There's a reason why mountain is measured from sea level. With the logic used here, any peak measured from marian trench as base will be higher than any mountain.

Mount Everest was considered as the Tallest Mountain from Sea level. That is why the Himalayan Mountain Range counts in calculating the height. That said, Hawaii as an Island is considered as an Island because by definition, Hawaii is a land piece that is surrounded by water, which satisfies the definition of an Island. Of course, unless you count Hawaii as an "underwater mountain" calculating the height from base to summit, Hawaii is taller than Mount Everest. This then decides in which criteria you apply for the tallest mountain. If you count, tallest from sea level, then that is Mount Everest. If you count, tallest from base to summit (whole mountain), then that goes to Hawaii, specifically, Mauna Kea.
Denali is the tallest, in my opinion. Everest starts up really high, while the lands near Denali are quite low in comparison. Though, as an Alaskan, Mauna Kea is good enough too, even if it doesnt really count imo
