    I recently rediscovered this soundtrack, AND, the realization of how amazing Mancini's music is. This is a brilliant soundtrack! How fortunate to be gifted enough to grace the world with this incredible music. Thanks for posting.

    This is special movie for a special man that was in my life, and that was my father. His imagination was about as big as mine, but he actually "did it" which made it even more exciting. I remember being a small little girl and always watching his every move and ultimately he was my hero regardless of our differences. I remember watching this movie with him and the intensity of the plot and cinematography was phenomenal, I knew from that moment that I wanted to visit Africa and go on Safari. I hope my daddy is in heaven and finally seeing the beauty of the places he wanted to visit. He's free from Alzheimer's now...

    Saw this film in 1962 when I was 8 years old at a cinema in Elizabeth St in Sydney Australia that had a massive chandelier. Saw the beginning on a wide screen in colour(back when we had a 26 inch black and white TV.) with John Wayne and co trying to get that rhino with Henry Mancini’s music made me fall in love with movies. First movie I ever saw with John Wayne, and in 2008 paid good money to go all the way from the Land of Aus to Monument Valley Utah to see where John Wayne and John Ford made their classic movies.

      Hi, I was 3 in 1962, my parents brought this album home, played it often, the front cover of the album enthralled me! I believed there was fire coming out from under the truck lol. When I got a few years older, I WAS popping the record on the Zenith playing it way to loud!! This music absolutely speaks to you in a way that's difficult to describe....Mancini truly a gifted genius at creating music that GETS to the the heart and soul.

    I knew even at 11 yrs old living in LA California Mancini's music was way too cool for words. After seeing the movie I talked my mom into buying the sound track, played it over and over cha cha cha...:) Don't know why the other day 2/09/2022 the music played in my ears. Hurray I love Utube here it is...smart & sassy as ever. :) Thank you for the sweet memories...peace

    this long play, "HATARI" my older brother brought it from Panama in 1964, when he was stationed in the US Army; I was 12 then; and the portable record player, was the top of the high-tech!In those days, I thought the world revolved around me, and I was the owner of the universe, like all teenagers believe! WONDERFUL MEMORIES!!

      When I saw it my family viewed it from our family car at a drive-in theater. That concept lasted from the 50's, 60's until the drive in died in the early 70's or thereabouts. I don't believe there was a "Wayne" movie I didn't like.

    Howard Hawks originally hired his long-time collaborator and friend Dimitri Tiomkin to score Hatari. However, after several consultations in which Tiomkin couldn't or wouldn't grasp Hawks vision he was let go. Hawks said he told Tiomkin, "I want an organic African-themed score--NO ******* STRINGS! You give me a score with strings and you're fired" Tiomkin seemed to agree, then a few days later, called Hawks and said, "Howard...you were kidding about the strings, right?". Hawks, without batting an eye said, "You're fired Dimi." And that's how Mancini got the job.

    • @jazman49
      @jazman49 9 років тому +3

      Marckymarc71 I never knew this story and Henry Mancin's score was truly organic. Somehow he always knew how to bring it. yeah he used strings but in the appropriate places.

      The only false note is the use of piano ... doesn't work. On the other hand, no other composer could have come up with "Baby Elephant Walk". Ironically Mancini himself was summarily fired by Alfred Hitchcock just ten years later for much the same reason -- on "Frenzy.

    When i was growing up, back in the old country (Honduras) there was a radio novel (well there very many) called Kaliman: The Incredible Man. and this was the soundtrack they used on it (obvious copyright infringement) but i never knew where the music was from but it went along quite well with the fast paced-adventurous type of radio novel. everyone knew Kaliman. Anyway, fast forward to a few day ago, i found the radio novel here in youtube, so i shazamed the melody and Hatari popped up!

    Smoking in every scene...a different decade, a different time. Hatari among John Wayne movies...my favorite of all. I am not a big fan of westerns, much less John Wayne or Clint Eastwood westerns. I do like John Wayne as an actor, but mostly in his adventure movies such as Hatari & Hell Fighters where he fights oil well fires. I also like Fighting Seabees & 1-2 other of his war movies, but among John Wayne movies Hatari is my favorite. I dunno why, maybe because of the Africa setting, the bush house they live in, the cast with the german guy, french guy, the Indian & Red Buttons are the best. Oh, and what a crush I have on "Dallas", what a hottie. Great, great movie. I watch it several times per year when I need something light & fun to watch. Have it on DVD & am waiting to find another copy in stock at Wal-Mart to have a back-up copy.

      1971Kentucky I got to see it when it first came to town, we had an old theater but it had a large screen & a great sound system. I cried when they tore down that old movie theater. Now all we have are those small shoe box theaters with crappy sound.

      Ooooh, would love to watch Hatari on a big screen. We have a few retro theaters around central Kentucky that sometimes play older movies but most of those theaters are in bigger cities & I live in a small town to far to drive to watch a movie.

    I just noticed this, but in the movie the "Indian" gets gored by the rhino at the beginning of the movie while riding in a jeep. After that incident all other rhino catching scenes have the cast in higher vehicles so the rhino can't gore them as easily. However, in the movie poster in this video John Wayne is sitting in the very exposed "catcher's chair" on the front of the "catching truck" and is very exposed to the rhino.
