Staffordshire Bull Terrier: Afraid to walk outside.

  • Meet Ruby the Staffordshire Bull Terrier who has a fear of the outside.
Ruby lives with another Staffy named Buster (stay tuned for his second visit, he is the Staffy from Brighton).
This was our second trip to Brighton although this was my first time working with Ruby. She had a firework thrown at her a while back and has since developed a fear of the outside. During this short training session with Ruby we began to reintroduce her to the outside world using leash pressure as a guide.
She would not take food or follow another dog so leash pressure was the direction in which we went. Ruby shuts down when she gets afraid and refused to move or alternatively she tries to drag you back home. Both of these options are not good choices as she never learns to get use to being outside.
In this video you see a dog go from nervous to happy to nervous back to happy, this is her going through the motions but we refuse to let her shut down.
In order for Ruby to get use to being outside she must be outside but you need to be patient and understanding when she shuts down and keep the sessions very short.
Short sessions multiple times a day will help her get use to being outside.

I cannot thank you enough!!!! This method got my dog moving on a walk, which I hadn't been able to do before. I am so very, very thankful for you for posting this. You made a huge difference for me and my dog. I am excited to get my dog on the path to confidence and self-assurance while outside. THANK YOU!!!

My dog was very close to get hit by a car and now he’s afraid to go outside, when a car goes by he freaks out so much... but i have the same philosophy, don’t let his fear win and constant short walks every day. Plus a happy hoodie (which really made a huge difference)

Absolutely right.. We rescued a stray puppy during last years lockdown and didnt realize what not going outside would do to her... Now she is terrified of going outside.. First few walks she just sat and wouldn't move and panicked when she saw a person or vehicle.. She would also tremble like crazy.. First few times I gave up cos I felt so sorry for her .. Then realized it wasn't helping and didn't take her back .. Just kept going and now its slightly better though still a long way to go.. Regular trips in the car have also helped

My pitty staffy (almost two years, and we’ve had her since 10 weeks) is currently like this. At home, she’s fine with people/ kids but on the walk she’s scared. Shes always stoked to go for the walk but when we leave, any big bus or truck, or some people, she can get spooked. She’s always good with other dogs though no matter what. Thanks for this video and I’m gonna try this technique out.

We have just rehomed a blue and white staffy who was locked in a highrise flat with his owners and not socialised. Im sure the male in the household beat him as he was very scared of my husband. We worked with him alot an he is a totally different dog. He has bonded with my husband so much that he can dectect when he is about to have a fit (epileptic). He will sit infront of my husband and bark continuously. He is such a big baby and loves cuddles.

If you have a dog that pulls like this then buy a harness for starters. The answer to the problem is to introduce familiar noises whilst walking her, squeaky toys, use before, during and after the walk.

That is so helpful!! I adopted my dog who was found on the streets and he had always feared going for a walk outside. We tried to train him with a trainer but he was so unprofessional and did a lot of mistakes like aggressively putting pressure on the rope to keep the dog close to him when walking and advising me to let my dog unfed so he'd be hungry when training him to find treats more enticing! That all were outrageous to me and stopped him asap. I just want a confident and happy dog that enjoys his time as much as possible while being safe. I will definitely try this. I am wondering how it went for Ruby.. Is there a follow up video?

I will definitely try this and hope short walks and moving a few steps forward will help her

My 55lbs pit won’t walk in street. she will jump in a car and go to a park fine but she just won’t walk the streets on her own... but she will walk the streets with my other mastiff only round one block early in the morning... as soon as harness goes one she seem completely Noise sensitive, she locks up with all here weight.. your the closest video I found to the problem I have. Just want here to be happy and walk to park as I have no vehicle anymore

Dead Farmer get rid of the harness mate. It won’t help with this. A slip lead will be the most effective tool for this. Relax, don’t put to much pressure on this. Try this video in short sessions and you will be walking in no time mate.

This was working on my dog immediately...also fearful but of cars, like extreme terror.... But it was too much pressure on her throat. Yes I had the lead up high but she vomited. I ordered a herm sprenger, not a cheap knock off, it is definitely safer on their throats if fitted correctly on the back of the neck as I've observed in many cases. I'm wishing my new dog luck, I'm going to do whatever it takes so she can be free of fear and have a full life.

I neet to get him going out since we live in an apartment and we dont have a yard and he needs to start potty training. But he is afraid to go outside,he is stubborn and trying to get back, and if we pass by a house with a dog and that dog barks at us,then bam,its over,he pisses himself, start trembling and he wont walk at all....even if he sees another dog at a distance,he gets scared,i dont know what to do...

    Good night,
Thank you very much for posting this video,
I'm having a lot of troubles with my Bull Terrier, since he had a accident and had to stay one month inside my house, he's now terrified to walk in the street, and also afraid of people.
I'm trying to fight that by walking him for some time every end of the day (because of my squedule) 30min, and i'm not getting much results.
I'm very afraid that he turns agressive due to that.
I will try your way and see how it goes.
    how is Ruby doing now?

hey there, I have a 8 years old terrier dog, she is a bit afraid of thunder and firework and construction sounds, but never had issue with going outside and always was really passionate about it, but since 12-16 months ago after some days of thunder and rain she started to be afraid of going outside, she comes to yard but refuses to go out of the yard to the sidewalk and street. but when she's outside, she's really nervous and with every little sound like car door close and sounds like that, she becomes distracted and wants to go back home. it started almost a year ago and continued for a few months, the weird thing was that at the time it started, she was ok with walks in the morning but refused and was scared of walks in the afternoons and evenings, then the problem stoped for itself after we stopped taking her out for a couple of months and she was again ok with going outside fro some months, but now it has started again since a couple of months ago after a few days of thunder and rain, but now she is afraid of walks in the morning too but not as much as afternoon walks. I see that she is not as confident as before even in the home and is so conscious(I mean looks a little afraid) of some sounds in the home, like the sound of things dropping and etc. I have tried some tricks like in this video for a week now, and I don't see any improvements, actually she now even seems hesitant about getting close to the leash, something which never happened before. I tried to distract her every time a sound goes off and every time she wants to focus on the sound by commands and showing her treats or toys, and give her treats like in the video if she walks aways from home, but after we go past some point she doesn't respond to treat or distractions by toys, gets more focused on the sounds and just wants to get back home. I should mention that she is well trained by myself to a degree she uses bathroom for her business, knows a lot of tricks, obeys me 85 -95% of the times. If I say her come with me and walk her more away from home she comes and she sometimes show some sign of enjoyment and sniffing things on the way, but as more we get away from home she becomes more nervous and looks back every 30 seconds but never pulls me because I taught her not to pull, so I try not to put her on more stress and I usually go back home soon. Im sorry it got long but I don't know how to reach to you, I would really appreciate if you could give me some tips and help to make her more confident again.

He isn't going on walks in the afternoon or at night, because he associates those time of the day with fireworks. I tried this technique with him many times, but if I sit with the leash tensed and don't move until he moves the way i want, he's not moving. I tried that for 15, 30 min, 45 min and he doesn't flinch. He's usually a very stubborn dog and I don't know what to do anymore.
