HOW TO BUILD A ROCK PILLAR FENCE

  • Having a practical fence that is also aesthetic is a reasonable enough goal. Many people have commented on the one that I am building, and after a request from "artonmysleeve" from steemit, I thought I might as well show you how I'm making it.
    Since I've got plenty of rocks to use anyway, this is a great way to help solidify the fence and aid in keeping out the wild animals.

    I've been wracking my brains to find a fencing idea appropriate for my situation. This is it! Rock jacks last a century in my climate.

    We have lots of medium small sized rocks & I've been brain-storming how to store them in a functional & a decorative way. Last night I got the thought of putting them in a small pillar (made of chicken feed) to store them, & using the pillar as a base for a bird bath. I did some googling & found this video. The rock pillars in the video are exactly what I was thinking of. I'm very thankful for these videos!

    In '78 i worked in a youth program initiated (in 1977) by Jimmy Carter (he also setup a tax break / credit for employers in the program) & worked at Lake Meredith in the Tx panhadle. For a month or so we climbed the sides of hills there bringing down rocks that we then built pillars like these.. tho without the wire.. using 6" -ish round lumber to connect them. That fence lasted a few decades. It was a very fun summer doing that and other lake doings.
    Watching the vid's of this and your current front gate project now has been quite enjoyable. Both in seeing your progress and in the memories brought back by yall's group effort. Have a great weekend Papa.

    I built wire gabions for hillside garden terraces, and I sure wish I’d put felt roofing or something down first to block the weeds. It’s impossible to get out the grass and oregano that have invaded the rocks and wire. I like your fence!

    Excellent. Viewed 2022. I like the looks, the ease and the low cost it represents. Looks like the column would be quite stable but I would use a taller T post and pound it deeper. Overall, grade is an A.

    Fill a few of those with adding dirt and tuck a few flowers or herbs or cactus in the cavities and you have a instant planter ;-)

      An issue that might come about is that soil adds acidity, which in the long run might cause corrosion.

    Love this idea! We've been trying fences on our backyard to break up high winds, but the soil is so shallow we can't dig in pillars for stability and everything we make gets blown to bits by the wind. This seems like a much sturdier build and we will by trialing something similar this spring.

    I’ve been a Mason for over 45 years I’ve laid lot of stones the only problem you have there is that wire eventually it’s going to disintegrate and you’re going to have a pile of rocks on the ground haste makes waste my friend you gotta put it up with Cement sorry.

    • @PapaPepper
      @PapaPepper  22 дні тому

      @@donmilo4733 except wire is cheaper than mortar, and once it begins to get older and rusty, I can put another layer of wire on it. Way faster than mortar, although..... i do like using mortar where it makes sense for me, have done a few projects, and plan to do more

    Fence looks great. Thanks for posting. I only have about 8" of dirt so it makes it impossible to put any type of post into the ground. Do you think this idea would work even though I can't put T posts very deep? Thank in advance for the answer.

    Hi. My first time here.
    I woke up this morning and chose to do a big project.
    Question: ❓
    Do I have to use a t-post in the middle?
    Does it require that for stabilization?
    Hope you answer cause I am taking the fence down today.

    • @PapaPepper
      @PapaPepper  8 місяців тому

      If the gabion is this skinny, yes. But, if you make a wider gabion, it should be self-stable.

    Is there any plans to make the columns more solid? like maybe some concrete or mortar or something to hold it together so if the wire mesh fails the whole thing doesn't fall apart?

    • @PapaPepper
      @PapaPepper  5 років тому +3

      Nope. No plans to make it more solid. Until these rust through, I don't foresee an issue.
