      I don't think anyone thought Arizona won that trade, Domi was already a really good player, Galchenyuk more of a system guy and quickly backslid, but he still put up a very similar statline in Arizona to what Domi put up this year, plus they got Phil Kessel out of it, who we all know is irreplaceable so long as you can afford enough hot dogs to feed him.

      I feel like the sharks did not get fleeced the sharks need to win now and Karlsson is a player that will help you in the short term and I do not think Quinton byfield or Tim stutzle will compare to a healthy Erik Karlsson. The sharks then got the best trade Goodrow for a first in a deep draft the sharks get a pick that they normally would have gotten in a good year. If Meier Sorensen and suomela develop well it won't look like a bad trade. The Ottawa Senators got lucky too the sharks got very injured this season more of pure luck than a smart trade still though Ottawa got good value.

    While you're right about the Granlund-Fiala trade you could have mentioned that large portion of Granlund's points came under another coach after firing Laviolette. We'll see what happens there.

    • @ghost_615
      @ghost_615 4 роки тому

      100% agree. Honestly, I even think Fiala would have done better under Hynes. The Predators were just discarding players and trying to plug in any piece they could find (Simmonds, Boyle, etc) to try to save Laviolette's legacy. It took them way too long to realize his actual legacy is souring locker rooms and letting a good team slip away. I'm still not convinced Hynes is a long term solution, but there was no excuse for Laviolette having the roster he did and getting that little production.

      Great first year trade for Pionk for sure, but can he keep this up? This is either just a career breakout year or he’ll come back down to earth, my vote is the latter as I still don’t know if he’s capable to being an elite top pairing offensive defensemen. Certainly a top 4, but either way, still a great trade by getting Heinola in this deal. At the same time, not horrible for the rangers as they needed to accelerate the rebuild a bit and Trouba was a good pick for that, and with the emergence of Fox and D’Angelo, they don’t require him to be a high producing defensemen (even though I expect him to bounce back next season) and work on his defensive game

      Neal Pionk was absolutely horrific in his own end with NY. For a short while, he played a strong offensive game, but that dried up after about a half-season.
      One thing of note is that Pionk has an offensize-zone start percentage over 60% this season, while, with NY it was down about 48%. This just goes to show the difference in how Maurice is using Pionk vs. how Vigneault/Quinn used him.
      FWIW, Trouba's offensive-zone start percentage this season was around 40% and he's been paired with below-replacement-level partners in Marc Staal, Libor Hajek and Brendan Smith. Trouba hasn't been good either - certainly well below the $8.5M cap hit - but chances are things will improve for him.
      It also could speak to the poor job that Quinn and Lindy Ruff are doing with NYR defense - Rangers fans have long criticized Ruff who is in charge of the defense.

    I'm a Canucks fan, when we got Miller, I was nervous because it was risky. I thought it would be a pretty even trade although I never knew we even had that goalie. Miller was incredible this year, much better than expected. And the best part is he's a two way player who played on both the powerplay and the penalty kill.

    All the rangers fans coming out of the gate talking about how AWFUL Pionk was are somehow still trying to find a way to call this trade a win. Trouba had good seasons when the jets were one of the deepest teams in the league on the blue line and he had a Vezina contender bailing out his mistakes. He's not a bad defenceman, but he's probably a second pair defenseman at his peak. I'm not sure Pionk is much better than that, ill agree. But given the difference in contract + the addition of a promising defenseman in Heinola, this really doesn't seem that close.

      To be fair Pionk was terrible as a Ranger, but they choose to ignore that he was a young kid forced to be a terrible teams top D-man on an AHL quality defense with an aging goaltender whose best seasons were in the rearview mirror. Pionk wasn't ready to be a #1 on such a bad team and it showed. This year, without the pressure (Morrissey was our clear number 1) Pionk came in, played his game and was a HUGE part in the Jets making the qualifying round, outplaying Morrissey on a nightly basis.

      @@phazerphred5917 dude that's exactly what I've said in Winnipeg for years. Hes not a bad defenseman by any means, but hes not top 2 guy. Morrissey just made him look that way because hes both decent offensively and so bloody underratedly fast he could beat most wingers back, also thinks the game at a high level. Dudes the most underrated defenseman in the league because he sacrifices getting points so he can always fix his d partners mistakes. You are totally right about that Granlund/Fiala trade, but let's not forget that there were locker room problems with Fiala. You could see that at the first 2 games Minnesota und Nashville played against each other after the trade. Johansen and Forsberg both nearly fought Fiala and they have also shouted some words to each other. While Ryan and Filip seemed to laugh about it, Fiala didn't look happy at all.

  • @arkrazor354
    @arkrazor354 4 роки тому

    So much goes into the evaluation of a trade. First, there is an increasingly important issue of cap space. Then, there is the issue of control of the player received. Then there is the issue of "win now" v "build for the future". The trade can be a win-win for both teams. Most people look at "win now", but in reality the other factors need to be looked at. A few observations on the trades- Trouba was going to leave WPG anyway, they had to get something. Where WPG got fleeced was in the Hayes trade, but that was "win now". Weber holds all of the aces on NAS in this deal, which is what makes the deal really work for MTL. If Weber retires earlier, NAS is saddled with virtually all of the cap hit- an impact of perhaps $24mil+! There is also chemistry issues, which evidently played out in the NAS locker room as well. JT Miller's numbers went up b/c he was no longer getting 3rd line minutes in VAN. TBL had an embarrassment of offensive riches. While I hate the Sharks, OTT didn't even fish Hertl or Labanc out of the deal, which is why it was a good trade for SJS- and it was definitely win now mode. SJS got burned b/c they should've known EK65 was going to hold the Sharks up like DD did with the Kings.

      i think Troubas play was influenced alot by all the starpower the jets have upfront and his defensepartner Morrissey. He is an ok 3 or a good 4th defenseman. Neal Pionk turned great this year however i expect him to regress a fair bit next year. The big win here in this trade is heinola

    • @clashman7950
      @clashman7950 4 роки тому +1

      Trouba is a Great d-man. Yes he started slow but that was expected, & got even better the 2nd half. Trouba had to learn a new system, new country, new coaches, new players. People also have to look at what the NY Rangers don't have without Trouba & that's a d-man that plays a physical brand of defense which most of the NY Rangers players lack in that area except for maybe Brendan Lemuix & Ryan Lindgren yes, who is a rookie. But i do think the Rangers trade Trouba before the end of his contract, to a team of his choosing again because of ALL the good young players coming up through the ranks. I think it was a fair trade for both teams because the Rangers really only gave up pionk for trouba & The Rangers already had too many Pionks or players who are better then Pionk already & cheaper.

      @@Thomas_Erickson You seem like a really good fan for supporting your team like that, I might not know the Wild as well as you but I believe they are 1 or 2 years removed from their cup window now, and Nashville still could have a chance this year and next. I agree that Kaprizov coming over will be a big help and if Dumba can step it up you have a solid D but the rest of the line-up will need some work from Guerin this fall in order to be comparable to NSH. Lots of aging players will need replacement soon

    I'll be the first to admit I thought the Habs won in the short-term and the Preds won in the long-term. 4 years later, I can say that the Habs definitely won this one hands down. I'm not sure what happened to Subban but one thing I've noticed this year is that he has gotten SLOWWWW. Could be injury-related but his speed/agility/overall edgework has taken a noticeable decline which seriously impacted his performance as his skating was his strongest asset.
    As for Trouba, time will tell. I think he can bounce back but I sure hope for the Rangers' sake that he does. Top-5 paid defenceman putting up sub-30 points ain't cutting it.

But it looks like falling short is going to do more than just merely tilt the trade in Ottawa’s favor. Ngl Weber-Subbam is a win-win for everyone, Nashville got the end of Subban’s prime and dealt him before he really fell hard. Montreal got the player who still holds up as better today.

And Nashville did go to the cup finals as you said. Montreal has yet to make the playoffs. So I’m kinda in the middle of who won that trade. And I thought Vancouver won the JT Miller trade cause I knew they wanted to make the push. With petterson and boeser. I forgot what I thought of the fiala trade. And yeah I thought the sharks won initally but they choked and then dipped the playoffs so now the sens are like “yay”

    One more thing worth mentioning in regards to the Weber-Subban trade: the recapture penalties. Nashville locked themselves in to $24.6 million of cap advantage when they traded Weber. The longer Weber plays, the more that advantage concentrates and potentially becomes a huge issue (perhaps apocalyptic if it goes on long enough to reach eight figures) if Weber retires early and they have to accept the penalty.
    Montreal won't have this issue - charts published in 2020 show the Habs' cap advantage for Weber is already low enough that they would only be on the hook for the equivalent of a league minimum contract if he retires this off-season (albeit for six years), and the advantage (and penalty) is gone by 2023.
    In short, if Weber retires before summer 2026, this trade becomes much, much worse for the Preds; in fact, I would argue this is already a good example of why you should just ride out one of these contracts. (Hopefully the Wild will get this message with regards to Parise, especially since they'd lock into about $19m of advantage, basically near the max amount possible, if they actually get him traded this off-season)

We wouldve lost trouba soon enough anyway and Pionk was already a flashy great defender in the Rangers and now he's truely blooming with the Jets for fraction of the price tag of trouba, that alone makes it a massive Win for us. But then we also got our pick back and Heinola with that, who was the biggest steal of that draft lol.

    Fiala for Granlund feels like a salary cap trade, cause at that time, Fiala was actually earning much less than Granlund. Both teams are hard presses against the cap, but the crunch hits the Wild harder cause of the awful Suter and Parise contracts. They needed a cheaper alternative, and they felt Fiala was their guy. Granlund feels more like a costly rental for the Preds, given they were going all in while their core is still in their prime.

      If you're implying Ottawa is moving that's not happening. Ottawa has a history of selling out for almost two decades. That and the NHL is not dumb and see the current "issues" in Ottawa right now have close to nothing to do with fans or their love of the team; it's the owner. That and after the Jets fiasco they'd rather not get the bad press of moving a team that's been highly successful and is currently turning a profit despite poor attendance. That and there are ownership groups in Ottawa that will gladly buy the team out of Melnyk's hands. that was not a case in Quebec City when Marcel Aubut sold the Nords in 1995.
      That and before we talk about the possibility of teams folding Ottawa is not even close to that situation if COVID keeps teams from playing. The teams in real risk are Florida, Arizona, Anaheim, Columbus and Winnipeg. The Sens are staying put in Ottawa and this trade will be very good for them and the city.
