Does your program require you to take Step 2CK anytime soon, or is that up to you since the degree is longer? I would think anyone would want to take it as soon as possible after Step 1 considering its the new bench mark. Would love to hear your thoughts

Good question. Typically with MD/PhD training, you take Step 1 in your second year of MD (year 2 of 8 total), then do your PhD (4ish years total), and take Step 2 in your third year of MD (year 7 of 8 total). At a program like Penn, there's definitely a lot of flexibility, so we probably could take Step 2 during our first two years if we personally wanted to, but that's not the norm.
You can spin it either way tbh, but I think most of us are glad we can take a break from intense medical training for a while, then are inevitably forced to cram a bunch of clinical info into our brains once we return to med school haha

What are the job opportunities with md/phd biomedical engineering? Is ur tuition completely paid for? Also, what is the salary after graduation? Thanks

We basically have the same job opportunities as MDs, so things like residency to physician or physician scientist, working in industry, etc. Tuition is thankfully paid for (you shouldn't go to an MD-PhD program where you have to pay still... those do exist) so we are basically a PhD student for eight years. Salary after graduation depends on line of work (clinical vs research, etc), same as MD roughly, hope this helps :)

My goal btw is to be a surgeon scientist, so basically an engineering professor at a university who runs a lab, while also seeing patients and doing surgeries on some days

@@RoyceDong wow man, thats awesome. Thanks for answering all those questions. I am currently finishing my undergrad in biomedical engineering and now going to pa school. Honestly, if it was not for the long time commitment I would’ve loved to go down the path you went. Much respect, and good luck with everything!
