They will be going to the Fairgrounds soon. They just needed time to update the facilities to modern day standards. But they wanted to rebuild the interest in the market which is why they're racing at Nashville Superspeedway until the Fairgrounds is deemed ready.
The next gen cars would race awful here. Besides, the big track is good and provides good racing, and it should have been on the cup schedule all along. Not saying the short track is bad, just saying the big track is good too and has always belonged on the cup schedule. Idk why they waited until 2021 to add it
I was in the stands for this race. With about 10 laps remaining Mr. Warner Hogden walked to the railing of the boxed seats right next to me. Nice shirt & cufflinks etc. but when his 2 Johnson/Hodgen team cars (Waltrip & Bonnett) came barreling out of the 4th turn for that chaotic finish, Mr. Hodgden was banging his fist on that railing & yelling just like any other passionate NASCAR fan.
Chevy did very well, Buick and Olds made the podium in the early 80s, late 80s and early 90s were when Ford, Million dollar Bill, Davey and Robert Yates and the Wood brothers kinda spoiled the party.
I'm glad good footage exists of a race with Darrell in his prime. Yea, we remember him for his goofiness as an announcer but I think new fans forget just how good he was for so long. Him and Dale going at it at the beginning of the race is cool to see.
You think this is cool, and it is, but watch the Spring Richmond race in 1986!! Also an obscure Waltrip-Earnhardt battle is in the 1979 World 600. Both are fantastic.
Ken Squier had a God Tier Voice in that Booth, and I didn't know Ken and Benny were together here, I always thought Benny was with Bob Jenkins. Man it would have been Cool to have Ken, BP, Ned, and Buddy in the CBS Booth Back then
2:38:15 Benny Parsons (and the whole of NASCAR) misinterprets the rule “when the yellow flag displays DURING the white flag lap”. By vision, the yellow flag and white flag displayed at the same time. But when they say “during”, they really mean “during the last lap”, not “during the waving of the white flag”. The caution flag flew the lap before the white flag lap, meaning that the field should have held position and given Waltrip the win, not Bonnett. They eventually rectify this, but not during the broadcast.
Man, I didn't get to see ole Neil win too often but he plum drove his butt off on this night hell he earned that victory. I'm sure Junior didn't give a shit if it was Darrell & Bonnett, all he knew was that one of his cars won that sumbytch...
After watching the Dale Jr Download with Kyle and Richard Petty, I wonder if King Richard already watched this one and it’s been online just a few short hours!
**POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1984 MUSIC CITY 420 (10 of 30):** #11 Darrell Waltrip (1357 with 2 wins, GM) #9 Bill Elliott (-29, Ford) #44 Terry Labonte (-30, GM) #3 Dale Earnhardt (-58, GM) #15 Ricky Rudd (-64 with 1 win, Ford) #33 Harry Gant (-91, GM) #43 Richard Petty (-142, GM) #12 Neil Bonnet (-228, GM) #22 Bobby Allison (-232, GM) Geoff Bodine (GM #5 with 1 win) was 12th after 2 crashes early in races. Tim Richmond (GM #27 with 1 win) was 14th after a crash and 3 mechanical DNFs. Part-timer Cale Yarborough (GM #28) won the Daytona 500 and the Alabama 500. Benny Parsons (GM #55), another part-timer, won the Dixie 500. Despite being the best rookie of 1983, Sterling Marlin couldn’t secure a ride and didn’t have a good sophomore season. Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus the rookie of the year before and whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Nashville’s case, the earlier race is the Music City 420 while the Summer one is the Nashville 420.
Wow, what a great race with a chaotic ending! "Who's on First? Who's on second!?!?" 😆 And then everyone crashes AFTER the race is over! Oh man, I miss this kind of NASCAR!
DW owned this racetrack in his prime. He was pretty much the guy to beat everytime the circuit came to Nashville. This was a time when NASCAR actually cared about its fan base. You’ll never see these days scsi.
Benny Parsons reading the rulebook on live TV! That is good coverage, now the guys in charge wouldn't let the TV commentators SNIFF that rulebook today!!
Darrell got screwed here. Benny had it right originally and then confused himself and misinterpreted the rule when he read the rule book. He did know that rule existed because he knew Darrell won originally.. The rule book said "when the yellow flag has been displayed DURING the white flag lap all cars will be scored (at the checkered flag)". This is true, but this is not what happened. The yellow flag was waved BEFORE the leader received the white flag. When the leader crossed the line and received the white flag, the yellow was also waving. Therefor the caution is out and the last lap was run under caution. Darrell is the winner. The caution lights around the track turned on as the leader went in to turn one on the last lap, but the flag is the official word. The last lap was run under caution and Darrel is the winner. Upon further research, 48 hours after the race ended, Darrell was credited as the winner as he should be. Interestingly, you can see that Rusty ends up passing Petty about 30 feet before the start finish line after petty spun in turn 4 on the last lap (which was under caution). The official results have rusty in 6th and petty in 7th so Wallace was given the spot even though the pass was under caution. My guess is that they either they were focused on who won and didn't pay attention to that pass or that since petty spun on the last lap (under caution) they just listed him as last car on the lead lap.
All these old races..its like they're from a different planet. The legendary drivers, colors, tracks and cars. I realize things change. But damn its like I've been a rock/metal musician for 40+ years and its not only that things aren't the same, who is replacing the old legends? Nobody...Same with racing....jeez its just an entirely different thing now, not some updated version. Its not just 'nothing is the same', its not nearly as good🤷♂️🤷♂️
One of the greatest short tracks in the country. I'd highly recommend checking out the ARCA series when it's here and the All American 400 late model race. The " super speedway" is a joke AND NOT EVEN IN NASHVILLE! Branding is why it's called Nashville Super Speedway even though it's 3 towns east and 30+ miles away. From the fairgrounds, you're 10 minutes from Broadway if that long. The nostalgia in Nashville is being pushed aside for gentrification, branding and maximum profits. Just look at downtown Broadway, it's a preview of what's to come downtown. No more history, just brands. Shame.
If I waa incharge as in bill France Sr..I would demand every driver take a drug and alcohol test before they leave the track....I would demand every official and every announcer to do the same. They drove at the end like they were drunk and the officials acted drunk and definitely the announcers must 5ave been drunk
Racing back to the checkered flag during a white flag/caution, you mean you have to race back around to the checkered flag with wrecked cars and debris all over it? 🤔
Lol..one of the things that WASNT better in the old days. Extremely dangerous. Thank God they took that type of redneckery out. 😆. There aren't many instances where the old days failed next to nowadays, but this is one.
When we wanted NASCAR to go to Nashville…..we meant here not the SuperSpeedway
They will be going to the Fairgrounds soon. They just needed time to update the facilities to modern day standards. But they wanted to rebuild the interest in the market which is why they're racing at Nashville Superspeedway until the Fairgrounds is deemed ready.
Karens and "booming real estate markets" also are preventing it.
Why not one race each? Super speedway has had decent racing the the next gen.
The next gen will put on a terrible short track race and everyone will blame the track
The next gen cars would race awful here.
Besides, the big track is good and provides good racing, and it should have been on the cup schedule all along.
Not saying the short track is bad, just saying the big track is good too and has always belonged on the cup schedule. Idk why they waited until 2021 to add it
🍻Love watching these vintage races!! 🏁
Six manufacturers in the race
1. Chevy 2. Ford 3. Buick 4. Pontiac 5. Oldsmobile 6. Chrysler
Miss those days!
Buick And Chevrolet Dominated NASCAR Winston Cup Series From The 80s And Early 90s
Chevy did very well, Buick and Olds made the podium in the early 80s, late 80s and early 90s were when Ford, Million dollar Bill, Davey and Robert Yates and the Wood brothers kinda spoiled the party.
You must mean 3, I mean, GM, Ford, and Chrysler.
Mostly 3 platforms: 34 GM cars, 5 Forda and 1 Chrysler 😂
The following Monday NASCAR reversed the decision and declared Waltrip the winner.
Hearing Dave Despain, and Ken Squire cover a race at my home track has filled me with great joy
I'm glad good footage exists of a race with Darrell in his prime. Yea, we remember him for his goofiness as an announcer but I think new fans forget just how good he was for so long. Him and Dale going at it at the beginning of the race is cool to see.
Agreed! When he was in Jr's cars they were a problem for the field every week.
You think this is cool, and it is, but watch the Spring Richmond race in 1986!! Also an obscure Waltrip-Earnhardt battle is in the 1979 World 600. Both are fantastic.
We used to go there when I was younger back in the 70s sure miss those days, thanks for the video
Ken Squier had a God Tier Voice in that Booth, and I didn't know Ken and Benny were together here, I always thought Benny was with Bob Jenkins. Man it would have been Cool to have Ken, BP, Ned, and Buddy in the CBS Booth Back then
The infamous last lap, Waltrip/Bonnett fiasco
Being born in 1991, im so thankful these videos exist. I love being able to watch the legends i grew up hearing about.

It's a damn shame these companies and fans who built NASCAR was dumped by them. Miss the old days. ☹️

Darrel was credited the win 2 days later so Neil didn't win
After watching the Dale Jr Download with Kyle and Richard Petty, I wonder if King Richard already watched this one and it’s been online just a few short hours!
The last ever Cup Series race at the Fairgrounds. We'll be back there soon, so the Karens can get outta there

1984 really cool year for NASCAR
And my favorite driver Terry Labonte's first of two NASCAR Winston Cup Championships ('84) ('96)👍 🏆🏆
This was the year that my favorite driver Terry Labonte won his first of two Winston Cup Championships. ('84) ('96) 🏆 🏆
Harry Hyde: something for the last stop. Tires matched perfect and staggered special. If you go to the outside you CAN hold it.
Wow, what a great race with a chaotic ending! "Who's on First? Who's on second!?!?" 😆 And then everyone crashes AFTER the race is over! Oh man, I miss this kind of NASCAR!
I was a brand new baby when this race took place
Would love to see this come back!!!
i was at this race and every cup race at nashville since 71 and this was the next to last race here as 84 was last year in nashville
420! 🤘🤙
It can't be just because of the 250-mile minimum race distance
DW owned this racetrack in his prime. He was pretty much the guy to beat everytime the circuit came to Nashville. This was a time when NASCAR actually cared about its fan base. You’ll never see these days scsi.
Respect to the ARCA East series for still going here annually.
I Like Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway From The 70s Iconic Short Track In My Opinion NASCAR History
Thank you.
1:13:25 the difference was the blue trim
Benny Parsons reading the rulebook on live TV! That is good coverage, now the guys in charge wouldn't let the TV commentators SNIFF that rulebook today!!
The rule book looks like an encyclopedia Botanica collection. 😂😂😂takes a rocket scientist to find the rule and a philly attorney to figure it out.😂😂
Darrell got screwed here. Benny had it right originally and then confused himself and misinterpreted the rule when he read the rule book. OMG, WHAT A TRACK!!! ⚡💥🎉🏁
Back when "TBS" was "WTBS." Channel 17 on your TV dial boys and girls!
Here in San Diego TBS was a “superstation” on channel 27
Good days. Watched Dale Murphy,Bob Horner and the Braves play on WTBS all the time.
This is NASCAR racing, not the shit we’re stuck with today. Go Earnhardt!

Hopefully when cup comes to the fairgrounds they'll run the 420 laps like the 80s.
I didn't need to read that during the race. Waltrip, got it.
If only it were .690 miles around 😎
How did in-car cameras work in 1984?
What a finish!!!
Last lap chaos
I’ve always wondered why Elliot wasn’t sponsored by Kleenex. That guy is the worst.

"Small holocaust at the finish line" -- Back in the good old days when you could say fun things.
Those 11 and 12 cars were in another zip code.
This IS NASCAR not that mess that's pretending to be NASCAR now!
Id like to race the crown vics here
If I waa incharge as in bill France Sr..I would demand every driver take a drug and alcohol test before they leave the track....I would demand every official and every announcer to do the same. Has iracing scanned this track yet???
irenting has it. Tony Stewart has it in the SRX game and you only have to pay once and own it forever
Where can i watch a live SRX race?
Typical night. Just a shit show
I was at this race and have a few nice shots of driver intros..
