How to kill squash vine borer with BT
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- This video shows how to use BT (bacillus thuringiensis) to kill squash vine borer inside the stems of a squash plant without harming the squash plant. I'm using a syringe to inject BT into the stem of the affected plant just above the entry hole of the squash vine borer. As the squash vine borer continues to feed on the inside of the plant the squash vine borer also feeds on BT which ultimately kills the squash vine borer and greaters the chance of the squash plant living. #shorts #shortvideo #short #gardening #garden #growingoutthebox #squashvineborer

My dude, you are a hitman for garden pests.
LOL.... Those black boxes serve more than 1 purpose as it is obvious that you know.
I got hit by tht big 2 yrs ago and when I looked it up, I had learned tht if you see it count your plant dead. 13 squash plants all died because of the lack of education tht was out there. Thank you for this
This is why I love this channel. You give great tips and always such a positive vibe. Thank you so much.
I appreciate that! That is what makes it worthwhile.
And so peaceful 😏
You got a whole Squash vine borer Kit lol Awesome
Yeah I do... lol.🤓 Have to be ready, right?

I appreciate how you help us battle our garden invaders! Thanks!
Glad to help. Know that in some way shape or form we have the same battles. I love sharing what works for me. Thank you for your comment.
Another video filled with encouragement. TFS
We are learning together Bro. Please be encouraged.
You have it figured out nice!
I lost all my plants the 1st year so I at least wanted to see if I could make it a whole season without losing a plant. Now we are getting fruit this year. TFW
I am so glad I found your channel. You make gardening digestible.
So nice of you and I hope so because we are all trying to grow a lil something that we can eat.lol
Thank you for the great tips.
You are so welcome! I hope it helps and it did for me.
1st time growing yellow squash this year. Unfortunately, I had to uproot one of my two plants. 3 vine borers inside. Didn’t know about using the spices. Will try that in future if need be. Thanks for sharing!
That’s why we share experiences in the garden community. It should not be assumed that everyone knows how to handle every situation in their garden. We learn from each other.

I just pulled 2 plants. Ordering BT right now. Thanks for putting the link in the pinned comment. That makes it so much simpler to order.
Please let me know how it works out for you.
Please do some research on BT before you use it. It's been linked to several health problems.
@@Oldfarmlady BT Bacillus thuringiensis is a natural soil-dwelling bacterium that is already in your soil. It produces a toxin that kills certain insects. You want to be a bit more specific.
You are so well organized! And I love your voice too. You should cover more details on that kit you put together and how exactly you did it. Maybe even sell them! Keep at it, I think your channel is going to be big.
The channel is starting to grow. I just started last year and it is people such as yourself that's making it possible. Very kind words that I try to compliment by the care I attempt to put into my content. Gardening is nothing new, it's just that I hope to bring a different style of delivery. Introducing people to me for the first time. That's "Growing Out The Box".
Wow! You should definitely sell those kits! I would order one for sure! Thank you for the information!
Seems to be a lot of interest but it doesn’t feel right charging for something that most of us have around the house anyway. That’s really why I posted it.
@@growingoutthebox I understand how you feel however I don't have everything in that box, around my house.
I would be glad to pay you to make one for me. I love how it is all in one orderly place!
You are always on time and so encouraging the way you deliver your narrative.
We learn together. When ever something works for me I am always excited to share. TFW
Only watched a few videos bit your voice is so soothing and theres so much good info!
Thank you for the compliments and thanks for stopping in! 😊
Thank you so much. I guess you might say that’s my invitation for you to join me for a relaxing time in the garden. Take your shoes off and I welcome you into my personal space. I hope you will hangout with me more often.
Today is the first time I seen your video(s). Extremely excited as a new gardener. Just in time & not too much information per video. I am taking notes as I binge watch. Your calming voice is encouraging as I witness God’s daily miracles. Thank you!
I am so glad that you found the channel and thank you for watching more of the content. Any way I can assist you in growing please don’t hesitate to ask.
Thanks for this video

Nawh Roro.... lol.... Just like trying different stuff and when it works for me I like to share.
I love your videos. They are always filled with great information and detail explanations. I’m gonna have to prepare myself a black box real soon. I have been planting out my squash and want to be prepared for those pests this year when they show up.
I thank you Neecee. I try to explain things the way I want it explained to me. I'm a visual learner so I make videos for again.... People like me.

Good idea! I also have been just covering the plant stems that have SVB with lots of dirt. One of my plants infected came back from the dead and is producing squash again.
That's a great tip as squash will take root.
Outstanding!
You know in an action movie when the protagonist is assembling their gear? This is the same. This man is a specialist, you better not mess with his squash.

Good morning Ms Shirley. Hope all is well with you. Thanks for always being so supportive. I really do appreciate it.
Great information.. where did you get that box from
Something I put together because my wife has a habit of putting things away and I can never find them afterwards. This was I know exactly where things are🥴

thats awesome - it would be cool to sell little kits like that for bugs :)
Huuuummmmmmm🤔 You are not the 1st to say that.
😂 i love it. I hate vine borers.
Don’t we al l. I’m trying some prevention techniques so hang on I’m LL K ł
Did you find that kit online? It looks like everything is tucked in like it was sold as a set.
I put the kit together. I have so much mess for different projects it's the only way I know why I purchased it in the first place.lol. I have to keep things together or I will end up buying the same thing again and again. I have had several people ask about selling the kits. I only started my channel last year and just got monetized so I am starting to build up inventory for next year starting with my elephant garlic.

Very nice!
Your correct in getting to this quickly.

What about that old man using 2 inch strips of foil covering about up 5 inches of the plant? Can’t think of his name now.
Vine bowers don't just lay eggs on the stems. They also lay on the leaves as well.
Amazing!!
Trying to get caught up on messages. Thanks so much for taking time from your day to comment. That means a lot.
Would it be beneficial to do this ahead of damage like a preventative?? Or only do this when i suspect a problem (wilting and such)
It can be done as a preventative. Daily inspections is your greatest defense and one of the reasons I grow vertical. Generally, it takes about 2 weeks for the borer to have done irreversible damage. Growing virtual allows you to see more. Any sign on a leaf, remove it. The plant grows so fast it will have no effect at all. You can also grow as a vine keeping the stalk covered in heavy mulch which will encourage more rooting that will help keep the plant stronger in case of attack. I personally only use it if I suspect an attack.
I tried summer squash in my first garden attempt… I was not prepared for pests at all. I was very disappointed once I noticed them….
Sorry to hear that but you are right. Squash is rough at times to grow. I'd like to eventually have a outdoor grow room for plants like squash.
How'd you learn stuff like this?
I’m a bit ocdish 😂 lol. It’s hard for me to leave things alone if I don’t get my desired results. Or at least close.
OMG! If I was as neat and tidy as you are my husband would marry me all over again!
LOL... I'm sure he loves you just the way you are.
Hi, you should make a video on how to make the black box. It will probably get lots of views. People will still want to buy it from you when and if you sell them because people like to watch DIYs but less people actually follow through and do DIY. So the how to video is actually a commercial for your for sale black boxes.
I need someone like you on my team Kim. I just started this channel last year and this year people seem to be finding it. I really appreciate your vote of confidence. The channel is a bit different than the norm and the support has been amazing. Please hit the notification. It’s people like yourself that I would love to have as super fans only I would call it something more personal. Any ideas?
@@growingoutthebox off the top of my head, I would ask for more engagement. An example would be - let people know that you’ve been get so many messages asking about buying that kit. Ask if people would comment on if they’d buy it or rather learn how to diy it? Ask what other kits they would like to buy or build on their own. Have a This “Channel is for you” video asking people what people are having the most challenges with in their garden. Another video to people who haven’t started a grade yet, ask them to comment on what’s holding them back? What is their biggest fear? In other words, let your videos and comment section help provide content people want. Go back over your videos to see the most popular and the ones with the most comments.
@@kimariokiji Great input! Do you have a garden?
I just subbed so I can find you
@@growingoutthebox I don’t at the moment. My first attempt was not wildly successful - harvested about 8 delicious tomatoes that ended up costing about 12 dollars each 😆 I won’t be able to devote the time to a garden until the end of this year/early 2024.
I wished I knew about this last year. I didn't grow it this year because I barely got any squash before they killed it. 😢
Hopefully next year is better for you 😊
It's not too late. I just planted more squash.
@@growingoutthebox I didn't know that....I am learning a lot from your videos. Thank you.
Is BT not poisonous?
BT Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally occurring soil bacteria. No it’s not poisonous. It produces a delta endotoxins protein that causes a number of leaf chewing targeted pest to stop eating and breading.
I have a terrible infestation and have given up for this season. So disappointing!
When they come they come in droves. Sorry to hear that.I have found 5 this week. You have to check every day.
I’m new to gardening and need help , I don’t understand why my squash is dying. How do I get that what you’re doing to the squash because I think that’s what happened. Are you having classes I’m in zone 9A Houston, Texas.
All you have to do is ask and I will do my best to come up with an answer. With squash vine borers, by the time you see your plants withering they have been at work for at least two weeks. If the plant has branched off cut the stem off of the affected branch. The plant is no longer able to uptake water so it will start looking as it is needs water even after you have watered it.
Not the black box ☑️
Yeah, that black box! 🤫
Okay scientist.
Just trying to survive these insects. Appreciate you coming through. Finally got me some hummingbird feeders and a few nest. I think you're going to like this video. Some interesting facts about the hummingbird that makes since to attract them to the garden. Stay tuned.
Dang I was right there with you till the bt injection. That stuff is nasty. Why would you put it in a food plant. That stuff is horrible. BT corn is one of the biggest reasons monsanto went under and got bought out by Bayer.
lol…. BT stands for bacillus thuringiensis. It’s a soil-dwelling bacteria that is already in your soil. All soil. It acts as a natural barrier against certain insects for plants.
It produces proteins that are toxic to some insect. These proteins are not toxic to humans because we cannot activate them. It breaks down quickly in sunlight, becoming ineffective.
Do you sell these kits ?
I may in the future because I have been getting a lot of those kind of questions Steph. How is your garden doing?
@@growingoutthebox well this is my first year actually doing pumpkins and watermelon‘s etc. so it’s all new to me so I’ve been taking all the tips I can get! I accidentally grew about 20 of each of those lol so at least I got too many it’s just hard to let go lol like literally I don’t wanna let these babies go, but I know I can’t grow 20 of each in my mini garden 🪴

What the heck. Is this poison? Is there a more simple way?
BT is already in your soil. It's a good bacteria that helps protect your plants naturally. Just inject it into the core of the plant above where you see the vine borer has entered. It really is that simple.
