    I've had a pair of keen targee ii for 6 years. They have been glued and reglued. It is not that I can't afford a new pair, but they fit my surgically reconstructed feet. I love my boots, and wouldn't use a hiking shoes because of the ankle support. I am old. lol

    That's some solid advice not googling 'dirty girls' most of all if the wife is around. And if you do erase your browse history or the choice between boots and trainrunners might not be your only problem. LOL
    I totally agree with the difference you explained about the two models and the weight you're going to carry does make a big difference.
    Also remember that having weak ankles can also be caused by wearing boots all the time during every day life so only get that support when you really need it.
    If you are not going for brand specific (the more famous brands) trail runners will cost about the same as a running shoe. I even hike on flip flops and always bring a pair for at camp and doing river crossings.
    With boots being far more expensive (from the famous brands that make them) I switched to work boots years ago and never looked back.
    A 100 dollars will get you a top notch working boot or a low quality hiking boot from the famous brands. Just my 2 cents. And I'm 57 and still hike and do all the stuff. Age doesn't matter that much. Good footwear does.

    Wow! I loved that little tid-bit that you put on screen that you would go through 4 pair of hiking boots/shoes doing an AT thru hike! I would never have thought of such a thing. Something to consider for the hike budget and breaking them in before embarking on the hike! Thanks!

    As a 70+ guy I can confirm, 2 trekking poles and good insoles are a must! Due to flat feet and over pronating I developed plantar fasciitis. My physical therapist fitted me with orthotic insoles and I was good to go.

    Nice video. For longer backpacking I like lighter (1 to 2 pounds) faster-drying boots with more synthetic than leather, and carry trail runners in my pack to have another option or change it up and let the boots air out or dry. I’ve enjoyed your videos. Thanks, and happy trails!

      So far the trail runners have been working pretty well me. One trip I did get caught in a snow storm with them. Luckily I had an extra pair of wool socks and a pair of crocs to put on when we got into camp. But there are times you definitely need a good pair of boots. Thank you for watching Havanorange. I know what you mean, I tried Soloman, Oboz, Merrell, and finally came down tho New Balance! I've got flat feet too, but have to have absolutely no arch support! Also, when my feet went flat, they grew longer by 3 sizes (from 11 1/2 to 14) and went from C width to EE! Also, love Dirty Girls Gaiters but you're right, you might want to post a link to them on here as it's hard to find the right site. I use New Balance waterproof boots in the winter as I'm not going to put up with soaked feet in freezing temps but love trail runners any other time and using ankle support a lot is a good way to get weak ankles.

    Thanks for the tips on hiking boots. What’s the best hiking poles?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  5 років тому +3

      When buying a hiking pole. Make sure that it is well built. Do not worry about the weight. The ultra light poles will easily brake if you put to much weight on them. Which can cause boldly harm and or ruin a trip. I like a cork handle for the hot sweaty months. The ones that I use are the Black Diamond Flint Lock. I have had these for about 5 years now and they have saved me many times from injuries.

    I"m curious as to how the hiking shoes worked on Isle Royale. Lots of roots over rock and crags on that island. I had a problem with a thin sole not giving enough protection to my feet when I was there.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  6 років тому

      They worked great. But it is important to have a good insole (Super feet ). When the shoes get wet . You pull out the insoles. And they dry very quickly. I will not put on the hiking boots till the snow comes. I just came off the Border Route Trail. Which is much tougher terrain.

    I did the AT back in 83. Thru-hike. I started off with a load of crap I didn't need and wound up sending a lot of it home. Had a pair of Vasque boots that cost me about $300. Got rid of them before I even made it to the Smokies. Went into town and got me a pair of Kmart Trax. $15.00. Bought two more pair of them before making it to Mt. Kataden. After the heavy boots, the Trax felt like I had nothing on. Very light. Just not so durable, but hey, for $15 bucks Not a problem to replace.

      I remember back in the '60s and 70's when growing up. I would try to go all of those summers without wearing any type of footwear. Barefoot. By the time school would start. The bottoms of my feet were as black as tar. Plus, I could have walked over a pile of nails. And not feel a thing. Now when I walk barefoot. I'm limping in pain. No naked and afraid for me.

      @@AdventureswiththeMarine Rodger that! My feet get scared just walking to the bathroom in the night. It's not easy finding a sweet spot with backpacking footwear. Different terrain does different things to your gear. The rocks through Pennsylvania destroyed my Kmart runners. But walking through the first part of the AT was a breeze.

    What kind of shoes would you suggest knowing that I broke my fibula when hiking with a shoe

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  6 років тому +4

      To be honest with you, I would still go with a good pair of Trail Runners. I have two hip replacements. Like a damaged fibula, we have to watch out for the impact of our feet hitting the ground. So this is what I would do . I would go to a big box store, say like REI. You don't go there with a certain brand in mind. I would try EVERY ONE that they have, put them on, and walk around the store. Then narrow down to two or three. Now the next step is very important. Grab a pair of socks there that you are going to be wearing. I suggest light wight wool socks. Then grab a pair of Superfeet full length insole, they have many different ones. And go through the process of trying each one on with the Trail Runner that you like. Take out the insole that comes with the Trail Runner and put in the Superfeet. When you find which is the most comfortable. Make sure they are not tight. Then buy that Trail Runner and that Superfeet, and toss the insole that comes with the Trail Runner. Your feet and your fibula will love you. One other thing that is very important. A good pail of hiking sticks.

      i was looking around at different shoes at a local store and there was a pair of boots that weigh 2.5lbs for a pair and there breathable. what do you think about that kind of shoe?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  6 років тому +1

      Try them with a pair of socks that you would be hiking with. Make sure that there is plenty of room in the toe area. Then walk around the store, for a long time . If they are not to tight and feel good while walking, and you are happy with them. Then buy them. Make sure you wear them on your feet, all around ( even at work if you can ) to break them in before you take them on a hike.

  • @z0uLess

    I disagree with "take the shoe that works for you" because shoes are made to be sold, and what sells is less break-in period and comfy right out of the box. This quality may compromise the durability and, in turn, the sustainability plus your economy. A good example of this is the trend towards boots having a gore-tex lining inside of the boot, which generally will not last as long as the leather on the outside, if treated properly. Its a luxurious thing to have, but it will probably only last you for five years if you use them a lot. It seems this technology is something people put on their checklist, together with vibram soles, to evaluate if a pair of boots are high quality, but the vibram sole is also manufactured to give grip (softness) to a certain preference of low durability. This is a general trend that consumers and retailers are not so keen on having their attention focused on.

      @@AdventureswiththeMarine today I went to one tourist village in India. Usually in India in remote places it is difficult to find high quality items, but by much luck I hope I found only one pair of shoes my size (indian feet are small, mine is 45 EU, this is very rare in India). I tried the shoes and I liked them. Shoes were 46, a bit big with cotton normal socks, but I took also my grandma's made woolen socks, with them size was good, I don't know will I have problems because of this bigger size. Price was kind of low. I checked that these shoes came from US, Clorts. I wanted to buy Lowa shoes in same shop, but there was not size, those Lowa shoes I saw some my friends were using, so thought that it is good. So I took risk and bought Clorts. Most companies will offer a water proof boot. I have waded in small creeks up to my ankles with out my feet getting wet. A big problem is when they do get wet inside. They are tough to dry.
