My first major was Sociology. I loved the study of social problems and sociology provided me with crucial knowledge of systemic barriers. I focused on Power in everyday life, as well as health and health care systems. These became extremely valuable when working as a community mental health counsellor - case manager. I’m currently studying social work while working full-time. I would not be as good at my job supporting clients through these systems had it not been for my sociology studies.
Here is a list of careers my old Soci classmates/friends got into after uni.
- Teacher
- Lawyer
- English Teacher in Mexico
- Mental Health counsellor
- Researcher in suicidology
- Medical Sociology - researching benefits of support animals for veterans
- Homeless Shelter and Transitional Housing Manager

@@goddestroyer3416great thank you. I’m in my final semester and applying to a Masters program in Social Work. My hope is to do private practice and specializing in therapy for people traumatized my the medical system.
Whatever career you fall in you'll be more confident in communicating and connecting with others with this degree.
LOL yeah, working as a receptionist... Degrees like this should only be view as potential steppingstones to get into a more specific graduate program, but if that's the case, just get that more specific undergraduate degree as well from the start.
@@TB-ni4ur yes, it's a steppingstone undergrad degree, but not always best to "get that more specific undergrad degree as well", especially if it's something related to Sociology such as social work....depends on individual circumstances of course, but sometimes this degree can be a faster track to getting to your master's program of choice. Btw, not trying to be an a**hole but based upon your many comments under this video [all negative] you seem bitter about your degree and career choices ....why not go back to school or find something u like better than the receptionist job that u don't seem to enjoy?

I got my first degree in psychology, I thought I had a passion for it. I learned a little later that I enjoyed the social work aspect of the job. Now I am planning to attend university for my sociology undergraduate degree and then continue on to get my MSW! My journey is just starting and I am excited to finally be finding a path that I will enjoy.
Unfortunately, In Canada, sociology majors cannot pursue masters level work to become teachers (unless they start a new undergraduate degree) . Here, social science high school teachers are required to have courses in either geography or history. This is pretty standard across all provinces with few exceptions.
Currently pursuing a degree in Sociology Anthropology with a minor is Disability Studies

I just submitted an application to my local college, I was really excited about it until the reality of my confusion hit me, I started questioning what possible opportunities are out there for sociology majors and went on a google question&answer rabbit hole. That was until I came back to good ol' faithful UA-cam! Your video clarified a lot and all jobs would be something I'd be interested in pursuing. thank you for giving free knowledge!
Don't do it. You can't do ANYTHING with a degree like this unless you are part of a "preferred group" and expect to get hired in the government based on that fact alone. Degrees like this are the stereo typical do nothing finger painting degrees that land you in debt while working at Starbucks or Best Buy. Not trying to be a jerk, but it's about time people start telling young people the truth.
@@TB-ni4urRight?! Literally none of the job prospects in this video are possible with an undergraduate sociology degree...I am working on this degree because it is my fastest track to grad school (long term goal is MSW for LCSW).
@@TB-ni4urthat’s not true. A lot of community service agencies will hire people with a sociology degree. You can do a masters in Social Work afterwards and be on your way to private practice. I have even seen organizations use sociology graduates to do internal organization research.

@@TB-ni4urtry 66k at a non for profit with a degree in Ontario Canada and well over 100k doing private practice therapy with a Master in Social Work. It’s pretty common.

I pursuing to go back to college and start over. I really played around in my late teens and early 20's when I was in college and didn't take it seriously. I never finished and my grade are very terrible. Now, that I am 35 and planing on going back this fall the major was suggested for me to pursue since I've been working with nun-profit organizations that involves urban areas and performing arts. I'm a dance teacher and I want to pursue something great for the youth, really youth of color and families with low in-come.

I have a Bachelor of Justice (Criminology & Policing), I also have a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) but my passion is crime (not committing it of course lol) ... Where I am there are no Masters degrees in criminology, so I am going to do a Master of Arts (Sociology) with a crim focus...hoping to then extend this to a PhD in Criminology. My ultimate goal is to be a working Criminologist or lecturer of criminology/sociology.
was pursuing a bachelors degree for crimionoly was it easy? I am interested in Criminilogy and sociology, in high school I took intro to crim justice and another crim class which I liked which counted as college classes.
@@breezy6483 so far I have found criminology easier than sociology (terminology) but that may be because I am doing Masters level. But if you enjoy the topic and you like reading on it, and its your passion I would go for it.

@@breezy6483 The way I decided on my Bachelors degree, was considering what I leisurely would like to read about. I am not a huge reader, and the areas of interest I have always had are true crime/human rights. So I decided if I am going to pass anything I would need to be ok with reading the material. That was how I made my decision to study criminology/justice. Hope that helps.

Sociology should teach you how to critically think, write and speak articulately…that’s what the humanities are supposed to be for…if you can do all three of those at a high level, you should be dangerous going up for any complex job…even against a business grad who may tick more boxes in terms of hard skills but doesn’t know how to deal with people…

Horrible choice. LoL There is a program called supportive services for veterans families. They hire non college grads.
If you want to be on the professional side of things get an undergrad in psychology, then iron out a more specific career path and be prepared to get a masters in that field. There are degrees in social work but they are more limiting at the undergraduate level, whereas a psychology leaves a lot more doors open when applying to a graduate program. A BA in sociology will only allow you to get a job as the receptionist. Not trying to belittle that position, but it's the truth and probably not what you have in mind.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, but I’m finding that most of the jobs I want to do also require extra schooling and certification; would graduate school be the better option instead of going back to get a specific certification? I also find that I live in an area that is low in opportunities short of working at my own university, are there options to work remotely until I can afford to move to a better area with more opportunity? Or should I stick it out and try to find employment in my own town?
Yeah, sadly you're finding out what people should have told you before signing up, instead of having recruiters like this guy plaster you with unrealistic optimism and empty promises. There are no jobs for these sort of BA degrees. Either make the plunge go get a more practical graduate degree, or be ready to make a career in sales, retail, or administrative work, ect.

@@stephE80 It can be a great platform to bounce off of, but I think it's important for people to understand they won't get a career making six figures with this BA... So you have to assume you'll need another 2 years of school and the tuition of grad school on top in order to make the money being implied here, plus you have to get good grades knowing you'll need to get into grad school... C's get degrees but schools that accept people with 2.0 gpa's tend to be money black holes... That needs to be known from the start.
@@TB-ni4ur yes that's why I said this is the type of degree for someone who plans on pursuing graduate school...I meant as in that being the plan from the start. Who said anything about earning C's during undergrad? Who tf would do that if they plan on grad school? Omg get a grip. I'm now working on my BA in Sociology with a plan to earn my Master's in Social Work. In my situation getting my bachelor's in Sociology was a faster track as I came from a nursing track and decided SW is a better route for me; after switching last minute, I'm able to get my bachelor's within this year (with full time semesters plus summer school), whereas a SW degree would've taken more classes plus having to apply as it's a more competitive program. And my BSN would've been another 2 years as well [in the program]. This way I'll have my Master's in SW within 3 years as long as all goes well. So yes, a BA in Sociology isn't going to give someone a plan for a 6 figure career, that's silly 🤣 but it can be a good undergrad backbone.

Do an MBA from a top IIM. Please don't get offended by this, but most degrees in social sciences except maybe economics are useless unless you upskill. I'm also studying for a bachelor's degree in sociology in India. The course content in India focuses a lot on theory, which is definitely a no-no in North America.

To pursue a career in this type of field, you do really need to pursue a higher level of education in order to land yourself a more well paying and stable job.
@@cupcakzbacpud9502 that isn’t very convenient, as I need to make use of the Bachelors degree once I get it. I’m really slow in getting school work done. I am 29 and a half, and can only do like one class in the summer and two classes per each Spring and Fall, which is five classes per year. If it’s a math class I have to take, then maybe only one that semester. I think I just have bad Attention Deficit Disorder or something.
After this Summer, I have four classes left before I can get my Associates degree, and I’m planning on getting my Associates next year at either the end of Spring or end of the Summer of next year, and so I won’t be getting my Bachelors until I’m like 34 years old, almost 35. Which means I won’t be getting my Masters until I’m 39. Which means, from now, it will take me ten years to get my Masters degree. Unless I can take two classes in the summer as well, or one in the summer and three per both the Spring and the Fall, each year, I won’t be able to get my Masters any sooner than that. I won’t get my Masters any sooner than when I’m 39, and I won’t be able to begin making lots of money enough to afford a home until then.
It would just make it so much easier for myself if I could make use of a Bachelors degree by the time I’m 34, almost 35.
@@thebosstex1172 Have you considered pursuing a different field entirely? I mean I know within the realm of social sciences, you could potentially get into criminal justice with just a BA in criminology, of course on top of other related work and volunteer experience pertaining to the field of work. Other than that however, most social sciences require at least a masters degree for, like I said before, a higher paying and stable job. Though to be fair you can still probably land yourself a job without a masters, but you wouldn’t exactly be making bank.
Read my BIG 5:
1. Psychological B.S. or B.A. is useless without graduate school. Same thing for sociology and many other courses.
2. Persevering goes a long way. Never give up! Keep holding on.
3. Career counselors know nothing about your future. Going to see them is a waste of time. They will only confuse you more.
4. Make sure that your major lines up with your minor. In other words, do not major in sociology and minor in physical education. No relationship there. Ok? If you decide on sociology, for example, do this instead:
A. Select social work as a minor because both programs are related.
B. You must go beyond the B.A. or B.S. level. Otherwise, your degree is useless. The college knows this fact very well. Students are dollar bills with arms and legs. College is a business. They don't care about you and your future endeavors at all.
5. Again, major in something that is in demand. Honestly, teaching, medical field, computers, math, physics to name a few are always in great demand.

SO SOCIOLOGY IS REALLY A MINOR CAUSE THERE IS NO CAREERS IN BEING A SOCIOLOGIST KIND OF LIKE ANTHROPOLOGY....IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY
Who copyedits your posts before they go up? I find it so disconcerting to see grammatical mistakes & typos that should have been caught along the way by the team of TPR staff & consultants. Please know that I only say this to you as a former communications & conference director of a national, non-profit org. that I worked incredibly hard for for ten years. I know how hard it is to do the heavy-lifting of planning an annual event at all levels across an entire organization and to keep it & everyone in it feeling part of a “whole” that’s going in one direction, let alone the right direction. So making last-minute typos or mistakes in the program or in the event’s press release in the big picture aren’t nearly the big deal they feel they are during the actual event.
