world, I’m for keeping it simple like that. The fact that you both have carried on mucho internal inspection makes living in the now so much more satisfying as well. Thanks for being two powerfully motivated individuals. I’m hoping to hear more about learning methods to live with adhd or whatever. Y’all inspire me to live better and more productively, and I thank you. Stay safe, stick to the daily plan. We be here watching amazing skills, thrills and medicinal laughter. All the things I relish as an old hippie lady (geezer, tbh) used to watching the ‘prairie schooners’ (dust devils) sweep and or dance across the Texas plains.
Speaking of a new boat (1:05:00): How important is having a forward helm in an aft cockpit (as opposed to a center cockpit)? Also, do you look at other modern boats for design ideas? The Kraken 50 comes to mind as being a mix of tradition and innovation. Your thoughts?
staying focused on the project is super hard . In the 1970,s I fabricated my own GT championship winning car..starting with an idea / design in my head and ending up with a physical working project was super hard .. I know how tough it is .
Now this video was awesome to be both audio and video. I wouldn’t call it a pod cast, at all and wouldn’t want to. I love looking at your expressive bodies too much. Just saying.
It's Europe, guys. We take holidays! I know nothing about Haiti. Kika is the only representative of Haiti I've ever seen. If she is typical, it's special. I guess that Dan has understood that. I hope there is peace there soon!
As an ADHD Dyslexic guy as well, your explanation of your life experience is exactly how i ended up in the same place doing the same things as you guys. Keep it up! However, I dont think my youtube is not my path forward at this point in time. So I'll just keep my architecture job.
ENT specialist with apnea treatment experiece: That apnea treatment is a actually a real option what we call "oral appliance" for those with mild disease and able to protrude their jaws. Nice diagnosis and improvisation. What i may also suggest is using sleep positioners(such as tennis ball in a back pocket or a small wearing a backpack during sleep) to prevent supine sleeping.
I have an oral appliance, and it's made all the difference. It basically does the same thing as Dan's mouth guard, but more expensive 🤑. Nice job with the DIY, but I'm glad to hear you're finding time for a dentist.
Dan - I suffer the same lower jaw causing airway to get small. Yeah I tried an OTC snore guard but was too painful bc it moved my teeth. I'm too scared to do much more. Glad you are on the path to better sleep! Thanks for the Q&A.
@@gdiup9241 Prescription appliances should be more comfortable because they're custom made for your mouth. Of course, be ready for your dentist to try to upsell you on teeth straightening treatments.
The one question that didn't get asked, that I was hoping would be, is how did you come up with the closing for your videos. Who is whistling at the end? I just love it.
Thank you for sharing. Through your sharing I realized I needed to investigate ADHD in adults. I knew I had dyslexia (self diagnos), but after listening to you both I looked up ADHD and saw myself. When I mentioned it to my family, let's just say they were surprised I didn't know that. 😂 I enjoy your content no matter what you share.
Thanks so much for a fantastic Q&A, guys! Questions for next time: do any of the suspected lithium battery failures at sea concern you? How confident are you in the safety of next-gen electric sailing technologies such as engines, batteries, and ancillary systems?
If you ever do a Q&A again, I'd be super interested in how you store and organise your video footage for the UA-cam videos. Keeping track of when you filmed what on what camera and what you mentioned in the videos and how you'll cut it all together sounds like a herculean task.
Thanks guys! Loved the Q&A , it was a real pleasure spending the day with you! Love you and your channel! And if that is videos of you travelling with your defender(truck), I will be happy, I just enjoy your content ❤❤❤
If you both are really enjoying yourselves and pushing yourselves to learn more so you don't get lazy minds, you're exactly where you should be. Whatever you're doing as long as you film it, will be successful. Climbing mountains, building unique houses, giving sailing lessons, yoga by the dangled, it doesn't matter. You're both pretty fun and inspiring. We get to live vicariously through your adventures. Keep it up. Fair winds wherever you choose to be. PS Was going to suggest cork or Rockwool.
Adriatic islands, Greek islands, definately Cyprus! NZ is awesome. Some friends fell in love with American Samoa and stayed there for the last 30 years
My favorite part of your video was that you did just do a Q&A. You actually lived your life at the same time. I made it much more fun to watch.
From an outsiders perspective, the initial refit had to be one the biggest challenges. I would have lost my mind during that 1st year, especially when the keel was wobbling back and forth. I loved the Q&A. Probably not a format for every week, but it really provides more depth about your lives and the nomadic lives you live. Thank you.
I've been following you since the beginning...this is one of the most enjoyable and informative videos you've ever put out.

Even just to understand how to respond effectively to an emergency it makes sense. Those videos were super interesting too.

I rarely comment but I do watch all your videos. You guys are both absolutely fabulous. I just love watching you no matter what you are doing.
Perfect. I really enjoyed it. the length is totaly fine. Had the whole week pieces of it

I like both video and audio podcasts. I listen to the audio while driving.
It takes so much effort to produce videos so much appreciated.
The podcast rant was epic. Highly appreciated.

Sleep apnea has also been shown to increase the chances of getting dementia.
Well done.
I love the build content and would love for it to continue forever
I usually skip Q&A videos because their commonly ramshackle character. This is my all-time fave of those, however. I don't care a whit about visas and career choices, but I really really really love seeing you two doing well.
So worth it. Thank you…. And I like following your truck life as much as your sailing life. Keep ‘em coming.
3hrs of entertainment ❤❤❤❤❤
I've been a customer of LMNTs for a little over a year now. The just sent me some gift packs with their chocolate salt packs and they are SOOOO good in coffee!
100% @BeauAndBrandy. Truly awesome people.
Don't think that you're overly sensitive about going to the dentist.
My sister basically needs gas just to make an appointment.
🤣🤣🤣
You guys don’t take Xanax?
You do feel nervous but you dont care.
AND YOU ALSO BECOME A SHORT TERM COMEDIAN,WHEN EVERY THING BECOMES FUNNY
Question: if i may ask, is it realistic to wait for a used yacht to come into my budget zone? I have a two year plan out for the purchase of a yacht because of budget. I like the solar ideas at this time in technology. Would you ever go full solar no sail. Solar seems its right for a guy in his 70’s. I am learning all about yachting for personal use. Freedom is the goal. I like B and B as well and subscribe! Amongst others. Parley, lavagabond, etc.
So many interesting topics covered! Thanks for taking the time to film this!
The content is insanely awesome you guys make it when I saw you tearing out the guts I was like oh my God and it's just been flawless. You're such a good team
Great presentation with lots of comic relief and swimming breaks.
1:41:23 I remember that Megan on the O'Kellys made boat cushions, curtains and small sail repairs for other cruisers.
Excellent episode! Good to hear your philosophy of do a bit then do another, until you look back and say, well we did that!
Wahoo!🙌🏻❤
Loved the Q&A video, great to get your thoughts on the various subjects! Would definitely like to see more truck videos!
It is so awesome to see you guys laugh and play whilst you work 💕
I arrived t your web site thru a circuitous route starting with Tony Fleming, the boat builder. Prior to his starting to build beautiful yachts he and his engineering school buddies drove 25,000 mile from England to South Africa and back in a military surplus truck in 1959 & 1960. Worth the watch. VERY cool.
Best wishes for the rebuild and the journey.

This was really great, amazing, open minded! So much information, reflection and visions! Seems you are really happy. Take care!
Very interesting episode even if it wasn't about sailing. Identified with a lot of it and couldn't believe it was actually 3 hours long !
,K, you are right about your challenges in feeling clueless about certain tasks. Don't feel bad about it, you are the reason and part of this wonderful journey. I like you guys and been following you
Need less to say , you’re extremely dynamic couple , and witnessing any thing you do is been a great journey, been e yacht Captain for 27 years , I can defiantly put in perspective, your accomplishments, as a couple, as film making editing and navigating on a 28 ft boat , “sailboat “
Probably a good info for people that is not familiar with the coast of labor and materials , putting in perspective why for you is cost effective to do this project is the fact that the project it self you translated in a great adventure, marketable and fun to do.
But and this is a big BUT , if anyone wants to follow your project, is just not cost effective, again ,congrats, blessings for you guys
It costs less to hire pros to refit an old solid hull than it is to buy anything new.
Just MY 2¢.
Are you going to keep all your electronics and electrical equipment or are you going to renew. Keep up the good work .Regards Don Queensland Australia
Hello Dan and Kika. I just want to Thank You Both for the video! I've enjoyed it very much.
Yes I'd love a project management video. Great idea!
Great video, I spent my Friday evening watching you guys
Fun video. Watched over a couple of days when I had time.
My ADHD helped me watch this video all the way through. I stopped and restarted several times.
Loved it, watched all of it. Don't give up on subjects that don't get huge views, they are all part of our watching experience.
Yesss do more of these!!! Love the length perfect for listening during cleaning or working
Your future - you are story tellers, currently via a boat and Land Rover. The future is bright keep living and sharing the experience!
8😊хз
It’s a Defender: ford engine and jaguar parts. That’s what he said.
Great Q&A, feel I got to know you better :-) Now I´m going to check out the norwegian playlist.
The one question that didn't get asked, that I was hoping would be, is how did you come up with the closing for your videos. Who is whistling at the end? I just love it.
Loved the Q&A WATCH YOU'LL ALL WEEKEND
Thank you for sharing. Through your sharing I realized I needed to investigate ADHD in adults. I knew I had dyslexia (self diagnos), but after listening to you both I looked up ADHD and saw myself. When I mentioned it to my family, let's just say they were surprised I didn't know that. 😂
I enjoy your content no matter what you share.
I enjoyed this week's Q&A. Thanks
Very informative… I enjoyed hearing about your plan and your life plans and can’t wait to see what the future brings…
PS
Was going to suggest cork or Rockwool.
Our friends Ben and Emily do narrow boating in England and they renovated an ambulance to do road trips too. It's the best of both worlds
This was so much fun! Definitely more of these q&a ´s, please.
Adriatic islands, Greek islands, definately Cyprus! NZ is awesome. Some friends fell in love with American Samoa and stayed there for the last 30 years
