Listening to his music feels like putting on a weighted blanket and sinking into a comfy bed. This immediately ranks as one of my top 10 favorite Greg songs
You always want to go back to when you first discovered your favorite music so you can experience it for the first time again. He’s one of those rare artists whose entire catalogue i’ll listen to for the rest of my life. It’s such a rare treat hearing one of his songs for the first time, because I know it’ll be something I listen to forever.
I typically have a maybe 5 year arc on a specific band/musician until I feel a bit dated with the songs but not so with GAI. I'm so grateful I discovered his music. If only I'd seen him live before he toured with The Lumineers and have made his shows virtually unaffordable for me. (I say virtually because I can afford it, but I won't pay that price to see any musician ever)
@@bobsacamano4For GAI, it's worth it. I bought tickets for him & they cost me (after fees) about $60 for mid-level seats. I agree that tickets can be overpriced, but GAI is one the few people who I think deserves the profit as he uses some of it to create more music & to help run his farm, which he uses to help his local community in CO. Also, he used the profit from the McDonald's commercial that uses "Big Black Car" to donate to sustainable farming. I would rather be a few dollars short & see him live, maybe even meet him, than be filled with regret I didn't see him live before it's too late.
I just lost my love last Sunday and we used to listen to GAI. I miss him beyond measure. I’m sorry you had to experience it. This is my second round of losing the one I love. My husband passed 4 years ago. Had the fortune of experiencing love again, but I don’t think I can love again because of the pain
Fifty-five mile signs Thunder crack and lightning While something else inside Shines like the Fourth of July I'll go it on my own, I'll go it on my own, go it on my own Sand City bus kicking up dust Kicking up dust Before the sun comes up The devil sees us now Clear as the moon glows Sleeping in our winter clothes Radio's a crackling fire I'll go it on my own, I'll go it on my own, go it on my own Sand City bus kicking up dust Kicking up dust Before the sun comes up
The allure of "Before the Sun" by Gregory Alan Isakov is undeniable. Listening to it feels like being on a solitary road trip, surrounded by the majesty of nature and the quiet hum of one's thoughts. The imagery of "Fifty-five mile signs" and "Thunder crack and lightning" transports you to a desolate highway, juxtaposed against the warm glow of "something else inside" that "Shines like the fourth of July." There's a poignant sense of solitude in the refrain "I'll go it on my own," speaking to both the journey of self-discovery and the courage to face life's vastness alone. The "Sand city bus, kicking up dust" evokes the transient nature of life and moments that pass us by. Yet, amidst this vast and lonely landscape, there's hope in the ritualistic "Before the sun comes up," a nod to new beginnings and the promise of another day. The song feels like a whispered secret between the heart and the horizon, a gentle reminder that even in solitude, there's beauty, hope, and the eternal dance of light and shadows.
From Gregory himself: “Before the Sun” was going to be the first song. I think I wrote parts of “Before the Sun” when I was twenty-two, just as something for me. I’ve always played the banjo, but I’m not a trained banjo player or anything, and it’s something I felt a little bit shy about for a long time. But the song reminds me of working outside, and being outside, and I would play it on breaks from working. I felt like I needed to honor that song and find a home for it.
Hello Jessy 👋 how are you ? Simple music can make you sing, a simple hug can make you feel, better, simple things can make you happy, I hope my simple hello will put a smile on your face..
I was fortunate enough to hear - what I believe was the first time this was played live to an audience - in Santa Fe back in June of this year. Beautiful piece.
Hearing this for the first time while at the airport, on my way to see family. Gregory, as a fellow Coloradan I thank for sharing your music! It sounds like going home
The swelling of the music at 2:09 just really gets me. If I ever hear this live, I just know his band will just give an absolutely otherworldly performance
I got to hear it live just a few days ago. Gregory is absolutely amazing live! Best concert experience I’ve ever had. Wish I could go back in time and experience it over and over again.
It's the wood pigeon or grouse (not sure but it's amazing) taking flight at the top of the swell that sends a chill down my neck every single time.... even though I know it's coming.
this song feels like home. Gregory's banjo strums are like the rustling of the day's beginning, filled with anticipation and determination. The imagery of 'kicking up dust' 'before the sun comes up' is hard work and determination. It's also the promise something new as a result. The way he captures these simple yet profound emotions is something like magic. Once again, Gregory unearths the beauty in the ordinary and kicks up dust in our hearts. 👩🌾🚌🌄🪕🎶🌙🔥🌩
Heard this when you dropped it a few months ago...I haven't played my banjo since I gave birth to my first son 9 years ago. Picked it up again, so now, not only have you taken over my heart and ears...my fingers have the calluses I've missed so much.
I know the term ‘soul music’ is already taken, but his music is a unique version of that in it’s own way. So original and straight from/to the heart. Highlighting memories of happiness, as well as the tough moments. Soul enriching music, that guides you on the path through life in a soothing way.
It's such a rare treat to be able to find an artist and enjoying them enough to be able to listen to a new song of theirs for the first time as it's released. Gregory's entire archive of music remains as the only one which I will never skip a single song. His music truly helped save my life ❤️

This is another beautiful song! It's so rare to find an artist whose music, lyrics, and voice I love all the time, all songs! Thank you, Gregory Alan Isakov. Please never stop making and sharing beautiful music!
Hello Greg, I'm Kaustav from Guwahati, Assam Today I'm writing this message to thank you for your music and how much me and my brothers love it. When we wake up in the morning and sit with our morning tea with some good view, your songs would just enhance the overall experience. Your music just adds an all ecstatic vibe to the environment. We often talk about how wonderful it would be if you were sitting with us with a guitar and have sing those songs which we've been listening on our devices. How amazing it would be sitting beside you in person and have deep conversations about life and music some starlit night. an experience of a lifetime after which we won't have much expectations from our lives anymore. and then we would laugh at our stupid fantasy 😅 Jokes apart, we wish you good health and longevity so you can bless us with your music for years to come. And if you ever plan to visit Northeast India, know that 3 of your biggest fans are living here in hope of seeing you live someday. Take care..God Bless
The radio's a crackling fire line puts me back in the shoes I wore 20 years ago as a young man grinding me teeth unoticed. Sleeping in our winter coats sometimes just to tired or broke to find a bed and waking up to the heat of the sun glittering through leaves here in Pennsylvania where I now call home. Fast-forward 20 years later and I'm spending the money I earned to see Gregory with my wife at Asbury Hall in Buffalo NY and next week at a brewery in Charlston SC. Hard work always pays off if you believe in yourself. We arent for everyone, but you are perfect for someone. Finding them is the hard part, unless you reach out to everyone

Feels like going to church such a rich gospel Luike feel but about life as we live through the conditions and trails. He brings a old spirit to his music that when he sings you just feel something special about the time!
Listening to his music feels like putting on a weighted blanket and sinking into a comfy bed. This immediately ranks as one of my top 10 favorite Greg songs
Every song is amazing. Heartfelt .I'm grateful for this artist .❤
Spot on description! 😊
hell yea
We must be kindred spirits!
A weighted blanket sounds miserable though.

Sorry for the Lost. In songs such like this, you can still find them.
The man just fucking delivers. Every. Freaking. Song.
Fifty-five mile signs
Thunder crack and lightning
While something else inside
Shines like the Fourth of July
I'll go it on my own, I'll go it on my own, go it on my own
Sand City bus kicking up dust
Kicking up dust
Before the sun comes up
The devil sees us now
Clear as the moon glows
Sleeping in our winter clothes
Radio's a crackling fire
I'll go it on my own, I'll go it on my own, go it on my own
Sand City bus kicking up dust
Kicking up dust
Before the sun comes up
Not the song I was looking for. However I’m really glad I found it.
I heard 2 seconds of this and that banjo and knew this was going to be good

This! Perfection. I have a tear rolling down my face. Thank you for this.
Beautiful interpretation ❤
Your music was my soundtrack while hiking through the Appalachians. The New Folk sound is my heart and your music hits every string.
There is nothing in this world that gives me more hope than Gregory Alan Isakov because his music washes away from my soul the dust of everyday life
Feels 🥺
On days where I don’t see any beauty in the world, I listen to GAI to find it. Stunning song.

This is clearly folk music, not country.
I read that he wrote this song a long time ago and he would just sort of hear it in his mind while working on the farm. So glad it resurfaced!!
This sounds like it could be on “This Empty Northern Hemisphere” and I love that
