Fly Tying "He h'ATE Me Caddis!

- In this video, I'm going to show you how to tie the "He h'ATE Me Caddis"...the "H" is silent lol! It's a super simple, yet effective emerger pattern that was based off the '"Holy Grail" The grail is a great pattern but I wanted an unweighted version so I made a couple material changes. What I came up with, is a fly that is highly effective and super simple to make. This is definitely one of my "go-to" patterns on the White River but I fish it all year on of my road trips. It has caught trout in Wyoming, Colorado and the Driftless. My favorite method, seen in part 2 of the "White River" video from May 2020...link below...is as a dry/dropper! But I also fish it as a tandem behind a beadhead fly! Materials shown during the video!

That fly is a thing of beauty. A fish magnet for sure. Caddis patterns take up a lot of real estate in my fly boxes. Nice one !
Thanks man, been good to me for sure. Same here, caddis and mayflies are probably the 2 that come out of my box the most! Simple to tie, they catch and easy to modify!
Thanks for getting me interested in tying. Not as hard as I thought it would be and pretty therapeutic. Flies like these that are “simple” but killer fish catchers are exactly what I like to tie.
Very nice. Simple and effective and definitely something you can tie on the road.
Definitely what I was going for!
Another functional fly using few material’s. Nice!
FYI. I tied a few of these in 12 to 20. I fished Eleven Mile Canyon. Used them as a dropper below a caddis. The trout couldn’t get enough of this fly. The 18s worked the best. Mid June trip to Colorado.
Awesome!
Appreciate ya, thanks for sharing it. I love the White River, good luck 🍀👍
Happy to do it!
Fantastic content Drew!! Keep it up, it's just great. Many thanks
Thank u much!
I was listening to a podcast about the tail waters in AR. Living in the west, I'm pretty spoiled with access to many famous locations within a 3 hr. drive. However, learning more abou these tail waters, I certainly want to head that way!
We're definitely fortunate to have a quality fishery but I'll echo what many others say...the never ending battle to build homes/boat docks along our waters takes away from the experience a little!
Do more of these tying vids please!!
Will add some more for sure!
Really like the fly tying. Been trying to get into this. Going back to the White River this summer.
It's frustrating in the beginning but then it grows on you. It gives me a way to be on the water when I can't!
Hitting the White in Arkansas this May. Looks like an excellent fly. Will tie a selection for my trip.
Good deal, hope it puts a few in the net for you!
Nice fly pattern 👍
Been good to me!
Is this name an XFL reference???? Incredible name.
Nice tie, need to try it. The z lon can represent the caddis' legs.
Simple is always better, more durable and work. Fancy flies don't catch many fish before they fall apart in my opinion. Trout for most situations don't have all day to inspect either. Although sometimes it seems like they do! Lol. 👍👍
Hella buggy! 🔥 🎣
Nice pattern. thanks.
Nice drew. I created a fly years ago similar to that one. It has caught a lot of fish for me. Excellent pattern. 👍👍👍👍.were those scissors you were using dr slick?
The satisfaction I get from tying my own flies is just a little less than catching on my own creations lol! Good eye, they are indeed!
Excellent cutting tool to have. All tiers should have a pair or two.
Good looking fly, kind of like a soft hackle is right.
Thank u, I dig soft hackles!
What vise do you use or recommend? Thanks for the great videos!!
Thank u. Got you in the other but I dig my peak rotary!
I have been watching you fly fish in Colorado. What flies do you recommend? I will be heading to 11 mile canyon in June and going to areas around Buena Vista.
I'd have mayflies, stoneflies, and caddis...in nymph, emerger and dry! Plus streamers!
Great looking pattern. Have you seen any similar patterns available commercially that closely resemble this? I don’t tie! Thx Drew!
Honestly haven't looked at commercial flies in a few years...but A beefy soft hackle or even a hares ear would work, could cut any tailing fibers but the fish probably won't care. Lots of caddis patterns but most have a bead. I'll scan rainey's and see what I see...
Yep, rainey's has a hares ear sh and an airhead caddis (glass bead) both look like they would be a good substitute.
@@LooknFishy Drew, you’re so generous with your time and knowledge. Thank you!
Happy to help!
What do you use as your dry dropper ?
Top shelf hopper pretty much my go to dry!
Have you ever done this as a dry fly version?
I seldom tie flies. I prefer buying them from local fly shops.
I love tying...keeps me connected to the water, when I can't get out. Plus, a lot of times the nearest fly shop is hours away. I could order online...but the reality of it is, I dig everything about it. I bring my kit on my road trips and recreate what I see on the water!
