I’m 84 now but when I was 17 my father and I went from Sandusky, Ohio to Sarnia , Ontario in a 13 foot Lyman outboard, with a short stop at PIB for gas, as well as stops at numerous other points of interest…the trip of a lifetime, one I will never forget.
Thanks Pete for sharing that! I also have so many great memories of being on the water with my father. Actually, you are kind of making me tear up here so I'm going to check out. Godspeed sir.
I'm 79 and I did the same route from North Cape Yacht Club (Toledo Beach) to PIB in my 21' Vineyard Haven sloop around 1963. Huge storm around West Sister. Hung out on the lee side for a while and then when it seemed to ease, took off. Huge waves and swells. Tried to get back behind the island, but couldn't. Made it to PIB flying on storm jib alone. Not much money in our pockets so the Coast Guard let us use their bunks and facilities. Had a great time. Return trip took forever. Dead calm for about 6 hours with unrelenting black flies bites in the middle of the lake. Memories. Miss unpredictable Lake Erie.
I enjoy your videos also. Keep up the good work. I want to go sailing sooooo bad now. Looking fwd to second half of Spring to begin this year to go sailing.
Brian, all my videos are long and boring, lol. First, I film them for me yet when I started I had also decided to post them. I don't even trying to make them go viral. My goal for anyone bored enough out of their mind to watch them was to simply take others along on my journeys. It is real time and just what I am going through and what I am thinking. I do hope others find value in them for they are reality. This one was actually one of my better ones. The others get worse. I warned you.
I really enjoyed your video. I have watched a lot of video’s on Lake Erie, but this was the best one yet. I spent a lot of summers at Put- In -Bay back in the 80’s. I was one of those party animals that used to raft off others and party My Ass off. Today I live in Hawaii and have been here for 32 years.
Beautiful video, loved it but the music kind of distracted and robbed some of the enjoyment, a little at the top and the end would have been nice, but as someone who makes their living on music i can say most will come here to see your wonderful SAILING video, if they really want music let then chase that down looking at MUSIC videos. otherwis nice.
Would it be 500-600 miles to go 'round Lake Erie? Do you need special permits for Canada? I suppose it would be a month of a sojourn. Have you gone north direct across the lake to London? Don
I charted 610 statue miles for the trip, who knows how many were actually sailed with all the tacking, etc. You only need a passport to enter Canada. I would recommend obtaining an I-68 to make reentry into the USA easier. With only a passport a U.S. citizen must go to specific reporting stations but with an I-68 on simply has to call customs upon return. Straight across for me from Cleveland is Erieau which I have been to many times. It's a wonderful quiet place. I have been to Port Stanley which is near London. It looks like a great place to visit and if I'm ever at Stanley again I'll be sure to get there since it sounds like you are recommending it.

Long video but very worthwhile. Watching it renews my desire to finish building my 28' catamaran and get out there. Life's short!

When your sailing alone....you ever think about running over St. Ed’s defensive line and secondary?
LOL!!! Only in heavy weather.
