The first ammo shortage in the civilian market I remember was during Desert Storm 1991. Smart folks never forgot.
What needs to happen is all the ammo bought up by federal agencies like HLS, IRS, etc. needs to be taken and sold to civilians as surplus.
It needs to be taken, and given back to civilians as reimbursement.
I wonder if Trump will demand this to happen? What does the USPS and IRS and USDA need millions of bullets?

As a practical matter, they should rotate their stocks regularly. And surplusing it to the civilian market would be a great way to get rid of it. But they aren't likely to turn a single round lose.
Every State needs their own ammo/weapon manufacturing centers for in state resident citizens only, not for export.

Would love to see prices on reloading components come down to pre-pandemic levels, especially, primers. Those little bastards are still priced like gold.
Well, my IRA jumped $800 the day after Trump was elected. Can't wait to see what it does for ammo prices!
Gasoline prices dropped significantly also, I fueled up the rig the other day and it was down to $2.99 a gallon as compared to around $3.58 just before.
Prices go up. They don’t come down. There will always be a reason for prices to go up and an excuse why they don’t come down.

Fun Fact: I was 13B (cannon crew member) when I first went into the Army back in the day. I started off on 155mm howitzer cannon which took a 44caliber brass blank type looking rounds as the primer that ignited the powder behind the shell. Wild to think that a handgun caliber can fire off such a large artillery round. I am not certain the exact caliber/size of the round but it looked like a 44magnum size obviously without the round. There are different types used for different sizes of cannon round so if anyone has more knowledge please chime in. Just thought this was a fun fact to share since we are talking about ammo.

Been prepped at least with ammo since the days of Slick. Still buying no matter the cost and rotating old stock out is the plan. Stock pile range brass because it is a commodity that has value! Best of luck to all!
I agree that civilian ammo prices should start to come down for the reasons you mentioned. However, remember the US military will be ordering/producing tons of artillary and tank rounds to replenish what was sent to Ukraine. This will take months/years and put a demand (read price) pressure on gun powder (base material).

On November 9th, prices on my favorite sites dropped about 5%. Apparently demand has suddenly dropped.
Most of the heavy artillery shells we are giving to Ukraine are from old stocks that required replacing. It's actually cheaper to ship it to them than to destroy it. Therefore, I don't see how cancelling shipments will affect the current production status.

One big problem in ammo production is that virtually everything uses nitrocellulose based powder. Domestic production of this component is almost nonexistent. We were importing almost all of it from China. China shut off all sales to the US as a component of their support for Russia. I realize we have domestic production facilities being set up but that takes time.
I see this as an effort by China to weaken us by making us burn through stockpiles without sufficient production capabilities to support operations. Timing wise I realize that China knows we will find or build alternative sources. Therefore I expect red Ch8na to attack Taiwan shortly. I pray it does not kick off before Trump takes over as he far more likely to prevent war from starting and to handle it if it does.
If we avoid war and sever reliance on China, then prices may normalize but thanks to bidenomics and deficit spending prices will likely remain double prepandemic levels.
PS. Ch8na also controls world supply of Antimony and is using it in similar manner to nitrocellulose. Antimony is alloyed with lead to make our bullets so this strains our ability to make bullets as well as to make powder.
Anyone who let us get low on strategic reserves like this should be put on trial...

Which is why I hand load ammo. I have enough stuff to hold me through the next ammo shortage. For now my reloading stuff is put away. I currently shoot loaded ammo. Now people is the time to buy ammo and reloading supplies. It will not come down in price ever. Buy now.
Stock up when you can. In hard times ammo prices will increase 10 times what you pay now.
I can't wait for Trump to be back in office for ammo prices and everything else to start coming down again, right now my biggest worry is I've got to go in for a biopsy next month to be checked for prostate cancer and I'm praying to God that everything will be okay.

the riflemann 5611: I will lift you up in prayer. I was in the same health situation as you about three years ago and had a biopsy. They found a small amount of cancer in my prostate and placed me on acute surveillance, and did a geonome test, which said I was low risk. However, on my own accord I asked for more screening about a year later, and the cancer had spread within my prostate unexpectedly and was in half the core samples, so I went for the surgery option which was successful for the most part, and now I go in for ultrasensitive PSA testing three times a year. They will zap that remaining rice grain sized tumor in the nerve bundle with radiation if the PSA rises to a certain level, but prognosis is good. My biggest comfort was that I know the Lord will keep me on this earth as long as he has plans to, and I am here for his service. The peace of Christ surpasses all understanding, and guards our hearts and minds. Use this trial to grow closer to Him. Blessings to you. Keep in prayer and be open with your loved ones.

I haven't bought ammo in a while. I make sure to keep it on hand at all times since the Great stupiding of 2020.
Here in Minnesota ammo not moving and prices on hunting rounds are down 10%.
What is 110mm shells? Artillery ammo we send Ukraine is usually 105mm and, mostly, 155mm.

Hoping in time the price of components come back down, $100/1000 primers is ridiculous. I prefer to make my own ammo, and still do, but not saving much money in the last several years.
So who was telling us that manufacturers were running out of storage capacity? They had to start storing it in containers on their property. 🤔

I hope I'm wrong , but the dealer bought the ammo in hight price from factory during COVID , so they are not welling to lose money on it now , price may only go down 10%-15% :(

Pistol primers being sold when found for 70 to 100 for 1000. Cheap fmg bullets 15 buck 100. Powder brass and time. So lets say it cosy you 35 cent for an fmj. Yet 9mm can be gounf for 22cent round. We are being screwed.
I buy ammunition anyway, but i honestly don't think we are gonna have a panic buy with Republican control.
In my area some calibers are still hard to find - .357 magnum and .44 magnum. 20 ga. Plus in NY S we need to pass a background check and the system is slow, even state police officers have been delayed over a day.
Drive to Pennsylvania to buy your ammo, and avoid the B.S.

Ammo is plentiful in most places I look. I shoot benchrest .22 bullseye and sometimes I have to chase SK and Wolf. But it's out there.
Shotgun shells with lead aren't plentiful. 410 sure isn't.
Have not looked for .410 in a long time. Check Mid south shooters supply. I just bought Fiochi 12ga 00 buck for $12.99 for box of 25.
Fiochi is building a shotgun shell factory and a separate primer factory in Arkansas.
No change in price for 9mm/223/308 or primers based on the last couple of months. It's only been 5 days though.
I started buying guns before I was 18 in the early 80s. I have stockpiled ammo every since. Every gun buyer should do the same. And NEVER keep it all in one place. Dig a hole where your cousin is building their barn, bury a 40 foot shipping container. Make your cousins storm shelter out of one end and ammo storage out of the other. (Cant access one from the other) Build a barn on top of it, works great and a win for everyone. He and I know about the other door, that's it.

The US Army uses 105mm, 120mm and 155mm cannon shells. Not sure about 110mm.

Here in Colorado they passed a proposal to put a 50 percent tax on guns and ammo. So Colo is the new Californistan 2.0
Now you have to buy in a neighboring state and bring it back to Colorado.

I still haven't used any ammunition acquired in 2017. Anything bought since then won't be pew-pewed for a while so even if there was a hiccup in the supply chain I won't lose sleep over it. Let's say if there is, there better not be another stupid dead-on-arrival caliber hogging primers, brass, and bullets. Really, when's the last time anyone here met anyone who chooses to carry .30SC or even _bought_ a gun chambered in it? What a waste of resources.
Looks promising thats for sure, I hope primers, .223 and .556 goes down. unfortunately in Colorado all things 2nd amendment keeps getting worse...They just passed Preposition KK adding an "Excise Tax" to guns, ammo and accessories. I am doing all I can by emailing and calling our representatives etc...I have a feeling they will do another attempt to Ban so called "Assault Weapons'", It came close last year.....

What's a 110mm ammo. We don't use 110mm or send it to Ukraine. What are you talking about. The only 20mm x 110mm is in Navy MK100 serious auto cannon
The munitions we would need to fight China (Sea and Air) are mostly different than what we send to Ukraine to fight a land war. Ground to air defense being the exception.
We rely on too many smart weapons that cannot be ramped up quickly. The artillery we are sending Ukraine we thought we would never need because of our precision wonder weapons. There is a need for military “mass” that we have abandoned since the Cold War. We are ill equipped to ramp up basic production. We are lucky that the Ukraine war uncovered these weaknesses without our troops finding out the hard way.
We have zero TNT plants in the US. (There is only 1 TNT plant in all of NATO! it is in Poland, and our other primary source was Ukraine but that plant is in Russian hands now). We import our gunpowder mostly from China. We get most lithium, nickel and cobalt from China. This is a security failure that spans 30 years of government. We have to spend the money to make that critical stuff here. That’s where to use tariffs. But only AFTER we bring sufficient production online. That will take years IF we invest now. In the meantime we have to stockpile those raw materials big time.
Small arms ammo is the very least of our worries! Our closets alone could supply the US in war for years! 😂
