Wow, that was a scream at the end. If you're having issues with your horse, check out Steve Young Horsemanship. He never loses his temper or his patience. Pain is the worst motivator. Free Spirit Equestrian if your horse is already good. Horse Plus Humane Society if you want to be sure your horse doesn't end up in the slaughter pipeline or you want to adopt. There's a full circle of life shelter within a day's drive in the US. They also help internationally. Netflix series Heartland is G rated so even the kids can watch. Free Rein reminds me of Saved by the Bell just with horses. Wildfire - just not G rated. Hope that helps.

    The stallion squeal:
That is the sound my stallion made when someone started shooting at the herd from the highway. I know this because I was there when the shooting started.
Thankfully, the poachers were lousy shots, there were a lot of trees in the way - I could hear bullets hitting them, and my boy instantly got the mares running out of the paddock and safely cornered in the arena.
I have never heard a stallion make that particular sound before - the best I can describe it is like the sharp, high-pitched squeal in the video combined with a steam kettle whistle.
    The last one, the scream:
The chestnut stallion in the pen - Should you ever hear that call coming from your stabled horses, never ignore it; it is a Red Alert call for help.
It could be that your horse is expressing extreme separation anxiety and calling for his companions or attention.
It could also mean that the barn is on fire.
I have witnessed two separate large racetrack fires where scores of horses were trapped; those screams are something every horse owner/caretaker should be taught to recognise and to respond to without panicking, and they are something that you will never forget once you hear them.
They are even more chilling and hair-raising in real life.
I still have flashbacks whenever I hear even a recording of that call.

Oh. Oh my. I have never heard that scream before - I do not think that is a bad thing! That was chilling. But I see the importance of knowing what it sounds like - knowledge is the first step to not panicking, and if that's the sound I'm hearing, I will need to train myself not to panic so that I can help immediately.

Perhaps you did not have a mare and young foal available, but the soft, almost without a voice, wickering of a mare to her foal is the sweetest sound I know. I had a mare that I had helped with a difficult foaling and she made that noise for me later also and pressed me close to her many times years later. I'll never forget it.

There's also the "where's my breakfast?" neigh. My horses live opposite my kitchen, as soon as I open the shutters in the morning that's the first thing I hear.
I used to work on a stud. The most beautiful sound ever is a foal's first high pitched call and Mum replies with a deep nicker: "I'm here darling".
I've been around horses for over half a century and have never heard a horse scream. I hope I never do.

Regarding snorts: a short sort of soft snort is the equivalent of a sneeze. For this reason, horses use snorts to communicate.
A strong, moderate length snort means the horse is ill or in pain. When my horse does this, he usually then points to what ails him - a hoof with an abscess, for example.
They may also use this call to comment on illness in others. If i am not present at the barn for an extended period, when i show up again my guy gives the illness snort as if to say, "Were you sick?!"
During COVID, if I showed up at the barn wearing a mask, the herd would snort at me and in one remarkable instance tried actively to separate me from my horse, as they understood the concept of quarantine and to them, I was Contagion! 😂🎉 They also learned the word "Covid", likened it to the word "coughing", especially i suppose because prople who had it coughed a lot, and would intersperse their snorts with coughs. I'm not making this up!
A short, sharp snort means "death". It can also mean "predator," as when my horse heard coyotes howling and made the sound. He has also extended that definition to all carnivores, as in dogs and cats particularly.
My horse had a name for my late mother, a long, moderate snort that seemed to mean, "the old, sick one." Thing is, she didn't look that old nor seem that sick when she would visit him and feed him carrots. When she died, he comforted me by giving this very long, soft, low snort as if to say, "she was sick for a long time."

They make that blow sound with their head up high, and eyes wide open staring in a certain direction, whenever they feel concerned about something in their surrounding area. Then if still concerned they will start trotting around. If with others, they all could begin doing the same looking around and following the concerned horse.

@Cease_Thy_Yappery yes, adult female horses are called mares. Adult male horses are either stallions or else geldings if they have been neutered. A lot of people aren't familiar with horse terminology so I think that's why I used that double description for mares. A good channel for learning about the daily life of horses is Friesian Horses.

Nickering is a friendly greeting to a favored human too.
Some horses grind their teeth when they work.
Some horses enjoy pranking non-horse people . If you stand directly in front of them they know you are an amateur because they can’t see you properly and horse people know this. So a horse may blow his nose on the front of you. That isn’t an accident. It’s horse humor and instruction.
Neighing at feeding time means that one or more horses have seen a feeder going to get the hay. Continued neighing means “hurry up! You’re late!”😂

    This is awesome!
So glad you included the "squeal".
Many, many years ago, I kept my horse at a large boarding stable. Even tho' all the male horses were gelded they kept the mares and geldings in large separate fields.
My gelding was a beautiful Anglo Arab with an attitude. I heard him squeal like that several times out in the field. Yes, geldings often forget they're not entire any more and they still fight for position in the field hierarchy.
Watching the male horses spar like that brought back memories. One of the other horses left a big bite mark on his haunches once. Embarrassing in the show ring.

I know very little about riding. Can you share what the rider was doing inappropriately or harmful?

    • @randomvielleuse527
      @randomvielleuse527 2 місяці тому +2

Thank you for your comments and questions!
The rider I’m referring to has an extremely heavy hand on the reins, practically forcing the horse’s head past the vertical. This is makes it hard for the horse to breathe and is acutely painful physically and mentally. Done long enough the tongue can turn blue from lack of blood flow and damage the vertebrae at the top of the neck.
The rider is also heavy in the rest of his body. He’s using plain force to crush the horse into the shape and movement he desires. This is exhausting for the horse, and mentally and emotionally abusive.
I would guess this horse is pretty “hot” (high spirited and sensitive) so perhaps a bit tricky to handle and ride. The solution to this is not harsh bits or hard hands but gentleness, patience and lots of groundwork.
Good trainers here on UA-cam for examples of how to handle and ride sensitive horses would be Warwick Schiller, Elisa Wallace and The Clever Cowgirl. There are lots of other good trainers of all disciplines out there once you start down that rabbit hole!

I’ll never forget my friends family owned a racing thoroughbred and had him at the track and stables at a fairgrounds for training. One day we got to watch him run on the track. The sound of his breathing was so loud you could hear it up in the bleachers. At a race day event there’s so much noise from the crowd you can’t hear it. Also what is the sound they make when they are scared of something? It’s like a vibratory low pitch sound not sure what it’s called.

    • @ameliacorin7383
      @ameliacorin7383 3 місяці тому +22

Yes, noticed that, the rider is holding the reins so tightly that the horse's neck is taking strain. Also strange sweat/lather around his harness or martingale that may be possibly due to harmful medication. That rider seriously needs to be educated about good horsemanship & rein techniques. The dressage technique of rollkur is barbaric and now banned and so should LDR. :(

@ameliacorin7383 This is NOT dressage, this is forcibly holding the neck and head in an extreme upright position. The horse has no proper forward motion and energy, and no muscle build-up in his neck, poll and back to align and create the beautiful relaxation and cooperation of the correctly taught dressage horse. Please compare this horse's exceptional tension and fear, and his clear pain, to any high level, properly schooled dressage horse. Search for "2nd level dressage test" and you'll see the medium stages between basic beginner (Training Level) and the highest (Grand Prix and Prix St. George). It's worth it to see the difference between the long, gentle, cooperative approach and the shortcuts of the pure money-making approach.

Very nicely presented. But as an older cowgirl, I was wanting to hear more stated on here about the sounds i.e.groans/pantings they can make when in pain/colic. There are several types along with the overall listless look they present. Since this is a teaching video, it would have been nice to put in the different types of body language that a horse gives to denote being in pain. So many new and or clueless owners have no idea what to be aware of that their horse is having an issue, until their horse is on the ground (and it's possibly too late).

@@wildlinkonline I just saw your response. I'll put it on my list of things to do when I sit down at night at the computer with a snack and hot tea to rest and google lol. I'll have to munch on it awhile and work on it. You could make a follow up video (Part 2) to link to this one telling the people to view it next. Me being a retired nurse, my first patients were my dogs and my horses from age 12 till I went to nursing school at age 22. I learned a lot from farm animals and how to observe body language and the sounds they made expressing what they were feeling. Its very similar to pediatrics/infants-toddlerhood. They can't speak so observation and assessment of sickness symptoms is critical. For horses, short grunts and panting are part of pain. Observations of pain are bound-up body language, look of lethargy in face, mouth & eyes and first appearance of sweating show up in certain areas. Best to catch things sooner than later. Observing signs of infection is another area easily missed by owners. That's not really a sound made but still a critical observation skill to know. Learn how to take a horse's vital signs, it is not difficult. Physical Assessments: Any bowel sounds? Know your normals for resp and heart rate. Because telling all this to a vet when they show up (typically several hours later these days), will assist the vet to know if your horse is getting worse or staying the same and/or how fast they are decompensating)

Christine, The Black Stallion series was wonder for a girl in the 1950s and 60s! Humans tend to call equine noises by rather "iffy" terms. Did you really hear a difference between whinnying and neighing here? The neigh is a brief sound. As for a young Walter Farley, he was obviously familiar with a horse who had a nasal "alert or warning" sound. Horse noises are varied as people's verbalizing. Listen to actress Fran Drescher talk, and compare that braying to a quiet, breathy woman like Jaqueline Kennedy. I knew exactly what The Black Stallion sounded like because I was exposed to lots of horses, including rather dangerous stud horses. This was a fun video, wasn't it?

Horses can be dramatic at times 😂 as you say, it's often seen when horses meet each other for the first time. Sometimes it's a dominance display between stallions, or simply a moment of temperamental behavior. Other times, it can be playful. Great question, thanks Mizz Witty!
