They gave an interesting tidbit, that the overhead is so low, that anyone buying the game basically makes a profit. Also that it costs less to run than the chat box of guild wars 2
I'm a programmer and the GW1 team is who I looked up to for many years. Their level of efficiency and insanely good programming was awe inspiring. We still haven't seen an MMO since then that has the 2000+ skills and robust hero system that GW1 had. If you're a programmer you'll understand how batshit crazy that is to pull off.
@JJGlyph the server infrastructure they use to this day with gw2 is insane to me too, the fact that layers of maps can be spun up in new client versions while the old maps are slowly closed as the players are funneled into the new ones with no maintenance downtime is actually mind-boggling
@@JJGlyph I think also just the fact that so many builds were viable and specific builds for specific farms, content, locations, playstyles. Not even to mention the balancing of all of that shit. It's such an underappreciated game because it came out at a time when WoW was out and GW1 was marketed as an MMO instead of what it was, made it look like it wanted to compete with WoW when in reality it was something completely unique and different.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that in my opinion, it's the best game ever. Insane amount of options for skills and builds, allowing skilled people to solo and farm even endgame stuff. Beautiful music and scenery across the entire game with different biomes with a unique feel to each one. Great characters that stick with you (except Kormir, NOBODY LIKES YOU) , RIP Rurik the GOAT! I started playing a little before Factions came out and it was never replaced in my heart. Since then I started dabbling in Dungeons and Dragons and keep coming back to GW for inspiration. I was our guild’s dedicated flag runner. Crip shot ranger built for speed and harassment. Man I miss those days chasing each other around the guild hall waiting for worthy opponents.
I was just a simple forge runner at 10 years old. Ppl only paid after run about half the time. I think that's thats where my trust issues started. Also, random arena is the best part of gw
I have so much nostalgia for this game. I have played like 15 mmos in my life and GW1 story is the top of the list that i even cared about and that is only a handful of them... others you just rush through... this game and 2 you don't.
19yrs later and I still play this game almost daily. Thank you for making this video. It was masterfully done, and I always enjoy hearing how people view Guild Wars. ❤
they were three guild wars (that we know) in the guild wars time line. the third guild wars started in 1013 AE (after exodus) and ended with the searing of ascalon.
For some reason, Gw1 is really active again, I just started the game few days ago and there are lots of new players, my alliance chat and discord is full of new people. Yes, do this retrospective for other expansions too, it helps with my own playthrough. xD
You see an influx of players around festivals, and the anniversary festival ended a week ago. Either way still lots of people playing, not that you even need other players now with heroes.
I still play GW1 and i have almost 10k hours there. I just love this game. Please do Factions, as this is my favorite expansion. I loved Luxons vs kurzick war and I remember I was doing a lot of AB.
Hi there! Just found your channel and this video by accident.… I really felt that video, being someone who just came back to GW1 after a long time, I really felt many of your remarks concerning old memories … god that awfull Thunderhead Keep mission and unessary sacrifice after that. Personally, I would love to hear your take on the other expansion, although I agree, it is some work. Also, I have to agree with the clumsy but memorable story. The "read not tell or show" approach of GW1 really tells its age! If you are interested, I can really recommend the handbooks of the orginall game. Old school, I know, but a lot of context and lore for Tyria was given there. Either way, take my sub and like, and keep up the good work with work!
I loved GW! Played a bunch of meleemancer builds between Warrior/Monk/Ritualist offclass and it was a load of fun to buildcraft in general. That said, I think GW2 was a better game world overall. In GW3 my only few hopes are: 1) Bring back cross-classing in a limited fashion. For example- keep the current 3 traitline system, but make it so your third slot can EITHER be an elite spec OR picking a core traitline from another class. For example a condi Necro might pick Wilderness Survival from Ranger to gain the passives, Ranger Torch/OH Daggers skillsets, and Survival skills. 2) Expand on the event system to be more dynamic and impactful on the world. GW2 took the original public quests idea from Warhammer Online and greatly improved on it, but it needs one more solid iteration to feel truly engaging. 3) Bring back some of the open world difficulty from GW1. The pacing in the general open world in GW2 is fine, but it would be nice if every map had a higher risk/reward area to more closely resemble GW1. I recently came back to GW2 and am leveling a Condi Ranger (thus my above example) and while I'm having fun the overall ease of the world open world can make a lot of the traits/skills/etc. unnecessary since everyone just runs Berserker/etc, gear and steamrolls everything. Even just soloing veteran mobs in the open world? They just instantly melt. Anyway, this turned out to be more longwinded than I initially intended to just mention "It would be cool if GW3 brings back cross-classing" :)
Thirsty river, when starting off it was such a careful game of timing when to attack and kill the enemies fast enough to then rush to the priest and kill it before they revive their units.
Great sharing. But can you add a comment after you completed the whole expansion with comment “this is just the beginning of GW1 real fight”. It ventures you to form party with guild members and start to do speed clear. Each members skills is import to support the squad for high end game contents. To the extend to maintain specific skills could be up to 4 skills simultaneously without break. Some consumables are becoming necessity for game to proceed.
GJ playing this game in 2024. You should definitely go for Faction, Nightfall and Eye of the North. Faction and EotN are way before in my opinion. I always feel bad when I see new plyer trying the game with Prophecies because for me, it the one that represents the least what GW really is and how it plays today. Keep it up man !
Factions please! I still play GWs. I began in 2006 with Factions, which has a great learning curve. I think stayed on Shing Jea Island for almost a year, just putting around and making new characters. Also, it's about a pandemic and we just went through one of those. (Also, please don't jinx it by constantly talking about how the game may shut down. I would be devastated if that ever happened).
Doubt it shuts down any time soon, they have said in the past it costs them nothing to run the GW1 servers. I'm sure they still make money off GW1 with the sales of the games and micro transactions, Having GW2 and achievements tied into GW1 helps I'm sure for those that have to get all the achievements.
2024, still waiting for a modern gw clone... also: still 1 developer with 80% of his worktime for gw1 and the game runs on gw2 servers without any problems, so its gonna stay for long :)
03:20 "generic look", you mean European... seriously wtf 😒 im actually trying to get into the game since im a bit of a gw2 fanboy of course its really different but i am from that generation so i dont mind but im stupid so im trying to do legendary defender of ascalon on my first character who is a mesmer its a bit grindy, cant wait to finish it so i can play the rest of the game haha
@ShadoSpartan44 I would say it's far from the worst game ever. I got gw2 since it first came out and played off and on over the years. Very different from guild wars, upsettingly so in some ways, but wonderful in others. I did a recent re-playthrough and felt the power creep was too much, with too much emphasis on end game content. It seems to rush you towards the expansions now. I'd say GW2 isn't what it used to be.
the main issue of gw1 is these toxic people that pollute pvp and on the break time come on social medias to insult gw2 players. These are not welcomed in gw1 either, so ignore them in game.
3:00 - They have stated that the servers for GW1 are so inexpensive, that they'll probably never shut down as long as ANet exist.
They gave an interesting tidbit, that the overhead is so low, that anyone buying the game basically makes a profit. Also that it costs less to run than the chat box of guild wars 2
Anet is so real for that, despite their many failings
