Thing is practical- played by a real actor. The stump is attached to the top of his wrist and it has secondary controls, so he can turn the the stump one direction and keep his fingers planted. He truly brings the character to life.
The actor playing Thing is a professional magician (same as the movie), so he has incredible manual dexterity. I've seen some behind the scenes stuff on the official Netflix youtube channel, and he has a prosthetic stump on his wrist and then the rest of him is covered in a green suit.
You’re right. Jenna wasn’t blinking by accident because she was trying to hold a certain neutral face. Tim Burton noticed Jenna wasn’t blinking and loved it. So he asked her to try to do the whole thing without blinking. Very few blinks. Very few times her eyes close. Typically if her eyes close it’s intentional because she’s allowing vulnerability.
Jenna Ortega spent months learning fencing, playing the cello and learning German. The dance part she looked up things and made the dance herself which also has a part Wednesday dance from the 60's tv show. lots easter eggs in it. Love your doing the show I loved it when I watched can't wait until the second season is on. Thing was not CGI a magician did the hand.
Let’s hope they can produce all 4 seasons as they originally planned. Amazon acquiring MGM, which owns the rights to The Addams Family, has thrown a monkey wrench into the whole thing.
I was so happy to see Gwendoline Christie in this show. We didn't see her in the trailers so it was a surprise to me. There is some great behind the sceenes footage of how they filmed Thing. He's actually played by magician Victor Dorobantu, which is cool, and a nice callback to Thing being played by a magician before. The shot where she holds Thing up is full CG and I feel they have been doing a great job with making him realistic.
1:11 Fun fact: The Season 2 announcement trailer uses that music, and has Wednesday narrate that she's been "mimicked millions of times across the Internet."
Yeah, they had Ukrainian magician named Victor Dorobantu play Thing and the nub was prosthetic addition to his actual hand. They only used CGI for Thing when everything else they tried didn't look good and that happened rarely.
I was pleasantly surprised with this show. I don’t normally watch shows just because of the buzz because ive been disappointed enough before, but people just wouldn’t stop talking about this so I gave in. I enjoyed it way more than I expected to. And it does consistently get better with each episode.
The finale drops the ball a fair bit IMO, it wraps certain things up way too quickly and introduces some other parts out of nowhere. But the lead up to it was great, Tim Burtons best work since Frankenweenie.
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 That’s fair, and I agree. I feel like the finale would’ve worked better with just one more episode prior to flesh everything out fully. Maybe instead of the Gomez murder subplot (which was clearly just an excuse to get the parents directly involved in an episode), they could have used that time to further develop the events of the finale. That said, there was some satisfying character stuff between Wednesday and Enid that kinda overshadowed everything else for me anyway.
I'm almost grumpy sometimes when everyone says 'X is good!' and I watch it reluctantly and... ok, ok, it's really good. (Same thing happened with Arcane)
My 10 year old niece made me watch the show with her, right after she'd watched it with her parents. "This is my favorite show of all time!" she said. And we had so much fun watching it together, I was fully invested and trying to figure out the mystery. "Can I tell you a big spoiler?!" she asked me at one point. No! 😄
Thing was 95% a actor, he's actually a close up magician. They only used CG or props when it was impossible for the actor to do the scene. Also your right Jenna and Tim Burton decided early on that they wanted Wednesday to blink as little as possible. You'll notice she only blinks in situations where she is uncomfortable. Jenna put alot of work into the role. She had multiple skills she had to learn and developed the unique way she moves and carries herself. Her dead pan face and expressive eyes were part of that. Fun fact during a con in Brazil the audience challenged Jenna to not blink for as long as she could, she accepted and proceeded to answer questions. She lasted around 2 minutes to the point her eyes were watering.
Thing is 100% practical. I've seen some BTS images and it's basically like Eric said. The stump is a prosthetic with a stick so they can move it as needed, and the actor has a blue sleeve on.
YES! You're doing Wednesday! I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when I first heard of it. The only things I had seen before watching the show were posts from a couple accounts I follow who were posting a lot of Wenclair ship art and pictures from the trailer. But I ended up liking the show quite a lot, definitely an enjoyable and rewatchable one for me.
Thing is played by a Romanian magician. He just wore a blue suit so that they removed his body. His Instagram is amazing to really get some good behind the scenes on how they did everything.
Yeah this is a great show! As everyone said, Jenna crushes it, with things like others explained with the blinking, the dance she choreographed, learning some fencing, German, to play the cello, and everything, she’s amazing. Thing is a magician’s hand with free screen getting the actor out. Tim directed the first 4, another director 2, and the last 2 someone else, but it all flowed pretty well. It’s definitely a “fun” show, it’s one to not take SUPER seriously but just enjoy and have fun with it, a few things are a bit loose but it’s all good fun (: Can’t wait to see more!
Thing previously looked a lot more like someone trying to mimic movement like walking with a hand, while New Thing looks like the actor put a lot of effort into imagining "how would something that had four fingers and a thumb to walk on move?" No wonder it looks almost spider-like, in fact, if you watch a tarantula walk, you'll see similarities. My very arachnophobic friend actually felt some discomfort watching New Thing because of that reason. On the other hand (no pun intended), since Thing's fingers/thumb are coordinated a lot like a spider coordinates its legs, if Thing had two hairy cousins who had beef with each other would look like tarantulas mating.
It’s weird that one of the complaints for this show was that Morticia was forcing Wednesday to go somewhere against her will, and in the movies she embraced her personality. It’s like those people didn’t watch the second movie where she forced her and Pugsley to go to Sumer camp despite their objections.
Really late but the Addams tv show from the 60's! It's really good and the actors in this show defintly did there research! It's just sad cause the girl who played Wednesday recently passsed away. The only actor left is the dad.
I was hesitant to watch this because I’m a fan of the original (tv show, not movies) Addams Family. I finally watched it after it was recommended and I thought it was fantastic and I can’t wait for season 2!

I like parts of the show and I think Jenna is good as Wednesday, but there's also things about it that disappoint me. Mainly that, to me, the thing about the Addams is that although they at first glance seem like the abnormal ones in a world of normal people, they somehow manage to turn that on its head and you start realizing they are in many ways the reasonable ones because the rest of humanity is pretty ridiculous about many things. But this show isn't able to get at that concept because they put her in a school where everybody is abnormal. And shows about a group of young mutants/wizards/occult and whatnot is so dime a dozen now. It's one of the most used setups. Still, I do enjoy some of it.
Love you guys…..y’all got me through a dark time in my life. Y’all videos mean a lot to me. Keep up the good work. Not gonna lie I watched all your movie reactions at least 3 times.

I'm not under 13 either, I grew up with Tim Burton movies. So did much of the audience. And this was his best project in years. Maybe instead of not watching and saying a show is bad, you could not watch, and also not give worthless commentary.
I've seen this kind of severed hand practical effect before. So it's a real hand with a prosthetic wrist/nub sticking up above the performer's actual wrist while the actor is wearing a sleeve that can be painted out in post. Creating a 100% practical Thing.
