Okay but Austria having an Only Fans for its nude sculptures might be my favourite news story ever
For Austria I would’ve picked all the corruption in the ÖVP party and how there were 3 different prime ministers between October and December of 2021
@@danielmcallahan But that wouldn't be news we missed so I'm glad they went with the OnlyFans Story
@@Gizfreek yeah you’re right

Local news for me is my small US rural town installed two EV charging stations and a big commercial building that has been sitting vacant for a while has recently been bought by a semiconductor company to renovate the building into a CNC manufacturing building. It's expected to create a lot of jobs and put a lot of needed revenue into the city. Like many other small rural towns, when the mill shut down almost 15 years ago, it changed things economically and socially at a very rapid pace that we are only just recently beginning to heal from.
Nice
Which semiconductor company?
But old people don’t want their “little” town to get big, even though that’s how our economy grows!!
Nice
In my small town, about as many businesses closed as opened, and our town is still in dept because we built a golf course. BUT OUR TOWN HAS A TESLA!!

The strict adherence to the "UN-recognized countries" criteria means for the second year in a row, Taiwan is completely neglected. Even though you've bent them this year to include Hong Kong.
Next year please adjust your criteria, Sam, as Taiwan is surely to appear more in the news this year and more difficult to ignore.
completely agree
The channel has a lot of videos about China, including "Why Chinese manufactory wins" and "Why China is so good at building railways", I guess he doesn't want to be on their bad side
Even the disclaimer before the Hong Kong section is interesting enough. Just imagine if he didn't include that bit, how many wumao would appear from nowhere and destroy the comment section.
Same for Kosovo
If we’re doing territories I’d think Macau, Greenland, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and far more should also be included
You should stop saying "A dutch court ruled" when you are talking about international law. Yes the international court is in the netherlands, but it is misleading to say that it is a dutch court as they are not ruling based on dutch laws.

The reason Switzerland is "late on inclusivity issues" stems simply from the fact that there is a very high threshold to legislative change. For example, giving women the right to vote required a constitutional amendment, and thus a referendum, on which only men could vote. That referendum needed not only the majority nationwide, but the majority in at least half of the cantons (states, Switzerland is a federal country) as well.
That being said, the fact that the same-sex marriage was approved by a majority in every single canton is rather remarkable.
"erratic buoy behaviour" is probably one of my favorite phrases now

As a Pole I can confirm theres coal EVERYWHERE. Trucks with coal, piles of coal in front of houses, coal in the basement and there are literally 2 coal powered powerplants next to the village I live in
and coal in my lungs :D
Coal is also the official currency, we pay for our groceries with pieces of coal. Also when a man wants to show affection for a woman he takes out a piece of coal from his pocket and gifts it to a woman, polish women absolutely adore it and think that coal is the true symbol of love, not diamonds (which are also carbon but worse because you can't use them to make electricity and heat your apartament). We also eat coal as a snack, when we get a bit hungry we just take a bite of a piece of coal just like everyone else would take a bite of an apple. Coal is extremely versatile and everybody loves it. This information is 100% true, there is no reason to ask anyone else to confirm it. They're gonna be offended that you're doubting our national devotion to coal.
I always appreciate this series for keeping me updated on the world. I like to learn about things going on in other places.

I'm not surprised that my country (Bosnia) is mentioned with bad news, but I am shocked how low it is on the HDI list... So many countries that I thought of as "worse off" seem to be not.
Also calling it "country with two names" is wrong. It's one name just woth two parts.
HDI is not a good measure of a country's development, it was never meant to be used in this way. Instead there is a measurer calleld IHDI (inequality adjustted HDI) which gives a more accurate picture of a country's situation..
I don't know why this channell didn't use that..
@@AlohaBiatch Then how is HDI meant to be? And why did Wendover use this again?
Im shocked it wasnt lower tbh
@@comradeofthebalance3147 From Wikipedia: "The IHDI can be interpreted as the level of human development when inequality is accounted for," whereas the Human Development Index itself, from which the IHDI is derived, is "an index of potential human development (or the maximum IHDI that could be achieved if there were no inequality)."

As a Taiwanese not seeing Taiwan, kinda saw that coming but still disappointed. Social credit jokes aside, we should have been recognized years ago if China is not a superpower that chokes most nations' economies.
We have an HDI of about 9.15~9.2 if anyone's curious, and should be well in the top 20~25.
Edit: If Taiwan counts as a province of China, we have the highest HDI among all provinces. Even higher than Beijing and Shanghai, only lower than Hong Kong and Macao.
It's even weirder when Sam bent his own selection criteria so that Hong Kong could be mentioned this year.

He used the UN's list. Complain to them.
The HDI ranks countries based on only 3 factors: life expectancy, years of education, and per capita income. It does not take into account the level of unemployment and inflation or the level of corruption. It also fails to take into account the level of human rights and democracy as well as freedom of the media. In addition, it does not assess the level of crime, i.e. the threat of terrorism and the number of homicides. It also does not evaluate countries in terms of the quality of the environment or running a business, economic innovation or access to the Internet by residents. I make a ranking of the standard of living in the world every two years. In the last of 2020, I included 34 categories according to which I rated 156 countries. I'm just starting to create another one this year. Not only the UN publishes such rankings, in my opinion the Legatum Prosperity Index published every year is much more credible, and the Social Progress Index is also published every year, which is worse, in my opinion it is worse showing the real reality in the standard of living. Returning to the methodology of my ranking, all countries in each category rank from 1st place to 156, except where in some field only 1 country - without ex equo - is in the highest position, it gives it 0 points and the country is in second place normally 2. Then it sums up places taken by each country in all categories and the lower the value of the hype places a given country obtains, the higher (better) it ranks. I do not know yet how many categories will be included in this year's ranking, but when it comes to the number of countries assessed by me, it will probably not change or will change slightly.
Okay... And?
