Wow! This was honestly one of my first habits to develop and play songs like that. But when I did it my playing sounded bland and I stopped. But my ears are insane now.
This video is so great. I've been practising like this for a few months after spending many hours discovering the method you explained perfectly in 6 minutes 🤩 now I'm okay with melody, but do you have any tips on hearing the chords? It's hard to hear/remember bass lines and I find myself mostly guessing with the chords that are in the key :(
There are two ways that I’ve been having success here. One is to try to hear the high and low note and use the scale to try out different chords (generally used for harder chords). Alternatively, you can also hear how chords sound in a key (they all resolve in different ways too). This way works well for simpler chords for me. I use this app openear to train it but im sure other apps have chord quality exercises (also work with real songs). I’m learning too though, so this is just my experience so far
@bigalbbq8483 oh that makes sense! Very much appreciate the comment. I also use the open ear app and I can always hear which "chord function" they want, but I feel like whatever I hear in that exercise doesn't quite translate to real songs? I think the approach you mentioned of hearing the individual notes sounds promising to me. Maybe I'll try singing triads in chords and seeing if I can bridge the gap
@@nikcheung73 I have the same issue, in general connecting the apps to real songs is tough for me. It's been getting better recently just by trying to transcribe some real songs, but still takes a long time and I have to really try not to do the random guessing. I've been at this for about 9 months now, so maybe it's still just time and practice! (one tip I had for doing the chords was playing a triad on my instrument, then trying to hear the low note/high note and sing it and then check).

Question though, how do you know where in the scale is the root doing this method? Does it just resolve in a certain way that sounds right and you hope you recognize it?

That surely applies for natural and harmonic minor scales, but what about its modes ? Sometimes they sound a bit similar
Then you need to get used to sound of the mode, for example A major vs A Lydian is just one note difference, and getting yourself familiar with the sounding of that #4 and then try to sing both mode starting with the same note

I think my weak point js being able to find/return to the root from the identified note. In isolation, the note itself just sounds like the root. I guess when trying to pull from an existing song, the more notes help...but it feels like a chicken and egg problem
The note itself could be any note, that’s why you need to establish a key first, you can do it along with a song, or just a bass root note ringing etc.
