Brought a tear to my eye… yet another in a sea of tears. And hey, I even a slight shout out at the end. And yes, he was just warming up. We talked like this for years upon years. One lucky son.
My family had the pleasure of hosting Ryan and his daughter at a location party back in the late 70s. A charming fellow. I ran into him years later and he remembered the event and was just as charming. A very deft comedian; his performance in "What's Up Doc" has always been under-appreciated.
Ditto... until I saw this , back then, I had no idea how witty and intelligent he was.. don't think I ever saw him on the talk show circuit back in his heyday, so it was a pleasant surprise to share his company this way..
So broken by the news of his death, Always one of my favourite actors from back in the 70's. What a charming man and talented too. We your fans will miss you terribly. Rest in peace darling Ryan O'Neil..
Really hard to believe. I will always remember Ryan as the young actor in Love Story. He just never aged in my mind. Excellent celebration of Ryan O'Neal's career/life Rob. RIP Ryan ✝🙏✝
My sister was a great admirer of Ryan. She wrote a letter to him. People responsible to answer letters of his fans sent my sister his pictures with autogramme and dedication. God was she happy! Now she is 65 and keeps his pictures on the wall of a living room, nicely framed. She is so proud of them.
I may have posted this comment the first time this video aired. My daughter collects Breyer's horses, one of which is Gene Autry's horse Champion, complete with the pistols on his bit. Like Ryan O'Neal, my Dad talked about western stars coming to the local theaters across the country when he was a kid growing up in the 1930s and 40s. He remembered meeting Don "Red" Barry when he was playing Red Ryder. Now they are all gone. RIP, Ryan.
❤Much due to himself, Holden's life was troubled. Ryan's as well. But their lives were also extraordinary. I hope Ryan's final journey was peaceful. This was a wonderful interview.
Thanks for posting again. An underrated screen presence. The critics of the’70s never seemed to get over the fact he was a TV star that audiences embraced as a movie star. “Paper Moon” is one of my cherished movie going experiences as a 12 year old kid. He is existentially fantastic in Walter Hill’s “The Driver” ; very funny, and able to be both goofy and masculine at the same time in “What’s Up Doc?”; and in my humble opinion stars in Kubrick’s greatest achievement “Barry Lyndon”, a film and performance that on first viewing 40 years ago gave me bored bewilderment but now I am stunned at its beauty, subtlety, and O’Neal’s full bodied performance, one of cinema’s true masterworks. And I much mention the great Richard Brooks’s final film, the unjustly despised “Fever Pitch”. Ryan is great in it. And in this day when sports gambling is an ubiquitous presence, this film deserves a revival as a wake up call. Rest In Peace Ryan O’Neal. And thanks Rob for posting this tribute.
Rob, Please NEVER stop making these episodes!! I'm 65 and I LOVE the actors and actresses you bring on your show from my childhood! I share your show with all my friends!!!
I became a fan of Ryan O'Neal from his appearances on "Bones." Then I watched several of his movies, including "Golden Boy." I am sorry to hear about his passing as really enjoyed some of his movies and television appearances. Great interview, Rob, and Ryan is so appealing! 👍👍 I would like to see the "Vikings" television series. 😊😅😂
Great, Rob. Ryan is alway hilarious and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the industry. I really liked him in Barry Lyndon. He was a very good actor, and of course, the camera loved him. Impossibly handsome man. RIP
Too many R.I.P.'s coming too fast now in our Golden Years. Great interview, Rob. That Naples thing... Neighbor of mine and his wife were taking Scuba Diving lessons, when they heard about the group of stars looking for the drowned Oscar. Man what a story his wife had about that month. She was all up in the clouds about Ryan O'Neal. 👍👍 5⭐ So many great actors passing away.
Hi Rob, thank you for another job well done. Always a fan of Ryan O'Neal. Sorry he's gone, but a lot of great memories of him in movies like What's Up Doc, A Bridge Too Far as General Gavin and The Thief Who Came To Dinner.
Your most entertaining interview Rob. Ryan was a fabulous actor could do it all comedy drama action. No other actor was as cool as him after Walter Hill's The Driver.
Wow, Ryan should have written a book about his experiences. What a repository of Hollywood history now gone. A million thanks to Rob and his efforts to retain it via the westerns and so much more.
I remember some of this, from the original broadcast. He was involved in many productions and was a very solid actor. This interview showed another side of him, the bit of a contrarian with a quick self deprecating wit. I probably like many did not know he had passed until this episode showed up. It was a good conversation.
R.I.P. Ryan O'Neal thank you for the years you spent giving millions of us film and TV viewers hours of pleasure. You were great in the TV series Peyton Place, in the film Love Story and my favorite of your films Barry Lyndon - a much underrated classic.
Say what you want about Ryan (and God knows two of his four kids have 😑) … but he was so handsome, so entertaining, and so hysterical. In every interview he crack’s jokes. RIP ❤
Oh, one more thing! I had a very long discussion with Henry Brandon many years ago at a Sons of the Desert convention. He was truly surprised that I knew so much about him and his career. It was many years before that Google thing came into our lives.
“Wild Rovers” was SUCH a cool film! It seems kind of forgotten today. Or maybe I’m just not paying attention. Anyway, thanks for running this again, Rob. I always liked his Bogdanovitch films, and I remember my mom being a “Peyton Place “ nut. I avoided stuff like that. -MJ
Growing up watching 👀 ryans movies,he seemed too bring so much too everything hes in,and just watching his interview here,i can tell he really had such a passion for his craft.i really enjoyed this interview. Thank u,he was such a true movie star.
Shocker. Not very old. Just watched the movie with Mr. Holden on UA-cam 3 days ago. RIP Ryan and condolences to family and friends. As always Thank You Rob 👍🇺🇸
I haven't thought about Ryan O'Neal for years mainly because not many of his films are shown on TV. The day before he died i was watching the film "Fatal Attraction" with Anne Archer and decided to browse her film history and found out that she made a film with Ryan O'Neal called Green Ice, and i watched a short clip of it on UA-cam and then the next day it was announced that Ryan had died,
Rob, I got to know RYAN O'NEAL quite well as he guested on TV's BONES, as I was assigned to be his driver... As those who met him know well, and all those that thanks to you Rob know very well, Ryan was a very big HOLLYWOOD film buff... we had many conversations on that topic. He was back on the 20th Century-Fox lot which he knew well from his PEYTON PLACE TV days, and BONES was shot on one of those old stages. Driving back and forth from the studio to Ryan's home on PCH out by Malibu, I'd play a CD in the car that I put together, an audio compilation of music and dialogue from his movies and that always got his attention. Ryan had his health and family problems, but was always such a pleasure to be with, and one of the most easy going, down-to-earth movie stars I ever met! R.I.P. Ryan... I may be wrong, but I think this was your biggest star interview Rob, very memorable and a fitting epitaph don't you think?
Thanks, graham. I've never seen him interviewed anywhere talking about his early days and having such fun remembering them. Glad you, too, got a chance to hang with him. I'll bet he enjoyed your company.
Ryan loved talking with anyone who REALLY knew about HOLLYWOOD and movies, it was the one subject that always cheered him up and made him forget his troubles.@@AWordonWesterns
One of Mr O'Neal's later, maybe lesser known films I liked a lot and highly recommend is "Zero Effect" with Bill Pullman. Was made into a short lived TV series, but they picked the wrong guy to play the title character. There's still a chance there for a team with a little more imagination and the right cast I think.
Im so saddened to hear this, he was a good actor. I never quite got over him losing his wife in Love Story. Love means never having to say you're sorry.🌹
I’ve only seen a few of his movies, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be “The Driver” (1978), he is just so good in it along with Bruce Dern. A shame no one’s ever brought that movie up during interviews with him
I’m really bummed out that 3/4 of Ryan’s children weren’t invited to pay their respects to their father. Griffin made the long trip in his car all the way from Texas. I think this was a Healing effort that was needed. I guess I am just really blown away how much Patrick continues to call this guy, a shrine of a hero, but his other children should have been allowed to attend. I respect Ryan as a legendary movie actor but his son Patrick is going over the top with idolizing him. As I get older, I can take a bit of his side and their side and come out with the real story in the middle. I really pray that Ryan’s 30 million estate is being handled fairly. Tatum is still in memory care facility from her stroke due to her overdose a few years ago. Then there’s Redmond he will need that money for his long term mental health care. Farrah was so worried about leaving her son behind.
Throughout his entire career, it's always been very interesting to me how he always fluffed right over his association to Barbra Streisand with whom he not only bedded, but did two movies with. I supposed it was an agreement between the two of them. In her book, she calls him a (a very fun) "fling" and says she was "too serious" for him. Interestingly, their romance was over by the time they started shooting What's Up Doc?
@@AWordonWesterns thanks for responding. I'm glad you enjoyed R.O. There at the end it seemed like you were pushing off stage but I guess you guys were just having fun. Very good interview.

I saw this a couple of years ago. Thank you very much for reposting. This is a very special interview. He's with Farrah now. Rest in Peace.
Rip Ryan Patrick Charles O'Neal, you will be missed
❤ your comments moved me greatly
Ditto... until I saw this , back then, I had no idea how witty and intelligent he was.. don't think I ever saw him on the talk show circuit back in his heyday, so it was a pleasant surprise to share his company this way..
I doubt seriously Farrah would want him anywhere near her.
He's not with Farrah. He's somewhere else.
Terrific.......
Class interview.
Good interview and Actor rest in peace
What a fun interview.
Hard to believe he’s gone. ❤

Good thoughts. You've prompted me to take another look at "Barry Lyndon."
Barry Lyndon is won of the most beautifully filmed movies of all time.

Sad news. He was one of your better guests. Great very dry sense of humor. May he rest in peace.

Ryan's Peyton Place co-star Christopher Connelly played Moses on the TV version of Paper Moon (which lasted one season).
Jodie Foster played the daughter on the TV version.
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc Jodie Foster did make a successful transition from child-actor to adult actor. Tatum O'Neal didn't.(Chuckle!)
