Kengo Kuma interview: V&A Dundee museum is like a "sea cliff" | Architecture | Dezeen

  • In this exclusive video interview, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma reflects on the relationship between his V&A Dundee museum building and the sea.
Part of a £1 billion renovation scheme for Dundee's waterfront, the dark, ridged concrete form of the V&A Dundee looms out over the Firth of Tay like a craggy rock face.
"The location for this project is very unique, between water and land," Kuma says in the movie, which Dezeen filmed in Dundee.
"We tried to show the uniqueness of this location by designing a sea cliff, between the water and the land, which is the result of a conversation between nature and artefact."
Creating a man-made form that could echo the wind-swept process of erosion from crashing waves required a new level of technology and engineering.
Kuma worked with engineers from Arup to produce a 3D model that could be used to test and analyse various forms for the building.
"We tried to achieve that natural, organic quality by designing this unique facade and the unique shape," Kuma explains. "New technologies can make the organic form possible."

I love the building! I go past it everyday to get to uni and it's so inviting physically because of the shelter it provides. I'm also very interested to see how it will age as the concrete grows old or if it even will age.

If best view is from the water then few people will be able to appreciate that. Pity that a new Office Block being built will obstruct view from parts of the Town centre.

yes totally agree. It does not fit within the built space of the V&A and the train station

Exterior is stunning and achieved is goal of connecting land with water...the interior unfortunately falls short.

Have you been inside? I've heard nothing but praise for the interior and its collections.

Kenny Ritchie no just my impression based on this video...it doesn't quite match the "wow" factor of the exterior. also not really a big fan of the over sized wood shingle look. seems odd to repeat the cladding vernacular of the exterior by replacing it with wood on the interior. would love to visit someday and get a more accurate experience.

@Marcus Calm down. its an opinion but I wouldn't value your opinion very highly if you wouldn't just step in a building for a million pounds.

Good way to attract seagulls, being cliff birds. We need it in this toon but I'm worried a out rising sea levels !!! A completely ignored factor in today's architecture.

There’s very little space for objects in comparison to other Scottish museums like national museum or kelvingrove. 75% of space is gift store cafe and restaurant with almost zero objects of design. As for main collection. If you are Scottish you’ve seen these kind objects before in our other museum. A few machintosh themed things but less then kelvingrove. A few pieces of medieval work but not full rooms like the national gallery.

Waste of tax payer money. You can’t feed homelessness or reduce drug addiction with culture.

But it can draw people to the city which will increase revenue. We visited Dundee in August and was very impressed. We and our friends will be back in February basing ourselves in Dundee for the Scotland Ireland rugby in Edinburgh.
You should really expand your horizons.

What an ignorant comment. The V&A will lead to further investment in Dundee, growth, and jobs. You know, all the things that help lift people out of poverty.

    • @paulbrown4850

Does every major city in the world not suffer from drug addiction and homelessness?

    • @Kthomasritchie
      @Kthomasritchie 5 років тому +2

@Marcus Firstly, I never said it would lift Dundee out of poverty, I said it would help to lift people out of poverty.
Secondly, I totally agree with you that Dundee needs industry. But how do you attract industry to a city, without making it more desirable? Why would businesses choose to shift their productions to Dundee? There needs to be a selling point, some kind of catalyst. The city needs investment in its infrastructure, isn't that what's currently happening?
Thirdly, I lot of your arguments are historical. The 3 J's, Thatcherism, etc. Dundee needs to move on. Dundee is the only UK UNESCO City of Design. It needs to build on its talent within the creative and technological industries, and attract more entrepreneurs to come and setup business there.
Fourthly, find your statement peppered with nationalist undertones, and borderline offensive. We live in a globalised world, Dundee is not some fictional Brigadoon. The commission of the building was awarded to the architectural firm with the best design. The competition was open to any Scottish firm.
Fifthly, The V&A is a partnership. What's negative about being the only city in the UK outside of London to have its own V&A? Most people would find that as some kind of honour, a selling point, something positive.
