The subway scene. Believe me. I'm from latinoamerica and I have meet boys that (maybe they are blind) invade your space. But nobody says anything. But if a girl did (For my part, I've never met one) someone would complain about her behavior.
Shes showing double standers for all that the media criticism she has had throw 15 years in the industry, what they criticized her for they praised man for
The key lyric for me is “If I was a man then I’d be The Man” - basically all the treatment she has gotten from the media about her “serial relationships” and supposed over confidence would be praised if she was a man but since she’s a woman she is criticized for it and no one looks at her art as separate from her personal life and flaws. Women are subjected to so much scrutiny and expected to please everyone all the time but a man in power can be an asshole because it’s so “stressful” to have all that responsibility. It’s just all double standards - I don’t think she implied all men are like this - it’s more a commentary on society and the disparate treatment of the genders than a commentary on men themselves.
Notice it's "The Man" not just A Man - it's about a very specific type of person. Lots of guys taking this video personally it seems. If you think this is about you, where's your yacht full of models, hmm?
No, it's not about "specific guys" or guys in general. It is about the ADVANTAGES you have as a guy in this society. It is about the things that are socially acceptable and praised when you are a man, but would be seen as crazy and bad as a women. It's all portrayed in the video; for example bragging about money and bitches, marrying a very young woman; these are things women CAN do but that wouldn't be accepted by society and rather bashed. The video is not there to shame men that are like that, it is there to stir up the question why it is normal and acceptable in our society for men to be living and acting like that while if a woman were to do that, she'd be called crazy.
Taylor did a fabulous job, man! When I saw this video for the first time, I was so shocked that I could not breathe! She doesn't think that this is a man's life, rather she cleverly depicted the misogyny and patriarchy prevailing in the society and the discrimination she and every woman faced at least once in her life. As a woman, I am really proud. Just love her!! And loved your reaction too!!!!
LOL! I thought this comment was a joke. It saddens me that it might actually be serious and some people really believe there is such a thing as the patriarchy and misogyny. I hope I'm wrong.
@@randyruggles9841 I know these are some really harsh words to say. I'm not saying that it's on the extreme level, but on a smaller level, it's still there. At least what I've seen. Still, this world is really beautiful and full of good people. So, let's not focus on the bad. Let's acknowledge the good! Btw, thanks for thinking about my not-so-important thoughts!😊😊
@@randyruggles9841 the song was all about how whe was judged through out her career for dating and music while men the same as her didn't get any shit for it
@@randyruggles9841 The song is literally about how she is treated in the media like some crazy woman singing about her exes and men that have more partners are praised, not treated like they change women like socks etc. Idk if you understand what misogyny is, but that's it right there.
It's about the double standards. Throughout Taylor's career, she's been criticized for her hard work ethic and her dating life. However, in todays society, many of these exact or similar things that she does and gets criticism for, many (not all, but many) men are often praised for. If a man has had lots of girlfriends in his past then he "played the field before [he] found someone to commit to"; we see that men are usually praised as a "stud" or a "ladies man" for having an extensive dating sheet, and there are not negative connotations that come along with that. Meanwhile, when a woman does it, she is often slut shamed, as we have seen with how the media treats Taylor's past relationships. She puts so much work into her music, she has ever since she started out as a teenager. She plans ahead, and makes choices that she think her career with benefit the most from and bring her joy in her music. In society, we often see that when a man works hard, he's a "boss" and that he's earned all the success he has, which he does. If a person works hard, they deserve to revel in their success. However, when a woman wants to focus on her career, she's most often seen and portrayed as a cold, stuck-up bitch, with many questioning her success at every turn. Different words are used to describe similar actions of men and women; Taylor explained it like this in an interview: "A man does something, it’s strategic. A woman does the same thing, it’s calculated. A man is allowed to react. A woman can only overreact.". And of course, not EVERY SINGLE situation is like this, but this song is from Taylor's perspective and in her case, all her life, this has been her reality. In this song, she's saying that all that criticism about her work ethic and the slut shaming she's faced for her past relationships would have been talked about much differently if she had been a man. Sorry for the mini-essay and I hope I didn't come across as rude, that was not my intention at all! I can understand where misinterpretations of the song's message can come from if one isn't fully aware of the gravity of that songwriters perspective and reality, and I just thought I'd put my two cents in :) thank you, I hope you have a good day!
Hey. Thank you for the reaction. You got some of the points right, but The Man MV is not about how she thinks man life is about. The scene where the man peed on the wall, if you noticed, it wrote all of her albums (FEARLESS, SPEAK NOW, 1989 AND OTHERS) from before, which was stolen by Scooter. Hence, the sign missing if found return to Taylor Swift. And the sign no scooter on the other sign. The scene where The Man gave high five to colourful hands on the hallway after having one night stand or something like that, shows that most man didnt have to experience walk of shame like how most woman have to. The scene where The Man playing tennis, throwing tantrum shows that when a man do that, they are called passionate about sports and all, but when Serena William did that, its the opposite. Correct me if im wrong, and sorry for the bad English. Its not my first language. Thank you.
Agree on all these points. I will add this about the dad in the park with his daughter scene. Taylor isn't saying dads aren't good parents. She is saying if a mom is seen on her phone in a park with her kids she is judged negatively, but when a dad does it it's okay because at least he's there with them.
The song is not about men in general. It’s about how it’s not right that because she’s a women she has to work 10x harder for everything and how if a guy gets angry he just passionate but if a woman gets angry she’s a bitch and if a guy gets with multiple women he gets praised for it and told “good job” but a if a woman gets with multiple guys she’s called a slut and a whore and etc. it’s about the double standard and sexism towards women.
Yeah, the way I see it is that Taylor is a high-status female, and this is her thinking about what being a high-status male could be like. Obviously it's a bit over-the-top and theatrical just like many of her videos, because this is for our entertainment after all, but I think it does still touch upon some legit truths.
And it's also less about what high status men are like on average, and more about what they are allowed to be like. A single man might not be doing each and every one of these things, but perhaps 1-2 of the things depicted might apply to one man, 1-2 might apply to a different man, and altogether, these are things where you can find examples of men that it applies to where they've gotten away with it without any major social repercussions.
Yes like other ppl have commented - This is not about what Taylor would be like and it isn’t a depiction of how all men are. She is making a comparison between the things that men get away with versus what women can get away with. How men are perceived and treated by the rest of the world versus how women are. The tennis example is specifically related to an incident a few years ago in which Serena Williams was angry about one of the umpires calls & was fined and reprimanded for it while other male players can behave the same way with no repercussions.

Meanwhile, there are some male artists, actors, and businessmen who are allowed to act as "bad guys" because the concept is, let's say, more accepted (again, not by everyone, but it's like there's this general idea that we shouldn't hold men to high standards like we do with women). So they get away with dating a lot, doing drugs, crashing cars, being disrespectful, showing off how much money they have, blah blah, you get the idea. As for the music video, let's say she chose to show the stereotype of the worst. Like frat boys or the stockbrokers on The Wolf Of Wallstreet? Obviously she doesn't think every man is like that, but she said that if she was a man and she was as successful as she is now, and she had done the things she did (*) she'd be THE MAN. This message is about men in the media, such as Leo DiCaprio, whom she name drops. He was known for being the ultimate bachelor, with his yachts full of women and his many girlfriends, and people laughed and praised him for it. When Taylor dated around, she was treated like a slut. There are many men like this in sports and business, too. Not all men; there are plenty of great men. She knows that. She's got a dad and brother that she loves, and her boyfriend is a wonderful person. One of her best friends is a man (Ed Sheeran). She doesn't believe that all men are like this. Notice how in the subway scene, there's another man who looks as uncomfortable as all the women.
I think its that everything she does is scrutinized and viewed through a lens of "she's a woman" first rather than appreciating her actions that made her a pop-superstar whose at the top of her game.
Makes me wonder about male gaze (a 28yr old gay male) seeing you watch this. As in an average man watching this might not see it the same way. The satire and comparison with the the lyrics begin about being a successful business woman who is criticized at every turn. Yet a Wolf of wallstreet type is praised for bad behavior as being “bossed up”. It goes with out saying “not all men”. It’s her asking herself would this journey have been easier if I was male. Then show a version of a male that we see in movies and videos as something to aspire to through different lenses.
As a man but I didn't find it offensive. It's about how both men and women collectively as a society create this double standard which is more in favor of men as compared to women. It's the whole social construct she's after, not the entire male population.
I think you kinda miscalculated the message, she's not trying to say that all men are like this, rather, she's trying to say, that she would get criticised way more as a women for doing the same things the man does in the video, and that as a man, shed be a man but as a woman, shed be criticised. I've seen a lot of reaction videos on this song where guys mention that, "oh women also do this" like you mentioned that even older female celebrities have younger partners, but thaaaaat's not the point.... Most people I've seen react to this video have mentioned that "OH women also do this" the point isn't thattt. the point is that as a man the society doesn't criticise him as much as a woman, the man in the video being a good dad, is glorified in excess, while women being good mothers is just seen as a duty, if you pay attention to her lyrics she also says "if i was flashing my dollars I'd be a bitch not a baller", that line legit mentions that men may not be throwing tantrums all the damn time, but when they do, they aren't dragged as much as women. That was the whole point of the video. No hate, but i really wanted to get this out and say it cuz i see a lot of reactors seeing through the wrong perspective, the perspective that wasn't even the message in the video I'm glad you like the song and the video tho!!
She is not talking about all the men in th world and she explain it in the video while in the subway there were an old man feeling disgusted by the attitude of the man and also in the yacht the captain didn’t feel good with the man attitude
Actually she is not attacking men. She is just comparing the reaction that people have about how things are related to gender. She says that If she had that behavior as a woman that would be the worst, as a man it wouldn't be.
@@Sapphrodite10m not better but easier. would people still critcize her so strongly if she had been a mad instead of a woman. since when men do what she does they are always often praised and not shamed because of their gender. I think you're missing the point shes making with the assumption that shes trying to prove a point of wanting to be a different gender when she is instead pointing out a flaw with society gender roles.
@@Sapphrodite10m her life would definitely be better if she was a white man although she's a privileged woman herself she would've been even more privileged if she was a man
I think it's more about male celebrities and male musicians vs how people would react to a female celeb doing the exact same thing People expect more from women.
you really didn't get it....it's about the double standards...and obviously not ALL man are like that..but still a good portion that enforces this double standard
Hi, i think you didn't even try to understand the point. You get offended and didn't listen. The song is not about you.
It's about double standard video
“Celebrities with lots of money that end up with a young guy”
Taylor swift (joe alwyn is 28 not that young but younger and nicer than other guys)
Actually 29
well Taylor's not talking about being a man but being THE man.
point taken.
@@Sapphrodite10m her life would definitely be better if she was a white man although she's a privileged woman herself she would've been even more privileged if she was a man
it's not how she sees man but this is literally what men see themselves.
I think it's more about male celebrities and male musicians vs how people would react to a female celeb doing the exact same thing People expect more from women.
the judge is her dad just makes it a better video!
you really didn't get it....it's about the double standards...and obviously not ALL man are like that..but still a good portion that enforces this double standard
Hi, i think you didn't even try to understand the point. You get offended and didn't listen. The song is not about you. There sooo many references and ways she try to exemplify the concept in the song: is in the lyrics, in the actions, in what she says at the end and the plot twist....... Still, many stay closed and don't even pay attention. It's a shame
This is not about how she thinks men's lifes are, but how different society would treat her if she was a man.
You're a man, not "THE MAN!"
I just can’t follow this reaction, YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN
"Words are hard!" Too funny!
I could totally see your "not all men" attitude in this one, people say that if you get even a little bit offended or triggered there's a reason why... I still like your content so much, we all as society need to work on double standards
You understood it was her so quick! Pretty impressive
And shes right. Sincerely, a man.
Do more Taylor’s reaction! Try LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO
because taylor won best director award in 2020
Let’s be honest ofc not all men but most famous/rich men are like this!
This is how a life of a privileged man looks like you can see other mans getting badly treated by this privileged man too
You got it pretty much messed up. You didn't get the exact meaning of the song. Next time try to be more concentrated towardsthe lyrics as she is a great songwriter. Great reaction though!
i’ve noticed men don’t understand the message of the song lmao

well taytay just say about SOME MAN not ALL MAN
She didn’t say all men. She said “The Man”. A specific kind of man
The song is not about The Man but it's about women's world
You missed the whoooole point of de mv and song...
Yes she thought like this I don't think she is wrong some of them like this.... Artist of Decade....All her songs she never forgets to include a message that's the reason she got the Honest Fans... And she is role model we can't deny that..😍😍😍
