I wasn't expecting uncle Andy to be such a gem...he even threw in a Peter Sellers reference!
It was the final ironic ' God be Praised'for me 😂
Your house might be warm and be able to breathe, but can it hang a door?
Beat me to it.
Only on XL shirts due to length of logo 😂
It sure didn’t pocket the door now!
Isn't Hangadore a Harry Potter character?
I just built a garden shed and hung the door. I thought of Scott when doing it... And said out loud when done "but can you hang a door? YES I can!" Haha
Philosopher Raymond. Need more of this.
I love ray's honesty, can relate.
Absolutely. Hmmmm, thinking one's age in terms of laps of the sun. It's possible that novelty/distraction has the figure appear briefly more palatable. Yeah, nah, it's gone...😢.
" that's the worst part know we're going to spend the day together " savage 😂 why do I get the feeling he's not joking
As a dutch person myself i think both might be true. But also might not. Its subtilly. In The Netherlands people get along well by making harsh somewhat true jokes towards each other. It brakes the ice and you know what to expect from one and another. Regarding ray, i think he made a joke. He wasn't joking about how confronting bday's are. In a weird way when we point out bad things about someone it's a sign of love we care for that person. The closer the person is to you the harsher the jokes. Irony is a big part of our humor culture aswel. So things can be true and there might be some sadness to it but we laugh at it for the same reason. @@mikesmith5391
As a Norwegian, it feels so wrong yet interesting to see the siding attached directly to the framing like that, with so little ventilation between. We always have a gap of at least 25mm, usually 36 or 48mm, between the framing and the siding, which is open to the air top & bottom to allow air to circulate between the layers and remove moisture. The insulation is also held in place by an outside "windbreaker" housewrap, which prevents the circulating air from blowing through the insulation and remove heat
Very interesting to see the nuances of building styles across the world!
dude they have wooden slatted wall, its all breathable XD
That is what is done in NZ now too. Typically older houses didn't have it - but they also didn't have insulation, and the timber was Rimu or Kauri.
Rain screens are done on new homes, only became code after leaky home syndrome. The house wrap is typically open to stop flapping, it doesn't stop air getting in and around the insulation. Sheathing or rab is used to stop airflow but its rarely used here.
What you're describing is just a more modern construction technique, which is used in a lot of countries. Scott's house is an old cheap temperate climate build: we have the same style of construction all along the West Coast of the US and they have it in Australia too. All from the same era ~60-120 years ago.
In many places the full standoff rain screen isn't required, but a breathable membrane is used on the entire exterior as the primary vapor barrier.
I remember visiting NZ in Southern hemisphere winter 50 years ago, and the houses were freezing. No insulation, often the doors/windows were kept open a lot during the day, kids running in and out in bare feet or jandals (flip-flops) and shorts plus a wooly jumper (sweater) - standard operating procedure. That was true of my great grandmother's farm in Taranaki and it was true of my aunt's (then new) construction in suburban Auckland. It was just the way it was. You'd go to bed with a hot water bottle.
That's the context for a lot of the construction of that time. Scott's house is from that time.
This is a fabulous retrospective. Enjoyed it. I identify with so much of it and I’m not even a builder.
I loved this episode, where a lot of people seemed to be having an off day, makes me feel human ❤
Love the garden Jess has planted and grown in front of the deck area. Scott builds a great house while Jess builds a great home ❤️
By the year 2100, that house is going to be a museum, run by volunteers, charging a few dollars to show people around. Perhaps showing them the legendary Scott Brown's last pocket cavity door that he installed, before inventing a new type of door that made the old pocket cavity ones redundant.
Impressive how far the garden has come, considering you guys come from apartment gardening. Perhaps Jess should start a gardening channel! haha
That app will be a massive tool for builders! Well done.
Happy birthday ray, keep smiling 44 is the new 24ish 😂 keep the good work coming..
It really is though, especially now that most people don’t smoke, have lead in everything and use proper skin moisturizer.
Happy Birthday Ray, you're just a young pup. Uncle Andy good guy.
You can have some of our rain Jess, not stopped here….. hi from 🇬🇧
I love Uncle Andy.
Great inclusion of your growing list of characters and collaborators
Very cool app. I like seeing someone that's not 16 years old working on stuff like that! Its great to see you take so much time to refit those windows. Tell Ray we're all thinking good thoughts for him. Cheer up, mate.
I love Ray, I can't wait to see him put you to work on his house 😅
Great to see the extra help!!🎉well done family..looking good.😎Happy birthday Ray🎈🎉
Thank you. Happy birthday Ray. :)
Happy birthday Ray all our best wishes. Hi to Jess and her family they still got to see your new home. Scotty another great episode thank you. The David Attenborough commentary was great Scotty you can always move into that feild if you get tired of carpentry.
Hey Scott and Jess, keep up the great work with the videos, really enjoy watching them 🤙🏻
That's the first time you've shown a shot of Lake what a bonus to the house setting
and yes Happy Birthdays
Malc's in Perth WA ♥️
I love you videos! such chill vibes. especially nice seeing the sun and your lovely garden. its not like that at the moment in the UK it feels like its been raining since October. I love to sit back and relaxing while drinking a cup a coffee on a Saturday morning and watch you work hard making your house beautiful. 😎
Happy Birthday Ray! And Jess your Uncle is priceless!
Great Ep!! Happy Birthday Ray🎉🎉
Working spec is awesome. It’s great to show apprentices how things all go together. 3 dimensional is a lot easier to show
Happy birthday Raymond, you’re a legend!
Happy Birthday Ray!!!
Happy Birthday Ray!
Happy Birthday Ray. Great video cant wait to see the finished bedroom 🥴
Great somg choice after the 8 minite mark. Reminds me of the bangers you introduced me to in the past. Cheer Scott - keep up the great work.
Your Unc is a legend!
Ah, Truman Track beach. One of my favourite places.
Happy Birthday, Ray ! = )
I have a 1940’s early early state house and I renovated a few years ago now with complete insulation. It had building paper unlike you so I just put insulation straight in. Has been good and certainly a worthy task. Closed up a lot of the air leaks around the floor and the house has been a lot warmer and drier. Ended up relocating the house too. been in the house for 11 years now and it's hard to find the next one because this one is so good! early adopter of what youre aiming for too. plywood and steel beams, reformatting layout but keeping the look and feel of a classic nz home.
Mine is a 1960s direct fix rimu weatherboard in central plateau with building/tar paper behind the weatherboard. I assume its therefore OK to put the insulation directly into the external walls. Plus you can use full width 90mm insulation. The timber used was never gauged in those days and measures 92mm in most places.
Gefeliciteerd Ray, wens je al het goede toe.
I shared the working spec on my linkedin
soon apprentice chippies will be working with APPLE GOGGLES following a 3D model haha
More progress Scott, you will soon run out of things to do. Thanks for the latest exciting video.👍👍
Happy Birthday Ray lekker ding!
Love your channel. Always informative. I noticed in this video that your original weatherboards are edge primed in red lead.A very effective coating but with it's toxic problems, now banned. I also notice that you are a great back and end primer and I applaud that practice. I do find the practise of using water based paints quite alarming as they are libel to allow water ingression and basically serve a reduced purpose. An oil based product such as a primer or undercoat will provide great longevity and help preserve the timber and the work that has been done. Really like the retrofitting of the double glazing.Thank you for all your effort in producing these wonderful videos.
Oil-based paint all the way. Oil-based paints eat into the wood so grip strong. Acrylic-based paints just sit on the surface.
Good job brother
happy birthday ray!!
Mate that was fascinating how you were rebuilding that window. More detailed stuff like that would be great.
Build tight ventilate right. Get an air tightness layer in and MVHR
That was a terrific video! Much love for Unca Andy :^)
"this is my step-ladder
... I don't know where my real ladder is"
what are you doing, step-ladder?
I watch all your videos with my partner who’s a tradie but I would LOVE to watch a video or two on Jess’s garden!! I’m looking to tackle a garden of my own!
Hey Scott and Jess! Two ideas for you. Maybe you could add location names to the b-roll footage, some of the places I'd love to add to plans for a future trip. Additionally you could always make a video on places to visit. But then again, it wouldn't be good to turn your time off into more work. Thanks!
it's not their time off if they're using it to create content - that has to come out of their content creation time.
Andy's a natural!
Cool app, downloaded and will definately crack it out when needed. Went through a few models and learned something new already. Also, love that you do your own double glazing and show us that it isn't that hard... Right?
Love the insulation and ventilation details. Its a rarity that anyone does it that well in nz.
I love that the automated subtitles get confused with you Kiwi accent and write the word Wither instead of Weather ;)
Happy Birthady Ray
We definitely still vent attics in Western Canada. And use those "hold downs" to keep the insul off the roof sheathing at the eaves...
Little different on the wall set up though: we'll have (from the outside- in) exterior cladding, vertical "rain screen" batons, breathable "tyvek" membrane, plywood/osb sheeting on studs, insulation, vapor barrier, interior cladding/gyp board. 👍
That app is a brilliant idea
Love the lawn mowing in jandals/sandal. Did you use the blue strapping in the bedroom/lounge walls, I don’t remember seeing that.
That app looks great getting it now
43 times around the sun.
Nice perspective.
Please do a Occidental Leather owned, Badger Toolbelt review. Would be cool to see your insight as its always in the convo for best tool belt setup
So expected that segway to really happen!
Shout-out to Uncle for the Peter Sellers joke; my dad would be chuffed 😊
Happy birthday Ray, I’ll be 43 next week.
Curious to hear know the name of the black product used in your ceiling?
We have an A-fame that needs insulating from the inside, but maintain breathing space. Cheers C from Brightwater 🤙
Happy Birthday Ray. Apparently we're the same age 👊
Cool looking app
Scott I really like your new glasses would you mind sharing the make and model?
Is this missing an intro scene? Felt like it needed a “let’s talk about insulation…” still love the details of how you are approaching it!😊
Over in England they have the plastic window frames
good work as usual , the pair of you (4 of you really). Just wondering if the existing window stays are up to the job of handling the wieght increase with the new D/G unit - 5kkg to 15kg I think you said?
Happy Birthday Ray! Didn't Jess make you a cake? Liked the attempt at a Sir David Attenborough discovery.
No rain till June. Such dry soil… that’s because in good ol Wales is rained near enough every day since last June!!
Nice. Like the app…
I find the thing about breathing, damp etc very interesting. In my country houses are built with 20 plus 5 cm of insulation in walls and 30 in roof. According to our code the wind proofing should be 20x more open than the damp barrier. The houses breathe through a ventilation system that regenerates 90 per cent of the heat from the exhaust air
If houses are supposed to breathe then mine is a mild asthmatic
11:17 the wild “what you doing you idiot, but I love you” side head tilt.
I could hardly see Jess when you did you David Attenborough in the garden in her plant camo overalls.
So right Ray birthdays just remind you each one of us is getting on
Ray is a funny man. Ray is a wise man #VoteForRay
Hey Scott, are you ever going to do insta reel or tiktok videos. I'd love to see short videos of what you get upto in-between each weeks video
Ray is like Kramer. You feed him once, he'll never leave.
Healthy humans breathe, and healthy homes ventilate. 🤓
Another fact filled fun day in Nelson! Here’s two more : the Dutch are currently the tallest race on earth and Ray at 195cm is actually nearly 6’5” at 6’4.77”. Looking forward to seeing it finished too. Lloyd
Jess you should have your uncle on more often. Enjoy his plain open comments!!!
pretty awesome mahi mahi mahi mahi mahi scott brown carpentry vids this weekend ive just watched it bro every well good mate ive just looked up some barn style sliding doors for my dream bedroom makeover etc Saturday 16th off march 2024 ive watched it all ready today on Tuesday 19th off march 2024
If you are in construction industry check out working spec - it is incredible. That is how details should be done for every home / building - would be much less mistakes and re-work.
Very interesting with how insulation works in NZ. Here in Southern California, it’s all inches thick of styrofoam and stucco.
Just clip unc saying that and use it for all your square space transitions 😂
Happy birthday to Ray I will be 43 in September on the 15th also I am 6 ft 4 also and I'm going to go check out that working spec app
Were they cut scenes of Kaikoura Scott? I heard you said you were going there to Whale watch but it got cancelled due to rough seas. I ask as I went there quite a few years ago to go swimming with the dolphins so it has a special meaning for me.
I instantly looked at Workingspec as an app, because I was looking at something similar. However I was a little dismayed that I could not create my own models / details that could then be turned into animations.
Is it possible for something like a plugin / integration to Sketchup?
Air gap alone isn't enough in many cases, you need a little air movement in the gap as well. But I guess your weather boards aren't air tight so you are probably ok.
One small mistake. The moisture membrane allows moisture to go into the home as well as out. Which is what you want. You want it to dry in all directions. Thats a problem with leaky home syndrome eifs houses where they can only dry into the house.
What is up Scotty .....me ol' mate .
Love your safety glasses. Where did you get them? Would like to buy a pair like those. And not the normal ugly ones 😅
LOL @ baiting the yanks (and me) with 6.4 feet, 6 foot 5 Ray is. As you were.
Hey Scott. An architect friend of mine warned me that some glass companies inadvertently put their low E glass stickers on the wrong side by mistake. Meaning the IGUs get installed the wrong way around. He reckons it happens all the time. Not saying Viridian are guilty of that but something to be aware of.
I need more Unc'.
Scott, are you still having building supply and price issues in New Zealand?
I love that you put in imperial measurements using decimal-feet, a measurement that will not provide useful context to people who actually use imperial.
When do we go to the square space ad? 😅
One imagines that one of these days we'll get bored of the carpentry, the renovating, the gardening, even the coffee... but will we ever get bored of the Squarespace segues?
