    Good to see more embedded linux material.These boards are great for all kinds of things.

    I really like how clearly you explain things in your videos. I don't have any ambiguity as to what you are doing. I also appreciate how clear your speech is.
    Aside from all that, this project board is really exciting! Interfacing through a linux interface opens up a world of possibilities for makers!

    I'm going to take a guess that you didn't watch the whole video. As I say at the end, using a BeagleBone to make an LED blink "is definitely overkill." You need to start somewhere when you want to learn how to work with GPIO on the BeagleBone and blinking LED is a good starting point. Where you take it from there is up to you!

    @MisterAlexUk Thanks for the feedback. We're always struggling with the right balance between a detailed tutorial and an overview. Check the link the description for the full write up.

    awsome guy, i liked your presentation. Thx a lot for the incredible potential of the beaglebone...i'm just overwhelmed

  • @MattRichardson

    @Proinventor91 Yeah, it's not as cheap as an Arduino, but to think of how powerful it is for the price, it's amazing, really.

  • @MattRichardson

    I like all kinds of different platforms! Whatever gets the job done! (though that was a black MacBook I plugged the BeagleBone into!)

    wow, an actual video applicable to make magazine. getting tired of arts and crafts time, plenty of time for that when I'm in the old folks home.

    Did you know that when you are writing Linux commands and paths in the terminal, you can press 'Tab" key to get the full command name or path? ;) It makes "moving" around the terminal much easier and faster.

  • @MattRichardson
    @MattRichardson 12 років тому

    @ranthoron I replied to another person who brought this up. I need the video to move at a certain pace, not too slow and not too fast. Shell history and tab completion makes things move by too quickly and make people feel lost when they're just learning this stuff. But I can totally understand how seasoned command line users might find it frustrating to watch my type it all out. I just don't want novices to feel discouraged.

    @executive When you're learning a new platform, you've got to start somewhere!

    @kasta867 If you want a full featured web server, it's there. Time without a RTC chip. Saving data without an SD shield. Easy remote access to the data (through many means). There are a bunch of reasons. As I said in the video, there's so much support for Linux, it makes complicated stuff much easier since so many people figured things out already.

    This is the first video that I have seen that makes me want to get a beaglebone. The documentation that is out by is hard to find, and not very good. I've heard a lot of people say that it is overly complicated for what it is, and want a more localized community (like the Arduino has). I'm going to wait to see one up close before I spend $90 one one for now.

  • @MattRichardson
    @MattRichardson 12 років тому

    @StoreFood Yes, I normally use that. But since this is a how-to, I didn't because I didn't want the text to move by too quickly.

  • @MattRichardson
    @MattRichardson 12 років тому

    @demytje The Arduino can only do so much at once. The BeagleBone is more powerful and can do more at once. Both are great, but for different reasons.

  • @MattRichardson
    @MattRichardson 12 років тому

    @ideeman1994 Yep, there's a DVI "Cape" (like a shield) that lets you hook it up to a screen and use a GUI. I suppose then you can VNC into it to access the GUI remotely.

  • @MattRichardson
    @MattRichardson 12 років тому

    Thanks! I look at the BeagleBone more like a barebones computer rather than as a sophisticated Arduino. They both have GPIO pins and are the same size, but are very different. The BeagleBone is certainly capable for complex projects, but it isn't simply an advanced Arduino.

    My open-source enthusiast, computer security professor also uses Mac. It surprised me too. I suspect that the reason is the locked boot-loader.. but I'm not sure.

  • @Membrane556

    I want one of these though I probably would not blink LEDs with it as that's like using a Bell Jet Ranger to get the groceries.
    Besides an Ardunio or PIC is easier for simple projects and a lot cheaper plus it won't eat batteries like a fast arm core will.
    I can see it being used as a media server,the brains for an internet enabled camera with pan and tilt,add enough smarts for robotic vision for a robotics project etc ie stuff you need that kind of power for.

    Look linux is free, user friendly (for the most part), pretty looking, free updates for life, and can run on pretty much any computer! So if you like the pretty look of your mac then linux has a desktop that copies the mac one and its as Versatel as a pc but its completely free!

    also we could argue just like the rest of the people about how it updates (which is just 5 minutes of your life) and how quick the start up time is. I will tell you those are pointless the versatility of the computer is whats important. for me at least I like a computer where I can modify everything from software to hardware. I even create video games from my computer (can MAC do that?) also there is not a lot of software geared towards mac (mac cant even run .EXE)

    Sure it's expensive, but if you take an Ferrari engine and put it in a VW Polo it would be much cheaper. You pay for design, like the Ferrari. Programs like Photoshop for windows are remakes from Mac. And yes, a for a lot of people it's harder t use. But that's just because they are used to Windows.

  • @1Sentient

    are you implying that mac does not update? I would hope it updates. you will be stuck with bugs and glitches if it doesn't also your exaggeration is very false I have not updated for windows in 20 days or so anyways it takes like 5 minutes to update.

    A friend of mine had one. I will tell you one thing they will never be better than windows as a whole. I am not going to lie Macs have some good software but the rest is not very good. first macs cost a lot of money. (this is proven) another thing that stands out with mac is that the hardware is not easily upgradable, so when your Mac gets outdated in 3-5 years you have to buy another one. for the comman man thats not very economical.with window computers you can upgrade everything
