Rescued Male Calves Suckle on Each Other - The Impact of Early Separation from Mothers
In this video, we observe a fascinating yet little-known behavior in orphaned dairy calves-redirected suckling. These calves were rescued on their way from a dairy farm to a slaughterhouse and are now in a safe environment. However, due to early separation from their mothers and limited natural nursing opportunities, they display redirected suckling, a common behavior where calves attempt to satisfy their natural instinct by suckling on objects, body parts, or even other calves.
🔎 Why Does This Happen?
Dairy calves are often separated from their mothers at birth.
Bottle-fed or bucket-fed calves miss out on natural suckling, which can lead to stress and oral fixation behaviors.
Calves may suck on ears, navels, or even testicles as a form of comfort.
This behavior can be reduced with proper enrichment, fiber-rich diets, and access to appropriate suckling alternatives.

Momma said “BOI CUT THAT MESS OUT BEFORE I WERE YOU OUT!😂
I can hear that accent in my head 😂
awesome!
Thank you, Missi! This was an amazing sight.
Cats in cat age tho are older . 1 year makes cats several years old. So to compare a cat vs kitten to babies kind of not right. BUT in all they can learn equivalent to a baby or toddler. Yet dogs can actually learn small child amount of speech.
I dont have cats but people are learning how much animals can know and learn. Gorillas learn sign language, elephants paint, dogs learn words and speech literally via talk buttons. Probably so much we dont know.
My mother owned an Arabian horse, he was chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail, he was stunning, and spirited as well.
Thanks for watching, Karie! They are some of the most beautiful horses. You're lucky to have grown up around them!
3:25 😂😂😂
We were laughing the whole time while making this video 😂
foxes, wild tho they are, sooo cute!
I bet they make the most adorable pets 😍
wow! great video!! new subber here!
Thanks so much for the sub, Missi!!
Horses can DREAM?! SINCE WHEN??
It is such an amazing phenomenon!
wow!
Thanks for watching, Missi! Love your content.
great video!
Cool 😎
Regarding snorts: a short sort of soft snort is the equivalent of a sneeze. For this reason, horses use snorts to communicate. A strong, moderate length snort means the horse is ill or in pain. When my horse does this, he usually then points to what ails him - a hoof with an abscess, for example. They may also use this call to comment on illness in others. If i am not present at the barn for an extended period, when i show up again my guy gives the illness snort as if to say, "Were you sick?!" During COVID, if I showed up at the barn wearing a mask, the herd would snort at me and in one remarkable instance tried actively to separate me from my horse, as they understood the concept of quarantine and to them, I was Contagion! 😂🎉 They also learned the word "Covid", likened it to the word "coughing", especially i suppose because prople who had it coughed a lot, and would intersperse their snorts with coughs. I'm not making this up! A short, sharp snort means "death". It can also mean "predator," as when my horse heard coyotes howling and made the sound. He has also extended that definition to all carnivores, as in dogs and cats particularly. My horse had a name for my late mother, a long, moderate snort that seemed to mean, "the old, sick one." Thing is, she didn't look that old nor seem that sick when she would visit him and feed him carrots. When she died, he comforted me by giving this very long, soft, low snort as if to say, "she was sick for a long time."
Thank you for sharing, that was so interesting and really cute too, they are so clever. Sorry for your mother too.
It's situations like these that I'm glad UA-cam recommends videos with little to no views. Sure, you'll have to sift thought some sand, but inside there is a gold nugget
Hi Mr. Boomguy. Thanks for the kind comment! Very glad you found the video interesting.
Nice thanks
Thanks for watching, June!
Nickers are my favorite horse 🐎 sounds ❤
Same here! Such an adorable sound. Thanks for watching, Lola!

1:40 high pitched neighs is a call to the head where are you I can not see you. Or welcome back
0:34 stallion nicking at a mare would not be that quite. It starts out that’s way but their body language is very different muscles are tense. Neck is arched and they squeel
0:15 a soft nicker is a greeting.
5:57 that is the stomach turning not pain they are hungry.
4:10 that horse is dreaming and nicking in it’s sleep
I have for many years wanted to learn all I could about horses and this website is really very helpful! I want to know so much more - like learning the names of the anatomy, the gross anatomy, of horses; the different ways they have of moving and what they are called; their temperaments; etc etc. I wish I could do like my 13 year old granddaughter and learn how to properly ride and all about the tack that is used for different purposes. I guess I just need to keep on studying from the computer. Thank you so much for this video and any others you put out.
Thanks for the lovely message, Sharon! Horses are incredible creatures and I'm so glad this video is part of your journey. Best of luck to you and your granddaughter!
Thank you for your reply!
I love kitties x
😂 the snoring got me 🤣❤
It's adorable 😂 thanks, Victoria!
@wildlinkonline IKR 😂❤
Yes they r very smart❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Cats are way smarter than people think!
The horse uses his ears to sense a reason for running, how do they adjust their instincts for fight or flight response? Perhaps he asked,"Why am I running?" I think it would be interesting to add music 🎶, and not just have people standing around looking at him.
Thanks for the suggestion, Mitchell! It's very helpful to hear what you prefer. Thanks for watching.
When your horse sounds like a dragon time to stop filming.
Ich mag die Geräusche der Pferde, ihren Geruch einfach alles!!!!!
A bit of horse sniffing goes a long way 😂
Well are those cats 1 month old?, yeah didn’t think so, are they 1 month in human years, or one month in cat years
Great question - it seems they were adult cats of all ages tested against 8-14 month old human children. Thanks for the comment!
I never knew heards were led by a dominant mare - I now love horses even more.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes, horses have fascinating and unique social structures. Have a wild day!
Yeah at the farm where I boarded my gelding for more than a decade, for years the alpha female elected by the herd was this massive, gorgeous female Percheron who was very docile and didn't want the job. So the barn owner's dominant gelding took over and even had a little police force of about five other horses that would make sure the herd was all settled into its place for the night, who evaluated and would accost intruders-- myself included at times. Fortunately, we'd made friends!😂🎉
Thanks, esp for SNORE, it's very funny.
Thanks, Pamela! It was great fun making this video, and we're so glad you enjoyed watching it.
So that's fox sounds 😊❤ also their barking sound is scary, just imagine that sound in the middle of night 😢
Thanks for watching, Liliana! Fox sounds are super creepy. Definitely not a nice thing to hear on a midnight stroll 😂
6:02 🤣🤣
@@Levo_D_Angelo this video was so much fun to make 😂
great content
Thanks so much for the lovely comment, @Levo_D_Angelo . Really glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you. I've learned a lot. Can you tell me, what does it mean when you have the horse covered. I've always wondered. Is it for security or for cooling or heating? That thing that resembles like a shawl.
Hi Goodmeasure! Thanks for watching. It's usually used to keep horses warm or dry during cold/rainy weather, but thinner ones are used during the summer months to keep flies off the horses, and to keep their coats from being bleached in the sun. Thanks for the comment - really glad you enjoyed the video.
Well I know the scream part and as well as when a horse blows with it’s nose because some time ago I got to see a horse up close. And it started to blow on my shirt and I thought that it wanted to bite the hell outa me but it turned out that it wanted to know who I was😂 which was neat😀
That's so cool! It sounds like a friendly greeting - it's always really memorable to have those kinds of experiences with horses. Thanks Oscar.
Animals are becoming more like us, as we choose those that are. This will hurt them though, if it is combined with cruel breeding or treatment!
Thanks for watching, Lucy. Totally agree - we have a responsibility to our animals. Your comment is much appreciated 😁
Thanks for sharing @wildlink!
Thank you so much for watching!
I'm pretty sure I've never gotten a cat to look at anything but my finger whenever I've pointed at anything I wanted the cat to look at.
Yep...love them, have 3, but I agree with you on the finger thing..😅
I've seen it once or twice, but it could just be coincidence 😂
Same as dogs. Ignorant breeders are the culprits for genetic diseases.
Wow ! Those black and white horses are stunning !
So beautiful!
I am ❤impressed at how smart horses are
They really are intelligent creatures!
Does the snoring indicate polyps or sleep apnea ?
I knew they must use different sounds for different things ! Do they have a good sense of smell ?
Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, they have an incredible sense of smell - it's one of their most important senses for assessing the world around them. Have a great day!
You can't ride papers! Only negative is that you don't always know their age .....
So true! It's the horse that counts. Thanks for watching!
Easy to find out until about ten, then good estimate when aged.
7:55 It’s definitely an exasperated horse here >:/ “Let the -- outta here!” “Where the hell are you?” Or “Damn! I AM HUNGRY!” Well they were filming him, and were right there, so they must have taken care of whatever he was mad at :) 🐴🌾🌷🌱 Thank you so much. All sounds I’ve heard, but never saw them all together with translating. Have a great day. :) ☀️🌷🌱
Hey FeralBlue, thanks for the wonderful comment! It was so much fun making this video. I'm glad you find the interactions as expressive and delightful as we do. Have a great day too!
