I agree completely. Most of the time, trophies show you something that you wouldn't have seen otherwise. And you really feel like you've experienced everything the game has to offer once you get the platinum, or all achievements. I'm an enthusiast of video games, but I understand that not everyone cares about the same things you or I do. It's just a simple pass time for them.

For me trophies are a digital proof of your gaming history , what did you play and to what extent are you playing your games.
before the age of trophy hunting and achievements , you could be the best gamer in the world , playing the hardest games and completing them to 100% but no one will know about it other than yourself , now there is a proof for everything and that's why i love trophies.
you can also learn about any gamer a lot just by looking at their trophy list , even if they don't hunt for trophies that much , you can still see what kind of games they are playing and if they are completing their games or just playing for a bit and move on to other games.
trophies give a lot of info about any gamer and that is one of the big reasons i love them.

It's videos like this why I've started to not like bringing up that i'm a trophy hunter. People just always get the completely wrong idea about it.
Yes, to be completely upfront, I'm a trophy hunter. Reaching arbitrary completion benchmarks are something I do on the regular. I also primarily play RPGs. And these are often 50+, 100+, and even 200+ experiences at times. And yes, these are all games I go out of my way to platinum/complete.
I do it cause I enjoy it. I'm a semi-completionist by nature so I feel compelled to do so one way or another. I never use it as a means to try to brag or act superior cause at the end of the day, it simply is just a niche hobby inside of another hobby. Like speedrunning, challenge runs, restriction runs, etc.
While there are drawbacks, I've genuinely enjoyed playing many games more as a result. Discovering more aspects or content I otherwise would have missed, getting urged to play in different ways, even undergoing challenges that really test my skills and the satisfaction of overcoming them, etc.
So that said, of course it's not going to be a method of play everyone will enjoy. Much less have the time or dedication to do so, something most people are better off or should be placing elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with that. Play a game to the limit you feel is most enjoyable and reasonable to you.
But at the same time, as mentioned already, I also feel like I can no longer be open about being a trophy hunter or that I try to fully complete games. This sort of activity is seemingly heavily frowned upon now and is often met with dismissal or even outright hostility. I just...want to enjoy games in my own way, why is that treated so offensively?

Being a trophy hunter one very good reason I play and the one of the reason Nick Ar hunts trophies is not only because it's so rewarding but it makes us play the game in ways we otherwise wouldn't have and it gives so much more value to the game.
Of course there are tons of games with grindy platinums so I tend to go for games I have heard of, games that I like to play and rarely do I check about the trophies before buying them. Another main thing to point out is that most of the trophy hunters, including myself, play a game of their choice, enjoy it and theeen do we try to platinum it. If it's too tedious we should just drop it and move on. If you are so worried about leaving a game not platinum then you have bugger problems in ur life.

I usually go by this thesis:
    > Play the game
    > If I enjoyed the game, attempt to 100% it and get the platinum
    > If the platinum is not fun/extremely grindy don't bother
    > If the game is shit but the platinum is easy, again, don't bother
I've got 55 platinum trophies over the course of about 15 years, and by far the worst platinum I ever got was Crash Bandicoot 4. Took me months. Don't know why on earth I even bothered.

    Hi Lewis.
I myself am a trophy hunter and have been following your current channel as well as your sister channel WumpaLewis. I’d like to answer some of the questions you brought up as to why I trophy hunt.
    1. Video games are expensive, so I trophy hunt/100% complete games to get the full mileage out of the games I buy. If I don’t complete or platinum a game, to me it feels like lost money. I mean, yeah, that sounds ridiculous. As long as I have fun (which in most cases I do), then the price of the game shouldn’t matter. But I also 100%/platinum games as a way of thanking the developers of the games for putting all their hard work into making the games we play.
    2. Trophy hunting to me is mostly fun imo, but it does have its moments of frustration. Recently I got the platinum to Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier (I don’t recommend this game), but I originally wasn’t going to be able to get the platinum because my game kept crashing in a specific area no matter what, so I had to change the language setting on my PS4 and start the game over just to get the platinum. This highlights some of the issues with trophy hunting, that sometimes you need to do work arounds that you shouldn’t have to do in the first place.
    3. I understand the frustration with difficulty related trophies not being available until you unlock harder difficulties. This was most common in the PS3 era. Games like Uncharteds 1-3 didn’t have the Crushing difficulty available at the start because you needed to finish the games on the Hard difficulty first. Same thing with The Last of Us and its Survivor mode. They fixed this on the rereleases on PS4 so that you can stack the trophies more easily. It’s just an unnecessary hassle for trophy hunters.
    4. Despite all that, as a trophy hunter, the best part of my hobby is that I have the freedom to choose which games I want to platinum and which ones I don’t. If I want to go for an easy platinum like Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (or Sly Raccoon), then I totally can. If I want to go for a more difficult platinum like Rayman Legends, then I can if I put the effort into it. But if there’s a game I don’t want to platinum, then I just don’t do it. There are actually very few platinums I regret getting (looking at you Knack 1), but there are also very few games I haven’t gotten the platinum to that reside on my list of games to this day.
    5. I’ve had my fair share of BS trophy moments and they’re not fun, but I personally feel satisfied/relieved once I finally earn said trophy and move on.
To me, trophy hunting has its ups and its downs, but it’s a hobby I’m quite passionate about. Some people don’t want to trophy hunt, and that’s ok too because no one is forcing anyone to do anything. But I have a different sense of value when it comes to the way I play my games.
I am EcoFreak, and thank you for listening to my TEDTalk.

I go for platinums for games I really love. If I just can't get enough of them, and there's not a lot left to do i'll try to get the platinum. And it feels really rewarding when you eventually get it. I'm a big ratchet and clank fan for example, so like any other collectible you'd get from something you like, I'd like to get every ratchet and clank platinum.

He did everything like that, school, chores, life… but in his games specifically I think it’s not even rewarding to a certain point it’s just a thing these people have to do, “ see it through to the very end” and not many people simply getting through is “ winning”.

I'd say I play in a slightly similar way to you regarding this.
I only platinum games I truly enjoy and love and if there are no grindy/bs achievements. Examples for me include Batman arkham series, Need For Speed Heat recently (100% both on steam and PS) and maybe my next one HellDivers 2.
In terms of why I go for them in the first place, I'd say it's usually because well designed achievements are given to you for easter eggs that the deves put in so it's nice discovering them or to aid you in exploring all that the game has to offer, and if I love the game I want to do that anyways.
Achievements for second playthroughs I only go for, again, on games I truly love. In the case of Arkham Asylum, i finished my first playthrough in 2015, and then came back to the game in 2022 and did the second playthrough + 100% because I loved the game so much. The grindy bit was the combat challenges but I see that as a way of aiming to really master the game mechanics.
I outright avoid bothering to get achievements for a game if it has bs achievements like that rope one you showed, if its multiplayer achievements and the servers are dead/inactive and if its a story game that locks you out of achievements past certain points in the story unless I can find ways to get past those locks.
Also a little thing I like for fellow multiplatform gamers out there, I like to track on www.metagamerscore.com

But the worst part is that every now and then I look though my trophy list and I see FFX's staring me in the face and I'm actually tempted by it to go back and grind thinking "it can't be that bad", but then I remember that I spent HOURS that could have been put into other games I've not played yet, been bored out of my mind just grinding and I didn't even complete one of the grids, never mind all 7.

For me it's just because i'm a collector/completionist. Even if there's not a trophy connected to it, I like to go for all the collectables and challenges in a game. I just love seeing the "144/144 statues found" or "all secret coins collected in every level" or "100% of time trials completed". The playstation trophy system is just that but with every game I like connected. Getting the trophy progress bar to 100% and adding another platinum to the list just rules that game completed in my mind. It's also like a form of respect I give to that game, grinding so it could be amongst the other games that got my platinum stamp of approval.

There is one exception that you mentioned and it's if they are trophy that are grindy for no reason (looking at you fortnite), I skip those grindy platinium

Normally I complete the main story but before that I try to complete all the side quests. After completing the side quests and the main story I try any minigames that I might've missed. After playing them for the first time I feel as if I've experienced everything the game has to offer and don't bother with Platinum Trophies unless I feel that it's something doable or easy. For example if there are only 2 or 3 trophies available that are "Kill X amount of enemies" or "Do Y for Z amount of times." I will consider it if it's something reasonable like that because at that point there's no harm in getting the Platinum. But for me if I do all the side quests and the main quest I consider the game finished.

If you genuinely enjoy a game then I think getting platinum is a good way to get the most out of it but as someone who will sometimes go for hard ones I’d say I like going for it because of feeling accomplished and I just like to add to the trophy collection there is something so satisfying about seeing the number of trophies go up and the completion of games
Also going for trophies gives me something to do if I’m not sure what I want to play I can just do more on games I’ve already played and still get more from it

Sometimes trophies (or platinums by that same metric) can serve as more of an incentive for me to want to play a game, but if I watch a platinum video on a game I’m curious about getting the platinum for and I know it’d be extremely difficult, I just won’t bother and will casually complete the game

  • @maybefaith23

I only tend to go for platinums (or in my case, perfect games, since I play games on Steam primarily) if it’s a game I already know I like a lot and that doesn’t seem to hard. Like I perfected Half-Life 2 and its first episode because HL2 is one of my favourite games of all time, and it doesn’t have too many achievements. The ones it does have are pretty reasonable, like going through Ravenholm using only the Gravity Gun. That level was literally made as a showcase for the Gravgun’s abilities, so doing so is fairly easy and in my opinion actually more fun than doing it normally. There’s also making it across the beach without touching the sand, which might sound like a tall order, but when you realise you spend 90% of that section of the game avoiding the sand anyway, it’s really not hard. Ep1 I did just because it’s essentially more HL2 and really short, meaning it has barely any achievements to speak of. The most well known one is the one you get for beating the game having only fired one bullet. That sounds hard, but given the game’s short length and the versatility of the Gravgun, it’s both fairly easy and really fun (similar to Ravenholm, I’d argue it’s more fun to do it that way). Carrying the gnome all the way through Ep2 though? Fuck that, I’m not doing that.

I find trophy/achievement hunting very fulfilling. I always have since I was little. And it's not about showing off or anything like that, it's about exploring more of the game that one might not have if not for a trophy or achievement highlighting it. And I love challenging myself.
I agree, some trophies are just needlessly tedious just for the sake of it. But do you know which kind that I *really* hate? Games that have a tiny multiplayer mode that a trophy expects you to grind the heck out of, but nobody plays online anymore, making it impossible to get the trophy. An old God of War game, Dead Space 3, and Tomb Raider 2013 comes to mind.

Particularly, in order for me to enjoi a game I'm playing for the first time, I can't think about trophies. Otherwise, I'll spend the entire run thinking about "I gotta do this to get that trophie", "maybe I'll have x trophies when finished" etc.
IF, and only IF i enjoy a game and want to complete it, I'll get about 70% of it's trophies. Not all of them, not too little to feel like I didn't enjoy everything to it's fullest, and not enough for me to get to those awful grindy trophies. I feel accomplished, so that's the sweet spot for me.

The longest it took me to complete 100% achievements (On steam) was 800h on Sword Art Online: Re Hollow Fragment. I don't regret it because I have no better things to do in life and I love the game. I have currently "platinum'ed" 69 games, and now I'm completing last achievements for Dusk and DRG.
The way you want to stay healthy while doing this is going through the game the first time without caring about trophies and only after first playthrough, start completing 100%.

I read some people here saying like getting the plat is experiencing everything and all but let me tell you, that not the case. Some games requires you to play them 2-3 times or even more just to get a trophy and then you will realize that you completed the game multiple times just for a trophy or to see a different ending which is 1-3 mins cutscene, I could’ve just went and saw that clip in UA-cam. Overall what im saying is I don’t mind grinding and time consumption what really bothers me is playing the game from start to finish over and over again just to see a cutscene or get an item that its too late to use.

EXACTLY! it's very case by case of course but true a good amount of the time. 100%ing a game is fully experiencing a game and it doesn't always correlate to a platinum. Also should clarify 100% as in experiencing all the major main and side content. Then like a "true 100%" would be actually doing everything including unecessary minor stuff like korok seeds in Zelda for example. I personally replayed the 2nd half of Nier replicant for its slightly different endings 3 times and boy it was NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. I wouldn't have done it if I didn't love Nier automata and it's world so much. Still didn't get the plat tho cause it had like 10 other tedious trophies.

I got 32 Platinums (on two different accounts), from my experience it depends on the game. If the requirements are balanced, it is worth it. If the requirements are ridiculous, like do near impossible challenges, finish over a dozen different scenarios in long games like Until Dawn, then it's not worth it. But if a Platinum is way too easy, it's not satisfying.
For example, getting a Platinum in Unpacking was way too easy it felt Meh, but when doing it in games I enjoy like Persona 5, Just Cause 3, or Infamous: Second Son, not only do I have fun, but also get rewarded for it.
However I wouldn't bother if a game asked me to pull some John Wick level of trophies. Sometimes it becomes too difficult it's not fun.

For me it really depends on the games i've platinum'd.
As you've said, there are really, really, really shity trophies out there.
But for me, it's the Experience as a whole.
For example, let's take hollow knight.
The 5th Pantheon is an absolute brutal challenge. But noticing you step by step improve your skills and at the end finally beating that challenge, that's a really good feeling at least for myself 😅
There are games, where the platinum makes the games even better (Sea of Stars). Where you get rewarded with really cool things for taking it on.
    But as i said before.
It just depends on ths game.
It's also helpful for me at least, to have this "goal" in front of me.
Before i've started hunting platinums, i've struggled even finishing a game in the first place.
Now i find myself discovering whole new genres becaus of it.
It's often a mixed bag, when you hit a really bad trophylist, but out of my 162 platinums i find maybe 15 where really shit.
For the rest i either don't mind them or i really enjoyed my time with it.

I have about 45 platinum trophies right now. If I don't like a game or the trophy list is too tedious, I play the game and drop it. I only pursue the platinum in games I really like, or maybe it wasn't great but I finished and had a few trophies to get the platinum. I have about 5 100% completions in Xbox as well. I think some people take it too far by creating separate accounts where every game must be 100% completed and all, but it's not that serious for me. I say go for it in the games you love but it's definitely not a requirement to enjoy a game.

As an elden ring player you should understand the most. Just because a task is challenging or tedious doesnt mean you dont enjoy the game youre playing. Its the same as speedrunning unless your like top 30 you dont gain anything even if you are top 30 you only get notoriety. Just because one task in the game is tedious doesnt mean youre gonna hate the game after you completed it. Sometimes the tedious stuff like collectibles is added lore making you appreciate a game even more.

As you describe this game, it does sound really tedious, but other games can have funnier trophies, like in GTA 5 "Discover the Fate of Leonora Johnson" you have to go around the map, finding letter scraps and piecing it all together, for a side mission to appear, and you get to kill Leonora's killer. You rock up at the dudes house, show him the picture of her, and shoot him.

I was quite into trophies at one point, I've never had many platinums. I think I have about 30 something plats at the moment.
Regardless, I started getting quite bored of actually collecting them after a while. Once you've got a certain amount of them, it just feels like "what's the point?".
I platinumed Horizon Zero Dawn and had to ask myself when I finished why I even bothered. The game was really boring to play, but the story was genuinely quite interesting.
So it kinda goes back to the comments shown during the video, where people weren't enjoying their experience. I kinda went through that myself. I've definitely had fun with certain games, when I got the platinum for them, but I've got to the stage where they ain't really that fun to collect anymore.
I always thought of them like stickers you collect, or trading cards, since they all have their own mini designs to them. So that was kind of part of it too.
Nowadays though, I don't feel any sense of accomplishment, reward or anything like that if I do get one. After 30, like I said, they lose their charm a little bit and feel pretty pointless. They're all the same in some kind of weird way to me.
