I gotta say, I love the Lagavulin 16, but Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength is my current "Islay of Choice". It's not as friendly (relatively speaking) as the Lagavulin, but if you don't really taste proof anymore, it's fantastic. And at my usual store, it's about $30-$40 USD cheaper.
Joe eventually got his head around Islay whisky. He quite often has a Laphroaig on the table. I really don't understand his hard on for Buffalo Trace though. Unless they send him some premium, nicely aged stuff. He's done a collaboration with them so I expect they do. Seen Macallan 18 on his table alot as well. Wild Turkey is no where close to Blanton's. Wild Turkey's flavor is no-nonsense oak. Blanton's (and Early Times BiB) has rich blend of caramel, apple, pear, and spice.
Great video Phil really enjoyed it. You touched on why Islay creates a certain style of whisky, then why not explain about all the different regions of Scotland and how they all create different styles and tastes. Go from the Lowlands to the Highlands,The Inner Isles to Shetland and Orkney.

Totally agree with the point to have a few bottles at home which are whisk(e)y for non-whisky folks. But what are those? I guess usual suspects like Glenlivet 12 will do but what would be some more obscure choices for approachable, easy drinkers (Scotch, Irish or Bourbon). Because you know, its nice to impress a guest, and not to offer the grocery store shelves.
The E150 in Dalmore is annoying, but, you can't knock the whisky. Bottle of King Alexander iii is just excellent in my books. Perhaps a cigar Malt if you're pairing.
Reason one why I trust your opinion, “Blantons is overrated”. Reason two, WT101 was your substitute, my go to bourbon, great flavor for sipping and holds up in cocktails. Reason three, your reaction to the last guy. Priceless. Dudes a schmo. 😆
I think you'd find The Whisky Hunter (aka Chris Gormley) interesting to watch; he has turned me on to a few whiskies that I find to be good value for money and I can usually find them in Canada. Our selections in Canada can be pretty limited in terms of Scotch other than the big labels, but there are lots of whiskies from many places available - how does one find the time to explore them all? 🤣
I get the blantons overrated thing but to compare it to wild turkey 101 is crazy 😂😂😂 I could see a substitute with wild turkey rare breed. Otherwise great video
Thanks Evan! Good call. I was meant to say value for money. You're right, Rare Breed is a much better alternative. For reference - Blantons here is $220 NZD, Wild Turkey is $60 and Rare Breed is $90. The value for money for Blantons is what makes it super overrated.

It's kind of funny how people keep spreading all that misinformation, trying to look important, impress, or whatever, instead of actually educating themselves first. I have no idea who any of those tubers are apart from Rogan but like you said, drink cause you like it. Buy cause you want to explore. The age difference of my youngest and oldest whisky is 40 years and from super smoky to non smoky, bourbon, irish, scottish, japanese, australian, finnish, sherried, calvados barrel, cognac barrel, redwine barrel, abv 40-66%.... I love whiskies of all kinds. Great to explore and learn instead of being snobbish about it. There is a whisky for every occasion, and whisky is great for cooking as well! I've had whiskies distilled in 1950s and onwards, up to 50 years old, whiskies worth 5 digits. It almost never is worth the price when you exceed ~500€. Yes, it might be exceptional but definitely diminishing returns. My favorite very expensive (I think very expensive) are the older Highland Park 25 year olds. Extraordinary sherry & smoke combinations.
I’d like to pick up a Blanton’s just to have the content on my channel, but I’m getting tired of middle-shelf whiskies going for bank on secondary and driving the prices up at retail. I bought a bottle and regret doing so because I didn't enjoy it, but if you're into it and you're in NZ count yourself lucky.
I am going to say it... I am a Whisky Geek who likes Dalmore 😂 It 100% is in the same category with Blue Label with marketing it to the big spenders which is why it appears so much. Brilliant run down fella. Cheers.
I get the peaty stuff , not a fan , but it is solid one in a while . More of the Sherry type for me , but guys like you make me explore , great job Phil !
On Dalmore…I cannot stand the taste. In fact every single colored whiskey that isn’t heavily Peated/Lightly colored I can blind taste and know if it’s been colored. I don’t know if I’m just super susceptible to that flavor but cannot stand that flavor I find it overpowers all. I even shelled out for the Cigar Malt and still couldn’t stand it. I keep trying Dalmore but keep being disappointed so I really just hope to find an independent bottle one day.
Adding colour to whiskey is like a wonderbra. It looks amazing and draws you in, but it’s very disappointing when you take it off to see what’s actually inside.
Nothing to really disagree with on anything you said except about blantons. They both have rich flavors, but blantons has almost no burn and the 101 has subsequently more burn. Now what the second market has done to the price of blantons is BS but at msrp I would take 1 blantons over 2 wild turkeys...... problem is its easier to find an elf then blantons.

Not my cup of tea for whiskey that costs in the nearly 100 dollars a bottle and over crowd. I'm guessing that people will only tolerate buying good tasting whiskey in the 40 to 80 dollar range that's at least 100 proof, because anything lower has a problem retaining taste because the alcohol is the portion of the liquid that holding the majority of the taste profile of the whiskey. I don't like that the industry is trying to constantly promote products in the 60 to 90 proof range, because two things become apparent that's against the consumer. When low proof whiskey gets sold, it more likely becomes tainted with additional flavorings that reduce the utility of the liquid and often limits duration of consumption time before the product goes bad. The other more obvious problem with low proof whiskey is that it is so diluted that it becomes bland and feels like just some form of flavored vodka. Thanks for the video. It shows that the more noted people that we see are not that enthusiastic about whiskey, but they do tend to look for the pricier and more exclusive products just because those items are harder to find and not because these people actually prefer them over other options.
Not being negative!!! But we’re judging their collections and the first bottle is mislabeled! Jd could qualify as a bourbon but they are distinctly Tennessee whiskey! There’s an extra step they take and they are classified as something different than bourbon
I have always thought Blantons is overrated and you are paying more for the bottle than the spirit. I would rather have a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel, Willett Pot Still Reserve (Also has a great bottle but a better spirit), any bottle of Michters or Kentucky Vintage Small Batch.
Nice one Phil..i drink whisky so i must be a gentleman😀idea for a video..best bourbons for a scotch drinker..could be a list video. I struggle to find a bourbon i like..find them to sweet..

Unless you're like me and are a true "bottom shelf" kinda guy; the money they dare to charge for a lot of whiskey - They should hand deliver your whiskey, home, drawn by snow white stallions. Delivery guys should be dressed in Tuxedos, they should open your whiskey for you and drink it for you. They should provide you with a photo album of the event, complete with involved description of how the whiskey tasted.
What a great idea for a video! Genius Phil! Tater influncers 😂🤣😆. Love the guy with tattoo sleve arms rolling the bottle of Blantons over in his hands although all of them are cringe worthy. These people who have a gazillion followers are doing an important service. Keeping the majority of the public away from the good bottles we want. Cheers
If we're gonna poo-poo adding caramel coloring to whiskies, then you should be shitting on Lagavulin as well. The Dalmore Cigar Malt is pretty rad, especially when paired with a cigar, but yeah, the price is pretty stupid.
I could only imagine how bad the Yamazaki 55 would taste. To whoever bought it can justify it all the want, but it’s not worth $1,000,000+ (USD). I figure it’s mostly a centerpiece, art piece but eh
Wild Turkey 101 is not a replacement for Blanton's. Get Wild Turkey Rare Breed instead. It's still about $15 cheaper and is a way better bourbon. You guys overseas need to step up your bourbon game. Wild Turkey 101 is a good budget bourbon. It's far from representative of what a quality bourbon is.
Good call. It was more a value for money thing. But I agree, Rare breed would probably be a better alternative for price point. For reference - Blantons here is $220 NZD, Wild Turkey is $60 and Rare Breed is $90. The value for money for Blantons is what makes it super overated.
I´m from Europe and good bourbon is rare to find. USA has such great market for bourbon you guy don´t need to sell it here and bourbon is very rare and very expensive to get apart from the recognizable brands
I’m glad you highlighted Alpha M. The guy is absolutely pathetic. I followed him for years but he’s full of utter crap and is the most click bait on all of you tube!
aberlour a bunadh is one of my most overrated whiskies, the old batches were phenomenal, they were mixtures of very old stock 20+years and younger sherry casks, with really good casks, this mixtures made some very complex and deep whisky. Now its just young seasoned sherry casks in CS, nothing special, id rather go with other sherry bombs that have more charackter
Instead of Blue Label, how about the Green Label or Double Black, OR something from Compass Box. Instead of Lagavulin, Bruichladdich Heavily Peated or the Ledaig 10. Ah Blanton's, ((shrug)). Instead of the Horsey bottle, the pick of WT 101 is spot on. My alt would be Knob Creek 9 year. UUUggghhh, Woodford Double Oaked is such a disappointment. Old Forester 1910 is the better alternative. Abalour is lovely stuff. Other Sherry finished scotch? Glendronach 12. No qualms for the Edradour or the Dalmore. My only objection is turning people on Edradour. Stop telling people about hidden gems! On point about color added to Dalmore and price. Good suggestions. Joe Rogan, pass. Who the hell is this last guy?? Such a Jagoff, setting to ignore. 😆 Surprised you didn't include Pewdiepie. Cheers!

come on mate dalmore is a bad whisky lead the wave of hate!!! Patterson is no blender, he went through sherry cask like a mad man. It's watery, boring and bloody over priced af. Mostly the complaint is about it being over priced, selling chili filtered dog water for 200 is madness. the coloring just makes it even more scummy.
Anyone who uses “smooth” as a description is immediately invalidated in my eyes. Most likely don’t have a mature enough palate to pick out the actual flavors.
I don’t like the word either, which is why in my other videos I prefer the word tame or mellow instead of smooth. But I knew a lot of beginners would watch this one who use the word smooth
Everyone knows the older the ageing , the better it is. I don't know what you are talking about man? All Whiskies are natural colour. The peaty flavour obviously comes from the peat in the water. Dah !!! The saltiness comes from the sea breeze blowing over the barrels. If you have to add water to your whisky then you obviously aren't really a man. All the real experts will admit to you that the Japanese make the best whisky in the world. They make Sherried Whisky by pouring in a few bottles of wine to each barrel. Sherry is wine made from Cherries. .......

Woodford double oak is awesome! Is you read this and you smoke habanos or cigars this bourbon is for you!
Nice one Phil..i drink whisky so i must be a gentleman😀idea for a video..best bourbons for a scotch drinker..could be a list video. I struggle to find a bourbon i like..find them to sweet..
Pete tastes like cough syrup to me with the after taste and it kills me. I love the initial hit but I hate the taste when breathing after.
Really enjoyed this Phil!
I was expecting to see the Whisky Tribe in here and Ralfy
It would take me a loooong time to react to their whisky 😅. Great channels though
@@FirstPhilWhisky hopefully would watch you in the next one to those! BTW! You got me into whisky, thank you! Should you are wondering, not enjoying Grants triple wood and Black and white. Mostly enjoy whisky neat and very occasionally mixed with coke or soda.
Great work Phiil, keep it up 🔥
You would have to do one video a day for a couple of years to get through their whisky collections! Ralfy has got stashes of whisky in 2 different countries!
I meant to say that I am enjoying now Grants haha instead of not
Regarding Joe Rogan: He loves Caol Ila so he definitely doesn't dislike all peat!
Ah interesting! I wonder why he wasn't liking the Lagavulin 16
@@FirstPhilWhisky The particular episode you reviewed is from 2020, whilst the Caol Ila I saw him drinking was a couple of months ago, so I'm guessing his taste evolved as he started drinking more kinds of scotch (he likes Glenmorangie the OG too)
Unless you're like me and are a true "bottom shelf" kinda guy; the money they dare to charge for a lot of whiskey - They should hand deliver your whiskey, home, drawn by snow white stallions.
Cool that you did not just ridicule them
😂😂😂 please! Part 2 😂😂😂👌🏽
I would love to if people are keen. I want to react to Pewdiepies whiskies too.
I could only imagine how bad the Yamazaki 55 would taste. To whoever bought it can justify it all the want, but it’s not worth $1,000,000+ (USD). I figure it’s mostly a centerpiece, art piece but eh
blanton's is much better tasting than the wild turkey
double oakd is tasty
Jack Daniel’s isn’t bourbon.
I think dalmore might get a lot of it's popularity as it's the richard paterson one and it get's thrown on the floor.
You gotta look at pewdiepies old whisky review video
Great idea
Single malt coffee 😂
Yeah whops 😂
WT101 is closer in proof to Blanton's. If you started giving people who drink 93 proof --> 117, I think they'd be quite shocked.
I’m glad you highlighted Alpha M. The guy is absolutely pathetic. I followed him for years but he’s full of utter crap and is the most click bait on all of you tube!
Jack Daniels and bourbon bub
aberlour a bunadh is one of my most overrated whiskies, the old batches were phenomenal, they were mixtures of very old stock 20+years and younger sherry casks, with really good casks, this mixtures made some very complex and deep whisky. Now its just young seasoned sherry casks in CS, nothing special, id rather go with other sherry bombs that have more charackter
Have to agree. Tamdhu cask strength and Arran sherry cask, cask strength are my go-to now.
They were still good in 2014. No idea what they taste like now.
Cheers!
The whisky bro cartoon character is so cringe. Run away, ladies. He'll never love you as much as he loves himself.
😆
I would never take advice from a man who wears ear rings...
in b4 all the JD fanboys show up saying its not bourbon : D
Alpha M is all about shallow appearance. That guy is all about looks without brains. He drinks whisky because it made him appear as a gentlemen 😂😂
Enjoyed your video, as nearly always. Thank you. I do wish you would 'calm down a bit'. As an An American I have to struggle just a tad to understand you lot with your funny dialect but when you speak really fast it becomes uncomfortable. That being said, your editing is par excellance. Nobody even comes close. Video worth watching for sure.
11:20 so difficult to watch this guy. Hurts.
Missing out by not talking about Irish. Calling JD bourbon makes you sound like a noob and will get you in a fight in KY
come on mate
dalmore is a bad whisky
lead the wave of hate!!!
Patterson is no blender, he went through sherry cask like a mad man.
It's watery, boring and bloody over priced af.
Mostly the complaint is about it being over priced, selling chili filtered dog water for 200 is madness.
the coloring just makes it even more scummy.
is Jack a bourbon ?
Nah it’s not. My slip up
Anyone who uses “smooth” as a description is immediately invalidated in my eyes. Most likely don’t have a mature enough palate to pick out the actual flavors.
I don’t like the word either, which is why in my other videos I prefer the word tame or mellow instead of smooth. But I knew a lot of beginners would watch this one who use the word smooth
The “gentlemen drink whisky” dude is so obnoxious.
Following a wee guy like ‘alpha’ isn’t a good look
Everyone knows the older the ageing , the better it is.
I don't know what you are talking about man? All Whiskies are natural colour.
The peaty flavour obviously comes from the peat in the water. Dah !!!
The saltiness comes from the sea breeze blowing over the barrels.
If you have to add water to your whisky then you obviously aren't really a man.
All the real experts will admit to you that the Japanese make the best whisky in the world.
They make Sherried Whisky by pouring in a few bottles of wine to each barrel.
Sherry is wine made from Cherries.
.......
These are just some of the gems I've heard whilst giving whisky presentations.
😂🤣
dalmore 14 is not colored. color or not.... Dalmore is good, fashion aside.
Alpha M is about as generic as they come
