Haha! Contrary to popular belief, Steve Kerr is not my dad. Thanks for all the comments and support. Some whiskers are beginning to show and I've bought a hat! Yours, The beardless drummer x @mr2sticks
Am I the only one who thinks npr tiny desk should make a compilation vinyl album from some of the best performances? The sound on some of these are amazing!
So many great ones. And there is something about that room or recording-it’s got a great sound. Lyle Lovett, the Hold Steady, Mac Miller - prime exhibits. Thumdercat’s bass on Mac’s is crazy good.
I dont think its mixed live but that is perfectness in recording a full set live band! drums are on point (that snare tho... amazin) everything has its place in the mix and is soo clear. Thanks guys and gals! Made my day!!
Alex Clare is such an underrated singer. I think that electronic sound on their studio records turned into a boundary for his amazing voice, not too many took him seriously because of it. This acoustic, intimate sound fits waaaaay better with his voice and style.
I would like to hear too close done in this style would be so much better but wouldn't have been the hit at the time dub step sound was popular for 1 second it is a shame because other then that too close was a really good song great lyrics.
he is amazing, i saw him live in Manchester UK, years back.. I made him laugh with a cheesy shout out. :D he seems like such nice down to earth guy too, i wish he would come back to perform in Manchester again!!
He still crushes it every time with Too Close on his concerts! He tends to play it with only his acoustic guitar and its is MIND BLOWING how good his voice is live!
Like a caterpillar becomes a butterfly or a Lion develops its mighty roar this drummer will soon acquire his majestic beard....he is 2 gigs away from completion 😁👍
When the temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, the group huddles around the drummer😄..."Sound amazing, aspirational, I like to sing along." Thankyou!
I know everyone is commenting about the beards/hats, but Alex and the man in the light blue shirt (Zalman Yanover, I believe) are Orthodox Jewish. As for the other men, I assume they are just hipsters.
they all r. the reason his record company (universal) left him is as he missed too many oppurtunities due to jewish holidays. the finale straw came when he turned down a bbc1 lounge oppurtuninty as it was on the second day of the jewish festivle of Sukkot. they are not allowed on any electronics and not allwoed to do any work on jewish holidays.
Never heard of this guy and was totally blown away by these songs. Absolutely awesome. Went and looked up his previous albums and I can't even pretend to mask my dismay at the overproduced dance crap that he put out previously. My heart was totally shocked and shattered. The new album sounded somewhat closer to this, but still too much electronica for what can sound like what is presented here, perfect bluesy r&b with an awesome singer and a band that sounds great. Such a disappointment to not find more of it in his past tho.
Totally agree. His voice fits much better with this format rather than overproduced dance/D&B style on his studio records. This is a better approach to his talent.
One of the most underrated musicians of our generation

Give a thumbs up to the sound engineers at NPR who always do such a great job of live mixing. The guys and girls behind the scenes!
Lukelegs indeed!

That first song blew my teeny little mind. That groove is perfect
I’ve rekindled my love for Alex haven’t really listened to him since his song too close but holy crap I’m so happy I came back to him so good
Long waited from me I must say. I love Alex
I love Alex Clare’s voice.❤️
Where’s the drummer’s beard?
Maybe it's because he has all the hair on top of his head so he doesn't need to compensate.
I'm offended, I'm calling the FBI
thrillscience I was thinking the same thing lol
Lost it at the war.
He's just continuing the Frank Beard tradition
Change of plan 'open my eyes' is also beautiful - brilliant
Thanks for this NPR, Alex is one of my favorites
Loved this performance! Really talented group from top to bottom. :)
never heard of him until now, and I'm glad I clicked on it!

Glad to see him back in the fold!!! :D Welcome back Clare... good artist choice NPR!
He is amazinggg
I'm sure he's over singing "Too Close", but the power is what makes him great.
He still crushes it every time with Too Close on his concerts! He tends to play it with only his acoustic guitar and its is MIND BLOWING how good his voice is live!
Beard Power! Sounds like some good ole soul and Folk music...Bad man ! Jam out !
Like a caterpillar becomes a butterfly or a Lion develops its mighty roar this drummer will soon acquire his majestic beard....he is 2 gigs away from completion 😁👍

was waiting for the guy in blue to crack into backup vocals or something but no. He really is just there for the shaker.
If you think it's an easy job, try it.
We all had that mate in high school we promised we'd take with us if we made it...
he did do a bit at some points
lmao, killed me with this one
He does sing back up.
This is pretty good.

He just put out a acoustic album that may be one of the greatest of all time
