I had the x100v. Can’t even remember why I got rid of it BUT love my GR111x. I did have GR111 but the 40mm focal length makes life much easier. Go Ricoh…and like you say good luck to Fujifilm 🎉

Sold my GRIII. Miss the built in flash of the GRII. Honestly for a pocket cam, I just run around with a Canon S90 digicam. CCD sensor. All the vibes. Works perfect for what I need it for. Ordered the X100VI to try out vs my X100F. X100 is great when you want to feel like you’re making photographs instead of taking snaps.

I am a former Fuji shooter. I never liked the 100X ergonomics. The Ricoh has its own quirks too but after shooting with the GRIIIX for a few hours, I got really comfortable with the form factor. Image quality wise, colors in particular Ricoh is the hands down winner for me. And the lens is insanely sharp. GRIIIX is the perfect street camera. What's the catch then, short battery life. The battery only lasted for about 150 shots. You need a few extra batteries for a daylong shoot.

I have owned two GRIIIx and both were plagued by dust on sensor. Each one had a third party lens cap and a genuine Ricoh pouch and every precaution was taken to prevent dust ingress. The second camera showed dust on the sensor within 3 days and less than 50 shutter actuations. I sent it back to Ricoh and had it repaired under warranty (quite a performance!), had to wait 5 weeks, and when it finally was returned, I traded it and will never buy another.

What the heck are you doing with your camera? There plenty out there using their gr for like a few years and never had problems with dust

  • @Chromatomic

This is still my dilemma, I have an X100VI preorder and in general I prefer the X100 styling, controls, menus and film sims, but don't need the high megapixels or IBIS and I have other Fujifilm cameras but the camera I don't have on me, isn't really doing anything and the portability and size of the Ricoh is unmatched if I want something to carry around for any occasion.

  • @Purplefoxdl
    @Purplefoxdl 6 місяців тому +1

I agree, it's the size that makes the Ricoh fantastic ! The X100 is a tank in comparison! I also had a X70 and the difference in a pocket is noticeable.
But I'm a little afraid of leaving it in a pants pocket without any protection.
Have you ever had any problems? With dust?
For me the major evolution would be a more solid/waterproof device but I don't know how that is possible with this small format.

    • @LukeTaylorPhotography
      @LukeTaylorPhotography  6 місяців тому

The closest camera I've tried is the Sony x100 but that is a 1 inch sensor. I've never tried the x70.

    Great video. Thanks.,
I have the GR III and I love it. Brilliant camera. I was thinking about getting the GR IIIx or the X100vi. I decided to order the x100vi for one main reason. Weatherproof. I have 18k images on my GR III, and I also have dust on my sensor or internal lens. I have to deal with the dust if I shoot with aperture > 5.6.
I may regret the size increase, but I'm excited about the megapixel increase and weatherproofing.
    Happy shooting. 👍

I have a Sony X100m3, it's a terrific little camera. It's beaten up a bit over the years, but it just keeps on ticking. It is slow starting and the focus is very slow. In my old age I have no patience or time for that kind of performance. I will not get the mk6 due to price/performance, especially as the GR is smaller and I can imitate the expensive X100vi with a weatherproof OM5 and my tiny Lumix 14mm F2.5 lens for a lot less money. Plus, it fits in with all my Olympus/OM great. Like Luke, I'm waiting for the Pen F12, if OM can ever get off its ass. My other choice in the waiting game is the GR4. The hint of its imminent arrival was leaked by none other than the GR's designer. Given where I live, if it's not weatherproof, it's a no-go. So I'm sitting on my hands but soon, like before my next trip in a few months, I'll pull the trigger for a camera based on above.

What I have to say I still hold to and could add that I use my Lumix lens on my wife's ancient Em10-mk2, which is a tiny body and takes terrific photos. Any raw file deficiency can be fixed with either ON1 or LrC.

I was able to get a black x100v last year for retail. I loved the camera, but I wished it was more compact. I didn’t find myself carrying it as much as I would have wanted to. I live in Texas it gets too hot to EDC slings. I sold my x100v to my local camera store. Im looking at purchasing the x100vi next, however the more I look at Ricoh the more I want to buy it.

I shoot street my x100v was a great camera. However when shooting quickly or from the hip I never knew where the Fuji was going to focus. Ricoh snap focus is similar to range/distance focusing on a film camera. This setup works best for me

Fuji just sucks at the "wide" af settings (Yes even with the X100VI and yes I have it), when you let the camera decide the focus area. It's amazing how much better the Sony A7iii is for example, or even de RX100 V, considering they're 6/8 years older. For Fuji X100V/VI single point / zone focus is the way it go it seems.

  • @mikemorgan7009

I agree with your well assessment. I have used an X100T since 2014. Excellent camera then and still is. But, I am tempted to buy the new Fuji model because it's clearly a much better camera on paper. But there's a problem ... last year I got a GR3X. Logic and experience says I might regret upgrading to the X100VI because I can still get good images with my X100T, and besides, I hardly use it any more because my GR3x is carry every day, even without an EVF, no 40mp and all the other improvements in a new Fuji. Off topic but It's going to be interesting to watch shipping times increase for the new Fuji. From what I read, orders are now off the charts and "experts" predict China is going to be hard pressed to produce enough to make it reasonably available to retailers at its listed price. I hope I'm wrong here because I'd like the option to order a new X100VI and expect delivery quickly . In sum, I really enjoy your videos. Thanks.

Great video 😉 I am a user of the RicohGRIII and soon the x100VI. But I keep both because I find them “complementary”. The RicohGRIII for pocket size, stealth, and having the most immersive photos... There is no better (I think). The x100VI for the "user experience", with the viewfinder, the flip screen, the look, the film simulations... I am a street photographer, I also do POVs, and I think both can work well together. 'hear 😉 thank you for this video 👍 but if I had to choose just one... The choice would certainly be difficult

The x100 series is pocketable. It's not a lie. Just not pocketable for pants.
However, It fits in most of my jacket/coats and i usually wear size small/medium clothing. It's precisely b/c it fits in most of my jackets, coats and hoodies that i bring it pretty much everwhere i go nowdays. And no i don't mean giant winter coats.. but like slim bomber jackets.

It would have been super helpful (and frankly, obvious) to have a clip where you show pocketing the Ricoh vs the Fuji. Talk is not better than pictures. But having had earlier X100's I can attest that it is only pocketable in a big jacket, vest, or if you wear those saggy pants that show your butt. Which I don't.

  • @gainde1137

Ricoh GR is a compact camera and good alternative to a smartphone. Fuji X100VI is an entry level DSLM camera (e.g. Canon R50) and NOT a compact camera.

If you go out for a non-photography reason and think that you might take photos if you see something interesting, a true pocketable camera is what you need. But if the intention is a photowalk... then the camera should not be in your pocket. So, bring the right camera.

Honestly, these two just don't compare outside a similar sensor and lens size.
If you love the X100 workflow, you probably don't like the GRIII
If you love an even more compact camera that looks like your average consumer point and shoot (which is a great feature for things like restaurants) then you probably don't like the X100VI.

Just took my GRiiiX out for a walk. It was a sunny day and I couldn’t frame my images because of glare. It was horrible. I pointed and hoped for the best.
The camera doesn’t focus. I’ve reset the camera to the manufacturer’s original settings with no improvement. I have the camera set up for snap focus and touch to focus and shoot. Both are out of focus. I appreciate a camera that focuses.
Portablity is the main reason to own the GRiii. Yes, it is small and light. It simply isn’t performant. I need a camera that can focus. Thus I have preordered the Fuji X100VI.

Ok the Ricoh can fit in a pocket. This is hardly the case with any X100 unless one has big pockets. A smartphone is even more pocketable and takes photographs... and it allows one to phone, text, email...;o) so is this the argument for a smartphone? Because other than that the X100-6 is a superior camera. So are we looking for a better camera or a more pocketable one in which case most smartphones will beat the Ricoh ;o)
[PS: no integrated viewfinder (which equates a smartphone) has been the one fault that has always kept me away from the Ricoh). I am more of photographic tool guy and a pocket one! ;o)
