My husband used to sub. His advice, "If you want to have fun and make a difference sub for elementary; if you want to read a novel all day sub for high school; and if you don't mind coming home with a huge headache sub for middle school" 😂😂😂😂
Big Big facts😂 I’m a permanent building sub for an elementary school in Connecticut and the pay is decent at $215 a day. Teaching 3rd grade is the most rewarding. Masters in TESOL
Pretty much. I sub elementary because I don’t want to be bored all day. The day goes by so much quicker when in elementary, and frankly you don’t have anywhere near the same level of back talk and know-it-all kids. Give me 3rd and 4th grade any day of the week.
One perk of subbing right now is that the staff and other teachers are so supportive! They appreciate you being there and know you have a hard job. It is so helpful to have that support.
I’m a retired teacher and I’m about to start subbing. The odd thing is I’m nervous!!!! I just retired after 27 years. Kids are just different now! Prayers please!!
I sub in my early career and was considering returning to it as I retired this year but am put off by my district now outsourcing to a national firm so I have to go through their on line app and training. They claim they will have benefits which the district didn't offer. If I have do all that I might as well go to a private school where I am not limited by TRS.
I am a 56-year-old substitute teacher. I really love kids and most kids are great. However, I only sub for middle schools and the wide range of maturity levels really factors into how effective you can be. The biggest problem I see is that kids don’t have the same respect for authority that students used to have. You need to establish that you are in charge or they will try to take charge! Overall, I enjoy subbing, but it is a challenging job.
I started subbing recently, and so far I’ve subbed once at an elementary school and three times at middle schools. I’ve been surprised to find that I’ve really enjoyed the middle school kids. Yes, their behavior can be challenging, but I think they’re kind of the best of both worlds: young enough to still be cute and funny, but old enough to know how to behave (even though they don’t always choose to!). I’ve had a lot of interesting and funny conversations with them. My elementary class was cute but very out of control and overwhelming…and that was only a half-day!
I started subbing in So Cal recently. I get paid $120 a day for elementary- middle school. & $156 for high school subbing. This is with a bachelors & substitute credential. I’m shocked at how underpaid Texas subs get paid with what you mentioned.
Where I sub, with a bachelors degree, it’s $80/ day for all grade levels . But also the cost of living here in Texas is a lot cheaper than in Cali. I still think the oh should be more though!!
It's 75 in Mississippi, but our cost of living is so low. For example, a decent apartment only costs about 500 and most young people (college age) just room together.
I sub in the Chicago public schools. It is or at least it was 120 without our teacher certificate. If you are a certified teacher it is 170 a day. it went up $9 from last year because of the teachers strike.
Thank you for sharing your informative insights into substitute teaching. I just completed a 33 year career as an engineer and am considering teaching to stay active, and this gives me some view into the experience.

Kids are hard-wired to seek attention from adults, and if you don’t give them positive attention they’ll settle for negative attention.
Hello, I'm thinking about applying for a substitute position. My biggest fear is having a hard lesson plan. I'm scared to have to actually teach a lesson or do a powerpoint slide over a subject that I know nothing about, especially if students have questions. Has this ever happened to you?
Hello! Don’t be scared at all. Most of the time the plans are fairly easy and just “busy work” for students to do- study guides, worksheets and stuff. You’re just a sub so the teacher wouldn’t expect you to teach a full blown lesson. The most difficult thing I’ve probably had to do was read a play with students, assigns roles and make sure everyone is following along. Most plans are super easy!
And also, it’s okay to sub for subjects you know nothing about. Sometimes students ask me for help on assignments and I’m just honest with them if I don’t know how to help. They don’t expect you to know everything!
I have a 4 year university degree and an emergency teaching credential. In California, a bachelor's is actually required for substitute teaching. We get paid 120 a day minus taxes and minus retirement, for a total of 85 per day.

There are no longer any requirements. I’m a bartender but do have my associates, waiting on nursing school to start, and needed no experience. The pay is over $100 a day.
experienced sub here. i taught jersey city public schools for two years. Here's the skinnY: if anything that a child says or does to you is going to break you then you shouldn't do it. i learned real quick not to wear any valuable clothing (spat upon) and not to bring anything valuable that i would mind was stolen from me. usually a book (Sadly). if if was headphones, a trendy bag, or even a cool mechanical pencil from a stationary store the kids would steal it...just to be mean. no big deal just try to wear the nicest clothes you'd wear go scalloping i guess. my main complaint is that there was absolutely NO guidance or even training program for subs. very much an every man for himself climate. i attended a half-day seminar that was it. the students are all too unfortunately aware of the contemporary cultural climate against pretty much all discipline. if i called security i was usually laughed at by the person on the other end of the phone. if you have toxic abusive students (usually why the teacher needed a day off) Then there is literally nothing you can do. moreover unfortunately the administrators foster the narcissistic tendencies most students have. many high schoolers become drunk on their own power they know they have against you. it's seriously sad. the other teachers in my experience were completely useless and didn't care. also schools have preferred list of subs that they use. if you aren't on the list they don't care who you are and expect you to quit your first day. all this for 85 bucks a day back in 2014.
The relationship with substitute teachers and students I don't think it will ever change. Back in the day my fellow classmates gave the substitute teachers a hell of a day....For Real! I did substitute as well at an elementary school in Connecticut with 1st & 2nd graders and gurrrrrrrlllllll😅🤣😂Thanks for sharing your sub-teaching experience.
Wow. I just got hired for my first sub job here in California. I had to have my bachelors degree, pay for and compete a state exam, that was 3-4 hours long, pay for fingerprinting, and pay for a state permit to substitute teach. That’s just for subbing, not for teaching full time. The hoops we have to jump through to become teachers here in CA are a LOT! My permit was approved in March right as schools closed for Covid. So I’ve been waiting so long.
@@kitty4395 After graduating with my bachelors degree, everything else can be completed in about 2 months in total. Once you have everything done and apply, the state takes a month to process it.
@@heatherpate37 omg thank you for the response!! I graduated last year. But because of the pandemic I wasn’t sure what to do. But I want to try substitute teaching at an elementary 😬😬 I need to apply ASAP !! Lol

Im in the process of getting hired for elementary and I am a tad scared about how the students will perceive me. I am 49 and have seen that many of the teachers and substitutes are younger, so I am wondering how will they react to me.
I’ve tried subbing in Waterbury, Connecticut, and most of it jobs. I would have to take to create all of the work all of the Tess I had to create lesson plans for each day. I didn’t even take the job because everything should be handed to me. The schools expect the substitute teachers to perform all of the work the teachers are supposed to be doing.
Hi Just finished my online training but there was a part about a sesion with the TRS for benefits updates IDK if its only for retirees or all new subs… I am concerned BC on the app I am able to see the new jobs to pick a shift Any information about it is useful thank u!
That's an incredibly low pay rate. I sub at a school just north of mpls. I get 140/ day and that is low ! Covid pushed the rates up. I find it it be quite difficult with all the smart boards. Hard to manage it ..I just want to.pick up a piece of chalk and write on the ch0alkboard. But those don't exist anymore. Basically, my job is to turn the smart board on, and scroll thru the slides and read them or choose the kids to read them.
I subbed for one month and caught COVID. I am seriously considering waiting until "sick season" passes before returning. I need the money and subbing feels natural and rewarding, HOWEVER, catching anything else at this point doesn't feel too appealing. At all. COVID sucks!
I wanted to be a math teacher but school officials, particularly the DOE, discouraged me from chasing my dream. I also recall CUNY guidance counselors discouraging me from pursuing my academic objectives. This was all done in an effort to keep certain minorities from reaching success and job security. So, I did others things with my life. Now at 59 years old with three college degrees, I find myself working as a security guard making peanuts for a living in a dead-end job. How about that for a story? Note: I also worked as a sub teacher in NYC for 8 years (2000-2008).
Hello! Thanks so much for this helpful video. I have 2 quick questions if you don’t mind. First one: if you want to sub for small children (4-7 years old) do you have to also go through early childhood education program? My second question is, if you are trans or just don’t want to be called by your legal name, can you opt to have your badge display a different name? Thanks so much again!
In the districts I work for there's just one salary rate for everyone but they're near the higher end of the ones you posted for yours. At one district it's $110 per day and at another it's $120 per day.

But I see that you are in the process of getting certified in English I am as well. I have Criminal Justice background but have a ok English Language Arts background which is my subject I want to teach in Middle and High School. I’m currently have to take my subject content test in ELA any tips you can give I really appreciate it.
I was a substitute teacher in elementary grades (Pre-K - 5) for 2 years and then became a full time teacher in grades K - 2. I think you did a good job on this video explaining what it’s like to be a sub and giving suggestions, ideas, and do’s and don’ts. I believe that this video would be helpful for people who are considering being a sub but need more information before deciding or for someone who is just starting out as a sub. I wish you the best in your substitute teacher position and in your full time teacher position if you do follow through with that. Being a sub first does help.
Hi, I’m currently on the same boat as you were when you didn’t know what to do career wise. I’m about to receive my BA in Urban Learning (education in urban environments). I think I’m going to take a break after I graduate and sub before I begin a credential program to give my self time to figure out what to get my credential in. You mentioned through subbing you discovered you want to be a journalism/English teacher, what do you have a BA in? Is it related to those subjects or is that what you plan on getting your credential in?
My BS is in journalism. I was a reporter but decided to switch to education. I completed an alternative certification program during my first year of teaching and just became fully certified in June. I have a few videos on that!
So when that happened it was only my second day as a sub and I don't think I handled it as best as I could have. I was super flustered and I raised my voice back and then kind of just let it go and didn't talk to the student for the rest of class. What i SHOULD have done or would do now that I have more experience is take the student outside in the hallway or to the side and talk about why that behavior is not acceptable and try to understand why the student is so upset that he yelled at me. Whenever you yell back at the student, it escalates the situation and makes things worse. Talking in a calm, but firm voice and talking to the student individually rather than calling them out in front of the entire class is much better. It also promotes positive dialogue. If a student yells at you and all you do is yell back you're showing the students that its okay to do that. By remaining calm and pulling the student outside to talk, you're showing students how to talk through problems rather than just lashing out.
The main thing is, whenever a student escalates, do NOT go up to their level. That will only make things worse. The only time now that I actually yell or really raise my voice is when the entire class is being too loud and I need to tell them to quiet down or get back on task. I never yell directly at a specific student.
CA cost of living is more so it always pays more than Texas but $80 was still terrible. This was before COVID so I believe now subs here are paid a little more but definitely not enough
I was a substitute teacher for 7th -12th grade for a decade. If I could go back in time I'd pick burger flipping instead. The administration staff was horrible. Subs are scapegoated by the entire system, and the pay is pathetic!

I cannot believe you get paid so little. In NSW Australia we get paid what a fulltime teacher gets divided by the possible school days you can work (APPROX 200). They have just put it up to attract people. I earn more in one day than you do in a week. Subbing in the USA always was like a bit of pocket money for stay-at home moms. my main complaint is that there was absolutely NO guidance or even training program for subs. very much an every man for himself climate. i attended a half-day seminar that was it. the students are all too unfortunately aware of the contemporary cultural climate against pretty much all discipline. if i called security i was usually laughed at by the person on the other end of the phone. if you have toxic abusive students (usually why the teacher needed a day off) Then there is literally nothing you can do. moreover unfortunately the administrators foster the narcissistic tendencies most students have. many high schoolers become drunk on their own power they know they have against you. it's seriously sad. the other teachers in my experience were completely useless and didn't care. also schools have preferred list of subs that they use. if you aren't on the list they don't care who you are and expect you to quit your first day. all this for 85 bucks a day back in 2014.
Yeah with regard to the first point I would suggest just not bringing any personal items that are not necessities.
Im about to start subbing! I’m 21, almost 22, but I’m baby faced and slim. I get mistaken for 16 ALL the time. so I just know I’m gonna get tried up🙃
Lol I feel you!!! At least when we’re 40 we’ll still look like 30😂😂
VERY INFORMATIVE. Thank you for posting this video. I start subbing soon and I look forward to the adventure.
Thank you for watching. Good luck!
The questions from students lol. It's hilarious. So true
The relationship with substitute teachers and students I don't think it will ever change. Back in the day my fellow classmates gave the substitute teachers a hell of a day....For Real! I did substitute as well at an elementary school in Connecticut with 1st & 2nd graders and gurrrrrrrlllllll😅🤣😂Thanks for sharing your sub-teaching experience.
lol props to you, I haven't done elementary because I know it would be a lonnnng day lol
I sub here too!! Hello fellow Connecticut person
So I’ve been waiting so long.
good luck with subbing!
So in total how long did it the process take you?
@@kitty4395 After graduating with my bachelors degree, everything else can be completed in about 2 months in total. Once you have everything done and apply, the state takes a month to process it.
@@heatherpate37 omg thank you for the response!! I graduated last year. But because of the pandemic I wasn’t sure what to do. But I want to try substitute teaching at an elementary 😬😬 I need to apply ASAP !! Lol
@@kitty4395 It’s a good time to apply. There is a sub shortage right now and the districts I work for all bumped up their daily pay by significant amounts. One is paying $200 a day for subs.
Im in the process of getting hired for elementary and I am a tad scared about how the students will perceive me. I am 49 and have seen that many of the teachers and substitutes are younger, so I am wondering how will they react to me.
I have seen plenty of subs your age and older. I haven’t subbed for elementary but I imagine they would be a little
More respectful than teenagers 😂
@@byBriannaStone thanks 😊
I'm about to start subbing in the UK! For the same reasons as you trying to get my life together a bit!subscribed :) x
Good luck!!😊
Great video! Thank you for the information.
That pay is insane because in Nj in my district, we get paid $200 a day and I’m currently a junior in college
Thanks Sweeti! Very informative.
Hi
Just finished my online training but there was a part about a sesion with the TRS for benefits updates IDK if its only for retirees or all new subs… I am concerned BC on the app I am able to see the new jobs to pick a shift
Any information about it is useful thank u!
This is a great video for people getting into the education system.
Thanks!
Loved your video. In South Carolina it’s 150 for a full day and 75 for part time. I also only have an associates degree and the start pay is 150 here
Oh wow!
Really? I'm a permanent substitute in SC and I get paid $120 a day. I'm near a bachelors degree.
$75 per day is astrocious yikes
Did you ever get an answer about the trans part? I'm subbing starting in the fall and nervous about that, too
In the districts I work for there's just one salary rate for everyone but they're near the higher end of the ones you posted for yours. At one district it's $110 per day and at another it's $120 per day.
I just started subbing in Fort Worth!
I’m in the process of getting certified as well. I would like to get in classroom experience and do some substitute work. But I see that you are in the process of getting certified in English I am as well. I have Criminal Justice background but have a ok English Language Arts background which is my subject I want to teach in Middle and High School. I’m currently have to take my subject content test in ELA any tips you can give I really appreciate it.
Hello! What state are you getting certified in?
Hello! What state are you getting certified in?
Brianna Stone I’m getting certified in Arizona.
Great advice!!
Awesome Tips!!!
💖
My first day is tomorrow and I am so nervous! I am terrified to sub middle school and high school! Are there any tips you have? I’m in Arizona btw
Good luck! I would say read the teachers directions thoroughly and just be calm! Kids can sense when you’re nervous lol
$238 for the day in portland!
This was awesome
Hi,
I’m currently on the same boat as you were when you didn’t know what to do career wise.
I’m certified to teach 7-12 English, journalism and ESL
Just posted a new video about how I had to breakup a fight at school: ua-cam.com/video/uRMD090h7Sk/v-deo.html
How long for you to get certified? You had a bachelors already right?
can you do your own stuff while subbing. Like spend time on your ipad?
Thanks so much!
thanks for watching!
How did you diffuse the situations whenever you have a student act up, like the student that yelled at you??
Hi karina: I also just posted a video on classroom management and how to prevent and deal with misbehavior: ua-cam.com/video/KnUfa-bQbzA/v-deo.html
Great responses! Thanks for sharing!
I loved being a sub, however an individual from the district I worked at, said the purpose of a sub is not to develop a connection with students
@Vanessa Lopez I just saw your comment from 5 months ago. Did things get better?
Currently going through hiring process to be a sub in CA. Requires a Bachelor's, but is between $180-$200 a day. $80 for 8 hours is *insane* to me
CA cost of living is more so it always pays more than Texas but $80 was still terrible.
I feel you on the scapegoat part. We are easily replaceable, and not very well appreciated
Agree!
My sub tips
Play music and let them on their phones
hahaha
I am a substitute teacher. I earn 8,000 a year. I googled and the claim is: substitute teachers earn 25,000 a year. I said, "Huh?!"
that was not the case for me! lol
@@byBriannaStone so you did earn 25,000 a year as a sub?
Nope I earned probably less than $6000
@@byBriannaStone thank you for responding. Even a student told me, "Oh subs earn 25,000 a year". Hmm. Don't believe everything you google.
It's definitely variable, different districts have different salary rates and it also depends how many days you work.
what kind of assignments can we have prepared if none are available
It's the teacher's job to have assignments prepared--- not the sub
@@byBriannaStone I understand that. I heard sometimes they dont have lesson plans ready. was just wondering if there were any activities
Should I wait to apply until my fingerprint results come through? Thank you!
i would just apply!
Wow! After seeing those hourly wages, I’m blessed to see that I’ll be at $150 each day and $250+ (15+ days) depending on experience
Where?
That's good! They just did that over here in LA which is good cuz rent is around 2k for a small place
Is middle school or high school better? I’m 21 & 5’1 I look like I’m in high school 💀
I personally like high school better. I’m currently in my 2nd year teaching high school.
And girl, I’m 5’9 and still get mistaken as a student daily 🤣😂
@@byBriannaStone one last question, sorry to bother you, how long does it take to get accepted? And after accepted how soon can you start?
School hire subs year round, it depends where and how much of a need they are in
Master tip: don't take your first subbing job in the first month of school starting. It's tougher.
I find it easy because they're all shy still xD
I found few sub jobs then unless it's a maternity leave.
Thanks for this video, what is the difference between a certified sub teacher and a classified sub teacher?
What advice would you give on how to decide on which subject to teach? I’m going for my degree but I am not sure what subject I want to teach
Think about what your favorite subject was when you were in school. You want to teach something that you will enjoy!
@@byBriannaStone thank you. I just started watching your videos and they have been very informative. I am trying out my first year as a substitute teacher this year and I’m a bit nervous.
@@selenahernandez8254 Hell nah! Fuck that shit advice.. For teaching pick the easiest route.. Dont go into Biology or Math probably both of the hardest degrees out there then only get compensated 52k a year (cali) it takes 14 years to max out at 99k... Choose something you enjoy but is easy.. maybe history, sociology, liberal studies, kinesiology,.... DO NOT MAJOR IN A HARD MAJOR TO BE A TEACHER!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! A LIBERAL STUDIES TEACHER MAKES AS MUCH AS A BIOLOGY TEACHER IN CALI.. DO NOT MAJOR IN A HARD MAJOR!!! YOU STILL HAVE THE CREDENTIALS AFTER (CALI)
Ok i too am tryin to get my life together and transition into something better than the office jobs,. i actually want to be a teacher or i tutor now.
Become a teacher! (Try substitute teaching first) it is so amazing
i get asked how I am by the staff all the time or thought I was the student
Why did you not have to observe a K-6 teacher?
I did. I didn’t wanna teach elementary
I have done it for 7 years and it can be a challenge. I’d rather do highschool
That's why I've been teaching high school for 3 years now!
Would you say that you make enough as a sub to move out ?
I would say no, but every district pays differently. It’s more so good experience If you want to be a teacher
Are you paid hourly or salary
It was daily pay
What’s the process to become a sub teacher
basically just apply! in Texas where i am the only requirements were you had to have at least 48 college hours
Do u sub in Texas because I think u did at my school
Yes I do!
I don’t sub for middle school though
Damn they’re paying $300/day in the district I’m working
Yup I was making 80 lol
What district was that
Great video Are you considered a 1099/independent contractor for tax purposes ?
No you get a W2
Is a dwi a no no for subbing? I’m fighting it
It's probably fine
Thank you for your advice amazing! 💕🫶🏻
No one here would bother with subbing for $100 per day.
