- I get asked a lot how to strum a ukulele / if you should use a pick to strum a ukulele /whether you should strum with your fingers or a felt ukulele pick. In this video I talk about the factors to consider with each option.

Hi guys!! I’ve gotten this question a lot so I thought I would make a video about it! If you want to try out the felt picks, here is the link to them on Amazon: amzn.to/2Gv4ARG
Also, if you like the ukulele I’m playing, it is from Flight. You can get 20% off any ukulele from goo.gl/CaumLe when you use the promo code ELISE. The model I have is DUC 323.
If you would like to check out the ukulele on Amazon, here is the link: amzn.to/2vGqjUM
However, the promo code only works if you purchase from the Flight website:)
Thanks for being here! I hope y’all have a great day!
Elise Ecklund tbh i strum with my thumb bc it's really easy, picks are like uncomfortable to hold for me
Elise Ecklund lik
i also use a thing called a thumb pick. you put it on your thumb and strum normally, it makes it a little louder and less painful on your thumb!
Elise Ecklund can you use plastic bags
i like can’t strum with my finger
iT KEEPS CATCHING AND MAKING MY FINGER BLEED
are you sure its an ukulele and not a steel string guitar. lol
Y S A B I A u SAME
DAMN SAME
@@GilbertFeathers keep going. It starts with pain and ends with ease. Unlike other instruments stringed instruments go from hard to easy. Piano goes from easy to hard. This is why people give up on guitar and ukulele. Dont give up. It will get easier. Just trust me.
@@kanavkohli794 I have proven to have more sensitive skin, I've been quite activelt playing ukulele for 2 years, it hasn't changed, I can strum without my fingers getting stuck or anything, but my finger still eventually get all scratched up and even bleeding if I play for like 2 minutes straight, I cannot do some techniques like the scratch- whatever its called - one because its just impossible for me.
I came to ukulele after I learnt guitar so it was very difficult for me to use fingers to strum but I felt like using a pick for ukulele doesn't produce natural sound. So I practice everyday strumming using my index finger (UA-cam tutorials helped) and now I can strum with fingers effortlessly.
That's awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It was also very difficult for me to use my fingers to strum going from guitar to ukulele, and I also had to practice until I got used to it:)
I don't have any nails, do you have advice for that?
I use a pick because I can’t strum with fingers, and I like the sound of a pick. I’m trying though!
gyuu Same!
@@giyu1195 acrylic nails
I think strumming with your fingers is easier idk why it just seems more comfortable to me
My fingernails are stumps so when I strum it hurts cuticles. But for me the pick or really any folded piece of paper helps my sound soooo much!
Same here❤️
Why cant i strum with my FiNgEr?!
sameee i keep bleeding since my cuticles always get hurt in the process but oh well, it’s worth it 😌
I agree with you
Okay, I thought I was the only one strumming down with the thumb and up with the index finger but now that you said some do too I rest calm...

yessss i do it too !!!
I don’t know how I’ve missed this on other uke vids but I never used to strum up with the pad of my index finger. I always strummed both up and down with my nail. I’m a total newbie and I couldn’t get the up strum to sound right. I tried strumming up with the pad of my finger tonight, slowed the island strum down a lot, and it worked! I’m so stoked! Thank you for the informative video!
I might be getting a ukulele soon. I’ve been watching your videos a lot lately, and I can’t wait to learn a few songs from your tutorials! They seem very helpful. :)
This helped so so so much! Thank you! As always I love your videos and how helpful they are!!
Yes needed this sm lots of love from a new ukulele player in Ireland xx
To my ears, the sharp defined point of the pick gives indvudual notes more attack. It makes chords sound harsher (not necessarily in a bad way) and there may be a bit more individual note definition in chords. Fingers have a softer and more mellow tone and have less attack on notes. If you're comfortable with both I think it just comes down to which sound you're going for and which best suits the song you're playing.
The difference I find between a pick and your fingers is the pick gives you a brighter/richer tone and finger picking gives you a little bit muffled/darker tone to it, although I do not play ukulele I play bass and bass is kind of like ukulele but 10× bugger and 15× heavier lol but I mostly finger pick and use pick only on a couple songs I do as well and bass solos I do as well ✌😉
I ordered some pics a week ago, should receive them soon!! I'm soooo excited to try it hahahah
This video was very useful. I learned so much from this video!
I'm trying to learn to use my fingers, but the pick does feel more natural since that's what I started with. I'm getting a good sound. Thanks for the video. I was wondering if I was weird for doing it. haha.
Awesome video! I play uke to so it's cool to know your opinion. Keep making awesome videos!!
thank you so much Elise this is really helpful !
Can you use plastic picks?
Also, how do you avoid you pick or finger catching on your strings?
you're my fav youtuber i watched your livestream last night and you named my uke denvor its so cute x
THANK YOU
so excited for sunday
Jamie Hargreaves fancy seeing you here m8
Hey elise
I love your channel so much and I actually started to play ukulele because of your videos
Thank you!! And that's awesome!! I'm so happy to hear that!!:)
Elise Ecklund QUEEN REPLIED TO ME OMG
Elise can you do a tutorial on diamonds by rihanna . I know that its an old song but other youtubers don’t explain how to do tutorials and you’re the only one that helps me understand. So if you could do it I’d really appreciate it 😊
Great informative video. Really well done!! THUMBS UP!!
Hello! :D ahhh I’m so excited to get my ukulele so I can finally learn :)
I’ve always used my finger. When I strum, I use the nail on my index finger to strum. I find that is sounds better. For some reason, I also strum with my finger on the guitar and I have a steel-stringed acoustic guitar.
I started off with a pick when I started to play the ukulele. Later on, I started to use my fingers to strum the ukulele since I was told strumming with the fingers would help you control the sound rather than having the same volume with a pick. I do recommend to strum with fingers
@@sandwichgod3687 same, i try so hard not to but i just can't stop, my fingers are aways bleeding because i only use my fingers to play the ukulele
@@sandwichgod3687 Same
Lol I had to my nails 😭
Love all your videos 😁😁
Great video! Can you please do a video on different finger picking patterns?
I think it is an art in itself, I could not strum with my finger very well, so picked up a felt pick and found that it was too stiff and kept wanting to slip out of my fingers. so I bent it backwards and forwards to loosen it up, and give it some movement when hitting the strings, that seemed to work, but I soon realised that I have to keep practicing with my index finger, and try to perscivere with it. what I found was your finger must stay in the same position and angle, so that your finger glides over the strings for a better sound, it was a struggle at first, but getting better now.
When I learned guitar years ago I could only play with a pick. Strangly though, now that I'm learning ukelele I cannot use a pick at all. It always feels like its gonna ping out of my hand lol. I saw a listing on amazon for leather picks. I might try them, but if they don't feel right for me I'll probably stick to finger strumming.
To me, it sounds like using the fingers has that more traditional ukulele sound like the Hawaiian folk music the ukulele is most often associated with, while the pick makes the tone sound sharper and brighter.
Hi! I’m a uke beginner, do you have recommendations for string brands and how to change them?
I bought my first ukelele second hand, and it has black strings and I noticed all of yours seem white or clear. Does changing them make a big difference in sound brightness/clarity?
Would love a video on this! Thanks :)
Can you do tips on fingerpicking? And could you do a review on the OMS04 Kia wood concert ukulele? You're amazing!
At 4:38, that type of strum with the pick sounded good, but so did the finger strum right after. I'd say they both have their place. The pick changes the whole feel of the song, in a good way.
that helped me alot. thank you
i'm a uke Beginner and my Index finger really hurts after two days of practicing.
Finally someone has made a video about this 😆
I needed this
Love you❤
Love you too!:)
Hey I'm gonna comment on every video of yours😂💞. Could you do tutorials of Michael Jackson? (Smooth criminal easy version?) Love ya
I strum with my middle finger unless i want to be quite, then i strum down with the pad of my thumb and up with the pad of my middle finger. This was a great video!😍😍💖💖 also, i think the pick sounds louder. Thats my opinion though. I like to use my fingers rather than the pick.
i also use a thing called a thumb pick. you put it on your thumb and strum normally, it makes it a little louder and less painful on your thumb!
This helps so much Elise! Thank you for being perfect! Speaking of which, could you do a Perfect by Ed Sheeran tutorial?
Anika Ganesh She did a ukulele tutorial for that song. You should check it out! 😉
LILY DA PINEAPPLE Uhh what.
Yay firs. Love you eliseeee❤️❤️❤️❤️
yayy
So, I tend to strum with my thumb because when I try with my index finger, it kinda gets caught on the strings. But, on a tutorial I watched, the guy said that when you strum with your thumb, you can't mute properly. Any advice for either muting while strumming with my thumb, or advice on strumming with my index finger?
Hey Elise, you always said we should check out colliscool, so I finally did and she is awesome!!!! thx!!!
but obviously you're my favorite!!
also, great video!
Thanks!! I'm so glad you got the chance to check out her channel!! She's great:)
i love your videos, you're amazing. i would love to see your tutorial of how to play i see fire by ed sheeran on ukulele, 'cause this is my fave song. i love you and actually you made me buy my ukulele and i love you for that because i love playing ukulele so thank you soooooooo much for that. all love from Poland
Elise I'd love to see an easy guitar tutorial of something from fob or p!atd. Preferably something from Mania of afycso ❤️❤️
when i first got my ukulele, it was a present, i started using a plastic pick because my mum got me a pick thinking it was needed. I did see many videos though and idk i think the plastic pick can damage your ukulele and i don't even like the sound of it so i tried strumming with my fingers and i got very much used to strumming with my thumb although i can strum with my index finger, i just find it less comfortable
Yeah, I don’t think plastic picks are the best, but they’re what a lot of beginners end up using because they’re more similar to guitar picks and they’re cheaper
Such a nice ukeeeeeee!😩😁❤️
Omg you are my favourite and by the way can you do a tutorial on Let It Go by James Bay
Thank you!!! I appreciate the suggestion! I will look into it:)
I’m starting the ukulele after coming from a cello background. I don’t like the pick but I keep trying to pluck the string when we did pizzicato. Hard habit to get rid of.
are you from Minnesota? Nice video, thansk for the help
I have a felt pick that came with my uke that I got for Christmas and honestly the pick is quite awkward for me. my guitar pick (that I lost so I'm using one of my brother's panic! guitar picks) was really strange for me to get used to as I played the uke first and with my hands, and the fact that the uke pick is larger, a different material, and thicker makes it even harder for me to get used to. I don't like it-and that's just my own opinion, but use whatever is comfortable for you!
Coincidentally, I agree with you. Nothing feels all that comfortable at first, but I despise the sound of the pick. I hate it so much that I haven't tried it yet because I'm already starting to get comfortable with using my fingers.
I use a normal guitar picks but ive been playing guitar since i was 6 years old and ive have learn how to controll the pick so it not hit the top of the body so it scratch so that a plus use what ever picks you like but you need to know how to controll it so you dont hit the top body on your UKE but ohterwise i play with my index finger and the normal guitar pick 71mm very soft but i hold it so close to my fingers so it a not a problem that i hit the top body on the uke. I am also a music teacher so my student know that :)
Hi i wish u read this i always miss youre live stream i mean i cant watch it because of the time when u film its night im my town so may download the live stream that u film and thank u
ever since i started i could never play with a pick because i liked to have more control over the volume. now that I play very often i keep hurting my fingers and bleeding 🤧 I just bought a ukulele for myself (i used the school ones before) and i got a pick.. tbh i still don’t know what i like more- the pick is painless but i can’t make the sound soft
You just have to get famillair with the pick I have used the pick since the beginning and it sounds the same 😂
Ruben Michels same!
I love plaing guitar whit shark fin pick and if i got my ukulele ill buy a lot of thin picks LIKE 0.30mm
The one that i am using the shark one is 0.50mm and its the best
hey can you maybe perhaps probably make a tutorial on mystery of love 💗💗💗💗
3:40 Riptide💕
I love so much you amazing
Would you be able to recommend a capo for ukulele?
I love that Flight uke so much, I want it to be my next child.
Thank you so much! Just wondering.. can you do a tutorial for Lost Boy by Ruth B?
I like to strum acoustic and classical guitars and ukuleles with my thumb downward and my index finger upward. It just sounds softer than using a pick and i have more control. But thats just me
When strumming with fingers do you use your fingernails or the skin? I want to learn uke but idk how my fingers would take it. I tried guitar and i got cramps. Is that normal..
Sorry this is so long .-.
Its actually your nails
i use a pick bc i have short nails…like i bite them badly short. so it hurts a lot
"Y'all"
I apologize for my english im french Canadian.I went in Honolulu 3 years ago and i met a old men playing a ukulele he told me that he played ukulele for more then 50 years.I asked him several question and when i asked him if it was ok to use a pick he told me that pick are for guitar and people who use picks on ukulele are just insulting the instrument and the tradition.I think the old man was over reacting but i do agree that ukulele should be played with fingers.
Your English is pretty good dont worry! Just one tiny mistake you used "men" instead of man! Hope you have a good day! :)
My girlfriend gave me a ukulele for my birthday. I’ve been watching some videos where other ukulele players say the best sound is where the neck and the body meet. They also said that when you strum over the sound hole it’s a more flatter sound. What do you recommend??
Personally, I use my thumb and index finger for softer strumming and a pick for louder/harsher strumming.
pleeeaaaseee make a tutorial on how to play closer chainsmokers on the ukulele, i always tried to play but couldnt find a good tutorial. I also learned my first ukulele song from u, and i really hope u can make a tutorial on how yo play closer.
i don’t know if i’m strumming wrong, but when i use a pick it felt weird to strum up and down ahaha :,-)
I learned to strum with my index finger. But I have really bad eczema and playing would cause bleeding. Tried guitar picks but I hated how loud it was. I guess I'll have to alternate fingers so they have time to heal.
I have that same pick!! Lol
I'm really late to this but is it bad if I use guitar pics on ukulele? I actually really like the sound and when I'm strumming with my fingers I press my index and thumb together and just strum with the nails...
I like my sound with the pick it hurts using my fingers and songs worse
I would buy a felt pick because my fingers hurts so bad :'''(

I strum with 3 fingers, I M A, which i think it gives a rich, pleasant sound because of the little echo that the two fingers make besides of one finger.
This was the day before my birthday
Elise, at school i have to strum with my index finger because we are playing a song for Christmas! I’m so stuck. It’s annoying strumming one way ur used to then learning a much complicating way...
I am having trouble with bar chords do have any tips on mastering bar chords?
Picks for guitars and fingers for uke
I got my ukulele today! Can you give me some tips on what to do? ❤️
infires man how’s the ukulele today?
Hello there I'm just wondering I play the uke and I only play songs with numbers is it okay if you could upload some songs with numbers.
I'm a new uke player. I feel kinda uncomfortable right now when it comes to playing with my fingers. I have a couple felt picks and I like to use those.
i don't like the sound when i'm strumming with a pick....but i can't strum with my fingers because after practicing for so damn long i still get suck at the strums! and that's so frustrating!
do u have any hints for people with this problems except practicing? because i did that and it's getting a lil better but after a few chords i get stuck again. i'm practicing for a half a year i assume.
i don't do strumming mistakes with my pick but as i said, i don't like the sound because it doesn't sound natural at all! ;-;
[sry for my bad grammar, english is not my mother language]
thanks if there are any hints for me and other people with the same problem!
Yassss
U are so awesome. I love you
I have that same problem with my pick - never sounds right. It always sounds too harsh, especially on the upstrum. I've tried felt. leather and plastic.
could you do a tutorial on picking please?
if you don’t have a felt pick, is it still okay to use a guitar pick? please help I’m a confused beginner lol
I use the soft part of my middle-finger and the side of my thumb
Please do a tutorial for

Finger picking is hard for me. 😖
How do u strum without catching your skin and while still strumming all 4 strings? My fingers skip over the strings or catch.
Pls do make it shine victorious tutorial plssss

Call me a weirdo but I use my pinky and my thumb to use the down down up up down up or other strums, not like a radical position but more like an alien finger sort of thing... I try to use my pointer and my thumb though so it's normal ish
I wish you could teach me how to play it’s so hard how did you selftought ugh this is so hard
Please Please Please ! Can you make n tutorial on All of the stars - Ed Sheeran !!!!
