There is a common issue with Hunter (and possibly other) ceiling fans. There is a government required regulator in the fan that malfunctions and causes the lights not to work. This video shows how to bypass this regulator.
Disclaimer: I recommend you replace, not remove the regulator as it could cause a fire.

An excellent video with clear explanation and details - Just followed the steps and got the lights back. Saved me a new fan.
That’s great! I’m glad it worked for you too!
Man thanks I was about to go buy a new ceiling fan and assumed it was something simple. Took the regulator out and worked and I’m definitely not putting high wattage bulbs in it. Thank you
That’s great! I’m glad it worked for you!
Great explanation of the cause and the repair for this particular problem. Easy to follow and straight to the point. You didn't go into too much detail as to become boring. Thanks.
I’m glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for this. I simply took out the voltage regulator and clipped the two remaining wires together and it works again!
Nice!
man worked like a charm. Thank you!!!
Great! I’m glad it helped you out too!
Thank you- I didn’t realize they had a voltage regulator & that was the whole issue! 😂
Yep!
thanks for this. Exactly the issue I was having
That’s great!
*Works great **Fastly.Cool** in our Oklahoma heat !*
Which part?
well done 👍
Thanks!
Good job thanks
You’re welcome!
Loved this video. What do you do when a solid lamp shade won't stay screwed? I have Hunter. I have the fan you show on your original image on this video.
Are the threads stripped? If not, use blue LocTite.
@@TightWadDIY No not stripped. Thank you.
new home owner, got this hunter fan and the bulbs aren't working, driving me mad. But at least I have a lead on why it may not be working. .. THANK YOU
You’re welcome!
Thanks It worked.
That’s great!
I'm going to try this!!! Thank you!
You can do it!
Me too. Just encountered my first finicky ceiling fan, same problem. Hope this works (as much as I hate turning off power at the breaker, such a pain...)
@@kevinericsnell4092 Let me know if it doesn’t work! It’s worked for everyone who has reported back.
I removed the wattage regulator (Y59 B 120C) several months ago and now the lights again are not working. Any suggestions?
Check your connections. Maybe one came loose.
What if your wires are purple, pink, Grey and brown? Nog sure if the black box in my fan is the regulator or just part of the fan.
I can’t say for sure. Did you look up your specific model?
Could this also be the reason the lights flickered and now they just stay really dim
I installed a new Hunter fan. The fan worked but not the lights. When I wired it differently, the lights worked but not the fan. This is a LED fan so there's no wattage regulator or receiver to bypass. Here's how I fixed it. Follow original instructions the fan. I had an additional red wire coming out of my ceiling. I used the RED ceiling wire INSTEAD of the BLACK ceiling wire to connect to the black receiver wire. Then I capped off the BLACK ceiling wire alone. Followed all other connecting instructions. After 10 hours of trial & error and speaking with Hunter directly, problem solved. Hunter thought it was a bad motor engine or bad receiver. Problem finally solved.
I’m glad you were able to get it working!
When you say "higher wattage bulbs" (around 5:35), you're meaning incandescent that are higher than recommended by the documentation of the fan? LEDs, being much lower wattage, wouldnt cause a problem, correct?
That’s correct.
@@TightWadDIYI opened up the fixture and there's no wattage regulator. There's a capacitor, but it isn't inline with the fixture.
@@TightWadDIYBTW, it's a HUNTER 23682 60" Grand Lodge Ceiling Fan
😊
What if you have power to the multi chain switch for fan speed problem. The hunter fan will not increase speed at highest setting.
What if the lights work but the fan doesn’t? Do you have a video for that problem?
That sounds like an issue with the speed control switch to me.
Sorry I don’t. It could be a wall switch issue though if you have two switches.
That a hunter westminster ceiling fan
Candykitten: yeah it is
Yep.
Where can I contact you, man? I love your video and I want to collaborate with you.

Easier fix: clip the black, red, white wires at the wattage regulator, strip the black and red wires, use one wire nut to connect the black and red, use a second wire nut to cap the unstripped white. No need to fiddle with the other wire nuts or wires.
Thanks.
Hard to see what you're doing with your hands in the way. Please tell me where does the red wire go? Not sure if you said they all go together or not. I can't get the lights to turn off!
Sorry. The camera angle was really bad. The red wire was just for the regulator on mine and isn’t used once you remove the regulator. Basically you join the black wire from the switch directly to the cluster of other black wires. You then clip the white wire from the regulator, strip it, and add it to the cluster of white wires.
@@TightWadDIY Thank you so much for replying back. I think we might have different Hunter Fans. I put the blacks altogether, including the red wire, because after I cut the 3 wires the red one was connected to the inside bottom of the pull chain that turns the light on or off. The white was in the cluster of the other whites, so I just capped that one off. (that might be something I am not doing right) I can get the lights and fan to power on and light up, only problem is the lights will not turn off from the pull chain. That is the only way to turn the lights on, no remote or wall switch.
@@royloporto5489 Do you have one black wire going to and coming from the switch on the fixture? That switch just opens or closes the circuit for the lights. It’s usually a black wire which can be confusing since there are so many. The other black wires typically go to each of the bulbs so they need to be connected to the wire coming FROM the switch.
How about a kendal fan with the same issue, the light flutters , but wont stay on, the fan works perfectly! Ken
Probably a similar issue. I haven’t worked on those.
possibly issue at the switch
Mine is just the opposite. Lights work but fan won't. Please do a video on this problem
I can’t film it because these fans aren’t in my own home. However, there is a black capacitor that controls the fan that can go bad. If you can locate it, order a new one with the same numbers then cut it out and splice the wires to the new one.
@@TightWadDIY okay. Thank you
Where can I find a replacement? I searched amazon, eBay, and Google. I could r find one? Help. 😔
I didn’t replace these. Just removed and direct wired them.
Great info but the camera angle wasn't great, your hands blocked a lot of the video.
I know. Sorry about that. I was videoing in a friends home so I was working quickly and it’s also hard to get a camera on a mount that high.
The video title says "Hampton Bay" but you’re working on a Hunter.
Thanks. I fixed it.
I'm installing led bulbs that use less than 8watts each less than the 40 watts the light calls fir
Nice choice.
I have similar issue. 2 of 4 light in fan don't work
Id try this bypass.
I know that you mean well, but your hands, etc, are constantly blocking what you are describing.
Sorry. It’s really hard to get good angles because it’s so high. I tried to explain with my words as good as I could.
How to make the light work
That’s what I show in the video.
Shut power off to fan at wall switch first.
Yes. That was mentioned at about 40 seconds.
@@TightWadDIY Sorry I missed it. will try to be more astute.
Hunter
Yes
They use incandescent bulbs?!?!
This is an older video and yes, they do.
Unplug then repair on a table!
That’s a lot of work! This is an easy repair.
Wtf, they use incandescent bulbs?!?!
You can’t buy them anymore but you can use them if you still have them.
@@TightWadDIY Ceiling fan
Your hands were blocking the whole procedure - - >>
Sorry. Hard to get a good camera angle by the ceiling. Thats why I have explicit verbal instructions and showed the before and after shots.
I have an issue on a new install where the lights only work if the fan is running. No way to only have the lights on with fan off. Is this normal for Hunter?
Shouldn’t be.
