I have this mic. Its so amazing! I definitely recommend. Many people think I'm using the shure SM7B. If you don't want to drop 399 on the 7B, I HIGHLY recommend this. I might get another one before the price jumps up
Your tutorials are excellent and also funny at the same time. I'm a bit of a microphone tech geek and this helps me out big time. Terrific job my friend
Having the SM7B in the comparison is great. Even if they arent comparable price, anyone buying this is prob buying it because its cheaper than a 7B. And honestly in reviews I've never heard a SM7B and been like, "wow thats well worth its price tag". Not that its a bad mic in any way. I just costs several times as much as mics that I think sound equal. Nothing a little editing cant fix. Good review.
I second Ace'nis' request. Awesome video and a great review, it would just be that much easier to compare the review mic with each compared mic if you had the review mic sound between each of the others. Keep the great work coming! Also, bought this as my first serious mic, for DMing online D&D, and have already been getting compliments on the sound (if a bit quiet out of the box).
Glad to see & hear you back. I’ve been looking into this mic since it got out . Personally, I feel it’s a bit too bright for me, but paired with the Rodecaster pro, it’s an easy fix with the APHEX controls. I’m hoping you’ll look into the Sontronics Podcast Pro and do a shootout with similar priced podcast mics. Keep up with the good work mate👍
Great review. Seems like a pretty nice mic for the cost. Still holding out for the Samson Q9U though. It better not disappoint. Only been waiting all year 😅 Ps. Your voice sounds much better than last time. Good to see you've recovered well.
I really love the cinematic filming style you always use. Btw have you heard of the new Aston Element mic? The sales page makes it seem incredibly promising for the $199 price tag
Nice review. Î’m looking for a good mic for my VO artist who has a low voice. With the pandemic we are force to work out of the studio so we will try to kill the echo from the room but if a mic perform better in that regard... thank you for your advice
Great mic review as always! SM7B still on top but it's not a surprise. I actually like PD-70 a lot more than other mics. Would be nice if you could alternate the mic you test when comparing with different microphones. I had to scroll through video to get a fresh taste. Sorry for being picky lol.
I’d go for the PD-70. They don’t sound insanely different, but I personally prefer cardioid for podcasting vs super-cardioid. I just like having better rejection from the back of the mic rather than better rejection from the sides. That is more of a personal preference thing though. This does a good job with air and plosives, which is great. They are both solid mics, I just lean toward the PD-70 a little bit. I can guarantee that the Beta 58a will be in a video very soon though!
@@AudioHotline alright last question! I appreciate your reply. What about the shock mount? I can buy shock mounts for the 58a’s easily but how does this microphone fair?
I know you shit on the rode podcaster a lot but I found a deal near me for $100. I can get that or a scarlett solo with xm8500 or sm48 (all used) for around the same price. I'm only looking for a new mic for streaming and discord nothing special. Which should I go for?
@@AudioHotline I'd say average maybe going to high. I actually did a bunch of research and even though I don't see myself upgrading I think having the option would be great. Considering both these options are the same price but I could always get something like a cheap procaster later or blue ember etc whereas with podcaster I'm stuck. Would you recommend xm8500 or sm48?
Sounds pretty thin to me, no body or richness to it, i was surprised how the MXL BCD1 sounded so good on you, Podmic is good too! And the classic SM58 takes the cake for me here! Presonus, though is a NO.
In order to get this connected up to your computer you will need an audio interface in addition to the microphone. As well as an XLR cable to connect the mic to the audio interface. Here are a couple options you can look at to get acquainted with that you will need. Audio interface options: Focusrite Scarlett Solo: amzn.to/373wqmt Audient EVO 4: amzn.to/3rN6pQz Behringer UMC22 (cheapest option, not quite as nice as the others): amzn.to/3d3MAjx XLR cables: amzn.to/3pfpAR3 You will need some sort of software on your a computer to capture the sound. There are some free DAW (digital audio workstation) programs out there like Audacity. Also, this mic doesn’t come with a mic stand of any kind, so you will need a mic stand or desktop boom arm.
@@AudioHotline I knew I needed an XLR and boom arm, but the audio interface throws it out of my budget. unfortunate as this seems like a really great mic for what I'm wanting to do.
I mean, you can. I would probably recommend going with a cheaper mic and getting an interface though. The SM48 or the XM8500 are very reasonable, good sounding mics that you could pair with a used Focusrite Scarlet Solo and get it all for around the same price as the PD-70. Depending on the 3.5mm input you are plugging this into, it may not translate well, it tends to have a lot more noise floor. Consider downloading the app “Reverb” it has great used audio gear on there, and it is sold by other musicians/audio lovers. Basically it is an awesome eBay for audio gear.
@@AudioHotline thank you! i’m looking for an attractive microphone that will really make a set up look better, so a stage looking microphone isn’t my thing, hence why i want the pd-70. attractive with good sound.
Fair enough. One thing you can do is get an iRig Pre with the PD-70. They are about $40 new, but I have literally bought them for $25 used. It allows you to plug in an XLR mic, and then send that signal out to a 3.5mm input. The reason this is better than just going with an XLR to 3.5mm is that you have a preamp in the iRig that can drive the microphone much better. The iRig pre even has phantom power available, which you wouldn’t need for the PD-70, unless you get a mic activator, but Phantom Power is a great thing to have available. If you need to be around that $130 - $140 price, you could consider the Podmic and the iRig pre instead of the PD-70, since the Podmic goes for $100... unless you aren’t a fan of the look of the podmic.
I think out of the lot the mic was compared to, it was the thinnest sounding microphone, had no body whatsoever, people go on hating the podmic, i think that mic sounds better than this. U said SM7B should not be brought into its comparison, i think it should...bcz hey, they ripped it inside out!🤣🤣🤣. If this thing is GOOD for 130, i think the Podmic is better at 100!

Yeahhh, sibilance was my one issue with it. Although, I find that my voice is more sibilant than most people haha. It is a hard balance of whether I like a mic in general and if I think it will work for a lot of people vs if it is perfect for me. When I was messing around with EQ during editing this video, I was able to minimize the sibilance very easily. Which sometimes isn’t an easy task, so that kind of played into my final opinion as well! Haha right??? I need a clip of him saying “that’s what she said” that I can throw in my videos whenever haha. YES! Legally we did get married! On 10/10/2020. We are still going to have a ceremony in the future with friends and family! @Audio Hotline Thanks for your quick reply. I'm a full beginner. I want to record my written poetry professionally. But my room is not soundproof. So can you suggest me a good microphone and audio interface? After buying, I don't regret it..
Yeah that section is definitely not for everyone and is one of the reasons I include timestamps. I will say though, there are some general things people need to know about mics, especially when it comes to polar patterns and mic type. Those things can really help you decide what mic will work for you and the room you will be recording in. One of the most common comments I see on here is someone that got a condenser mic and they are having problems with it picking up a lot of noise in their room. Understanding that condenser mics are much more sensitive and tend to pick up room noise a lot more than dynamic cardioid mics would have been a good thing to know before purchasing their mic. Also, sometimes it is a USB condenser mic (Blue Yeti) that they have set to omnidirectional mode (picks up noise all around mic), rather than cardioid (most sensitive in the front, least sensitive in the back). So as boring as they are, they are a necessary evil for understanding how the mic functions and if it will work for the potential buyer.
Hey man i'm doing screaming vocals, would you recommend the podmic or the pd70? I've got an sm58 but i'm not exactly happy with settling, i wanna try a new mic on my vocals.
