  • This video lesson is about the trombone embouchure, which simply means, the formation of your mouth when you’re playing the trombone.
It’s very important to get this right from the beginning, as Incorrect technique and bad habits can cause you some big problems and long-term difficulties.

Hey paul, thanks for posting all of your educational videos. I’ve been playing the French Horn for a few years now but i’ve decided to start learning the trombone so that I can be in my highschool’s jazz band, and it wouldn’t be possible for me to learn it without your videos!!

Thank you, Paul. This is my first visit to your channel, and I've learned so much already. I'm a wannabe trombone player. I currently play the Blues Harmonica. Been doing that for 35 years. I found a King Liberty 2-B in a Thrift Store. So much to learn

Thanks, Paul. Needed this. Recently picked up the trombone again after a very long hiatus. the journey to get back into shape is indeed long but I am intent on faithfully and daily doing these exercises to get my chops back into shape.

I started out on the trombone when I was in 5th grade and I'm 62 now. Our band leader was very knowledgeable and told us the same things you're saying here. I wish I would've been more mature & paid attention. I've made up my mind to be a trombone player so I'm starting with this basic; embouchure. I want to play my instrument in church but I have a ways to go before I can do that. Thanks for the help Paul!

It is now late in my life and my band “teacher” was a violinist so embouchure was not even talked about. Your lessons are very useful as I pick up the trombone again. Rented a trombone to see if I can start again with more insight gained from your videos. Thank you!

Thanks. I’ve been playing for 4 years. I started to become a great player but took a big break. I sort of lost it, but you reminded me I need to use all the muscles, not just the corners specifically. Thanks. Hope all is well

I've seen a couple of videos from you because I have music at school and I have to learn how to play trombone, and they are pretty good and straightforward.
Keep doing the good work, man❤

I watched the masterclass. I think it will help me a lot. Thank you!. I stopped playing after High School over 40 years ago. I got serious again a couple of years ago and was lucky enough to find a fantastic teacher. I have been struggling with my tone quality so I think this will help.

I played as a grade school child but quit. I picked it back up about 2 weeks ago & now starting to develop proper emboucher. Thank you for this video; it’s extremely helpful! I know I have a long way to go but I’m gonna be a trombone player even if it kills me🙂.

Thank you for making this video! I was never taught how to set my embouchure and have been trying my best to improve it on my own. I’ve gathered that corners should be set but I’ve also heard that you should keep your chin flat. Will keeping my chin flat help me get better control over my instrument?

Would you recommend a heritage 2AL mouthpiece for bass trombone playing?

  • @reggiem1668

Hi Paul. I appreciate the tips! I am a trumpet player so I picked up a nice Reynolds Bb valve trombone because I’m too old (or lazy) to learn slide positions! :) However, I’m sure everything you had to say about embouchure will still apply!? My trombone came with a 12 C mouthpiece. I’m finding I’m having trouble getting clear, consistent tone in the middle C range. I’m sure it’s mainly due to the difference in mouthpiece sizes and, since I don’t play my trumpet that often anymore, lack of muscle tone but would you recommend a different mouthpiece in my situation? Thanks!

Is there any way we can meet up on a zoom call or something and you could help me improve my trombone playing. Keep in mind im a middle schooler not a pro but im determined to get better and I practice for many hours every day.

Please have your mouth facing the camera! Your trombone blocked your face! Same with buzzing. You used your right hand to hold the mouthpiece and so we couldn't actually see your mouth.
