This is a very useful video. I have an identical fan with lights. My lights stopped working 4 day’s ago, just couldn’t imagine what the problem was. I am a widow who had a husband who could fix anything and he did so I never had to call a repairman . I remembered my granddaughter commenting recently how you could go to you tube and find instructions for just about every repair. Glad I took her advice, now I’m waiting for one of my grandkids to follow your instructions and I get to keep my credit card in my wallet 😊. Thanks

My Hunter Douglas ceiling fan light has been out for almost a year. I have been waiting for this person and that person to come through and take a look at it. I watched your video 3 times. Hit Home Depot and fixed the issue exactly how you described. You're the man!

Very clear demonstration of what to do. Thank you!
Initially I had trouble finding my limiter... it was buried within other wires. Quick and simple fix.
One suggestion, before turning power off, and before cutting any wires, it's even easier if you unplug the "white connector" that attaches the entire "light housing" to the fan, once unplugged, the light housing is detached from any electricity and makes finding the limiter, cutting, and splicing wires easier. It's a simple plug. Thanks for sharing... wouldn't have done it without your guidance.

Thank you so much for this video! We’ve been living with a very dim living room in the evenings for over six months (because the fan lights stop working completely). I finally had enough and bought a new light kit. I actually watched this video to get an idea of what to expect when I installed the kit, but you taught me about this possible underlying issue. After installing the kit and trying every other fix my husband and I could think of (including buying a new light switch for the wall), I tried this. Boom! Let there be light!

Great video! My wife has been begging me for months to get a new light assembly for our fan. I looked, but couldn't find one I liked and promptly forgot about it. She mentioned it again today (and dozens of times prior) and it got me looking. I was about to drop 80 bucks on one, then just thought I'd try to research to see if it was fixable. I watched your very clear video and 10 minutes later had a perfectly-working light. Thanks so much!

Thank you for taking the time to do this! I had a hunch it was a regulator of sorts, just like they do with our water. I did it without having to cut any wires or turn off any breakers. I disconnected the unit and then disconnected the regulator and was able to reconnect the wires by simply plugging them into each other. (Hope that makes sense) THANKS AGAIN!!!

Thanks for saving me the time to troubleshoot. For anyone who sees this, mine was slightly different. It was put together with wire nuts, so I didn't have to cut or strip wires...just removed nuts and component. Then used one of the nuts to bring the two power wires together. Also, I used the disconnect connector shown there to remove the light piece and work on a table.

Awesome video and saved me replacing the fan because Hunter no longer makes the light kit for the model of my ceiling fan. Agree with others in this thread that you don't have to cut any wires. Simply disconnect the regulator at the two plugs, remove the regulator, and then snap the open plugs together and voila!

Dude, I was just about to run out and buy another ceiling fan. I assumed that it was a component that went bad, since my wife told me she heard a pop when she flipped the switch. Anyways, I was looking them over and decided, "well, it's not worth attempting to order/replace parts. As luck would have it, we had something come up this morning and couldn't go out when we wanted to look for another fan. In the meantime, I started wondering if anyone else might have had this problem before and made note of it on UA-cam. Found your video in like 5 seconds. It took me all of a 5 minutes to remove the part. Mine was already installed with two wire nuts bridging the two wires. I just removed the component and connected the wires and we're back in business. Thanks a bunch for the video - was most helpful and saved me a $150 or so.

Worked out well, thanks a bunch! Different model that has two black wires connected with the pink wire of the regulator with wire nuts. Even easier on my Hunter model! Great video, thanks again!

I also have this 3-bulb assembly and I have a few notes: 1. The current indicator 'pen' was detecting current when there were no bulbs, but stopped reading when there were any bulbs installed. 2. Disconnecting the large harness connector makes this job a lot easier since you can take the entire assembly off and work on it on a table. 3. The infamous voltage regulator was well hidden inside a jumble cables where the cables start. I had to cut off a ziptie to get to it. 4. I carefully scraped each bulb socket with a small file so that the center contacts of the sockets were shiny. Years of poor contact (light flickering) had created some type of buildup that would make the bulb center contacts pretty bad so there's a chance it would not have worked even after removing the regulator. Good luck! The fix worked for me!

I have the same fan with the same problem. I was able to just use the quick disconnects and plug those together and didn't need to strip any wires. So it's a quick fix and no parts needed and only need a screw driver to get the housing off. That's it. I put in LED bulbs too to make sure I don't use too much power. But they work great now. Thanks for your video.

Great video and was the exact fix I needed. Another suggestion (if made previously, I apologize ... I didn't read through all the comments) ... instead of cutting and splicing, you can just disconnect the pink wire at 2 easy connection points and then plug the black wire into the blue wire. Plastic easy connections fit perfectly! Agree with one previous comment (Jd Cisz), if you unplug the large white connector "box", the removal of the light housing makes the fix even easier. Thanks to all involved in helping this non-handyman actually fix something for once!

After disconnecting the pink regulator, I connected the blue and black wires together using their quick connects. They are male/female so they fit right together. I didn't remove the quick connects on the blue and black wires, strip them then tie them back together using a wire nut.

Thanks! My problem was basically the same, though the limiter box was much bigger (PL-190C). Quick note: without any light bulbs plugged in everything appeared to work correctly using the voltage tester, the limiter only started blocking voltage with a bulb in the socket.

  • @joegekko

Thanks for this! Perfect fix for my fan. Apparently the limiter is only there to prevent the user from putting in lights of too high a wattage (an efficiency measure, not a safety measure) so as long as you don't go nuts you shouldn't experience any decreased life from your bulbs after pulling it.

As far as I could tell, the wires going down to the light didn’t actually go to the black box. The only thing in between the light and the wires coming through the ceiling was the little white box shown in this video.
So I cut it out and put the two wires back together. Like magic the light worked again. So I’m glad I followed the instructions in this video. Thanks for the help!

The device you replaced is not a regulator, it is most likely what is known as a thermal fuse, thermal cutoff, or thermal cutoff fuse. This type of device will 'open' or 'break' the path of current to the lamps if the ambient temperature exceeds the rating of the thermal cutoff fuse. Typical opening temperature is 100C to 160C. Other ratings are possible. You can find these devices in many places such as ebay and/or amazon. Bypassing these (as shown in the video) will allow the lamps to function, however the thermal protection will be gone. Once the thermal fuse opens (due to high local temperature) the electrical path will not reclose when it cools. It only functions once, similar to a normal electrical fuse which also only functions once to provide protection. If it operates it has served its purpose by reacting to local overheating. It should be replaced to bring the overall system back to normal. Again, bypassing it means you move forward at your own risk. I've also seen these type devices in the under-dash heater blower assembly in cars. In this application it also provides protection from overheating for several of the fan speeds.

The piece is a limiter. Mine was Y59 R 130C. This was a good hack. Saved me 50.00 for a new light kit versus 10.00 for the limiter, if I decide to replace it. Did anyone have issues with lights burning out quicker? I still use incandescent, even though they are hard to find. Good job sir.

Looks great, and with a brighter bulb installed that’s all the light you need. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxWF88GpljEn-0o34vtLFazEQ5h5Q33SjU As far as ease of installation- this was my first ceiling fan and it took about 3 hours because I had no idea what I was doing and also it’s helpful to have a second set of hands and a magnetic drill bit. Works great.
