Interview with Tarja Turunen and Tuomas Holopainen presenting Nightwish´s album Oceanborn in 1999, they also play Sacrament of Wilderness and Gethsemane.
English translation: Female announcer [FA]: "Tarja Turunen and Tuomas Holopainen from band Nightwish, welcome." Tuomas [Tu]: "Hello hello." Tarja [Ta]: "Thank you thank you." FA: "This second album of yours, Oceanborn, is heavier stuff than your first. Was this like your own decision, or was there perhaps pressuring from the record label to that end?" Tu: "No pressuring from any quarter. All the development that has happened has happened completely on its own. That is, before we started making the album, or even making the songs, there was no certainty about the outcome. Everything's come out on its own." FA: "This is the genuine Nightwish then." Male announcer [MA]: "Tarja, you've a magnificent voice, you're a third year student at the Sibelius Academy [Finnish conservatory]. What's the most difficult about combining a classical singing style or the studies you're receiving there, and the music of this genre?" Ta: "Listen, well... I've myself had to think about this very much, because the technique in this genre is very different at the end of the day than in classical singing. Even though my classical training shines through from the music, or from the singing what... Or the VOICE we can say. But, it's... It's not at all easy to sing Tuomas's and Erno's songs. Really. It's not easy AT ALL. You can compare it to opera arias, the condition [required of a singer] is totally... Like, you can totally compare these songs on a same scale." MA: "Yes, you've performed at Savonlinna Opera Festival as a choir member after all---" Ta: "Yes..." MA: "So you've experience from various stages. Tuomas, you're the song writer, but on the record there are also some songs that are not quite so heavy-like or typical representatives of the metal genre such as that... Swanheart. Well... I think you said before that you personally listen to a wide array of music and the songs don't start from any plain heavy metal setting." Tu: "Yeah, absolutely not. If I should mention some sources for inspiration where, like, I get ideas from, inspiration for the songs, it's precisely [inaudible] and movie soundtracks that I listen to very much." FA: "So Tarja, you're a rarity also in the sense that one almost never sees a female lead in a heavy metal band. Have you been taken as an oddity of some sort?" Ta: "Oddity [laughs]... Interesting... Well... I've been received very well. That's been very nice to notice. Though I was a little scared at first but it's been very fun with these guys to do this. And there are other female leads in heavy metal, in heavy music there have always been women but no classical singers. Those you see a little more unusually but..." MA: "Thank you.-- FA: "Thank you." @TheCasanovvaa Yes, I already noticed that it is veeery hard to learn for I once tried to learn it just "for fun" ( not really succeeded ;-) ). Think it´s different if you just learn it for your own interest or if you are living over there and are dependent on speaking it in order to "survive". However, I still like the pronounciation and sound of the language.
@Loomr i1: Tarja you have a really great voice you are studying at the sibelius academy for the 3rd year what has been the hardest in combining the classical techniques you learn there and this heavy metal material? TT: well, personally I've had to think about this issue a lot because the technique involved in this is totally different than in classical singing, although my classical roots can be heard in my singing ... or lets say in my voice.
@Loomr i1: Tuomas you're a song writer but there are many not-so heavy-like songs such as Swanheart, I think you mentioned already that you yourself listen to very diverse spectrum of music and the songs (that you write) don't merely come from heavy-metal origins. TH: yeah certainly not. If I'd have to mention some of my influences where I get ideas I'd say that especially from this floating (???? =leijunta) and film music that I listen to a lot.
