  • The old East London traditions have been withering away for many decades now. As an old East End lad, Matt Johnson grew up with these old traditions, including one of his family’s favourites: Pie & Mash. Here he is in conversation with Jake Green - London based visual artist - about a subject close to both of their hearts.

Brought back so many good memories of growing up at my dads pub! Matt is a great person and an inspiration for all with his music that is in a league of one.. I too passed on the eels but pie n mash! Working class and full of flavour!!

As a kid, my mum would take me on the 73 from King’s Cross to Chapel Market and I remember Manze’s. Cooke’s in Dalston was a must whenever we went to Ridley Road market, and I too had that morbid curiosity watching the eels meet their end! Probably why I’ve never eaten them. Castle’s just off Camden Road at school lunchtimes too, a race against time that was. Bless you Matt, your music is in a league of it’s own..

Some of the best things in life are the simplest. Its funny seeing matt reminiscing about pie and mash shops as a kid and it being something he still does today. Its funny what memories and nostalgia can do to a person. Its not something we have in nw uk but i do have similar riutals and pilgrimages to places that have had significance to me growing up. I still love chips from the chippy and greggs chees and onion pasties, chewing on a peice of coltsfoot, or peanut brittle and spam...chip shops where i live used to have tables in the back where you could sit and eat...all now gone...even fish and chips is getting too expensive...fond memories.

Getting older and our brothers and dads die, sad fact of life!
