I saw the interface you use. Are you using anything else? I find that the output of the SM58 using an audio interface is kind of low. Wondering if you are using an inline pre-amp or something else.
The only difference is the windscreen. The president uses them because the 57's locking windscreen looks better than the 58 with an added windscreen. Other good options (for a bit more money) are the shure beta 56a drum mic, beta 57a instrument mic, and beta 58a vocal mic, which are all the same guts. 56 and 57 have the same grille with minimal screen, while the 58 has virtually the same grille as the sm58. I actually sing live into a beta 56a drum mic because it can't get by a passerby and soundmen won't think its theirs and steal my mic during teardown. (edited to remove a typo)
@@tombuck the only major difference is the frequency response that is more flat on the 57, thats why you'll hear more highs on it. and since the 57 and 7b capsules are also almost the same, u can make the 57 sound *identical* as its brother that costs like 300 bucks more. + on an 57 u dont need an cloud lifter, on the 7b you'll pretty much need one
57's are an absolute workhorse. There's almost nothing you can't do with them. I "upgraded" to a podmic from my 57 and I'm selling the PM for another 57.
If you want a budget sm7b, throw the a55 shock mount and the a81 windscreen on an SM57. Put a fethead on it to warm up the tone if you want to get even closer.
Exactly, the 58 is the best. The proximity effect makes the perfect eq at the source. The transformer is wound to pick up more lows than the 57 and the highs are smoother due to the grill. Take the grill off and you have a 57 with more lows. The 58 is more versatile because the 57 grill is not removable and is woven tighter to control spl from instruments. So... no, the 57 is not "just as good" just because that's the one you own.
If you want an sm7b, get sm57 and EQ it. Everyone knows they have similar frequencies (flat). The sm58 however does not have the correct frequency to imitate the sm7b, but even with headphones I can't tell the difference between the sm57 and sm7b when the sm57 is EQ'd correctly. You can find videos on the EQ settings within UA-cam.
For streaming I've been using SM58's from being in a band 10 years ago...still work fantastic. Glad this confirmed I didn't need to go out and buy some mics designed for podcasting. You're right on the versatility as well. I can go from speaking at my desk to singing karaoke in the middle of the house with no issues.
I'm stunned by the price of the SM58. The last time I bought one was almost 30 years ago. It was between $80 and $100 back then, so with the rate of inflation I'm surprised it's not going for at least $125 to $150 today.
I'm in the minority that I think I prefer the PodMic. It doesn't have that deep broadcaster thing that I kinda think has gone out of style with most youtubers using a lav or a shotgun mic and I also find that the proximity effect of both the 57 and the 58 to be more obvious. This becomes an issue when the talent gets closer and further from the mic. The PodMic seems more balanced and neutral. And you can add a bid of low mids if you want that type of sound. Thanks for doing this.
You’re welcome! I love the PodMic, and and very happy with my 2. It’s important to remember that this comparison has no post processing, and it is ossicle to tune the mic to suit your preference/voice.
I’m glad someone else also left this comment. I don’t like the boomy effect of the SM7B or at least the way most people eq it. I find the extreme bottom end grating and fatiguing.

Saw someone review it have have something like a Rode whatever videomic Pro or something and yeah the stuff he used for video sounded very nice.
kenny gioia Your not alone!, I’ve been using a pair of Podmics into my Rodecaster Pro since they came out, fantastic quality, I used to use SM58s into a mixing desk in an untreated garden shed (true story) these Podmics are way better for similar money, I’d recommend them to anyone as they are very forgiving.
The sound of the SMs is supreme but having one already I picked the podmics for a podcast! Giving hut a bit of my audiophile quality for good broadcasting looks
As a DJ, my go to is a 58 and I think it sounds great as a podcast mic as well. I noticed myself falling into a trap of falling for the hype of the rode, which is awesome, but I already own the 58. You helped me feel better about sticking with a 58 and saved me $100!!!
The Podmic has a really great look and nice hefty build quality that is very appealing. The SM57 doesn't have the screen appeal, but with the A2WS locking windscreen it looks camera ready and the sound is really hard to beat. The SM57 was my first podcasting mic. As a newcomer to mics I bought and tried a bunch of different dynamic and condenser mics, and while there are many very nice looking products out there - most of which sound quite good - I just keep coming back to the SM57 for the audio quality it delivers. I put podcast interview guests on a condenser with a pop filter in front of it because they don't always speak right into the mic or have good mic discipline and technique. Right now I'm very happy with the Neat Worker Bee II for my guests. In a treated room I might switch to the King Bee II myself, but for my current space a dynamic mic like the SM57 works best.
This is a solid video and basically the conclusions I've came to after a few days of research. For guitarists/musicians, a SM57 is worth having as you can double as an instrument mic, but I agree for podcast/voice-over specific people, the Podmic or SM58 is the way to go.
Thanks for this one. I have been using the 58 on my channel...but Ive been considering switching to the rode mic. They both sound good...but being able to use the 58 without a stand is a pretty big benefit that I didn’t think about. 👍🏻👍🏻
I'm going to agree... the 58 sounds the best especially with the windscreen. Makes me wonder what the Rode would sound like with an outer windscreen. That PodMic preset makes the Rode sound a lot more like the SM7b.
Of the three, on spoken word I think I prefer the SM58. Both Shures sound good and sound better to me than the Podmic but I think I like the SM58 just a little bit more. Many companies have tried to make their own replacement for the SM58 and some of them are good for certain situations but to me the smooth sound of the SM58 still sounds the best.
The 58 really is just about the most versatile mic there is. I agree that, even though they can sound great in their own way, none of the similar versions are quite the same.
I really like the PodMic when you aren't directly on it. Its very harsh when too close. When you back off even just a few inches, it sounds perfect. I am not a sound engineer or audio expert, just what I've noticed. At 1:40 for example.
I’ve always recorded my published rap and r&b songs with condenser mics (like the mxl 770) and I’ve been doing asmr and podcasting lately. My M-Box mini was made in 2005 and is still ticking but the preamps seem weak. I tried the M-Audio Air 192 and the software/drivers are horrid. So I’m glad you reviewed the Scarlet 2i2. I’m enjoying your videos about mics because I just always assumed that the classically shaped 58 mics were for live singers and not studio vocals. So, thanks. I’ve been binge watching your channel as much as the Omeleto channel, lol.
2:14 & 8:42 you are shortchanging the sm57 a little bit. The sm57 is THE white house mic and has been since the beginning (decades). Shure also makes a really big windscreen for sm57 (used at the wh). It too is on amazon. Some feel the sm57 is even more versatile than the 58. Making the 57 the one mic to own. You showed all three mics with some processing applied which is a good thing. Most reviewers dont do that. There are vids floating around on yt showing how to eq an sm57 to sound very similar to an sm7b. Saving a ton of money. I imagine though the same could be done with the 58. Ive seen that the capsules in the sm's are similar.
Great video.! This helped me to get lots of information between SM58 and Podmic. I really like the quality of the video. Great lighting and colors. Very pleasant to see.
I'm gonna be honest the SM57 sounds better than all of them. Kinda a bit more clear compared to the others too. And the PodMic has like a robot noise i can hear. I think the Shure SM58 sounds pretty great although I thought your voice sounded better on the SM57. To bad I don't know what beatboxing would sound like on the SM57 lol.
Thanks for putting this together Tom! We use the SM58's with our unit but it's a new purchase so still dialing things in - what do you find yourself setting gain at (on average) for your uses with the SM58?
Tom, in this comparison, IMHO, that Rode mic is not right for your voice. The 58 is. The 57 is best used at a distance of 10 inches with the windscreen and an isolation mount. Two of them are often used in the US Presidential podium mount. But MOST people use the 58 for singing, public address, and close talking, and the 57 is used for recording guitar amps, drums, acoustic instruments, etc. The Electro Voice RE-20 beats the crap out of the 7B on my voice, and is an iconic radio studio mic. It avoids the exaggerated proximity effect of the 7B. It's also a great mic for kick drums and any instrument requiring a mic with a flat response and the ability to handle high volume sound levels. There are hypercardioid high output versions of the 57 and 58, too. They are the Beta 57A and the Beta 58A. They are highly directional, so may not be appropriate for people who don't use mics daily. They cost a little more, but can be worth it for some voices.
Idk if it is the setup but the Rode sounds worse, although I also noticed this in other reviews. Its very fizzy, buzzy, and too sibilant sounding. Maybe maybe with compression and EQ it would sound better than the others, but unprocessed the 58/57 sound much more pleasant.
Thanks for the overview! i really feel like the podmic is better with a windscreen and if you work the mic a lot closer... it really comes alive at close distances
My microphones of choice are the Shure 55SH and Shure SM58 for stadium announcing for football and SM58 arena announcing for volleyball and basketball...I use the Shure 55SH for auditorium emceeing and vocals.
So I got it and found the sound output is super low, when plugged into my Focusrite (1st generation) on Logic Pro. My pencil condensor mic has much higher output levels. Do these SM58s need a preamp in order to have higher output?
SM58 sounds soooo GREAT!! Thank you for doing this!! What are your settings on the RODE caster? Your BASS is so smooooth Wound up listening to this entire video Thanks 4 sharing!! CoachDeb
Hi, what about the shure beta58a? I know it's over 100usd but I think it sounds a little bit better than the sm58 and I love it for podcast, specially for my interviewees. I record everything on the tascam dr-60 to have a quick setup to travel. to go to people offices and to use it on camera with a tascam dr10x. Thanks for the video!
You nailed it with a great topic. Unfortunately no matter how awesome the 2 Sure mics sound unexpected plosives did occur. My $ purchase decision will go to the Rode. It was a flatter sound but didn't show plosives. Well worth the $100 without purchasing pop filters.
Hi, I want to record my written poetry professionally. Suggest me a good audio interface and microphone. But my room is not sound proof. The sound from outside comes inside our room. If I use Audio Technica 2035 mic and Shuru SM 58, then what will be the difference between the two? And which audio interface would be better for ShureSM 58. In which there is no noise and the quality is also good at the time of recording.
Honestly, a solid USB mic might be the way to go. The Sennheiser Profile is my favorite recommendation. Then you don't need an interface or anything like that.
So you seem to love the 58; but you have 2 Rode PodMics. Just got my Podmic and love it! This was a great review. The SM7 intrigues me but as you said, you can have 4 Rode Podmics or 2 Podmics and a 58 and a 57! Again great review
The podmic sounds thin as compared to sm57 and 58 but that is because it's eq'ed in such a way that you don't have to later on. the sm58 and 57 sound a bit muddy so you will need to clean them up with an eq. So I think for podcast podmic wins. In case if somebody is a singer or guitarist as well as a youtube podcaster than sm57 and 58 will be better I think.
There are a lot of microphones that sound better thant the SM58, but they are usually a lot more expensive. If you're in a budget, in my opinion the Shure SM58 still has the best price/quality balance of all mics out there, you get great quality mic for just 100 dollars and to top it all it's really small and portable and is basically a tank, you can drop it and hit it and use it under non ideal weather conditions and it will still function as new and record in high quality even with a horrible background noise because it's such a silent mic. The Shure SM58 is truly one of the greatest microphones ever made and its legendary status is no coincidence. Now if you think it's too quiet and want to boost the gain without clipping, just get a cloudlifter for an additional 100 dollars more or less and it's a game changer. I'd love to have a Shure Sm7b, and test its legendary status as well, but it's too expensive for me at the moment and in the meantime the SM58 has done nothing but making me happy.
I personally couldn't give an airborne rodents posterior about visuals I want people to hear me clearly I want people to be able to understand what I'm saying. Looks are superficial compared to audio quality but that's just my opinion.
A lot of mic selection really does come down to individual voice/preference. It's hard to make objective statements that are truly accurate. The SM57 is an outstanding mic.
I continue to take my stand that the SM58 is better sounding and all-around better than the Rodemic.. The only advantage of the Rodemic, which I won't completely dismiss is that its better looking cosmetically for videos.
@@tombuck No doubt. I have a SM7B for my home studio and a pair of SM58 for when I go somewhere to tape an interview. Hey, I am a fan of your videos and really enjoy them. I also know you have a lot of audio/video/streaming knowledge. I wanted to ask you a question in hopes you can help me. Can you email me at moranalyticspodcast@gmail.com so I can ask ya (it's more about streaming). I don't want to sabotage the comment section on this mic video of yours
@@tombuck An 835 or SE V7 or Audix OM3 are better at the same price point. SM 58 has had all the marketing pushes. Also, engineers like it because they know the sound and it is easier to set up when you know the sound. It is okay, but is just that.

Naked I think the warmth of the SM58 was nicest and SM57 the worst. With the filter maybe the SM57 better than the SM58. The PodMic sound more neutral or whatever. That may not at all be accurate with actual frequency charts but rather just my preference / how I interpret it. Definitely not anything wrong with the PodMic just that the SM58 sounded different.
I personally think preference/how it sounds to your ears is more important than frequency charts in the long run 👍
4 роки тому+1
@@tombuck Yeah but I don't know whatever my "flat" actually mean FLAT. I don't really know how different frequencies sound. SM58 sound more pressence / closer / warmer / something. My "flatter" could likely mean "hollow" or"mid bump" or whatever too I guess I mean "less colored" / "more boring" / "more natural" or whatever. But I'm not just to judging gear as such so in the end it's just about what I prefer to hear rather than something more technical. And I'm not sure I even prefer the Shure sound it's just that it's obvious the SM58 sounds DIFFERENT to the other. And maybe that's a sound one could prefer because that's how one expect someone speaking into a microphone to sound though the other maybe is less colored. At actual charts it looks like the SM58 got a bit of a treble boost. From charts it looks like it's the podmic with have stronger upper bass instead. Maybe it's rather that the podmic picks up more of the sound "around" it and more of the environment rather than more straight from the mouth? Podmic sounds more nasal but maybe that's because of the bit more bumpy response? I would get used to hearing whatever anyway and then that would be fine. ua-cam.com/video/EPDfTtQvdZ8/v-deo.html Procaster sounds like lots of background noise there? Could you tell me this thing about sensitivity and background noise isn't it so that if you adjust the gain so you get the same amount of amplified signal / loudness wouldn't background noise then not just be the same anyway? Or will it actually result in a difference? It mean background noises from say a computer fan now not electrical background noises, I do understand that electronic noise everything else equal will of course be louder if you have to amplify more. But this claim that dynamic mics are better from removing background/environmental noise (of course they are also from the fact that if you speak close to the mic then that noise will be louder than the noise in the background rather than if you speak further away from it and then raise the gain but once again WHAT IF YOU SPEAK AT THE SAME DISTANCE AND END UP WITH THE SAME LOUDNESS OF THE SIGNAL EVENTUALLY WILL THE SENSITIVITY DIFFERENCE AFFECT HOW MUCH BACKGROUND / ENVIRONMENT NOISE YOU HEAR? Same sensitivity of -56 for both Procaster and SM58 so no difference there regardless.
I don’t have a scientific response, but anecdotally the PodMic seems to pick up more background noise. It has great proximity effect, and I feel like I’ve only recently gotten the hang of speaking into it the “correct” way. The SM58 is a more versatile mic all around, but I really enjoy the PodMic for podcasting, which is specifically what I bought it for. All that being said, the best results I’ve ever gotten have been front shotgun mics like the NTG2, even though this isn’t technically the correct application for them.
I bought an SM57 for voice. It sounds fairly similar to the SM7B and it looks a lot better on camera with the wind screen than the 58 (which matters to some people).
They all sound very similar! But it seems like the difference is in the low end. In this order: 57/58/pod mic of most robust low end. I was wondering if that was because of the angle in which you were speaking into the mic?
I don’t think the angle has much to do with it, but your ordering makes sense. The 57 has the least amount of pop filtering, the 58 has a bit more, and the PodMic is somewhat notoriously lacking on the low end. 👍
you can actually go even cheaper than all these, with a Shure SM48. costs about $40.. sound just like the SM58/57 and i think its sounds as good or better than the podmic (the podmic does sound good tho). Currently using an SM48 with an MG10XU mixer..
Clearly the Shure SM58 is better than the Rode PodMic. It is smoother in sound. It has better bass frequencies. But where the PodMic can fe a great microphone is if you have a baritone or deeper voice. The PodMic is then better to improve the clarity of your voice. The choppiness:snd tinniness of the PodMic sound is smoothed over by the lower male voices. Baritones don’t need more bass since that muddies and excessively booms their voice.
Since he mentioned the Blue Yeti at the end, I would personally not recommend buying a Blue Yeti especially if you're a beginner to audio, and by no means in my an expert I've just found the Blue Yeti takes a lot of tweaking to not pick up a ton of background noise, and I believe the SM57 or 58 are cheaper, and from what I've seen more intuitive... Again, take this with a grain of salt, 'cause I'm not an audio engineer, but I personally would rather have bought a different mic.
You're very much on point, the 57/58 are much more reliable and better sounding mics. The benefit of a Yeti or other similarly priced USB mic is that it's plug and play with no need for an interface of anything, and that's helpful for a lot of people. 👍
Wow, the SM58 with the Foam filter sounds amazing! The best truly but the best looks go to Rode and SM57 with foam filter. If you didn't know anything I can see the Rode looking the most "professional" overall although I am not a fan of the sound. I will say the Rode does sound like most UA-camrs nowadays so that has become the streaming sound, less bass, more treble and flat, clear sound overall though just missing the warmth and low end of the SM58
Tom i am amazed by your attention to detail 👏 thanks for sharing your knowledge with wit and humor yet staying on topic and condensing the core message. Love watching your videos and you inspired me to start a vidoe podcast. Keep posting the good stuff 🙏
@@tombuck thanks 🙏 maybe one day we will collaborate 😃 did you ever make a video about your video gear and process? Would love to watch it... If not please make one for the novice 🙏
I know this is an old video. The podmic looks really cool. The SM58 with whatever windscreen you used was great. The SM57 with the A81WS windscreen is also pretty sweet.
Dude! For $100 that quality is a steal. I've been using some Sennheisers for my current setup but run rode for all my camera mics. Might have to grab one too!
Man your sennheiser sounds so much better tho. It's sounds like how a mic would sound inbetween the SM58 and the SM7b. Not too sharp like SM58 but not too smooth/boring like the SM7b. Very pleasing to the ear.
@@tombuck I'm pretty sure because your videos are the cause lol they need to sponsor you 😘 btw when I take the mini sd card out do I have to use any other app or site to get the recordings?
For it was the PodMic i got for myself, because I'm looking forward to livestream in the near future and then the looks of the microfone are pretty important, because the viewers can see the mic all the time
So you have just created a big problem for me and that is when it came down to the sm58 and the rode podmic I felt they sounded the same and was set on getting the podmic just for looks. Unfortunately I know am I only wondering how the podmic would sound with a pop filter because when you put the pop on the sm58 it sounds much better but if the rode can sound like that with the filter I want the rode.
Tricky decision for sure. The PodMic has a built in pop filter, but I think it’s a tad weak. Some bigger filters, like ones for the SM7B will fit on it, but I don’t have one. The SM58 is more versatile, but the PodMic works treat and is more visually appealing (which might matter in some circumstances). I personally own two PodMics and am very happy with them.
I just got my Forecasted Pro! Having fun using learning to use it well. You should check out the Behringer XM8500. $23 and it's really close to the SM58. I've used them for open mics and field podcasts. It's the best budget mic I've ever used.
The SM58 sounds best. The SM57 is second best. The PodMic sound so tinny and nasally it is awful without any processing. This means it is wedded to the RODEcaster Pro to make it useful. The SM7B, SM57, and SM58 sound nearly exactly the same when used with a Foam Screen. The SM57 is useful if you want a more airy upper end such as if your voice has more bass.
Call me crazy but I think podmic sounds the BEST. I know it sounds so flat but that also means it's easier to eq and mix. It's sounds RAW. And that's good for my use.
This ridiculous. You sound just like photographer/youtuber Sean Tuck, except he has a British accent. Even your names sound similar haha. That said: I appreciate the videos man! I was looking for a mic to conduct/record phone interviews without breaking the bank, and wasn't prepared for the market/jungle I was about to get completely lost in. This vid helped me decide to get the SM58. Thanks!
Hi Tom, thanks for this video! Do you find the Rode PodMic to have decent gain on its own when you use it with the Rodecaster Pro? Or should the PodMic be used with a Cloudlifter or Fethead? I've read several reviews on Amazon saying the PodMic is too quiet and really benefits from using an amplifier. I'm wondering what your experience is, thank you!
It would definitely benefit from a boost of some kind, but I don’t personally use one just because I like to keep my setup as simple as possible and didn’t want another thing to plug in and deal with.
I like the sound of the SM57 & the SM58 in that order. I don't like the sound of the Rode PodMic at all. Overall Rode makes good mics but this one sounds thin.
I like the sm57 the most. it seems to be very balanced without eq in low and high end. I think the sm58 sounds great to but there's just something about it that I don't like and I can't figure out for the life of me what it is.
Finally someone said it so I didnt have to. Been looking for this type of comment. I think it's the Hollow Metal Capsule sounding tone heavy in the mids, that's how I describe it.
The Shure SM58 is a pretty "flat" mic, and the rode PodMic leans very hard on the higher ends. Condenser mics can be great choices too. The Lewitt LCT240 has a wonderfully crisp and punchy sound.
Hey bro, I am not sure if anyone has ever mentioned this factoid, but the SM57 is the official microphone of the Whitehouse. Tons of pictures on Google of Obama, Trump, etc using it. They always have two for redundancy, and of course they have the smart looking windscreens. 🤘
I can't believe people are so hung up on visuals I really can't. I mean but that's just me. Sound is subjective but if you ask me both of the shore microphones had a more full body tone than the pod mic. Yes the pod mic looks cooler but if you're doing a straight-up podcast what difference does it make? And even if I was streaming I still wouldn't care. The superficiality of it just blows me away. but like I said that's my opinion I do kind of understand where people are coming from
It all depends on the needs, but I agree that with mics, the sounds should come first (logically). But also, I recently got a Shure Super 55 which looks absolutely awesome (and sounds good too) 😁
@@tombuck that's fair enough. You also have to keep in mind my perspective comes from somebody who's visually impaired. My eyes don't work near as good as my ears do and for me sound quality is Paramount. I've been a semi-professional musician for the past 30 plus years I never really cared what anything looked like I just wanted it to sound good
Bro, thanks a lot for this video. Im about to start a podcast and right know im about to buy the equipment, and as im going to buy the rode casterpro, i wanted to buy 2 rode podmic, but it turns out that I already have one shure sm58 in the house (didnt know), so, im just gonna buy one shure sm48, and i'll start with those, I need two mic's because im interviewing people. Regards from México!
I was looking for a comparison video, lol and behold, you have one! Me again and yes I found that the sm58 sounds better in a long be setting. So I think I won't upgrade to the podmic cuz it doesn't seem like an upgrade. Perhaps a procaster in the future. I do have a sure super 55 which I love as well but it's really pricey and I wanted one for the look being am old school Elvis and rockabilly fan
Very few things can top the "cool factor" of the Super 55. But yeah, the 58 is incredibly versatile. I've always thought of it as kind of like a Fender Strat. If you ask someone who knows nothing about guitars to imagine a guitar, they'll probably think of a Strat. If you ask someone who knows nothing about microphones to imagine a mic, they'll probably think of the SM58.
Do you recommend having two different branded mics when having 2-3 guests using the Rodecaster Pro? Im getting mixed reviews on whether this is vital or not. I'm still pretty brand new and not too tech savy. Also- do you have any tips regarding how to export recording into Garageband to tidy up with small edits? Sorry! Lots of questions! Your channel has helped me tremendously so far :)
Hi Cassie! As far as mics go, I would just use whatever you have to get started. I think common advice is to match mics whenever possible, but you can always play with the settings to make different mics sound good together. Start simple and upgrade as necessary. For GarageBand, you should be able to drag the file directly from the memory card into a new project. If you’re recording with multi track, then all of the separate tracks should show up.
Rode is good when speak fixed distance, it is quite sensitive when speak different positions. SM58 sounds in this test really nice, but not in all settings. I think Rode podmic might get some help from wind filter. I have many of Rode podmics and not yet find decent wind filter, only couple really large.
I keep looking for evidence of a $100-something dynamic that holds a candle to the SM7B, and I can't find it. In the meantime, an SM57 with A81WS windscreen and a bit of EQ is better than okay. Nice review thanks.
Hi there Tom. Hope all safe and well on either side of blue wall. Can I thank you so much for your fantastic tutorial videos. They have been tremendous help. This morning got possession of the pod mic for my rodecaster pro. Had been using a Shure SM58 and no problem. However now I have a hum when I plug in my headphones to front socket. It registers on the levels but I don't want to use Noise Gate. I have set my mic to pod mic setting. Could it be the cheap headphones I am using or would changing to headphone socket at rear make a difference at all. Thanks in advance. John
Congrats on the new gear! There shouldn't be a different between the front and rear headphone outputs, but the Rodeacaster's headphone preamps are always a bit noisy (although you said this is registering on the levels meter). I wold start be replacing headphones/cables to see if you find the culprit there.
I like the podmic, but the sound sounds so thin to me without processing. The processing makes it sound a little bit too boomy, but it's still pretty workable. SM57 might sound the best, SM58 sounds great too.
Great video, cheers. Can the Shure SN58 be used on a boom as a two mic set up with two talents or does it need to be in close proximity with the speaker's mouth? Thanks in advance.
As a dynamic mic, it's definitely meant to be close to the speaker for best results. Take a look at something like the Rode NTG2 shotgun mic (or similar shotgun options) if you want to pick up sound from a bit of a distance.

@@tombuck Great! Yeah, I can set this up as audio input. Sounds great with the SM58.
beta 58a please
The SM57 is internally identical to the SM58. In fact the SM57 is the official vocal mic for the President Of The United States.
I knew the White House has used them for years, and always found that super interesting. So I guess the only difference is the pop filter?
@@tombuck Correct. The internal electronics are identical. The only difference is the integral windscreen.
Tech Gadget Reviews i‘d get the sm57 with a windscreen, it won’t disappoint you
The sm57 with the pop filter looks very professional, I love it
Me too! Something about it creates a really fun design.
57's are an absolute workhorse. There's almost nothing you can't do with them. I "upgraded" to a podmic from my 57 and I'm selling the PM for another 57.
It is a really tough mic to beat. Definitely a reason it has the reputation it does.
If you want a budget sm7b, throw the a55 shock mount and the a81 windscreen on an SM57. Put a fethead on it to warm up the tone if you want to get even closer.
SM58 hands down. cant beat the classic vintage SM58..
57 is just as good
Exactly, the 58 is the best.
I don’t k ow any mic that can compete with the overall versatility of the 58. It’s so good!
SM57 has been official mix of POTUS since it’s introduction I believe, so I think it’s definitely a vocal mic as well
As a DJ, my go to is a 58 and I think it sounds great as a podcast mic as well. I noticed myself falling into a trap of falling for the hype of the rode, which is awesome, but I already own the 58. You helped me feel better about sticking with a 58 and saved me $100!!!
The 58 is just so so good. 😎
The Enthusiasm Project nice to see people engaging with their audience. Makes you an actual human! Keep up the awesome content!
I wish the PodMic has the 57's sound 🤤
This video helped me make a decision finally to go with SM58 as my first setup after a couple hours of research! Thanks so much!
Great mic- you'll love it!
Try beta 58 too
Which audio interface do you use with the SM58, if I may ask?
This is a solid video and basically the conclusions I've came to after a few days of research. For guitarists/musicians, a SM57 is worth having as you can double as an instrument mic, but I agree for podcast/voice-over specific people, the Podmic or SM58 is the way to go.
I'm glad we're on the same page! It makes me feel slightly less crazy.
...unless it just means we're both crazy people 🤔
Thanks for this one. I have been using the 58 on my channel...but Ive been considering switching to the rode mic.
They both sound good...but being able to use the 58 without a stand is a pretty big benefit that I didn’t think about. 👍🏻👍🏻
I have an SE V7 that sounds really good for a podcast vocal scenario.
Funny this showed up in my recommended today. I just bought the 58 for that same reason...PODmic back ordered forever.
The 58 is dang good. 😎
Lol...yeah, the PodMic sell out pretty fast
That SM7b with a killer preamp is my dream date...
I'm going to agree... the 58 sounds the best especially with the windscreen. Makes me wonder what the Rode would sound like with an outer windscreen.
That PodMic preset makes the Rode sound a lot more like the SM7b.
The 58 is just so dang good it’s hard to believe.
Unbelievably helpful. Totally made it easy. Love that you did right out of box which I’m looking to do b/c I also love simplicity. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
I really like the PodMic when you aren't directly on it. Its very harsh when too close. When you back off even just a few inches, it sounds perfect. I am not a sound engineer or audio expert, just what I've noticed. At 1:40 for example.
Good to know! 👍
Great review. In Studio with processing to my ears Pod Mic is nice and clean. SM57 very muddy and the SM58 would be a great choice for on the road.
Wow thank you! And I thought the same thing: that mics like the SM58 were somehow only for stage, but they definitely work in a studio situation.
Starting with a 57 to podcast is solid cred. A lot of older audio guys tend to gravitate towards using nothing but a 57.
It's a really great mic. I think it was a seasoned vet who recommended it to me in 2005 to record guitar amps and it's still going strong.
I really love the 57 for vocals once a windscreen is added. Super rad for beatboxing 😁
Thanks for putting this together Tom! We use the SM58's with our unit but it's a new purchase so still dialing things in - what do you find yourself setting gain at (on average) for your uses with the SM58?
With the Rodecaster, I’ve had the gain set to 35 👍
The SM58 is more clear and a bit louder.
The Shure's have a much more neutral/warm sound than the Rode. I love the PodMic, but it doesn't sound great on every voice.
Thanks for the overview! i really feel like the podmic is better with a windscreen and if you work the mic a lot closer... it really comes alive at close distances
no its sucks , i have it , go to the shure
I enjoy your reviews Tom. I really like the SM58 too
My microphones of choice are the Shure 55SH and Shure SM58 for stadium announcing for football and SM58 arena announcing for volleyball and basketball...I use the Shure 55SH for auditorium emceeing and vocals.
I bet the 55 sounds awesome in an auditorium setting!
awesome review. Thank you! You answered my question about the SM58. Purchased! 🙏
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it! It’s definitely legendary for a reason.
So I got it and found the sound output is super low, when plugged into my Focusrite (1st generation) on Logic Pro. My pencil condensor mic has much higher output levels. Do these SM58s need a preamp in order to have higher output?
Super helpful! Love your clear and calm style of reviewing + your personal approach to it! Jesse
Thanks Jesse!
SM58 sounds soooo GREAT!!
Thank you for doing this!!
What are your settings on the RODE caster?
Your BASS is so smooooth
Wound up listening to this entire video
Thanks 4 sharing!!
CoachDeb
Thank you! for this video, everything was set to default. But there's a new firmware update that really lets you dial in every part of the sound!
Neat Accessory to recommend to RODE- a USB to XLR Adapter....so USB mics can be used on the RodeCaster Pro.
I would love to use my Yeti with the Rodecaster 👍
Hi, what about the shure beta58a? I know it's over 100usd but I think it sounds a little bit better than the sm58 and I love it for podcast, specially for my interviewees. I record everything on the tascam dr-60 to have a quick setup to travel. to go to people offices and to use it on camera with a tascam dr10x. Thanks for the video!
I haven’t used it personally, but it sounds like a winner (pun intended).
You nailed it with a great topic. Unfortunately no matter how awesome the 2 Sure mics sound unexpected plosives did occur. My $ purchase decision will go to the Rode. It was a flatter sound but didn't show plosives. Well worth the $100 without purchasing pop filters.
All sound GREAT! I use a SM58 for my vid recording on iPhone utilizing the iRig PRE HD. THANKS for the very informative comparison vid!!! :)
You’re super welcome 👍
Hi, I want to record my written poetry professionally. Suggest me a good audio interface and microphone. But my room is not sound proof. The sound from outside comes inside our room. If I use Audio Technica 2035 mic and Shuru SM 58, then what will be the difference between the two? And which audio interface would be better for ShureSM 58. In which there is no noise and the quality is also good at the time of recording.
Honestly, a solid USB mic might be the way to go. The Sennheiser Profile is my favorite recommendation. Then you don't need an interface or anything like that.
I know there’s a lot of fans of the Podmic, but to my ears the SM58 has a richer, fuller sound as is, with out any EQ. Still an amazing mic.
It’s really tough to go wrong with the SM58 👍
Agree! It's richer
So you seem to love the 58; but you have 2 Rode PodMics. Just got my Podmic and love it! This was a great review. The SM7 intrigues me but as you said, you can have 4 Rode Podmics or 2 Podmics and a 58 and a 57! Again great review
Glad you liked it! The 58 is wonderful, but I do love the PodMics combined with the Rodecaster.
The Enthusiasm Project Not to mention, the Rode has the cool factor for podcast/broadcast look!
Much better than expected.
It's definitely a mic that you can't go wrong with. 👍
Shure Sm58 sounds better, but for my stream in going to go with the rode podmic because it looks better, and for streaming looks do matter
It’s true, visuals definitely matter
@@tombuck Not my first choice would be looks.
I personally couldn't give an airborne rodents posterior about visuals I want people to hear me clearly I want people to be able to understand what I'm saying. Looks are superficial compared to audio quality but that's just my opinion.
i bought a sm57 for voice because i think it gets lower and more baritone singing and what i like to sing
The SM58 is woefully underrated in the podcasting world.
I would get used to hearing whatever anyway and then that would be fine.
ua-cam.com/video/EPDfTtQvdZ8/v-deo.html
Procaster sounds like lots of background noise there?
All that being said, the best results I’ve ever gotten have been front shotgun mics like the NTG2, even though this isn’t technically the correct application for them.
love your v logs. I purchased pod mic last year.
I bought an SM57 for voice. It sounds fairly similar to the SM7B and it looks a lot better on camera with the wind screen than the 58 (which matters to some people).
I really like the 57 with a windscreen 😎
The sm57 with A81WS windscreen is better than anything in the 100$ range (my opinion)
It’s really a great combo.
The podmic to my ear does not sound very good due to its anemic bass response.
Exactly. I think my Audix f50 sounds better than both for half the price of EITHER!
I'm glad I read the comments cuz that's exactly what I think it sounds cheap
The popping with the SM58 was a little disturbing Tom. I've not heard the SM58 pop before on other reviews. What was happening? I love that mic
Probably just poor technique on my end 🤷🏻♂️
Wow! Thank you so much for the kind words, and best of luck on your new podcast! How awesome 🙌🏼
@@tombuck thanks 🙏 maybe one day we will collaborate 😃 did you ever make a video about your video gear and process? Would love to watch it... If not please make one for the novice 🙏
My 10,000 subscriber video has a behind the scenes of my personal process, and I also made a studio/gear tour video several weeks ago 👍
SAMSON Q2U is also a good budget option ✌️
True! Samson makes great mics.
The RODE WS2 Windscreen fits on the podmic
Really? Very cool...
I absolutely love the podmic and it's so affordable! I purchased 1 and it was on backorder for almost 3months LOL so I'll be ordering 3 more 👌👌👌👌
Me too! My first one took two months, then I ordered a second in May that arrived in November 😬
@@tombuck I'm pretty sure because your videos are the cause lol they need to sponsor you 😘 btw when I take the mini sd card out do I have to use any other app or site to get the recordings?
Once you put the card in your computer you can just open it, and all the podcast recordings should be right there.
@@tombuck awesomee
Fun Fact: Simple EQ changes in the PODMIC without a cloudlifter makes it sound identical to the SM7B. Dont waste your money
waht are the eq changes to make
im pretty sure Alpha Gaming did that in his podmic review.
For it was the PodMic i got for myself, because I'm looking forward to livestream in the near future and then the looks of the microfone are pretty important, because the viewers can see the mic all the time
The PodMic is the perfect mix of quality sound, good price, and visual appeal. 👍
Thank for the recommendation! I've had good luck with Behringer stuff in the past 👍
@@tombuck and of course I meant Rodecaster Pro. Damn autocorrect!
I have a SM57 w/screen like the gentlemen in the video. A SM58 and 2 8500s. And honestly all sound comparable after slight eq changes.
The 58 really sounds terrific!
Call me crazy but I think podmic sounds the BEST. I know it sounds so flat but that also means it's easier to eq and mix. It's sounds RAW. And that's good for my use.
I love it.
Very helpful review. Thanks, Tom.
Glad it was helpful! Hopefully you can find the mic that's right for you.
This is an awesome video. Price vs value my winner is sm58. Thank you for the Vid.
Thanks!
I need to go check out Sean and see the Buck Tuck connection.
The 57 really is a stellar mic, especially with a nice windscreen on it for voice.
Finally someone said it so I didnt have to. Been looking for this type of comment. I think it's the Hollow Metal Capsule sounding tone heavy in the mids, that's how I describe it.
Personally for me, I really hate that low end bassy sound for mics. Any recommendations?
The Shure SM58 is a pretty "flat" mic, and the rode PodMic leans very hard on the higher ends. Condenser mics can be great choices too. The Lewitt LCT240 has a wonderfully crisp and punchy sound.
@@tombuck I honestly like the high end sound of the pod mic. I don’t think a condenser would be good in my case due to how my keyboard clacks
The SM57 sounded the best not Shure why but I like it!
Nice 😬
They are actually the same mic, except for the windscreen of course. They also have a built in shock mount, inside! Legendary.
Nice pun, overused, but I appreciate it.
@@JMRSplatt different frequencies, sm57 is flat like the sm7b.
Hey bro, I am not sure if anyone has ever mentioned this factoid, but the SM57 is the official microphone of the Whitehouse. Tons of pictures on Google of Obama, Trump, etc using it. They always have two for redundancy, and of course they have the smart looking windscreens. 🤘
That’s actually where I got the idea to get a 9p degree adapter for mine because their cable management is always on point 👌
@@tombuck Nice! Yes, if only the White House always has it's anger management down as well as it's cable management. 🤘😉
Glad it helped! That sounds like an awesome setup to get started. The 58 is a really stellar mic 🎤
Nice job! It sounds like you were working the Shure mics s little closer than the Rode. Is that accurate?
If I was, it wasn’t on purpose- I tried to keep everything as consistent as possible.
I think its because the rode is positioned a little lower than the others...
@@tombuck Thank you!
Rode is good when speak fixed distance, it is quite sensitive when speak different positions. SM58 sounds in this test really nice, but not in all settings. I think Rode podmic might get some help from wind filter.
I have many of Rode podmics and not yet find decent wind filter, only couple really large.
Someone just recommended the WS2 as a wind filter, but I haven’t tried it yet.
I keep looking for evidence of a $100-something dynamic that holds a candle to the SM7B, and I can't find it. In the meantime, an SM57 with A81WS windscreen and a bit of EQ is better than okay. Nice review thanks.
To me, the sm58 sounds fuller better, the wind filter for the RODE Podmic is the RODE WS2 and you should also check the MXL BCD-1.
Thanks for pointing me towards the right windscreen!
Great video. What software do you use to record your videos?
I like the podmic, but the sound sounds so thin to me without processing. The processing makes it sound a little bit too boomy, but it's still pretty workable. SM57 might sound the best, SM58 sounds great too.
Great video, cheers. Can the Shure SN58 be used on a boom as a two mic set up with two talents or does it need to be in close proximity with the speaker's mouth? Thanks in advance.
As a dynamic mic, it's definitely meant to be close to the speaker for best results. Take a look at something like the Rode NTG2 shotgun mic (or similar shotgun options) if you want to pick up sound from a bit of a distance.
wow the 58 sounded great
Do you need a cloudlifter with the SM58, or it doesn't need it?
It really depends on your interface/mixer, but generally speaking I would say you can get by without one.
The SM57 with windscreen is the mic the US Presidents have been using for decades. FYI it’s not just an instrument 🎤
It's a VERY versatile mic.
Rode WS2 fits rode podmic perfectly
Throw a 609 in there by Sennheiser I think they sound pretty good just a little different then the Shure capsules and transformer @ the same price
Sennheiser really does make some excellent mics!
